The response to my text came back immediately. "I'll be there shortly."
I still felt a mixture of sadness and anger, but primarily revengeful! I couldn't stop the fall of my tears as they leaked from under my closed lids. When I opened my eyes, they landed on the ripped-up check at my feet.
"The nerve of him to offer me money! Like I'm some cheap prostitute!"
This swirl of mixed emotions came in and out of my heart and mind as to how he cowardly abandoned me on our anniversary day for an ex-girlfriend, Susan Hubbard! I'm so furious right now!
“How could he treat me this way! After I put up with his crappy family and all of his bull in this marriage!”
My ride was on the way, so I hurried and went into the bathroom. I looked into the mirror, seeing the mascara running from my eyes down my cheek. I hop into the shower to clean up. I want to look my best for my night out in town. I patted myself dry, moisturized my skin, and found the sexiest dress. I brushed my hair and secured it with several pins at the crown of my head. I peered into the mirror and noticed the swelling around my eyes had gone down. Anyone would notice the slight puffiness under my eyes; I packed on more concealer to camouflage that I had been sobbing.
That’s when I heard the doorbell rang.
I went down the staircase and opened the front door, and I saw this lean figure standing by this red BMW coupe parked in my driveway. I smiled as I approached the car and was greeted with a hug and kiss on my scented cheek. It felt good to have someone else's arms wrapped around my body to comfort me.
“Can you come inside? I’m not quite ready.”
"Are you sure?"
"Yes, very sure. Holland isn't coming back here. So don't worry."
"Amanza, did you see this? After I rang the doorbell, I noticed this little gift-wrapped box on your front lawn, so I went to pick it up."
"Oh, that's why you were standing by your car. What is it?”
Once we got inside, I opened the gift box wrapped in the same material as the jewelry box for the ruby necklace he held in his hand when I saw him on the news program. Inside, it contained a pair of beautiful sapphire earrings.
“Wow! Are these beautiful earrings for you? They are the perfect color for your eyes. How did they get outside on the front lawn? Did you know they were out here? I’m assuming they must be your anniversary gift?”
When I saw them, I became even more disgusted. I couldn’t speak about it because I knew they must have been a gift he was planning to give Susan Hubbard. Holland must have dropped them in his haste to leave me to be by her side.
"DISGUSTING!" I said, taking the box and tossing it in the trash. I grabbed my purse. “Let’s go; I'm ready to leave.”
“Wait, Amanza! You just threw away a very pair of expensive, beautiful earrings. What is going on with you!”
“I don’t want them in this house! They are trash, in my opinion!"
“No, I’m sure they were meant for you. I’ll just take them out of the trash."
''Don't you dare! Who side are you on?!"
"I'm going to sit them here on the counter.”
“Let’s go!” I opened the solid mahogany door, and we left as we got in the car and drove away.
“Where do you want to go? So I can put the address into my GPS.”
“Straight to the hotel here in the city."
"Are you serious? I knew you wanted a good time, but I wasn't thinking that way. Okay, you got to tell me what’s going on. I was surprised you called me. We haven’t done something like this since you got married. After three years of marriage, I thought you would be in the thralls of celebrating your anniversary with Holland.”
“You’re right; I haven’t done anything. But that’s about to change tonight!”
“This is your anniversary tonight? What about your husband?”
“What about him?”
Is it over between you two?”
I hunched my shoulders.
“Something must have happened between the two of you. Did Holland do something?”
“I don’t have a husband. I have a man I’m married to. If he were concerned about me hanging out, he would be here if he did. Do you see him anywhere around?”
“Well, no....”
“Exactly! This is all about me and you tonight!”
“I’m livin’ it up tonight with you.”
“Okay, well, let me take you somewhere nice. So you can let off some of this steam.”

They arrived at Eminence Hotel, which was for members only. It has a nightclub, with exclusive shopping and excellent food. They serve you bubbly and play music in the background while the wealthy come and spend countless dollars.
"I'm starving and can use a strong drink! Let's go have dinner first."
"Whatever you wish."
After dinner, I felt tipsy. We went shopping, and I tried on the latest shoes, clothes, and accessories. As a platinum customer for years, I already own all the classics, but as the old saying goes, a diamond is a girl's best friend. I finally started having fun trying on whatever I wanted; I had held back from doing what I loved for three years. So tonight, I drank expensive champagne and danced.
