I hung up the phone and broke down emotionally, feeling a mixture of sadness and anger, but primarily revengeful! I couldn't stop the fall of my tears as they leaked from under my closed lids. When I opened my eyes, they landed on the ripped-up check at my feet. "The nerve of him to offer me money!"
This swirl of mixed emotions came in and out of my heart and mind. I’m so furious at him! And how he cowardly abandoned me on our anniversary day for an ex-girlfriend, Susan Hubbard!
“How could he treat me this way! After I put up with him and all he’s done and failed to do in this marriage!”
My ride was on the way, so I hurried and went into the bathroom. I looked into the mirror, seeing the mascara running from my eyes down my cheek. I hop into the shower to clean up, and I want to look my best. Afterward, I patted myself dry, moisturized my skin, and found a sexy dress. I brushed my hair and secured it with several pins at the crown of my head. I peered into the mirror and noticed the swelling around my eyes had gone down. Anyone would notice the slight puffiness under my eyes; I packed on more concealer under my eyes to camouflage my earlier sobbing.
That’s when I heard the doorbell rang.
I went down the staircase and opened the front door while the red BMW coupe was being parked in my driveway. Instead of honking the horn, a signal was given as the headlights flashed twice. I approached the car and was greeted gently with a kiss on my scented cheek. Arms that wrapped around my body to comfort me.
“You can come inside; I’m almost ready.”
"Are you sure?"
"Yes, very sure. My husband isn't coming back here. So don't worry."
"Deja, did you see this?“ A little gift-wrapped box was picked up on the front lawn.
"What is it?”
I opened the gift box. Inside, it contained a pair of beautiful sapphire earrings. It was wrapped in the same material as the jewelry box for the ruby necklace box he held in his hand on television.
“Wow! Are these beautiful earrings for you? They are the perfect color for your eyes. How did they get outside on the front lawn? Did you know they were out here on the lawn? I’m assuming they must be your anniversary gift?”
I became even more disgusted when I saw them; I couldn’t speak about it because I knew they must have been a gift he was planning to give Susan Hubbard. Holland must have dropped them in his haste to leave me to be by her side.
"DISGUSTING!" I took the box and tossed it in the trash. “Let’s go; I'm ready to leave.”
“Wait, Deja! You just threw away a very pair of expensive, beautiful earrings. What is going on with you!”
“I don’t want them in this house! They are trash, in my opinion!"
“No, I’m sure they were meant for you. I’ll just take them out of the trash."
''Don't you dare! Who side are you on?!"
"I was just going to sit them here on the counter.”
“Let’s go!” I opened the solid mahogany door, and we left as we got in the car and drove away.
“Where do you want to go? So I can put the address into my GPS.”
“Straight to the hotel here in the city."
"Are you serious? I knew you wanted a good time, but I wasn't thinking that way. Okay, you got to tell me what’s going on. I was surprised you called me. We haven’t done something like this since you got married. After three years of marriage, I thought you would be in the thralls of celebrating your anniversary with Holland.”
“You’re right; I haven’t done anything in a very long time. But that’s about to change tonight!”
“This is your anniversary tonight? What about your husband?”
“What about him?”
Is it really over between you two?”
I hunched my shoulders.
“Something must have happened between the two of you. Did Holland do something?”
“I don’t have a husband. I have a man I’m married to. If he were concerned about me hanging out, he would be here if he did. Do you see him anywhere around?”
“Well, no....”
“Exactly! This is all about me and you tonight!”
“I’m livin’ it up tonight with you!”
“Okay, well, let me take you somewhere nice. So you can let off some of this steam.”

They arrived at Eminence Hotel, which was for members only. It has a nightclub, with exclusive shopping and excellent food. They serve you bubbly and play music in the background while the wealthy come and spend countless dollars.
"Let's go shopping first!"
"Whatever you wish."
