Claire turned her phone back on after Antony left, and, of course, she wasn't surprised to see numerous missed calls and messages from her mother's number.
Antony had reminded her that until their engagement day arrived, they had to act as if Claire was still on good terms with the man her mother had chosen, even though Claire didn't actually have any contact with him. Both Gladwin and Antony even requested that Claire act enthusiastically about her engagement with Joshua Grint. Crafty as ever, Antony had even asked Claire to change his name to Joshua, so it wouldn't seem suspicious.
After replying to her mother's messages, Claire immediately turned her phone back off. She'd promised her mother she would come over tomorrow afternoon to help prepare the dress they'd be wearing for the engagement next Saturday.
And now, here she was. Taking a deep breath and steeling herself to lie to her mother—the woman who had given birth to her and raised her.
"Well, you finally showed up. Where have you been all this time?" her mother asked skeptically, just as Claire greeted her and walked into the house.
"On vacation," Claire replied flatly. "So, what are we doing now?" she asked, imagining Antony and their plan, which suddenly made her feel a bit excited.
"Answer my question first," her mother said, staring sharply at Claire. "You've resigned from that widower's company, right?" she asked, her eyes narrowing.
Claire rolled her eyes. "If I hadn't quit, I wouldn't be here today, Mom," she answered irritably.
Yes, it was her mother who had asked—or more accurately, forced—Claire to leave Antony's company on the very same night her engagement was arranged. Her mother's reason was so that Claire could keep her distance from Antony, wanting her to stay away, forget about him, and focus on her engagement and upcoming marriage.
At first, Claire didn't want to and refused the idea of resigning. She felt that her work and personal life weren't things her mother should control anymore. Besides, she'd been hopeful that Antony would cancel the engagement one way or another. But when she saw Antony's indifferent attitude toward her, she impulsively made the decision out of frustration, not because she wanted to be an obedient daughter.
"For all I know, you might have just taken a leave of absence so that I'd think you were following my wishes," her mother sneered again.
"Did you know that by resigning, I had to pay a pretty hefty penalty?" Claire said irritably.
"You just need to pay it. Didn't you tell me you had plenty of money? Besides, if that widower really liked you, he would have looked the other way and not made you pay such a trivial penalty, since he owns the company," Julie continued, making Claire roll her eyes.
Oh, God, when would her mother ever change? She claimed she didn't like Antony, yet in desperate situations, she still hoped for help from the very person she disliked.
"Are we going to get the dress now?" Claire asked impatiently.
Her mother nodded. "Of course," she said, standing up. She then walked into her room and returned with a purse in her hand.
"Choose something beautiful," her mother instructed as they arrived at Julie's favorite boutique. Claire only nodded in response.
Antony had already mentioned that Claire would be in charge of choosing the engagement theme, including her outfit. Once Claire decided on the color and pattern for her dress and those her family would wear, Antony would follow suit and order clothing in the same theme so that, on the engagement day, Claire and Antony would look coordinated in matching attire.
Antony's family had already ordered their matching outfits last weekend, but Antony wasn't concerned; the outfits they had ordered could still be worn at the upcoming wedding or the engagement of Antony's two other male cousins.
It took Claire quite a while to decide on the fabric and dress style she wanted. Although time was limited, Antony assured her that no matter how complex her desired dress might be, he would make it happen. Since this would be a historic moment for both of them, Claire chose her dress with extra care. She wanted to look stunning on her engagement day, even though she knew that might bring its own challenges later.
Claire glanced at her mother, silently offering an apology from the depths of her heart. She knew she was crossing a line by involving her mother in a plan that might make her furious, humiliated, or even cause her to lose face with her sister-in-law's family.
But Claire had no other choice. She had tried to persuade her mother in more gentle ways before. After all, this was about her future, and she wanted to choose her own partner, as it would be she who would live with him, not her mother. Claire held firmly to her principle of marrying only once in her life, regardless of whether it would succeed or fail. She would leave the rest up to fate. For now, she could only hope that the surprise she, Antony, and her siblings had planned wouldn't give her mother a heart attack.
Three hours later, Claire finally left the boutique after she, her mother, and her sisters-in-law had finalized the dress design and taken measurements for what Claire would wear. The boutique owner promised that the dresses would be ready the day before the engagement ceremony. Given the hefty price tag, they'd better not break their promise.
