Chapter 3. Illegitimate.

When he came downstairs, he saw that food was on the table and the smell was really good. He didn't eat breakfast so he thought the cook prepared it for Rory. But it was too early. She probably wouldn't wake up until ten, so why did they prepare it this early?

On the dining table were different kinds of foods people ate for breakfast: Bacon and scrambled eggs, toast, pancakes and honey, waffles and whipped cream, orange juice and milk. The spread was nice. So much for one person? It also smelled really good.

Then he saw Rory bringing out a bowl of what he recognized to be Tofu Scramble.

The table also had jugs of orange juice, milk, and coffee.

***

Her eyes closed naturally. She knew she was going to be hit for what she did. She was always beaten when she spoke out or got herself into matters that her stepmom always said didn't concern her.

However, after a few seconds passed, she noticed that the slap never landed.

She opened her eyes, still holding caution, who knew what kind of psychopath he was? She got married to him, didn't mean she trusted him. She trusted no one but herself.

She observed that Daniel just stared at her with furrowed brows. He didn't understand what was going on in her mind. Did she think he was going to hit her?

Rory chuckled nervously and said, "You know what, it's not necessary to eat breakfast. It's fine if you don't want to"

Daniel just walked past her, went to the dining table, and sat down.

Aurora was stunned. He changed his mind.

Minutes passed and she heard Daniel ask irritatedly, "Do you need an invitation?"

"Oh right. Sorry," She joined him and they both started eating.

They were eating in rather comfortable silence, like couples who had been living together for years and believed that talking would spoil the harmonious atmosphere.

Once Daniel took the first bite out of the tofu scramble, he was impressed that he couldn't stop himself from taking the second bite and the third. He was a workaholic and rarely ate, thus resulting in him having stomach problems, one that he didn't take care of and progressively got worse. He didn't even know the reason he even agreed to have breakfast with her. He just did.

"I don't hit women" Daniel finally broke the silence and Rory looked up from her meal. She was pleasantly surprised that he was assuring her. They just met but she already caught on that he wasn't someone who liked talking, let alone reassuring someone. It felt nice.

She was about to say something but her face fell when she heard the continuation that she didn't know was meant to be said.

"Even girls…"

"Then you got married to a girl and according to the law, marriage is between a man and a woman, not a man and a girl, so that makes you a pervert" She retorted. How dare he?

"Are you sure you are a girl?" Was his response when he stopped eating and stared in her direction. But she noticed he wasn't looking directly at her as he uttered his statement.

Rory followed his line of sight and saw he was looking at her chest. Her flat chest.

She covered her chest with her hand, jumped up in fright curled up her legs on the chair, and yelled, "You pervert!"

She threw bacon in his direction, but unfortunately, she missed and fell to the ground.

She saw Daniel staring at her with a mocking look in his eyes as if saying, "And you said you weren't a kid"

Daniel finished his plate and Rory asked excitedly, "How was it? Was it good? Do you want more?"

"Noisy" Hearing his reply, Rory pouted.

"Such a meanie!"

Daniel paused and said blandly, "Not bad"

"Really?" Her eyes lit up like she just received an amazing gift for Christmas. She had never been complimented before. It wasn't a compliment, per se but it was the closest thing to a compliment she had ever received from someone who wasn't her grandma and her Nana.

She noticed he didn't eat much. He only ate two slices of toast and drank the coffee.

Daniel stood up and was about to leave when he saw the chef walk in.

The chef was an older woman wearing a chef's outfit. Her brown eyes went wide with shock when she saw the feast on the table.

She saw Rory sitting down at the opposite end of the table, head buried in her food.

"If you don't know your job, it's better to let someone else do it for you" Daniel's voice was colder than ice. The chef just bowed her head and quickly apologized, "It's my fault, sir"

Rory felt bad for the woman. She was scolded because of her. She wanted to speak up but Daniel had already left.

"Ah! Such a grumpy man" She shook her head.

The chef was about to leave but Rory stopped her.

"Hi. I'm Rory. And I'm also sorry for what happened. It's my fault. I just thought I should cook dinner because I thought it was my duty and that landed you in trouble" She apologized sincerely.

"You don't need to apologize to me, young madam. I didn't know you would be an early riser. If I had, I would have gotten up earlier" The chef explained.

"Don't worry about that. Just make breakfast at the usual time you make breakfast for Daniel"

"But the young master doesn't eat breakfast…." She covered her mouth with her hand. She said something she wasn't supposed to say.

"What do you mean by that?" Rory grew curious. How could someone not eat breakfast?

