Was it pain? She asked herself. No, it couldn’t be. She knew pain; she had felt it over and over again that it was like a sister to her more than her real sister ever was.
Aurora had become accustomed to the pain and she had developed a certain numbness that made her feel like she had immunity to pain. So she was sure, it wasn’t pain. But whatever it was, it made her heart tingle. Maybe it was anger or maybe it was disappointment. It had to be a disappointment. After all these years, her father had no love for her. She always thought that he kept her in the house because deep down he had some fatherly feelings for her. Oh boy was she wrong? Feelings? What feelings could a man like her father even have for her?She couldn’t help but laugh. He didn’t even hesitate to throw out of the house once his favorite daughter and wife lied to her.Her eyes watered, but she couldn’t, she wouldn’t shed a tear. They weren’t worth her tears. She never cried after years of the bullying and taunts of her stepmother. Flogged, slapped, abused emotionally and physically, she never cried. So why should she cry because her father never cared for her?Apart from blood and water that flowed through her veins, a burning sensation of revenge coursed through her veins.Staying in that mansion and seeing everything she deserved being snatched away from her made her grow an indescribable sense of hatred she always managed to ignore. But now, she was going to let that hatred and fury fuel her cause. As she walked on the road with her bloodshot eyes and nothing but her worn-out bag, the only thing she managed to sneak out of, the rain started pouring heavily. Aurora didn’t know if the heavens were adding misery to her already hard life or if they were blessing her plans. Whichever one it was, she wasn’t going to let anyone stop her or stand in her way.The people she cared about had either died, like her grandmother and mother or they had left her, like Nana Clarisse. Then her best friend….. Forget it, she wouldn’t remember such painful things. She was going to make the Devanes pay a very hefty price and take back everything that was hers, no matter what. She was going to make the world know the true faces behind this deceptive family.Every drop of blood they took from her, she was going to take triple of it from them.Rory was kind…..to an extent and very patient. Patient enough to know every flower blooms in its own time. But like her kindness, her patience was also limited. She understood that slow and steady never won the race. Realistically, the dog was faster than the tortoise and there was no reason for the dog not to win, however, the tortoise was more cunning so it won. That was what her understanding of patience was restricted to.So lost in her thoughts, that she didn’t hear the sound of the car coming behind her. The car behind her also didn’t see anyone because of the rain.Bam!The car hit Rory and she rolled from the bumper down to the opposite end of the car to land on the floor.“Sir, I think we hit something or… someone” The middle-aged chauffeur informed his boss. He was unsure. If it were a person, that would be very troublesome.“Then what are you waiting for? Go check” The boss instructed his driver, impatiently. The driver came down and went behind the car, to see a young girl lying on the floor, struggling to stay awake and covered in blood.“Sir we hit someone!” He exclaimed. The person in the back seat, who was in his early sixties came down from the car too. He didn’t look his age. Even with the rain falling, one could tell he wasn’t an ordinary person.Because when he heard they hit someone, he was still very calm.Aurora wanted to close her eyes. She wanted to sleep. The day had been a long day for her. From being accused of pushing her half-sister off the stairs to being thrown out of her house and getting hit by a car, she wanted to so badly fall asleep. She was gradually losing consciousness.“Carry her. We’ll take her to the hospital. Hurry up!”Rory couldn’t make out who was speaking or what was being said, however, she felt safe and she finally passed out.***Her whole body ached and any slight movement felt like she fell down a cliff-not like she knew the feeling. She struggled to open her eyes and when she finally did, the light overwhelmed her, and she winced in pain and shut it back almost immediately. After blinking and adjusting to the light, she opened it. Everything was blurry, then she blinked and it became clear.“Where am I?” She asked herself.Everywhere was white and there was a machine beside her, beeping. Was she in a hospital? Her attempt to get up was wasted, because the sharp pain in her right leg made her scream in pain.Just then, the doctor walked in with a nurse behind him.“Don’t try to sit up or even stand. Your right leg is in a bad shape. You need to undergo surgery”“Surgery?” That is what Rory would have said if her voice wasn’t squeaky. She would have been afraid, but she knew why her voice was like that. She must have been in the hospital and asleep for a long time.