After finishing at the boutique, they continued their day by meeting with the catering service. Once again, Claire looked enthusiastic about the various dishes they would serve at her engagement. This time, she wanted to show her future in-laws that she had excellent taste. Her mother seemed unsuspecting and even kept smiling approvingly every time Claire requested a menu change. To her mother, Claire seemed genuinely invested in this engagement—and she was, though not with the man her mother had in mind.
After a tiring day of arranging all the details for the engagement, including decorations and more, they finally headed home. Claire asked her mother's driver to drop her off at her restaurant, as she hadn't yet told Yudhis that she was no longer employed at Coskun, which meant she could now focus fully on their restaurant.
Yudhis was thrilled with Claire's decision, and he immediately started sharing his brilliant plans for opening another branch of their restaurant, which had already attracted a loyal clientele. Claire listened enthusiastically until her phone rang, and her former fiancé's name appeared on the screen. A wide smile broke across her face, which made Yudhis raise an eyebrow in confusion. "Yes, I'll be waiting," Claire said as she ended the call.
"You've really changed," Yudhis commented, his eyes smiling. "Are you in love?" he asked, curious.
Claire smirked and gave him a challenging look. "If I told you that I'm getting engaged this weekend, would you believe me?" she countered.
Yudhis's eyes widened, his mouth dropping open in shock. "You're not joking, are you?" he asked in disbelief.
Claire chuckled and nodded. "What do you think?"
"Claire, I'm serious," Yudhis pressed.
Claire nodded. "So am I," she replied flatly. "Make sure you don't miss it," she said, still smiling. "I have to go now—my future husband is waiting for me." She grabbed her bag and left, leaving Yudhis staring after her in disbelief.
Inwardly, he wondered what kind of man had managed to win over the heart of the queen bee herself, also known as Mrs. Julie Hampton.
H-1 The EngagementThe noisy bustle at Claire's home made her heart pound erratically. While most brides-to-be would feel excited on the eve of their engagement, Claire felt more anxious and on guard. She was happy, of course. Who wouldn't be happy to finally be proposed to by someone they loved and who loved them back? But the fear of her mother's reaction—the rejection she might face tomorrow when her mother sees the person coming in place of her preferred son-in-law—filled Claire with dread. What would happen tomorrow? What if her mother rejected Antony and his family? Claire poured all her worries out to her twin brother. But, with his usual calmness, Gladwin reassured her that, like it or not, tomorrow their mother would accept Antony and his family, if only to save face in front of the guests. Yet, what if Gladwin and their other brothers were wrong? What if her mother's pride, preferring not to have a son-in-law who was a divorcé, was stronger than the embarrassment she'd face
Saturday MorningThe bustle in Richard's home had begun once again. The decoration team was busy preparing everything according to their plan. The chairs that had been stacked the night before were now arranged neatly and draped with beautiful fabric that matched the theme of the event. The food tables were set up, even though the catering service wouldn't arrive for a few more hours. Amidst all the chaos, Claire chose to stay quietly in Gladwin's room, while her twin had just arrived."I should be able to sleep until noon since I have another night shift tonight. Don't you feel sorry for me? My sun-god-like handsomeness could be ruined by dark circles from lack of sleep," Gladwin grumbled to Claire, who had been repeatedly texting him to hurry up, even though the engagement ceremony was still hours away."I'll cover the cost of your eye-bag removal surgery later," Claire replied flatly.Once again, Claire stood by the window, gazing out at the yard of their house."Just because you'r
"Don't speak carelessly, Abby," Julie scolded, frustration evident in her voice. The middle-aged woman began to panic at the thought that the family of her prospective son-in-law might not show up, potentially canceling the engagement at the last minute."Sorry, I misspoke," Abigail replied, shrugging her shoulders.Claire bit her lip to suppress a smile, while Gladwin deliberately flashed a mischievous grin. "But what Abigail said could happen. Maybe they've decided not to come and are canceling this engagement because the bride changed his mind at the last minute," he said nonchalantly."It's been an hour past our schedule, but Auntie's fiancé still hasn't shown up," Abigail complained, her makeup starting to run from the sweat. "I can barely keep it together," she muttered, making sure her voice was loud enough for her grandmother to hear. "Aunty, didn't you accidentally cause a problem that made that guy suddenly not want to marry you?" she whispered, her tone dripping with sarcas