"Nothing. I'll prepare breakfast by 7 am every morning. Is that okay ma'am" The chef bowed her head and ran away before Rory could reply.

"Weird"

***

Daniel remembered Rory's face when he raised his hand and voice and for some inexplicable reason his heart clenched.

What did she go through in the Devane house?

"Frank, find out everything on my wife."

Frank was in shock at his words. 'His wife?' Was the boss finally liking someone after her.

***

"She's such an unfilial child! She's nothing like my Sammy!" A woman who was in her mid-forties spoke resentfully. The person who spoke was Mrs. Devane, Aurora's stepmom.

Her patience wore thin when she kicked Aurora out of the house. That good-for-nothing dared to push her daughter down the stairs. Her baby landed in the hospital and she has been here for a week. It's all thanks to that disgraceful child.

"Mom, don't say that. Rory didn't mean to do it. It was an accident". Her voice was gentle. She was Sammy. She was lying on the hospital bed. Her face was extremely pale and white. Her face alone could make you want to protect her. She looked weak.

"An accident? It wasn't an accident. She deliberately pushed you off the stairs, Sammy!" Mrs. Devane argued. She wasn't having any of it.

"But mom…"

"But nothing!" Mrs Devane interrupted Sammy. She was a mother and no mother would watch and allow their daughter to go through any pain. Now her daughter was in a hospital she would never forgive Rory for this. Her anger vanished when she looked at her daughter's pale face.

"Look Sammy, you are a beautiful and kind-hearted girl who loves to see the good in people and Rory is your sister so you'll want to stand up for her. But let's call a spade a spade. She doesn't deserve your sympathy in the slightest." Even her tone became softer.

"Mom…"

"Sammy, listen to your mother. She knows what's best for you." Her father, Mr Devane spoke.

"She didn't even come visit you after she pushed you down the stairs!" Mrs Devane scoffed.

"Pushed you? When did I ever push you?" A cold voice sounded from the door.

They all turned around and saw Rory. She looked different. They all stared at her with shock. Especially Sammy.

"You excuse of a girl! You still have the cheek to say you didn't push her. If you didn't then who did?" Mrs Devane was the first one to attack her.

She shrugged her shoulders and cooly replied. "I already said I didn't push her. Why don't you ask your precious daughter?" Rory said sarcastically.

Sammy's face turned paper white.

"Rory!" Mr and Mrs Devane both shouted her name. Mrs Devane was fuming with anger.

"Sshh! This is a hospital. If you shout they might kick you out". She reminded them casually.

"Oh my God! After all we have done for you. Do you still repay us like this? I mean what else did I expect from a classless illiterate like you?" Mr Devane said annoyed.

"And who is to blame for that?" She retorted. They were all startled. Rory had never talked back to them before!

"Besides Mr. Devane, you should take a good look in the mirror before pointing fingers at anyone". She added. Mr Devane was mad but he couldn't refute it.

"Rory, don't talk to Dad like that. He is only doing this because he is hurt by your actions". A clear soft voice sounded. If it were in the past, Rory would have fallen for this. Her sister was such a good actress. She deserved an award.

Rory laughed and said to Sammy. "Last time I checked, illegitimate children didn't have the right to speak. So who gave you the right to interfere in my matters?" Her tone was like the breeze but it carried a lot of weight.

Sammy immediately shut up. Her eyes were filled with viciousness. How dare she? She was a nobody and she dared to call her illegitimate? She was going to make her eat those words.

"Rory you ingrate! If you didn't come here to visit Sammy, then why are you here?" Mrs Devane's voice rang.

She was bored and had nothing to do and Daniel went to work. It was 2 pm. After they got married, she was introduced to the servants in the house. The servants immediately liked their new mistress.

"Oh I was bored and had nothing to do, so I said why not come to check up on my dear sister". She said casually.

She went over to Mrs Devane, who was standing beside Sammy's bed, and her voice low as she said, "You were surprised to see me alive, weren't you?"

Mrs Devane, Vivian, face didn't even flicker "I don't understand what you mean".

Rory rolled her eyes and said, "Don't act dumb. We both know what I mean. So drop the act. How would everyone react if they found out that underneath the mistress of the Devane house is actually a mistress and a desperate one at that?" Her lips curved upwards.

"No one will believe you over me!" She said with confidence.

"Are all second wives foolish?" She wondered. Vivian gritted her teeth. Her eyes became cold.

"It is true no one would believe me. But if I have evidence, someone would believe me, right?" Her question made Vivian's eyes go wide. She must be joking. There was no evidence, right? She replaced her fear with a smile.