“It’s okay. You’ve been asleep for about three days now.” The doctor explained and Rory nodded. The nurse holding a notepad, gave Rory a glass of water, which she accepted gratefully, and helped her drink it. She didn’t even realize how thirsty she had been.“As I was saying, your tibia is shattered not just from the accident. It’s been like that for a while, is what we have noticed. We suggest doing a bone graft”“I know. Can I hold off the surgery for a while?” Her voice was hoarse.“I don’t advise that. It’s an old fracture. The more you hold off the surgery, the more difficult it would be to heal it.” The doctor expected her to show signs of fear, but her dark blue sparkly eyes revealed calmness. It was like she already knew all these things.“Like I said, I know. When can I be discharged?” It wasn’t a question. The doctor noticed. She didn’t want to have the surgery now. She wanted to leave the hospital, ASAP.“Miss….”“Rory”“Miss Rory, I don’t think that this is-““Doctor, when can I be discharged?” She interrupted him and asked again. This time more techy.“Miss Rory.” He called out grimly. He was in his early forties, with grey hair. His hair was gelled back professionally. He seemed like a nice person who genuinely cared. She wasn’t a difficult person. But now was not the time for all of that. She needed to do things. She sighed and said placidly, “I know you are doing your job, but I can’t stay here for much longer. I’ll have the surgery, but not now. Please.”The doctor wanted to say more but decided against it.“We’ll watch you today and tomorrow and if all goes well, by the end of the week you’ll be discharged. Just don’t put too much pressure on your leg” He warned her. She was a very beautiful girl. However, she looked malnourished. She reminded him of his daughter.Rory nodded at his words.“Oh and one more thing” He did a check-up. After he was done, he wanted to leave the room. The doctor turned back around when he remembered something important.“An old man brought you here. He gave me his card to give you. He would have stayed, but he had something to attend to”“He was the one that hit me, right?” She asked.“Yes.” He handed over the card in his pocket to her.***The doctor wanted to discharge her by the end of the week, however, she insisted on leaving the next day.She knew about her leg, so she wasn’t worried about it. It’s just the accident that made it worse. Having been used to it, she didn’t dwell on the issue any longer. She hung her back over her shoulder. The bag contained ten thousand dollars she managed to save from the lousy allowance her father had given her over the years. She didn’t want to accept it, but for the sake of keeping up her appearance, he gave her an allowance and sent her to school. She sneered. Even the school was a terrible private school that had no facilities and the teachers had no interest in teaching. They didn’t even have a teaching degree. Her thoughts were put to an abrupt stop when she sensed something was off.She surveyed her surroundings but saw no one.Strange. She thought. She kept walking, hoping to hail a cab. However, the feeling still didn’t wear off. She quickened her pace.Even if she was just paranoid, it’s better to be safe than sorry. She cautiously turned back and saw a man behind her wearing a black hoodie. Then their eyes met. The man suddenly smirked. The kind of smirk that told you to fear for your life and Rory made a run for it.However, it seemed like he wasn’t the only one. Immediately she ran, four other men ones she could see- went after her.She kept running until she met a dead end.“Fuck! A dead end!” She was about to lose her mind.“That’s right, sweetie. It’s a dead end for you.” The voice sent shivers down her spine. It was evil and creepy. She ignored the pain in her legs and her unsteady heartbeat and turned around to face the men, calmly. The men were stunned at how beautiful she looked. She had blue eyes that sparkled in the scorching sun. Her face was round but had no flesh. She was very thin. But that only made her look like a little kid.“Who sent you?” She asked cautiously.“It doesn’t matter, because you,” one of the men brought out a pocket knife, “you will go and meet your maker very soon”They were five and they formed an arc in front of her.The man in the middle seemed like a leader and spoke up.“She’s very beautiful don’t you think? She’s just not fleshy, but having someone this beautiful to accompany you for the night would be a pleasure. What’d you say, little girl? Spend a night with me and my men and I won’t kill ya?” They all looked at her like prey, with lust visible in their eyes. They were utterly disgusting.“Over my dead body.” She said in the coldest and most disgusting voice she could muster. She spat at the boss’s face. The boss used his finger to swipe the spit and licked it.“Delicious” Rory almost puked.