When I had successfully satisfied that devil of a man, he allowed me to return to Seth, who had been patiently waiting for me in the parking lot. I was surprised to find out that he hadn’t left the car even when I had been gone for an hour.

I settled in the front passenger seat to meet the anxiety that rested in his eyes, and then told him, “Noah had agreed to visit my sister in the evening.”

“Can I now consider that we’re done with Noah?” asked Seth, wondering if we could now go back to our apartment and live in peace.

As much as I wanted to tell him that we no longer had to deal with that manipulating man, I couldn’t. We still couldn’t afford to separate ourselves from him, as he had the upper hand over me. If I were to cease all contact with him, he would leave Anne again, which would lead her to look for me again.

“I am not sure about that,” I answered with visible regret on my face, feeling the crushing weight of the guilt that was deeply instilled within me. “I am afraid Noah wou

There was something wrong with everyone in my family. They all seemed to be lying to me while pretending to be nice. Since I had already convinced Noah to visit them and take Anne away, I did not understand their motive in showering me with unnecessary kindness, something that I had always been deprived of as a child.“You’ve always been ignorant of my emotional needs,” I said, unafraid to highlight the sudden change in my parents’ behaviour. “You’ve always prioritized my older sister over me.”“Anne is a sensitive child. She needs more care,” argued my mother, reluctant to acknowledge her biased attitude towards me.“Does it mean you’ll neglect your younger child because of the same?” I asked, unhappy with my mother’s inability to see her error.Seth, who could see that I was getting upset about the entire confrontation, grabbed my hand and took me away from them to my room. Once we were alone, he told me that I would never get the answers I deserved.“They will never accept the fact

Now that Seth was gone, I was on my own for everything. I, therefore, decided not to step outside until I was called into Anne’s room. The expression on her face had significantly changed from before.“Come, sit beside me,” proposed Anne, with a gentle smile. Since she had tried to kill me in the past, I couldn’t trust her.“I’m fine standing,” I answered, trying to maintain my distance from her.“You sure know how to hold up your walls, Christie,” remarked my sister, unhappy to see me staying away from her.“I have had people confuse my kindness for weakness, which is why I have to be careful about being too close to anybody,” I said, trying to provide her with my reasons for staying away from her.Without minding a single word that left my mouth, Anne quickly changed the subject of our discussion, asking, “Was it hard getting Noah to listen?”“It is always hard dealing with him,” I answered, taking a seat on the chair away from her. “He doesn’t easily trust people.”“How did you do i

The evening did roll around with all its expected anxieties. We were all settled in the main hall with our eyes peeled for the man who was supposed to visit us. While I doubted Noah would go back on his word and ditch us, it wasn’t impossible. After all, he had said that he wouldn’t accept Anne until he was assured she was carrying his child.“What should I do if he doesn’t show up, Momma?” questioned an anxious Anne, who could no longer sit patiently at her spot. “How will I raise my child without a father?”“No such thing will happen, dear,” assured my mother, rushing to her older daughter’s side to comfort her. “He loves you and the child dearly. He will come for the both of you.”“That’s right,” agreed my father. “He understands the importance of an heir for his family business, which is why it is highly unlikely that he wouldn’t want you and your child.”I stayed seated on the couch and only stood up when I finally saw the familiar figure walking into the hall. Before I could get

Now that everything was sorted, I decided to go away, which was why I didn’t have dinner with my family. I didn’t dare to sit with them and discuss the future of my ex-boyfriend with my older sister.‘Since Seth is tending to his grandmother, I should go back to him as soon as possible,’ I thought to myself, taking hold of my handbag. As soon as I turned to leave my room, I spotted my sister standing in the doorway. I could tell that she wanted to talk about something that would make me the most uncomfortable, the method I used to bring Noah back into my life.I, therefore, told her that I wasn’t feeling well and wanted to be left alone. She had the habit of getting whatever she wanted, so she couldn’t leave me alone. She placed the back of her hand over my head and asked me if I had a fever.“It’s not that. I am just too tired,” I said, removing her hand. “I am going home.”“Home? Isn’t this your home, Christie?” questioned Anne, unprepared to see me leave. “How will our parents feel