“Oh wow! Amanza, you look so pretty in that dress. See, this woman I know is stylish, sophisticated, and glamorous. I never understood why you had to hide who you are from Holland. You are charming and smart just the way you are. You’ve changed so much trying to be a plain Jane just to make him happy.”
When Holland’s name was mentioned, my mood shifted, and I rolled my eyes. “Please don’t mess up my good buzz by saying his name. I can’t believe after all this time, three long years, he doesn't love me and wants sloppy seconds! I don't want a man who will criticize me and try to put me down if he wants to think that I'm cheating on him! Well, be my guest! It was only two hours ago that he was accusing me of cheating on him. Can you believe that?” I said tearfully.
"No," Arms swirled around me, holding me tight and letting me cry.
“Ah, sweetheart, don't cry. How could that be? What’s wrong with him? That's so absurd and foolish! Considering how much you loved him and have been devoted to your marriage, how can he fix his mouth to say such dumb, idiotic things to you?.”
“What's worse is that Holland's ex-girlfriend is back.”
“What do you mean back? Back in the city, or are you saying they are back together? Wait! Did you see them together?”
It's not just rumors. I wish it were, but when I met him at Rochesters for our night out to celebrate our anniversary. I saw Holland with her. He was wining, dining, and grinning up in Susan Hubbard's face like I didn't even exist in his life."
"What! Amanza, no, you must be mistaken. Not on your anniversary."
“She is his first love; you can tell he can’t shake her and has lingering feelings for her. The man forgot all about it; it was our anniversary today. Ever since Susie returned, he's been spending much time with her. “
“Oh wow! How low can you get? Amanza, you know how I feel about you. And I tried to be respectful of your decision. But he’s the lowest of the low, in my opinion!”
All I could do was sit there and cry when I saw them. “It hurt so bad! I never knew pain like this before. He’s my first true love.”
“I'm so sorry this is happening to you. Don’t tell me anymore. It makes me want to hurt him seriously. Let’s not talk about it anymore. You know, I’ve never liked or trusted Holland. Why have you stayed with this man as long as you have? I don’t understand. Now that he’s left you all alone on your anniversary, aren’t you ready to leave him? You don’t need him for his money or material things…and you don’t have any kids for this man. What’s holding you with him?”
“Wait. I got a text. Let me read it. It might be from Holland.”
I read the text message I received.
It was from Susan Hubbard.
After Reading the text, my heart slammed against my ribs.
"Amanza! Is everything okay?"
My hands trembled as I tried to hold onto my phone, staring at the words.
“I’m pregnant with Holland’s Child. We need to talk, Susie.”

When I looked at the time, it was around 11:45 p.m. The day of my anniversary has been nothing but one disappointing surprise after another. But tonight, it’s ending with a bang! The biggest surprising thing was yet to come. On my anniversary, I received a picture of a pregnancy test and a message that my husband's mistress was going to have his baby.Olivia took the phone and read the text. “That whore! Don’t give her the satisfaction of responding. Don’t let her see you sweat. Deal with it on your own time! Wait until tomorrow, make her wait, and leave her wondering. She was right. So I sat on the bed and removed my heels from my tired feet. 'What was I thinking? If he wants Susie, then he can have her! ' I burst into tears because I didn’t mean it. The mere thought of thinking about him with her broke me. I rocked back and forth, crying nonstop.“Oh, Olivia, I don’t want to lose him. What should I do?”“You are not going to let them get away with this! That’s what you are going to
Holland's POVOn the day of my anniversary, I left work excited. I had made it to that auction just in time to bid on the perfect pair of earrings. I saw them a few days ago, and they reminded me of my wife’s beautiful eyes. I just had to have them. But nothing went the way I had planned it that day. Once I won the bid to purchase this expensive jewelry, I knew reporters were at the event and would swarm around me to interview me. So, to disguise my wife's natural gift. I ended up bidding on the ruby necklace at the auction and won that bid, too. So, I knew that the bid would attract reporters to me. And Amanza would probably see me on television talking about the necklace. So, I never mentioned the earrings because I planned to surprise her with them as my anniversary gift. I got a phone call when I was getting ready to leave work. Susan said, “Hey Holland, what are you doing?” “Oh I’m on my way to meet Amanza at Rochesters, it’s our anniversary today.” “Did you forget what else
