Part 66
Julie stared at Richard in disbelief before glancing at the door where her two sons and daughter were gathered. It was now clear that all her children had conspired against her, and this was all under the approval of her eldest son, Richard.
What could Julie do now, especially when the highest authority in the Hampton family, her firstborn, was also involved?
Her eyes swept over the guests who were stealing glances in their direction. Even without whispering, their curious looks spoke volumes. Julie felt as if she had already lost. Completely!
A forced smile accompanied by a feigned enthusiasm—a mere act—was all she could muster. She extended her hand to the oldest Quirino couple and ushered them into the house, where the chairs originally prepared for her chosen son-in-law and future in-laws would now be occupied by Antony and his family.
As Julie excused herself to return to Claire, she shot a sharp glance at her only daughter the moment the door closed.
"So this is your plan?" she accused, glaring fiercely, the veins in her neck standing out from her anger. "You seem so compliant in front of me, yet behind my back, you and that widower conspired all of this?!" she hissed, her voice full of fury.
Claire knew her mother wanted to scream, but considering there were many ears outside that could hear, the woman opted to replace her shout with a sharp hiss that did nothing to lessen her rage.
Julie's furious gaze was fixed directly on her only daughter, who sat perched on her bed with her head held high, silently meeting her mother's glare with an expressionless stare.
"You really want to embarrass me, don't you?" she accused again.
Taking a deep breath, Claire replied, "I told you before, back at the hospital, that I have my own choices. You've always been selfish, so don't blame me for being selfish too." She said this as calmly as possible, trying not to let her own anger flare up.
Julie scoffed, looking at Claire with disgust. "You want to decide your own future? Feeling all high and mighty because you have that family and your brothers supporting you? Fine!" Her voice dripped with scorn. "But mark my words: in the future, nothing will be easy for you. One day, your past will make you suffer. You will live in constant fear because of your husband's ex-wife. You'll worry that she might come back and demand her position as the mother of the child she abandoned all this time." Her words struck Claire like a punch to the gut.
Couldn't this woman, who had given birth to her and raised her, offer a blessing instead of a curse? Shouldn't every mother want her child to be happy? Why was her mother behaving so selfishly, even in this dire moment?
"No matter what you say, no matter how my future turns out, I will face it on my own terms," Claire replied firmly.
Julie huffed again. "Don't come crying to me later, saying that what I said is true and has come to pass." With that, she stormed out of the room, casting an angry glance at Harry and Gladwin before leaving.
"It'll be okay," Harry reassured them.
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean for Mom to take it out on you," Claire said, her eyes welling up with tears. Mary sat beside Claire, gently rubbing her sister-in-law's shoulder.
"I knew this would happen, but it's okay. In time, Mom will forgive us for what we did," she comforted. Claire could only hope her sister-in-law's words would come true.
After some time spent calming herself, the door opened once more, and Bella stepped in with a worried expression on her face. "Claire, are you alright?" she asked softly.
"Sorry I'm late," Bella said as she walked over to Claire. "There was an accident on the way here, and it took a long time to clear the road. I also had to give a statement to the police." She paused, her expression shifting to one of curiosity. "But that's not the issue. Claire, why do I see Mr. Quirino's family here? Are you finally going to be engaged to him instead of the man your mom arranged for you?"
Claire looked at her friend, and for a moment, her anger and sadness from her mother's words faded away. She nodded, a smile spreading across her face. Bella responded with an excited squeal and immediately enveloped Claire in a tight hug, grateful for the turn of events.
"But my mom still hasn't given her blessing. She's really upset with me about this," Claire said softly.
Bella gently rubbed Claire's back in support. "Eventually, a stone will wear down from constant drops of water. And your mom's heart is way softer than a stone; it will melt eventually," she reassured Claire. "Isn't it in movies that parents' approval often comes after you have children? So you and Mr. Quirino need to act fast on having a baby. Maybe have plenty of kids so your mom runs out of time to stay angry while dealing with spit-ups and changing diapers for her grandkids," she joked, making Claire chuckle despite herself. "By the way, I haven't given you a compliment yet." Bella looked at Claire with admiration. "You look amazing today!" she said playfully, nudging Claire with her elbow.
Taking a deep breath, Claire focused on neutralizing her feelings, setting aside the sadness from her mother's earlier words to embrace the happiness of Antony and his family being there to propose to her. What lay ahead was a secret only Fate could unveil.
Claire gazed at Antony with a smile in her eyes, her heart racing as he slipped the diamond ring onto her finger. The sound of applause filled the room, but all of Claire's attention was solely on Antony.
"Perhaps the couple would like to say a few words?" the emcee asked, looking at Claire and Antony expectantly.
Antony nodded, and an event organizer handed him a microphone.
"To ensure our esteemed guests aren't left in the dark, I'd like to announce that we've decided to hold the wedding next month. Details will be sent out in the invitations. Thank you all for your support," Antony concluded, returning the mic to the event staff.