I tried on the latest shoes, clothes, and accessories. Being a platinum customer for years, I own all the classics already, but as the old saying goes, a diamond is a girl's best friend. I finally started having fun trying on whatever I wanted; I held back from doing what I loved for three years. So tonight, I drank expensive champagne and danced.
Olivia my best friend says to me. “Oh wow! Girl, you look so pretty in that dress. See, Amanza, this is the real you—style, sophistication, and glamor. I never understood why you had to hide who you are from Holland. You are charming and smart just the way you are. You’ve changed so much trying to be a plain Jane and make him happy.”
The minute she mentioned Holland’s name, I rolled my eyes. “Please don’t mess up my mood by saying his name. I can’t believe it. After all this time, three long years, he still doesn't love me. All he has done is criticize me, Livia. It was only two hours ago that he was accusing me of cheating on him. Can you believe that?” I looked at my friend as a tear slipped from my eyelid.
Olivia couldn't believe her friend's confession, which sounded unbelievable. Olivia’s eyebrows arched in surprise and concern. She moved from her seat and sat down next to Amanza. Taking her hand, she shook her head in amazement.
“Ah, sweetheart, don't cry. How could that be? What’s wrong with him? Can't Holland see that all you can see is him?” Olivia says. “I find this so absurd. Men can be so absurd and foolish! Considering how much you love him and have been devoted to your marriage, how can he fix his mouth to say such things to you?.”
“What's worse is that Holland's ex-girlfriend is back.”
“What do you mean back? Back in the city, or are you saying they are back together? Wait! Did you see them together?”
It's not just rumors. I wish it were, but I was out at night and saw Holland with my eyes. He was wining and dining and grinning up in Susan Hubbard's face at Rochester’s restaurant."
"What! Amanza, no, you must be mistaken. Today is your anniversary."
“She is his first love; you can tell he can’t shake her and has lingering feelings for her. The man forgot all about it; it was our anniversary today. Ever since Susie returned, he's been spending much time with her. “
Olivia looks angrier than I do. “Ooh! Amanza, you know, as your friend, I wouldn't ever lie to you about how I feel. He’s the lowest of the low, in my opinion!”
All I could do was sit there and cry. “Livia, it hurt so bad! I never knew pain like this before. He’s my first true love.”
“I'm so sorry it's happening to you. Don’t tell me anymore. Let’s not talk about it anymore. You know, I’ve never liked or trusted Holland all that much. Why have you stayed with this man as long as you have? I don’t know. Now that he’s left you all alone on your anniversary, aren’t you ready to leave him? You don’t need him for his money or material things…and you don’t have any kids for this man. What’s holding you with him?”
“Wait, Livia. I got a text here. Let me read it. It might be from Holland.”
Just then, I received a text message.
It was from none other than Susan.
I begin to read the text. My heart slammed against my ribs.
"Amanza! Is everything okay?" Olivia asked looking at my facial expression.
My hands trembled as I tried to hold onto my phone while reading the text.
“I’m pregnant with Holland’s Child. We need to talk, Susie.”