“As you wish little girl” One of the men, the shortest started coming towards her with his knife and wanted to slash her face, but Rory dodged. She took off her bag and hit him in the face with great force.“You bitch! You’ll pay for this!” Another goon shouted in anger. She didn’t waste time and kicked another man, who wanted to grab her, in the balls.Surprised that she did that, Rory used that to bolt. They were right behind her and her legs were growing weaker. She started limping until she came to a car park and saw only one car- a black MaybachWithout thinking, she opened the door entered the back seat, and sat down. She was surprised that the car was even unlocked. She started panting heavily. Rory didn't even notice that someone else was in the car.She was still busy calming her heart down.It wasn't until she heard a cold voice beside her say, “Get out”She turned her head to the side and was stunned. She hadn't seen a lot of men in her life, but this man was way too handsome. He had grey orbs and hair as black as the night. He wore an Armani suit and sat cross-leg, like the king of the world. He had a high nose bridge, a well-defined jaw, and eyebrows sharp as knives. Then his eyelashes were long and curly, it made her envious. That was the only thing feminine in his body and they fit him for perfectly. His legs were long and he had an aura that made everyone cower in his presence.Even Rory, who wasn't scared of anything, couldn't help but feel overwhelmed by his presence.“I said get out.” He repeated with no sympathy in his voice. He watched the girl’s face beside him change from awe to disbelief. She was very beautiful. He admitted. And he had seen a lot of beautiful women. But she stood out. Her hair was in a very messy bun, with strands falling down her face. Her round face was flushed red from running. She was wearing worn-out sneakers, with her hoodie being small for her and torn and her joggers were tight and were far above her ankles. Yet she still looked like ethereal.“Boss, I think she ran to the car pack!” She heard the voice of one of the goons. The glass was unfortunately not tinted and she saw them approaching the car. When they arrived at the car door, she grabbed the man by the collar and pulled him in for a kiss.Daniel, who had never been speechless or caught off guard, was in a state of shock. She was inexperienced, and her soft, pink lips moved brashly against his. He wanted to pull away—he could have pulled away—but for some reason, he was intoxicated by her smell, her lips, and by… her. Maybe. However, he was sure that if it had been anyone else, he would have long strangled them. Rory had never kissed anyone before, but she just couldn't let the men find her. If they did, God knows what they would do to her. She didn't know what she was doing, but she was glad the man didn't push her away. He grabbed the back of her neck, pulled her in, and took the lead. He was skilled, and Rory, a fast learner, caught on and followed the rhythm. It was just to let the men go away, so why didn't she pull away? The man had gone away when he saw two people passionately kissing. When Daniel was about to deepen the kiss, Rory suddenly pulled away. She gasped for air. They'd been kissing for quite a while
Chapter 3. Illegitimate. When he came downstairs, he saw that food was on the table and the smell was really good. He didn't eat breakfast so he thought the cook prepared it for Rory. But it was too early. She probably wouldn't wake up until ten, so why did they prepare it this early? On the dining table were different kinds of foods people ate for breakfast: Bacon and scrambled eggs, toast, pancakes and honey, waffles and whipped cream, orange juice and milk. The spread was nice. So much for one person? It also smelled really good. Then he saw Rory bringing out a bowl of what he recognized to be Tofu Scramble. The table also had jugs of orange juice, milk, and coffee. *** Her eyes closed naturally. She knew she was going to be hit for what she did. She was always beaten when she spoke out or got herself into matters that her stepmom always said didn't concern her. However, after a few seconds passed, she noticed that the slap never landed. She opened her eyes, still h
When they got back home, Rory just locked herself up in her room. It had been hard standing. Her legs were in so much pain. She went to see them and they didn't even ask how she was or where had she been like normal parents. All they were concerned about was Samantha. She was really unlucky. *** Daniel got changed in another room and went to his study. He was catching up on work, but he couldn't focus. Rory's face kept popping up in his mind. They hadn't known each other for long but he knew she wasn't someone who got emotional easily. So what could have happened? She was a chatterbox yet she didn't say anything through out the car ride. He paused in his thoughts. Was he worried for her? He ignored the nagging feeling in his heart and continued his work. However, no matter how hard he tried he couldn't shut her out. At last, he conceded and called his assistant into the study. "Any updates?" Daniel called Frank, who was "Any updates?" Daniel called Frank, who was already preparin