I entered my apartment to meet an atmosphere bereft of comfort, for it had been pierced by the festering ache since the day I had come there to seek refuge from my ex-boyfriend, who had chosen my sister over me.Such an unexpected rejection had weighed heavy upon my shoulders, like something one could feel as a burden one was carrying but could not shake off. I closed the door behind me and the soft click of the lock, in the midst of that silence, reverberated like a reminder of my isolation.Every step that I took, and each breath I made, felt like a chore—as if my heart was dragging me down, refusing to let her move on. What had been happy, treasured memories of my time with Noah now tortured me, existing only to remind me of what I had lost and what my sister had gained. It was as though the pain was a living, breathing thing, heavy in the air and weighing me down, making it hard to think, hard to breathe, hard to be. It was overwhelming to me, but there was no other way out of the

I wanted to spend a weekend with Seth, just dossing around, getting out of this emotional jumble that seemed to make such a mess of my life lately, something that was supposed to be the balm to the soul, an answer to whether what I was feeling for him could grow into something deeper. He deserved to be loved—unwaveringly, wholeheartedly. I wanted to know if I could give it to him. His grandmother was recuperating well; he was free from that weight; and his cheerful attitude seemed to echo a promising future. We, therefore, pulled into the seaside resort town just as the sun began its drop toward the horizon, bathing all it touched in a warm, golden light. Waves nuzzled the beach, a gentle sound mollifying my racing thoughts. Seth was easy with his smile, and his eyes locked onto mine like I was the only one to share his world, and my heart fluttered with a feeling that hadn't happened to me in a long time. What was this foreign feeling? Why did I get butterflies in my stomach? We check

  • WARMING THE BED OF MY BROTHER-IN-LAW   WHAT DO YOU WANT FROM ME?

Getting back to school and work after spending time with Seth in the getaway was almost like waking up from a beautiful dream into reality. The chattering of students, the bellowing of the school hallways with the usual chatter, ringing of the bell, and rustling of papers marked its familiar elements. The indifference of my peers seemed to bring me back to normal. But beneath the surface lurked the knowledge that my sister was pregnant with Noah's child, a truth I had found out only recently, which had further complicated matters in a jumble of emotions. I, however, followed my conscience and was fine with letting him go.Everything seemed to be going fine until lunch, when I saw him again. Noah. He was standing at the school entrance, talking to one of the parents. A presence as unsettling as ever. His eyes locked onto mine with a chill, calculated look. His gaze seemed to say it wasn't a coincidence that he was there.I took a deep breath and walked up to him with steady steps, while

The coffee shop was a small, rustic place; the huge wooden tables and hum of an espresso machine in the background set the atmosphere. Soft chatter from other clients created warmness in the space. Yet, even in this cozy setting, tension sat between Noah and me, an almost invisible barrier that seemed to electrify the air. I took a deep breath, trying to steady my nerves as I sat down across from him. In his eyes was some strange intensity that unnerved me—so unlike his usual confidence, his calculation."Noah," I began, my voice steady but cool, "what is it you want to talk about?"He leaned back in his chair, his fingers lightly drumming on the table. "We need to discuss Seth."Hearing Seth's name on his lips was a kind of violation in and of itself, reminding me of the hugely complicated situation that the three of us shared. "What about Seth?" I tried to sound as neutral as possible.Noah's gaze speared me, but then I saw a flicker of something unreadable go through his eyes. "I ca