When I looked at the time, it was around 11:45 p.m. The day of my anniversary has been nothing but one disappointing surprise after another. But tonight, it’s ending with a bang! The biggest surprising thing was yet to come. On my anniversary, I received a picture of a pregnancy test and a message that my husband's mistress was going to have his baby.Olivia took the phone and read the text. “That whore! Don’t give her the satisfaction of responding. Don’t let her see you sweat. Deal with it on your own time! Wait until tomorrow, make her wait, and leave her wondering. She was right. So I sat on the bed and removed my heels from my tired feet. 'What was I thinking? If he wants Susie, then he can have her! ' I burst into tears because I didn’t mean it. The mere thought of thinking about him with her broke me. I rocked back and forth, crying nonstop.“Oh, Olivia, I don’t want to lose him. What should I do?”“You are not going to let them get away with this! That’s what you are going to
Holland's POVOn the day of my anniversary, I left work excited. I had made it to that auction just in time to bid on the perfect pair of earrings. I saw them a few days ago, and they reminded me of my wife’s beautiful eyes. I just had to have them. But nothing went the way I had planned it that day. Once I won the bid to purchase this expensive jewelry, I knew reporters were at the event and would swarm around me to interview me. So, to disguise my wife's natural gift. I ended up bidding on the ruby necklace at the auction and won that bid, too. So, I knew that the bid would attract reporters to me. And Amanza would probably see me on television talking about the necklace. So, I never mentioned the earrings because I planned to surprise her with them as my anniversary gift. I got a phone call when I was getting ready to leave work. Susan said, “Hey Holland, what are you doing?” “Oh I’m on my way to meet Amanza at Rochesters, it’s our anniversary today.” “Did you forget what else
“You're joking, right?” Holland said. 'If you're doing this because you're jealous of Susie, you don't have to.' I ignored him and went to get the envelope. “Here, take it!”Amanza showed him the divorce papers.“Sign it.”"So you won't listen and let me explain myself?” "I don't want to hear it, Holland! Now sign the papers so I can get out of here!”“Listen! Susie isn’t who you think she is to me! Amanza, I never told you this, but she is my sister, and she is going through something, and I can’t just turn my back on her.”I sneered, “You have done a wonderful job taking care of her by knocking her up.”Holland looked puzzled, asking me. “What! How did you know about that?” That’s when the doorbell rang. Neither he nor I expected to see Holland’s mother, Kate. My mother-in-law is a nightmare, and shortly after that, another lousy dream follows behind her through the door, Susie. "Good evening, son." "Mom, Susan! What are you two doing here?" Holland asked, surprised. Kate ignor
“Amanza! Who's in the car? Your lover? Answer me!”I refused to answer as I stormed away from that house and the man I had lived with for three years. Holland kept calling my name: “Amanza! Amanza!” “Leave me alone! I’m not coming back! We have ended this charade of a marriage.""What?""Isn't this what you want so you can get back with Susie? I'm not stupid, Holland!" I continued to walk to the car swiftly. It was in the middle of winter, and it was cold outside. But I was too upset to feel anything. My blood was boiling, thinking about how he had slept with Susie and no doubt made passionate love to her the way he did with me and gotten her pregnant. When I had never shared myself with any other man except the man I had claimed as my husband. I wanted to have his child, but the constant badgering from his mother and his father made sly remarks about my style of dress and appearance. Living under the roof with someone who spoke up on my behalf or even tried to defend me was too st
“Man! It never fails. I always say the wrong thing when I'm with Amanza. How does she do it every time? She just brings out the darkest part of me.”I picked up the ring she had thrown on the lawn. See, I value my ring. In the heat of an argument, I didn't take off my wedding ring and throw it at her. I thought as I looked at my onyx and the gold wedding ring she gave me, which was still on my finger.I can’t believe that Collin was in that car with Amanza! Strange, how could that be? I know my eyes weren't playing tricks on me. It was him I saw through the half-open car window; I know I saw him. I wonder what he whispered in Amanza’s ear. Then he looked at me evilly as if he was angry. He glared at me, and I felt like he was threatening me! Some nerve! He's driving off with my wife and looking at me that way!For the first time, I felt aggression coming from him to me, as if he wanted to crush me. I had never seen that side of Collin, and he’s never acted that way toward me in the