Part 66Julie stared at Richard in disbelief before glancing at the door where her two sons and daughter were gathered. It was now clear that all her children had conspired against her, and this was all under the approval of her eldest son, Richard. What could Julie do now, especially when the highest authority in the Hampton family, her firstborn, was also involved? Her eyes swept over the guests who were stealing glances in their direction. Even without whispering, their curious looks spoke volumes. Julie felt as if she had already lost. Completely!A forced smile accompanied by a feigned enthusiasm—a mere act—was all she could muster. She extended her hand to the oldest Quirino couple and ushered them into the house, where the chairs originally prepared for her chosen son-in-law and future in-laws would now be occupied by Antony and his family. As Julie excused herself to return to Claire, she shot a sharp glance at her only daughter the moment the door closed."So this is your pla
The event concluded swiftly. After the ring exchange, the remaining activities were filled with small talk until all the guests departed for their respective homes. Only the immediate families of Claire and Antony remained, and soon, they, too, returned to their own residences. Now, Antony and Claire's two older brothers were engaged in a serious business discussion. Gladwin had already returned to his apartment to rest, as he had to work later that night. Meanwhile, Julie Hampton was sulking, hiding in her own room.Claire didn't want to be seen as a disobedient daughter, allowing her mother to remain angry indefinitely. She needed time to gather her thoughts and find the right words to ask for her mother's forgiveness, hoping Julie would eventually accept the reality that it was time to let Claire make her own choices. When Antony decided to leave, Claire chose to accompany him. She didn't want to stay home, anticipating the discomfort of facing her mother, especially with her broth
Time passed swiftly. Amid her restaurant duties, Claire was busy preparing for her wedding, which was set to take place very soon. Typically, wedding preparations would be handled by the woman's family, but Claire was different. She discussed her wedding plans more with Antony's mother and aunt since her own mother had continued to keep her distance and act coldly towards her.Since their engagement, Claire had not returned to Richard's residence. She preferred to stay in her own home and spend more time with Gladwin, Abigail, and Flavia, who had recently been spending the night at her place more often. Gladwin took on the role of bridging the wedding preparations.Like right now. Claire, Antony, Abigail, and Flavia had just finished dinner. Her twin brother arrived with a rolled-up notebook that he tucked into his pants pocket. He handed the notebook to Claire as he began to eat the leftover dishes on the table.Claire opened the book and read through the wishlist from her mother, as

Claire could only smile in response to that accusatory remark.A snippet of the song that Adaline was singing on stage made Claire and Antony hold hands tightly, hoping that no obstacles would disturb them in the future.Guests began to dwindle. But then Claire tried to clear her mind. She refused to believe that her mother could be so cruel to her; if that were the case, Claire might end up resenting her mother for the rest of her life.Disloyal? She didn't care about that word. Her face was already free of makeup, and her hair had been released from the beautiful tiara she had worn earlier. Now, the makeup artists helped Claire start to unbutton the lovely gown she had worn, which had so many buttons down the back.Once everything was removed, Claire opened her suitcase, searching for clothes. She decided to clean herself up in the bathroom that was in the dressing room.Feeling refreshed after showering and washing her hair, Claire put on the clothes she had chosen: a pair of jeans and a loose shirt instead of the dress Antony had picked out for her to wear on their honeymoon, which they were supposed to take right after the reception she was now reluctant to attend. No, she wouldn't just surrender herself to her husband a
The two teenagers turned their heads simultaneously towards the aisle as they saw an ominous aura spread around them. Moreover, people were now looking in the same direction. Where the woman Flavia and Abigail had not expected to see had just appeared."Why is that woman there?" Abigail whispered to her best friend.Flavia who had been engrossed in her digital camera and taking pictures was now holding it languidly. "I don't know." She replied innocently. She looked back at the photo produced by her hand, choosing to ignore Abigail and her suspicions."Shall we go closer to them?" Abigail asked in a challenged tone.Flavia raised her head again and looked at her best friend with a furrowed brow. As Abigail started to take a step, Flavia held her back by holding Abigail's arm tightly and shaking her head."No, Abby." She said.Instead, she pulled her best friend's hand to walk away from the reception room and left the hall by walking in the hotel's garden area to take some photos as a