Was this girl dumb or what? She was very amused. "You have to compensate me." The girl demanded. "Why should she compensate you? It was clearly an accident, Clara!" Kay glared at her and a lot of people agreed with her words. "Mind your business, Kay. It's between me and her!" She said with annoyance. Kay wanted to reply but Rory glanced at her telling her to be quiet. "How should I compensate you?" She said with a cryptic smile. The girl, who was Carla, smiled satisfactorily. "Wipe off the Mac and cheese from my clothes. Right now." "Okay!" Rory accepted. She went to a table, picked up the water from there, and walked back to Clara. By now everyone's attention was on Clara. Clara was the school bully and Rory was the new student, so everyone was curious about what would happen. Without saying a word, Rory opened the bottle of water and poured it on Clara's head. She emptied the entire bottle. "Ah! What did you just do?!" Clara screamed. "What you told me to". Rory replied
The next day at school. Sammy was finally discharged and came to school today. Her friends flocked around her and started sympathizing with her. "Sammy,it must have been hard on you". One girl said. "I wonder who would have done such a terrible thing to you?" Another girl said. "If I ever find that person,I would beat the person to a pulp!" Another girl said angrily. No one knew about Rory's identity as the real young miss of the Devane Family that's the reason Sammy couldn't say who actually pushed her and left the identity space blank. If word got out that she was the illegitimate daughter and her mother was the mistress she would be done for. Her reputation in the society would plummet to the ground. It couldn't happen. Sammy's eyes were lowered so no one could see what she was thinking. Everyone thought she was nice and sweet. .... Rory walked into the school. Her hair was blown by the breeze. She looked like a painting. As she was walking, she spotted a familiar face and her
"Rory! Rory!!" Kay rushed into the class while yelling Rory's name. Rory raised her eyebrow calmly sipping juice from a small juice box. "You're so calm?! How can you be so calm, when the whole school thinks that you are a gold digger?!" Kay asked a little flustered and angry. How was she so calm?! Rory just glanced at her and didn't say anything. It took longer than she expected. She knew that the only person who could spread this kind of rumor is her sister,Sammy. This morning's incident must have annoyed her. She has seen been through a lot of heart ache and torture,so why would such words affect her. She wasn't that squeamish. She had lived with Sammy for a long time and she was well aware of the right buttons to press and calling her an illegitmate child did the trick. This was all part of the main plan. Everything would soon be clear soon. As Rory was unaffected, her classmates were not. They were all upset. "How could people think that?" One person said with anger in his voi
Rory wasn't moved and just felt bored by their nonsense. By now, Clara's screaming caught the attention of passerbys and they all stopped to watch what was happening. "What nonsense are you spouting?" Terrance looked at Clara with clear disgust. "Now am spouting nonsense? I wonder what she did to you to make you stand up for her? She's just a harlot and an orphan! Don't fall for her tricks! She's only using you for your money!" Clara warned Terrance. Everyone nodded their heads in agreement with some even adding their comments. "Clara is right! She's really shameless!" "How can a prostitute be in an institution of learning?" "I don't even want to stand on the same ground as her, talk more of breathing the same air with her!" "At such a young age, she's already engaging in such disgraceful acts!" "She's just a pretty face!" "She got into the school with a backdoor entry and to top it off she used unclean money to do so!" Terrance glanced coldly at them. These people were obv
Rory came down stairs with a small blue box in her hands. "Rory where did you get the money to start schooling?" Mrs Devane asked her. "None of your business". Rory simply replied. "Rory!" Mrs Devane yelled at her. "How dare you?!" Rory laughed and said matter of factly,"You kicked me out of the house and told me I am no longer part of the family. So what I do with my life has nothing to do with you!" "Rory, mom is just looking out for you. Moreover isn't it strange that out of the blue you just start attending one of the most expensive schools in the town with no explanation. People are bound to spread rumors". Sammy said as if she was trying to help Rory out. Rory sneered at them. This mother and daughter pair are really something. "The daughter of a mistress can go to school freely with no criticism but I can't?" Rory asked calmly. Her words made the color on both the mother and daughter's face drain. Mrs Devane's face darkened. "Who are you calling a mistress?!" "You of