“You're joking, right?” Holland said. 'If you're doing this because you're jealous of Susie, you don't have to.' I ignored him and went to get the envelope. “Here, take it!”Amanza showed him the divorce papers.“Sign it.”"So you won't listen and let me explain myself?” "I don't want to hear it, Holland! Now sign the papers so I can get out of here!”“Listen! Susie isn’t who you think she is to me! Amanza, I never told you this, but she is my sister, and she is going through something, and I can’t just turn my back on her.”I sneered, “You have done a wonderful job taking care of her by knocking her up.”Holland looked puzzled, asking me. “What! How did you know about that?” That’s when the doorbell rang. Neither he nor I expected to see Holland’s mother, Kate. My mother-in-law is a nightmare, and shortly after that, another lousy dream follows behind her through the door, Susie. "Good evening, son." "Mom, Susan! What are you two doing here?" Holland asked, surprised. Kate ignor
“Amanza! Who's in the car? Your lover? Answer me!”I refused to answer as I stormed away from that house and the man I had lived with for three years. Holland kept calling my name: “Amanza! Amanza!” “Leave me alone! I’m not coming back! We have ended this charade of a marriage.""What?""Isn't this what you want so you can get back with Susie? I'm not stupid, Holland!" I continued to walk to the car swiftly. It was in the middle of winter, and it was cold outside. But I was too upset to feel anything. My blood was boiling, thinking about how he had slept with Susie and no doubt made passionate love to her the way he did with me and gotten her pregnant. When I had never shared myself with any other man except the man I had claimed as my husband. I wanted to have his child, but the constant badgering from his mother and his father made sly remarks about my style of dress and appearance. Living under the roof with someone who spoke up on my behalf or even tried to defend me was too st
“Man! It never fails. I always say the wrong thing when I'm with Amanza. How does she do it every time? She just brings out the darkest part of me.”I picked up the ring she had thrown on the lawn. See, I value my ring. In the heat of an argument, I didn't take off my wedding ring and throw it at her. I thought as I looked at my onyx and the gold wedding ring she gave me, which was still on my finger.I can’t believe that Collin was in that car with Amanza! Strange, how could that be? I know my eyes weren't playing tricks on me. It was him I saw through the half-open car window; I know I saw him. I wonder what he whispered in Amanza’s ear. Then he looked at me evilly as if he was angry. He glared at me, and I felt like he was threatening me! Some nerve! He's driving off with my wife and looking at me that way!For the first time, I felt aggression coming from him to me, as if he wanted to crush me. I had never seen that side of Collin, and he’s never acted that way toward me in the
I was worried about how my family would receive me, and it made me concerned, for the first month I had returned, wondering what everyone thought now that I was back home. I wouldn’t blame my family for their reactions. Since her broken marriage, especially with her father, Clinton. He didn't take my idea of marrying Holland too well. He knew Holland’s family and what he knew he didn’t like. But finally, I returned to the home where I grew up. I had missed the eight-bedroom, six-bath house and the many people here I had known since I was a child. What I missed the most was those early morning hours I had with my father before he would leave to go to the office. It had been three years since I left, and I wondered how he would react or what he might say now that I was back home. She had been avoiding everyone by sleeping late. It felt familiar and good to be home, yet strange, so I avoided everyone by sleeping late most days. I didn't know where the time went, but when I emerged from
“Hey baby girl,” My father greeted me, smoothing his paisley-print tie down before him.“Hi, Daddy,” I replied. “Are you busy? I need to talk to you.” “Come in and take a seat.” I am sitting at my desk with final designs and photos spread out all over my desk. I stopped working to give my father my undivided attention. I can tell by the look in my father’s eyes he was up to something. Sure, he was my father, and there was no other man on this planet I loved more, but his mere appearance in my office first thing in the morning meant he was about to ask me to consider doing something I would generally refuse. And from the way he pulled out the chair in front of my desk, with ever so slow movements before sitting as he stared at me with almost apologetic eyes, I knew my point of assessment was correct. “What is it, Daddy?” I was a little concerned.“You know I’m so proud of you. I know it was hard to get a divorce and come back home. But look at you now! I’m looking forward to your D