  • WARMING THE BED OF MY BROTHER-IN-LAW   I CHOOSE LOVE

The morning sunbeams were streaming through the bedroom windows, warm and golden, that covered everything with a soft glow. I slept in a bit later than usual, enjoying the serenity that had become a constant in my life. Life had changed in so many ways, and for the first time in what felt like forever, I was finally happy.I turned to my side and smiled at Seth, still sleeping beside me. His chest rose and fell in a steady rhythm, his face relaxed, and his hand rested near mine as if he unconsciously sought me even in his dreams. This was my life now—this love, this stability, this sense of belonging.A soft flutter in my stomach made me smile even wider. The secret I had been carrying for weeks was growing stronger, more real, and soon I would share it with Seth. This thought filled my heart with equal parts of excitement and nervousness, but mostly joy.I slipped out of bed without waking him, padding into the kitchen. The house was quiet, the silent kind that makes you feel at home

  • WARMING THE BED OF MY BROTHER-IN-LAW   WANTED TO HOLD YOU ONE LAST TIME

~Noah’s pov~The walk back to my apartment seemed to stretch endlessly. My feet moved in a mechanical sequence, one in front of the other, but my mind went round and round, reenacting the scene at Christie and Seth's house. Her words echoed louder than the traffic, louder than the distant hum of the city."I don't belong to you. I never did."I had been so sure—so certain—that if I just showed up, if I just made her see what we had, she would remember. That she would feel the same pull, the same ache that I had carried with me since the day we parted. But she hadn't. Her gaze had been steady, her voice firm, as she told me that she had moved on. That the new Christie didn't need me. Didn't want me.When I finally reached my apartment, I sank onto the couch without bothering to turn on the lights. The dim glow of the streetlamp outside cast long shadows across the room, fitting for how I felt inside. It was the first time in years that I allowed myself to think—really think—about every

I heard a knock. It was sharp and insistent against the quiet rhythm of our morning. I was at the sink, washing dishes, while Seth worked on something at the table. The sound jarred me, and for an instant, I hesitated. Something about it—urgent, almost aggressive—put me on guard."I will get that," Seth said, already standing up from his seat.I quickly dried my hands and trailed after him, wondering and afraid. He opened the door, and I was to confront the last person I could have expected to meet- Noa.He looked exactly as I recalled him: tall, broad-shouldered, blonde hair tousled. There was something in his eyes, though, that I had never seen before: desperation.Christie, he whispered aloud, his voice low but fervent, his eyes fixed hard on mine.I froze as if my breath was physically caught in my throat. It was to see a ghost, a fragment of a life that no longer exists for me. Seth tensed up beside me, his grip on the door's edge tightening."Finally, Noah," I said, my voice cra

  • WARMING THE BED OF MY BROTHER-IN-LAW   EXACTLY WHERE I WANTED TO BE

The restaurant was warm and dimly lit. A faint aroma of garlic and freshly baked bread clung to the air. Seth sat across from me, as calm and steady as always, his fingers lightly tapping against the base of his wine glass. I studied him discreetly: a sharp line of his jaw, a slight crease between his brows when he was lost in deep thought. He looked utterly, amazingly tired, as if he wanted tonight different, better.I also wanted it.The past weeks were turbulent, and therefore a jumbled mass of feelings that I couldn't make sense of.Memories I thought I'd long since buried—the evanescent meetings with Noah, leftovers from a life that had belonged to someone else—emerged now to haunt me at odd moments. So long I had harbored these memories, allowing them a slice of myself. Now sitting here with Seth, I see just how much they took.Christie?" Seth broke into my thoughts, his voice soft but tinged with angst.I blinked, realizing that I had silently stared at him. "Sorry," I said qui

  • WARMING THE BED OF MY BROTHER-IN-LAW   DON'T LET ME GO!

Seth had come down with a fever recently. Illness had washed the colour from his cheeks and put shadows under his eyes. More than his look, though, the silence that crept in during those days seemed to live in my head: distance, but not out of malice. More out of fear.I hovered by the door of our bedroom, hesitant to step inside. Seth had asked me to come in, his voice steady but with an edge of something I couldn’t quite place. Resignation, perhaps? Pain? I couldn’t tell. The thought sent a shiver down my spine. This was the man who had been my anchor, my unwavering support, and now he seemed so… tired.I entered at last, and he sat on the edge of the bed. His shoulders were slumped, heavy with a weight I didn't understand yet. He looked at me then, his dark eyes softer than usual but unmistakably determined. My stomach tightened at the look."Christie," he said, his voice calm but strained. "We need to talk."My heart sank. Those words—they were never good. They heralded endings, s

  • WARMING THE BED OF MY BROTHER-IN-LAW   NOT MY GIRL?