I have no words to express the immense happiness and joy I feel over this book. I was very young when I started this book two years ago and I made quite a lot of errors😂. I didn't upload for a while and so many mistakes that I wanted to give up on this book but my editor gave me the best advice that has helped me so much in my writing career: Always keep writing. To all the votes, comments, and readers, I just want to say thank you for joining me on this story. Rory and Daniel’s story will forever have a place in my heart as one of my best works. But this is not the end of their story! You can see them in future sequels of all the characters in this book. No character is being left out but this is their story so any plot points not explored in this book will be explored in their books. I am also done with the sequel of this book, “My Professor and I, on another app. If you want to check it out, it's on the other app that ends with Novel and starts with Web. Thank you for staying
The sun kissed the horizon as golden waves lapped softly against the shore. Rory’s laughter filled the air, a sound Daniel had feared he might never hear again. She ran ahead of him, her hair whipping in the salty breeze, her bare feet sinking into the cool sand.“Come on, slowpoke!” she called out, grinning over her shoulder.Daniel jogged to catch up, a small smile tugging at his lips. The past year had been a blur of pain, healing, and rediscovery. Therapy had helped Rory process the loss of their unborn child, and while the ache would never fully vanish, she had learned to carry it with grace. Daniel had his own scars, some visible, others etched deep within, but seeing Rory’s light return had made his burdens lighter.“Slowpoke?” he teased, catching her around the waist and spinning her. Her laughter bubbled out, bright and free. “I’m the one who kept up with you in therapy runs, remember?”“Barely,” she quipped, playfully swatting his arm as he set her down. They walked along th
The hospital room was a hollow shell of life, filled with the mechanical hum of the ventilator and the faint beeping of the heart monitor. Rory sat by Daniel’s bedside, her fingers gently wrapped around his cold, unmoving hand. The once vibrant man she loved was now a pale reflection of himself, his face gaunt, his body thinner than she remembered. His smile, the light in his ocean-blue eyes, the warmth of his laughter—all of it had vanished into the sterile silence of this room.Rory’s cheeks were streaked with tears, her throat raw from months of pleading. She spoke to him as though her words could reach him, as though somewhere in the depths of his unconsciousness, he could hear her and find his way back.“Daniel,” she whispered, her voice trembling, “do you remember that summer we spent by the lake? You swore you’d teach me to fish, but I ended up tangling the line so badly we had to cut it. You laughed so hard you couldn’t even be mad at me.”Her fingers tightened around his, as
The ambulance lights flickered like a warning, their red glow staining the night. Rory knelt beside Daniel, her trembling hands pressing against the gushing wounds. Blood soaked through her clothes, hot and unrelenting, as though time itself had opened its veins to bleed alongside him. His face was pale, his lips cracked, yet his eyes-oh, those eyes--still found hers, still held her like an anchor in the storm. "Stay with me, Dani," she whispered, her voice a broken hymn. But her words fell like ash, scattered by the wind. His smile was faint, weaker than the last exhale of a dying candle. "You will always... make me stay." And then his eyes fluttered closed. She screamed. A sound ripped from the marrow of her bones, a raw and primal anguish that silenced the world around her. Nate flinched at the sound, his breath hitching as he stumbled back. Rory crouched over Daniel's body, her hands now shaking too violently to apply pressure to the wounds. She was crumbling before him,
Rory’s gaze locked onto the tail lights flashing like taunts in the distance. The night was thick, the road weaving like a black ribbon through the desolate countryside. Nate gripped the wheel beside her, jaw clenched and eyes narrowed in concentration, while Oliver sat in the backseat, his laptop balanced on his knees, fingers flying over the keys.“They’re gaining speed,” Rory muttered, adrenaline flooding her veins. “Can you keep up, Nate?”He gave her a quick, fierce nod. “I’m not letting him get away with Daniel.” His voice was tight with determination, as he pressed down harder on the gas. The engine roared in response, pushing the car forward as it veered dangerously around another sharp bend.Oliver’s face glowed from the laptop screen in the backseat. “I’m trying to hack into Jordan’s phone,” he said, his tone laced with urgency. “If I can disrupt his GPS or disable the car remotely, it’ll give us an advantage.”Rory threw a glance over her shoulder. “How long will that take?