I glared at Susie, snatching my arm from her grasp, then pushing her so hard she bumped into Holland. “If you ever put your hands on me again, you will live to regret it!” Then with narrow slits in my eyes, I shook my head at Holland. “Pathetic!” I uttered, rolling my eyes and walking away.Holland stood there shocked, with a confused expression, stating. “Amanza?Susie shouts. “Are you going to let her get away with that?”“What do you want me to do? I can’t believe that was Amanza!” He stood there watching Amanza walk away. “Come on, let's go inside. Wait! Amanza!” He called out. “Holland! Why are you calling her? Wait for me!” Susie said, trying to keep up with his long strides.******Meanwhile, my plan to shock Holland is working out. But there is so much more shocking for you, Holland. Follow me inside. The woman who I was before marrying him, he has never met until tonight. I looked like a woman of wealth, but he’s about to learn my real identity as a power player in this city
Amanza smiled and said. "Yes, I'm ready even though this day has been like a dream, dad. I don't know how to describe it."Amanza's father smiled and said. "Holland seems to have come to his senses; your mother and I are happy for the both of you."They continue to walk. Amanza felt this overwhelming nervousness and excitement come over her. It was a good thing her father held her arm tightly. Amanza didn't know Holland would go this far to prove his devotion and love for her. It wasn't expected. It just keeps getting better and better. All eyes were on her again. "Dad, thank you for everything you've done for me. I love you and mom dearly. I'm so happy you got to be a part of my wedding this time."Her father smiled back and said. "We're always here for you. I will always be with you like I am today. Ready to support you if you need me to. But I'm confident Holland will take good care of you. Look, we both are getting emotional."Amanza's father opened the door. He stepped out first
Secret desires are those things we deny ourselves, perhaps because we think it’s not something we should do because, in some kind of way, we feel it’s wrong. Or possibly bad because it just feels so good. Or could we feel it’s someone we didn't think we should be with because of their background or lifestyle? Olivia tried to abstain because she knew that once she had gone all the way, she would never find her way back. She shook her head. ‘Deja kept secrets from me, too, and she hasn’t told me out of her mouth that she wants to get back with her ex-husband, Holland. So why shouldn’t I keep a little secret of my own.’She was thrilled about her new life with Collin. But she grappled over how she was going to control her needs. Olivia realizes how much she desires this man in every way.‘I guess I will focus on the celebration of this wedding, where it all will come out at the ceremony. I would never do anything to take away from my best friend's happiness. So, I will continue to work
"I see you are still a little uptight. Relax, we didn't sin." She nodded rather than trusting herself to agree or speak because she was unprepared to interact with this good-looking flesh and blood of a man she assumed she had sex with and for sure he was her husband.Olivia sat down at the table across from him. "Tell me what you remember? Don't leave out anything."She said in a remarkably calm voice, breathtakingly beautiful even first thing in the morning. 'I knew I made a good choice.' He mutters."Okay, promise me you will remain calm like this?"He took her small hand, his thumb caressing the soft flesh over her knuckles. As he lowered his head, his lips replaced his thumb."Now, if you don't remain calm, dear, I’m not going to tell you anything, you got that?" She could feel him tighten his grip the instant he touched her, attempting to extract her fingers. His head came up slowly."Take a sip of your coffee first." Those sable eyes met and captured his pair of dark brown
Olivia's eyes popped open, startled out of a deep sleep, hearing her blaring alarm clock go off, blasting the words! "If you liked it, you shoulda put a ring on it!" It was Beyonce's song screaming in his ear. She closes her eyes and turns off the pink and black alarm clock on the night table beside the bed. But that’s when a body next to hers begins to stir. Collin opens his eyes, disturbed by the blaring alarm. He looked around the unfamiliar room as the song loudly repeated itself. He grabs his chest and lets out a deep sigh of relief once the music stops.Collin turns his head, and instead of seeing the other side of his empty bed. He sees a head full of long hair. With a soft pink sheet wrapped around her body. Collin thought he must be dreaming as he asked himself, "Is this the mother of my babies?" He quietly lifts her hair from her face. He lets out another sigh of relief once he sees it's Olivia. Collin goes to wipe the pebbles of sweat from his face and notices a wedding