I was worried about how my family would receive me, and it made me concerned, for the first month I had returned, wondering what everyone thought now that I was back home. I wouldn’t blame my family for their reactions. Since her broken marriage, especially with her father, Clinton. He didn't take my idea of marrying Holland too well. He knew Holland’s family and what he knew he didn’t like. But finally, I returned to the home where I grew up. I had missed the eight-bedroom, six-bath house and the many people here I had known since I was a child. What I missed the most was those early morning hours I had with my father before he would leave to go to the office. It had been three years since I left, and I wondered how he would react or what he might say now that I was back home. She had been avoiding everyone by sleeping late. It felt familiar and good to be home, yet strange, so I avoided everyone by sleeping late most days. I didn't know where the time went, but when I emerged from
“Hey baby girl,” My father greeted me, smoothing his paisley-print tie down before him.“Hi, Daddy,” I replied. “Are you busy? I need to talk to you.” “Come in and take a seat.” I am sitting at my desk with final designs and photos spread out all over my desk. I stopped working to give my father my undivided attention. I can tell by the look in my father’s eyes he was up to something. Sure, he was my father, and there was no other man on this planet I loved more, but his mere appearance in my office first thing in the morning meant he was about to ask me to consider doing something I would generally refuse. And from the way he pulled out the chair in front of my desk, with ever so slow movements before sitting as he stared at me with almost apologetic eyes, I knew my point of assessment was correct. “What is it, Daddy?” I was a little concerned.“You know I’m so proud of you. I know it was hard to get a divorce and come back home. But look at you now! I’m looking forward to your D
I glared at Susie, snatching my arm from her grasp, then pushing her so hard she bumped into Holland. “If you ever put your hands on me again, you will live to regret it!” Then with narrow slits in my eyes, I shook my head at Holland. “Pathetic!” I uttered, rolling my eyes and walking away.Holland stood there shocked, with a confused expression, stating. “Amanza?Susie shouts. “Are you going to let her get away with that?”“What do you want me to do? I can’t believe that was Amanza!” He stood there watching Amanza walk away. “Come on, let's go inside. Wait! Amanza!” He called out. “Holland! Why are you calling her? Wait for me!” Susie said, trying to keep up with his long strides.******Meanwhile, my plan to shock Holland is working out. But there is so much more shocking for you, Holland. Follow me inside. The woman who I was before marrying him, he has never met until tonight. I looked like a woman of wealth, but he’s about to learn my real identity as a power player in this city
Collin’s PerspectiveA week had passed. Collin knew he needed time to purge himself emotionally from his firm and close connection to Deja Amanza Wright. He filed away all the memories of wishing, thinking, and dreaming about the girl he had wanted for so long but would never have by his side. Collin sadly mumbled. "It's done."He flexed his hands open, then closed them tight against his knees, trying to push back the tidal wave of tears he felt. Logically, he knew that this was what he had to do. The pain coursed through his body to his broken heart. He couldn't keep hoping that he had an opportunity when there was none. So now it’s time to do and see things differently. If I stay in the same place emotionally, I fear I will be stuck and never move past my devastating loss. And as much as he wanted to hold on to these memories, never to let a single one of them fade. He prayed out loud. “Oh! God forbid let these memories disappear completely before they drown me.”Each day at work
“And, if I can have a second chance to capture love again, I think it will all be worth it.” “I wish things would have turned out differently. It would make my life so much easier if it were.""It's okay, Collin. Love can be a complicated thing. But it doesn't have to be if you find the right person for you. I’m not the right girl for you. Love can't be explained or quantified; it is something you must experience, and when you do, you will know. I promise you will know." Collin nodded, “Okay…I get it; it doesn't have to be me. I’ll accept that; I will be your friend. But do I have to be your brother-in-law? Yuk!”“Don’t make me laugh.” “No, I'm serious. I don’t get why it has to be Holland. He’s been a jerk all my life.” “No matter how I try to explain it, I know you, Collin. You will never understand. So don’t wreck your brain trying to figure me out. You probably will never get it because you have never been in love or married.”“So, I’m not on your level.” “That’s right…I have