For Julie Hampton, it was like being stabbed and then slashed with a sword. She stood frozen, her face pale. Her plan to disrupt the engagement was swiftly dismissed by Antony's unexpected announcement of their wedding, a decision she couldn't counter without risking embarrassment in front of everyone present.
From this moment forward, Julie had to brace herself for the deluge of questions about the Quirino family and the swift wedding plans that loomed ahead. She could already sense the whispers, the gossip, and the scrutiny of their social circle; her mind raced with the implications of Antony's declaration.
"How could this happen?" she thought bitterly. As she surveyed the room, she noticed a mixture of shock and delight among the guests, and it infuriated her even more. Julie felt cornered, knowing that she had lost the upper hand.
In the midst of her turmoil, she could see Claire beaming with joy, her expression radiating happiness that Julie had tried so hard to suppress. This was not the outcome she had envisioned. Instead of thwarting the engagement, her efforts had inadvertently strengthened it.
Determined not to show her disappointment, Julie forced a smile and tried to engage with the guests, but her mind was racing. What would she tell her friends? How would she maintain her reputation?
As guests began to mingle, offering congratulations, she felt the weight of the world on her shoulders. Her thoughts were clouded with resentment and determination. She had to find a way to regain control, to maneuver through this unexpected twist with grace, and perhaps, to rethink her strategy regarding Claire and Antony's union.
The event concluded swiftly. After the ring exchange, the remaining activities were filled with small talk until all the guests departed for their respective homes. Only the immediate families of Claire and Antony remained, and soon, they, too, returned to their own residences. Now, Antony and Claire's two older brothers were engaged in a serious business discussion. Gladwin had already returned to his apartment to rest, as he had to work later that night. Meanwhile, Julie Hampton was sulking, hiding in her own room.Claire didn't want to be seen as a disobedient daughter, allowing her mother to remain angry indefinitely. She needed time to gather her thoughts and find the right words to ask for her mother's forgiveness, hoping Julie would eventually accept the reality that it was time to let Claire make her own choices. When Antony decided to leave, Claire chose to accompany him. She didn't want to stay home, anticipating the discomfort of facing her mother, especially with her broth
Time passed swiftly. Amid her restaurant duties, Claire was busy preparing for her wedding, which was set to take place very soon. Typically, wedding preparations would be handled by the woman's family, but Claire was different. She discussed her wedding plans more with Antony's mother and aunt since her own mother had continued to keep her distance and act coldly towards her.Since their engagement, Claire had not returned to Richard's residence. She preferred to stay in her own home and spend more time with Gladwin, Abigail, and Flavia, who had recently been spending the night at her place more often. Gladwin took on the role of bridging the wedding preparations.Like right now. Claire, Antony, Abigail, and Flavia had just finished dinner. Her twin brother arrived with a rolled-up notebook that he tucked into his pants pocket. He handed the notebook to Claire as he began to eat the leftover dishes on the table.Claire opened the book and read through the wishlist from her mother, as
The events proceeded according to the instructions from the host.Happy? Of course, Claire was happy. Especially seeing Bella's silly antics, who didn't hesitate to liven up the event alongside Gladwin and some of his office friends invited to the wedding, which surprised them as well. After all, Claire's absence from the office had already been quite shocking, and now they were suddenly presented with news of a wedding they had never seen any signs of."I had my suspicions when our big boss showed up at my wedding, and it turns out he was after the cheese in the sandwich," Chand whispered when his friend arrived with his wife. Claire could only smile in response to that accusatory remark.A snippet of the song that Adaline was singing on stage made Claire and Antony hold hands tightly, hoping that no obstacles would disturb them in the future.Guests began to dwindle. Amidst welcoming guests, they also took several photo sessions—not just with colleagues but also to capture moments w
But then Claire tried to clear her mind. She refused to believe that her mother could be so cruel to her; if that were the case, Claire might end up resenting her mother for the rest of her life.Disloyal? She didn't care about that word. Her face was already free of makeup, and her hair had been released from the beautiful tiara she had worn earlier. Now, the makeup artists helped Claire start to unbutton the lovely gown she had worn, which had so many buttons down the back.Once everything was removed, Claire opened her suitcase, searching for clothes. She decided to clean herself up in the bathroom that was in the dressing room.Feeling refreshed after showering and washing her hair, Claire put on the clothes she had chosen: a pair of jeans and a loose shirt instead of the dress Antony had picked out for her to wear on their honeymoon, which they were supposed to take right after the reception she was now reluctant to attend. No, she wouldn't just surrender herself to her husband a
Antony arrived at a luxurious five-star hotel located not too far from his family's hotel. As soon as he parked his car, he headed straight to the room Letizia had mentioned when he contacted his cousin earlier.Inside the lavish room rented by his ex-wife sat Antony's mother, Brianna Quirino, alongside her husband, Mr. Arthur. Meanwhile, Letizia stood with her hip leaning against the bar chair, her arms crossed over her chest.Don't ask where her children and husband were. Antony guessed that his sister-in-law was waiting for them somewhere. The three family members displayed different expressions, surely with different thoughts filled with questions that might mirror what was in Antony's own mind.On the other side of the room, right above the sofa facing away from the window, two women sat side by side. One was Anastasia, a woman he had pretended to date for work purposes. The other was his ex-wife, the woman he once loved deeply, who had given him a beautiful and devoted daughter.