"Full?" asked Claire with a furrowed brow.Antony deliberately re-emphasized his lower body so that Claire was wide-eyed. "You know what I mean, right?" Antony whispered in the girl's ear that inevitably made Claire shudder in horror. The man's lips teased her, starting to caress the side of her face so that she unconsciously looked up and gave him the opportunity to explore the slender recesses of her neck."Can I ask for my rights now?" he asked in a pleading tone.Claire shook her head."Why again now?" Antony asked in a whining tone."Your body stinks," Claire said as she wrinkled her nose. "Go take a shower." She ordered as she turned Antony around and pushed him into her room until he reached her bathroom.Antony wanted to resist, but seeing his wife's glare, he finally went in.What's wrong with his wife. Why is it so hard to conquer her? Instead of spending time kissing hot and wet, Claire pushed him into the shower. Antony had hoped they would move on to the next stage that h
"Those two women were the answer to my mother's prayers," she said, anger flaring in her voice.Antony was taken aback. "No, darling. Your mother's prayers will never be answered like that.""Alright, they did come with certain intentions. But can't you see me? To me, they are nobody. In my eyes, in my heart, in my mind, there is only Claire, Claire, and Claire. There's no other woman." Antony coaxed her in a soothing tone.Claire couldn't help but chuckle at that. "Don't sweet-talk me," she replied with a hint of amusement.Antony shook his head. He stepped closer to his wife. Claire still had her arms crossed over her chest, and to maintain some distance from him, she leaned her body back."I'm not sweet-talking you, darling. I'm speaking the truth. If only there were experts who could read my mind and heart, you could ask them. I'm sure they would tell you the truth. And if they lied, I would bribe them to say what I want them to say," Antony said again.Claire rolled her eyes. Ant

Antony stopped his car outside Claire's house and unlocked the gate with the spare key he had kept for a long time.Claire's car hadn't moved from its spot. It was still there since the last time Antony visited his fiancée's home, before Claire's family took her back.Who knows? Maybe Claire could hear the gate opening or maybe not. But one thing was clear: his wife did not welcome him at all because Claire's house felt eerily silent. Was Gladwin playing a trick on him? Who knows if Claire was really back at her house. He opened the front door and stepped inside, greeting her. Once again, there was no response. When Antony noticed Claire's bedroom door slightly ajar, he walked in.Claire wasn't there. All that was left was the small suitcase she had brought from the hotel room."Claire, sweetheart," Antony called out again, but still, there was no answer.Could it be that Claire left again after dropping off her suitcase and saw Gladwin leave? he wondered to himself.Antony continued
Quickly, Anastasia ran after Antony. She called his name repeatedly, but Antony chose to ignore her until her stiletto heels finally brought her close to him. She immediately reached out and grabbed Antony's arm, but he harshly brushed her off."Antony, listen to me. Please. I'm really sorry. I apologize," she said in a whiny tone. The woman tried to grab Antony's hand again, but he pushed her away once more, causing her to fall and kneel on the cold marble floor. Not wanting to give up, Anastasia wrapped her arms around Antony's legs, forcing him to stop."I'm truly sorry," she pleaded again, her voice desperate. She begged for the man's compassion, finally realizing that everything Antony had said in the room earlier was no joke. "I... I..." She couldn't find the words. "I'm sorry, please forgive me," she begged, tears starting to wet her face.Antony looked down at her with a sharp gaze. "Do you realize that what you're doing has crossed the line?" he asked in his cold tone.Anasta
Antony arrived at a luxurious five-star hotel located not too far from his family's hotel. As soon as he parked his car, he headed straight to the room Letizia had mentioned when he contacted his cousin earlier.Inside the lavish room rented by his ex-wife sat Antony's mother, Brianna Quirino, alongside her husband, Mr. Arthur. Meanwhile, Letizia stood with her hip leaning against the bar chair, her arms crossed over her chest.Don't ask where her children and husband were. Antony guessed that his sister-in-law was waiting for them somewhere. The three family members displayed different expressions, surely with different thoughts filled with questions that might mirror what was in Antony's own mind.On the other side of the room, right above the sofa facing away from the window, two women sat side by side. One was Anastasia, a woman he had pretended to date for work purposes. The other was his ex-wife, the woman he once loved deeply, who had given him a beautiful and devoted daughter.