“Right!” She yelled, jerking away from Jordan’s evil touch. “Really? Well, I’m sorry, love. Your guess is wrong!” Jordan informed her and she closed her eyes, trying to stop the tears from flowing.“Please don't kill them! Please!” She pleaded and Jordan clicked his tongue repeatedly. “Awww. But you should have guessed properly!” He brought out a gun and shot the woman on the right in the head. ‘Bam!’“No!” She shrieked. “No, no, no! You monster! You freak of nature! No wonder your parents die! They deserved to die than to see the monster that you've become! Yes! They deserve to die!”“What did you just say?” His head snapped to hers, looking her dead in the eyes, his gun pointed at her, daring her to speak. The gunshot echoed in her ears over and over again but she didn't care. He should get it over with. “I said that your parents deserved to die the way that they did! Who would want to have a deformed and debased being as their son? I most certainly would not even if my life depen
[Trigger Warning: Mention and mild depiction of SA. I tried my best to shorten it.]***They said darkness enveloped you when you were dead. However, Rory felt the opposite. Darkness shrouded her because she was hopeless. Because no one was going to save her but herself. That's what she did. She played the part of a docile girl after the beatings Jordan had given her. She stopped saying, ‘Fuck You’ and curled herself into a ball and sobbed. Jordan crouched down beside her, as her shoulders shook. “Awww. Weren't you the one who wanted to pretend to be brave, Aurora? You know I like you like this. Weak, defenseless, and helpless.” He reached out and touched her hair, twirling them in his fingers but Rory kept shaking, tears streaming down her face.It felt like a thousand horses were stampeding on her body and that she was being thrown off a cliff, over and over again that the pain became a sound. It was a sound at this point, pushing her to the brink of insanity.Jordan smiled, a rea
The table was the only thing dividing Oliver and Daniel. But what kept Daniel calm was a mystery to Oliver as the video on his laptop played. Daniel had aged badly. He had stubble, his eyes were heavy, and dark circles covered the beauty of his steel eyes, still, the sharpness in them swirled as he peered at the screen. What was playing was a blurry video of a woman in the car who had almost hit Nana Clarisse as she tried to escape. It was very fleeting and unclear but he got a glimpse of those blue eyes and he knew who it was. His Koala. “How is the old woman?” he asked monotonously. Life had been sucked out of him these past few weeks and to make matters worse Rory’s family had been attacking his company non-stop because they blamed Daniel for everything. Oliver understood that they had lost their daughter twice and this was a normal reaction but how did this solve the problem? Although both sides were working together to save Rory. That was the most important thing at this poi
The car sped down the road, its headlights cutting through the night like blades. The hum of the engine was the only sound in the tight space, broken occasionally by the crackle of the walkie-talkie. Rory packed at the side of the road, gathering her thoughts. “This is The Riddler to Sleeping Beauty, do you copy?” Jordan’s voice came over the static. “The Riddler. I like ‘The Riddler’ but that’s already taken. What about ‘The Puzzler’? No that sounds terrible. What do you think, Sleeping Beauty?” Aurora hesitated, her fingers gripping the steering wheel so tightly that her knuckles whitened. Her eyes narrowed in on her target. The task he gave her was to run over Nana Clarisse, who was buying something beside the road. He wanted her to kill her Nana? How could she? How would she? “Sleeping beauty? I asked you a question. Which name do you want me to use? I need an answer.” Rory would never take for granted his light and playful tone. He never joked around. Everything he said was