Quickly, Anastasia ran after Antony. She called his name repeatedly, but Antony chose to ignore her until her stiletto heels finally brought her close to him. She immediately reached out and grabbed Antony's arm, but he harshly brushed her off."Antony, listen to me. Please. I'm really sorry. I apologize," she said in a whiny tone. The woman tried to grab Antony's hand again, but he pushed her away once more, causing her to fall and kneel on the cold marble floor. Not wanting to give up, Anastasia wrapped her arms around Antony's legs, forcing him to stop."I'm truly sorry," she pleaded again, her voice desperate. She begged for the man's compassion, finally realizing that everything Antony had said in the room earlier was no joke. "I... I..." She couldn't find the words. "I'm sorry, please forgive me," she begged, tears starting to wet her face.Antony looked down at her with a sharp gaze. "Do you realize that what you're doing has crossed the line?" he asked in his cold tone.Anasta
Antony stopped his car outside Claire's house and unlocked the gate with the spare key he had kept for a long time.Claire's car hadn't moved from its spot. It was still there since the last time Antony visited his fiancée's home, before Claire's family took her back.Who knows? Maybe Claire could hear the gate opening or maybe not. But one thing was clear: his wife did not welcome him at all because Claire's house felt eerily silent. Was Gladwin playing a trick on him? Who knows if Claire was really back at her house. He opened the front door and stepped inside, greeting her. Once again, there was no response. When Antony noticed Claire's bedroom door slightly ajar, he walked in.Claire wasn't there. All that was left was the small suitcase she had brought from the hotel room."Claire, sweetheart," Antony called out again, but still, there was no answer.Could it be that Claire left again after dropping off her suitcase and saw Gladwin leave? he wondered to himself.Antony continued
"Those two women were the answer to my mother's prayers," she said, anger flaring in her voice.Antony was taken aback. "No, darling. Your mother's prayers will never be answered like that.""Alright, they did come with certain intentions. But can't you see me? To me, they are nobody. In my eyes, in my heart, in my mind, there is only Claire, Claire, and Claire. There's no other woman." Antony coaxed her in a soothing tone.Claire couldn't help but chuckle at that. "Don't sweet-talk me," she replied with a hint of amusement.Antony shook his head. He stepped closer to his wife. Claire still had her arms crossed over her chest, and to maintain some distance from him, she leaned her body back."I'm not sweet-talking you, darling. I'm speaking the truth. If only there were experts who could read my mind and heart, you could ask them. I'm sure they would tell you the truth. And if they lied, I would bribe them to say what I want them to say," Antony said again.Claire rolled her eyes. Ant
The two teenagers turned their heads simultaneously towards the aisle as they saw an ominous aura spread around them. Moreover, people were now looking in the same direction. Where the woman Flavia and Abigail had not expected to see had just appeared."Why is that woman there?" Abigail whispered to her best friend.Flavia who had been engrossed in her digital camera and taking pictures was now holding it languidly. "I don't know." She replied innocently. She looked back at the photo produced by her hand, choosing to ignore Abigail and her suspicions."Shall we go closer to them?" Abigail asked in a challenged tone.Flavia raised her head again and looked at her best friend with a furrowed brow. As Abigail started to take a step, Flavia held her back by holding Abigail's arm tightly and shaking her head."No, Abby." She said.Instead, she pulled her best friend's hand to walk away from the reception room and left the hall by walking in the hotel's garden area to take some photos as a
"Full?" asked Claire with a furrowed brow.Antony deliberately re-emphasized his lower body so that Claire was wide-eyed. "You know what I mean, right?" Antony whispered in the girl's ear that inevitably made Claire shudder in horror. The man's lips teased her, starting to caress the side of her face so that she unconsciously looked up and gave him the opportunity to explore the slender recesses of her neck."Can I ask for my rights now?" he asked in a pleading tone.Claire shook her head."Why again now?" Antony asked in a whining tone."Your body stinks," Claire said as she wrinkled her nose. "Go take a shower." She ordered as she turned Antony around and pushed him into her room until he reached her bathroom.Antony wanted to resist, but seeing his wife's glare, he finally went in.What's wrong with his wife. Why is it so hard to conquer her? Instead of spending time kissing hot and wet, Claire pushed him into the shower. Antony had hoped they would move on to the next stage that h