Tonight, Deja's heart broke as tears came to her eyes. She couldn’t face him or answer his question, so she turned her back to him. “Collin, don't ask me that.” “Please, Deja,” He said, taking hold of her shoulders from behind. “I’m trying all I can to appeal to your sense of reasoning. “Oh…Collin, my father had no right to ask you that.”“I never had the chance to tell you how I feel, but I should let you know now that I got angry about your meeting with Holland.”“Collin,” Amanza took a deep breath and considered her following words carefully. "Collin, you're a great guy, and I care about you. However, I don't see this developing into a relationship if that's what you're looking for from me."He stared at her blankly like he hadn't heard her. Did he hear what she said? "You don't see it going anywhere?" he asked quietly. "No, I don't, I'm sorry." If he were hurt, he wouldn't have shown it. There was no anger or pain in his eyes. “Have you forgotten? I was there for you to pick up the pieces last time.”Amanza rolled her eyes. “This is not about Olivia but me?” “Yes, I don’t want to see you hurt again, Deja.” Placing her hand gently on Collin’s masculine hand in a reassuring manner. “Look, I’m a big girl and can care for myself. I’ve learned a lot, and I don’
"I don't know about us getting back together...but I did not know how I felt about him and was angry. All I can say is we talked and covered a lot like two grown-ups, and I know how I feel about him...""I'm still not following," he said quietly. "Even though our relationship is in question, I knew I loved him at one time, and he loved me. We've been married for three years, and after being divorced for six months. In two nights, we still found an attraction between us and chemistry. That’s all I’m going to say, do you understand?" Collin nodded his head slowly, thinking about him and Olivia. "So, you're keeping your options open but not hoping you two get back together. Right?” "Exactly. I’m keeping my options open. If he’s not the right guy. I'll move on." He stared at the table for a moment. "Have you ever considered the possibility that you're just emotional right now after going through the storm and so much this year? And since Holland happened to be there, it’s not mistake
"Hi, Deja." The masculine voice said with a hint of reservedness."Hey Collin, how are you?" “I’m okay.” “Thanks for inviting me out to dinner. I know this must be about Olivia, right?” She says, still staring at him strangely."Deja?" Collin calls her name.“Uhm, yes,” “What’s wrong? Why are you staring at me?”“O,h nothing."Ah, where are my manners?" Collin says, quickly standing to pull out a chair."Here, have a seat."Amanza takes a seat, still staring at him. She didn't know if Collin wanted to talk about anything serious with her or if he was just looking for a good time with his friend. But he wouldn't get anything from her that went on between her and Holland if that’s why he asked her for dinner."I ordered you a glass of red wine. Would you prefer white or something else?" "No red is fine. It's usually what I drink," Amanza says, still staring as she raises the glass to her lips. Collin sips his tequila, smiling nervously and showing a hint of curiosity about her behav
“Deja, I know me. I won’t tolerate no family being involved in my relationships. Girl, you know I’m outspoken. And if he’s anything like his brother, he could keep stepping. I won’t let anybody treat me like I’m less than them. No point intended.”“Trust me, I didn’t take it that way. And Holland was so different at the start of our marriage. But Collin doesn’t have the same issues that Holland has with the family. The family has disowned Collin, and Holland is the beloved older brother. I think they all mistreat Collin because of the dread of stepmother syndrome. I would put my head on a chopping block, and she’d be behind the wedge between Collin, his dad, and Holland. Holland still has his issues, but I think that can be improved with time.” “Wait a minute. Why do you feel that way? Have you been talking to Holland, missy?”Amanza smiles. “I know my ex. He is a made jerk, not a born one. I just have a hunch. Collin is a good guy, and he’s open-minded. Hey Olivia, he said for me to
Naturally, I was curious about his dinner with Olivia. I wanted to know his story before he asked me about minds. “So, welcome back to work. I certainly hope you enjoyed your time off." Amanza smiles teasingly, thinking of her two friends. I can tell by how he strolled into my office and sat directly in front of my desk. Ever-so-slowly, his eyes canvas over my face. His eyes told me everything and what he was thinking, 'I know Collin will be curious about what I did this weekend. It would be silly to share what happened between Holland and me, especially since everything is still in the air. Besides, Collin would probably call me a loose hussy if he heard the details. 'Which I'm not. I was quite strong emotionally, and I’m proud of my actions with Holland. I know I'm not the kind of girl to have sex with any guy. I'm a woman with needs, and Holland has feelings for me far deeper than he even knows.’ "Good morning, Deja," Collin greeted her, smoothing his crimson-red silk tie."Mor