Walking home with Noah, I felt a lightness in my chest that I hadn't felt in so long. It was as if a weight had been placed upon one shoulder and then, in effect, had flipped to the other, if only for a fleeting moment. I laughed at something he said; in this case, not really listening to what he said, but to the comfort enfolding us. It was a cool evening air, adorned with a soft breeze that brushed my cheeks, and streetlights softly lit the path before us. I knew I should not have agreed to walk with him. I knew this was wrong. But Noah had this strange pull on me, something that was beyond explanation and resistant to stopping. His presence felt familiar and cozy, and at this moment I cleared all the mess and madness from my mind. I let myself enjoy it, let myself pretend everything was easy and matter-of-fact, despite knowing deep inside of me that it wasn't.I should have stepped back when approaching that house. Reality was slowly sinking in: where and what I was doing stood rig

  • WARMING THE BED OF MY BROTHER-IN-LAW   YOU MAKE MY HEARTBEAT FASTER

The air was crisp in the afternoon, and I had to leave the workplace, my mind buzzing with routine as it has just completed. It was an ordinary day in all aspects, yet it felt off about it somehow. I don't know if it was the heavy clouds that hung low in the sky, threatening to break and pour rain anytime, or maybe it was the strange heaviness that I had been carrying with me these past few days—the weight that I couldn't explain. Seth has been so patient and loving, but I still felt. unsettled about something.I wasn't expecting to see him again-Noah. It had been unsettling enough the last time we met, but there he was, literally standing by the aisle of the same departmental store I wandered into, tossing items into a basket as if this were something absolutely normal in his world. My heart skipped a beat the moment I recognized him. It had resulted in betraying my body with a flush of heat that I couldn't ignore. I tried to calm my breathing, try and remind myself of everything Set

  • WARMING THE BED OF MY BROTHER-IN-LAW   SAY YOU BELONG TO ME

As we walked into that house that night, my brain would still glisten with the words spewed by Seth. All that weight, all that heaviness - Noah and those lies, manipulation, twisted web which life has become. My chest felt like it was stuck in some heavy fog, where nothing could be distinguished clearly, nothing trusted as what was thought to be known. Even Seth, the man who had been there for me, seemed at a distance somehow. The puzzle he'd given me, it seemed, was not pieced back together either; no matter how very hard I tried, those pieces wouldn't mesh.Seth treated me gently when he brought me home, like fragile glass that might break if one breathed too hard on it. And in his eyes, I saw the worry, the sadness, the hope that maybe, just maybe, this was the night that might change things between us. I had seen him trying everything to make me feel special, make me smile, and a part of me wanted to give him what he so desperately needed: a sign that I was coming back to him. Tha

  • WARMING THE BED OF MY BROTHER-IN-LAW   WHY DOES MY HEART ACHE FOR HIM?

I thought Seth was taking a leave from work for spending the day with me, which rather seemed to be a sweet gesture, but deep inside, upset me. We had been so tensed against each other lately without either of us being able fully to articulate what was nagging; it would always hang there in mid-air like an invisible barrier. While I would have liked to dissuade him from leaving, at the same time, I could not reject him. Seth had tried hard to make things be normal by bending over backward and doing all in his power; the least I could do was try to meet him halfway. We went out to a great little restaurant. It had a warm, cozy atmosphere. The low illuminations were rich in earth tones. After all, there isn't a setting more perfect for anyone who ever wanted to feel at ease. Couples were scattered all over the room, some laughing, some whispering low over glasses of wine, and it was one of those scenes-the kind of atmosphere which usually lulled me into a state of peace, but tonight mad