"Yes, give me one second to pull up this song on my playlist." She stood there smiling, looking up at how handsome he was under the moonlight while listening to the water caress the shore. A song she never heard before came on; Collin took her around the waist and settled his hand at the small of her back as they began to sway slowly and softly to beat to the song called "Paris in the Rain."He sang the song in her ear as they were moving in sync with the beat. His lips caressed the tender parts of her earlobe, and his voice melted her body, leaving it like whipped butter. Closing her eyes, it felt as if she was floating away; it felt like a dream that she didn't ever want to end. Collin continues to sing, placing his lips ever closer to her ear singing, fondling her earlobe with his lips and making her soft release moans of ecstasy. The love sounds she made were more exhilarating than the thrills of fans screaming his name. He wanted to call out her name over and over. When he gaze
Olivia honestly felt no pressure, just happiness, being and talking with Collin. She sat here tonight with him at candlelight dinner. There were sides of him that she simply loved. His cute, talkative way about him. And then there was this other side of him, this masculine, sultry, sexy young man sitting here with her, possessing a magnetic force that was making it difficult for her to resist him sexually.Even though, reluctantly, she was helping Holland have a surprise wedding for Deja, her best friend. She had her own decision she needed to make in regard to her and Collin. Since they spent time together, it was almost as if he could tell over time that she was surrendering without verbally saying it. Their conversation with him last night was quite intriguing."Yes, you know I'm not a traditional guy, nor am I average, so why live an average, ordinary life? Why waste time dating while at the same time being committed to only one person? That sounds like marriage to me. So why can'
Holland rolled over onto his back. "You mean we should get married again?" He chuckled. "Why baby, we are legally already husband and wife.""Yes, I know, but honestly, did you mean those vows when you said them to me?"The stress came over his face. His mind was in the thralls of making love for the first time in three years to his deliciously sexy wife, and now he's being stopped dead in his tracks! And he's a little bit shaken at her suggestion."You just said you would do anything to prove that you love me, and if you are sincere, I want to start over Holland. The first time was sudden, and it was a sham on your part. This time ,I want us to be seriously committed to one another and for everyone to know.""Is this everyone, meaning Susie Hubbard?""Especially her, Holland. You talked to her tonight and didn't mention anything to me. Other than what you thought I wanted to hear."He glanced at me. By the way, I held a frowning gaze with a healthy dose of curiosity and mistrust. Hol
"There's no turning back. So let's vow to put aside our three-year drought of a sometimes sexless and loveless marriage. I’m willing to give you what I want and what you want, Amanza. That way, we'll never have to be apart once we do this. You'll become my obligation. I want to start over again, vowing to you right now I promise to protect you, and love you and you'll be all mine."I laughed softly, "I don't feel married to you. But to be honest, Holland. For the last year of our marriage you have been more committed to someone else than to me. If I give into this temptation by letting everyone know we are married. I stand to lose a lot. I’m not the Amanza you knew. I’m an heir to a jewelry empire. I have so much to lose.""I want everyone to know we are in love. What can I do other than make it known to the world that I am your man, Amanza?"At this moment, utterly weak, fighting to be strong. I want to give in, but what will tomorrow bring? Will I have a shattered heart and life aga
Amanza's (POV)"Where have I been?" Amanza stepped away from his body."I went to solidify my love for you. I did that, and now you don't have to worry about me having a divided heart.""What about my heart?" I smiled, asking him."I like everything about your heart. The good and the bad." He leaned in to kiss me, his cold lips sending shivers that had more to do with the heat than the ice cream."Okay, okay. Good answer. So I will let you help me eat the rest of this ice cream." I say, kissing him again."You can't eat a pint of ice cream alone in one sitting, can you?""Yes, I can eat a pint in about five minutes by myself. That's how much I love ice cream." I said, leaping off the counter with the ice cream carton in my hand."Oh no, I can't let you eat all this ice cream alone. That would be a sin!""Come over here and join me," I say, taking off playfully and running away. After having me tell him I could consume the ice cream, Amanza hurried to grab a spoon as he took a seat nex