"There is no evidence because I didn't do anything". She said proudly.

Rory smirked and said, "We'll see about that".

"What are you two whispering about?" Hector eyed them.

Rory chuckled and slung her arm around Vivian's shoulders. The action seemed intimate but Vivian stiffened.

"Nothing father. Just mother and daughter talk."

Vivian choked and Samantha scowled at Rory.

"Alright y'all, I'm off." She turned to Samantha and said, "get well soon, sister and please don't say because of me you couldn't feel better. Adios!" Before anyone could reply, she left the room.

What did she mean by that? Her words made Vivian feel something was wrong. Everything about her was different. It wasn't as simple as it looked.

The satisfaction she had was already top-notch. She got out of the hospital and saw a familiar Maybach car parked a few meters away from the hospital. Her black hair was blown by the breeze. This was her first time coming out. She inhaled the fresh air.

She walked to the car and got inside. Rory saw Daniel typing on his laptop. He looked busy.

However, he spoke to Rory without looking up. "The registration has been confirmed. You can start tomorrow".

Good, very good. She can start tomorrow. They deprived her of a life and now she has the opportunity to live freely, she definitely won't waste it. Starting tomorrow was just perfect for her.

However their actions towards her hurt like

hell. Normal parents would have cared about her whereabouts. Hector didn't even as much as ask about her well being. She looked out the window, her eyes watering yet she refused to cry. Why didn't her father care about her? Wasn't she worthy of love like Samantha?

When they got back home, Rory just locked herself up in her room. It had been hard standing. Her legs were in so much pain. She went to see them and they didn't even ask how she was or where had she been like normal parents. All they were concerned about was Samantha. She was really unlucky. *** Daniel got changed in another room and went to his study. He was catching up on work, but he couldn't focus. Rory's face kept popping up in his mind. They hadn't known each other for long but he knew she wasn't someone who got emotional easily. So what could have happened? She was a chatterbox yet she didn't say anything through out the car ride. He paused in his thoughts. Was he worried for her? He ignored the nagging feeling in his heart and continued his work. However, no matter how hard he tried he couldn't shut her out. At last, he conceded and called his assistant into the study. "Any updates?" Daniel called Frank, who was "Any updates?" Daniel called Frank, who was already preparin

Was this girl dumb or what? She was very amused. "You have to compensate me." The girl demanded. "Why should she compensate you? It was clearly an accident, Clara!" Kay glared at her and a lot of people agreed with her words. "Mind your business, Kay. It's between me and her!" She said with annoyance. Kay wanted to reply but Rory glanced at her telling her to be quiet. "How should I compensate you?" She said with a cryptic smile. The girl, who was Carla, smiled satisfactorily. "Wipe off the Mac and cheese from my clothes. Right now." "Okay!" Rory accepted. She went to a table, picked up the water from there, and walked back to Clara. By now everyone's attention was on Clara. Clara was the school bully and Rory was the new student, so everyone was curious about what would happen. Without saying a word, Rory opened the bottle of water and poured it on Clara's head. She emptied the entire bottle. "Ah! What did you just do?!" Clara screamed. "What you told me to". Rory replied

The next day at school. Sammy was finally discharged and came to school today. Her friends flocked around her and started sympathizing with her. "Sammy,it must have been hard on you". One girl said. "I wonder who would have done such a terrible thing to you?" Another girl said. "If I ever find that person,I would beat the person to a pulp!" Another girl said angrily. No one knew about Rory's identity as the real young miss of the Devane Family that's the reason Sammy couldn't say who actually pushed her and left the identity space blank. If word got out that she was the illegitimate daughter and her mother was the mistress she would be done for. Her reputation in the society would plummet to the ground. It couldn't happen. Sammy's eyes were lowered so no one could see what she was thinking. Everyone thought she was nice and sweet. .... Rory walked into the school. Her hair was blown by the breeze. She looked like a painting. As she was walking, she spotted a familiar face and her

"Rory! Rory!!" Kay rushed into the class while yelling Rory's name. Rory raised her eyebrow calmly sipping juice from a small juice box. "You're so calm?! How can you be so calm, when the whole school thinks that you are a gold digger?!" Kay asked a little flustered and angry. How was she so calm?! Rory just glanced at her and didn't say anything. It took longer than she expected. She knew that the only person who could spread this kind of rumor is her sister,Sammy. This morning's incident must have annoyed her. She has seen been through a lot of heart ache and torture,so why would such words affect her. She wasn't that squeamish. She had lived with Sammy for a long time and she was well aware of the right buttons to press and calling her an illegitmate child did the trick. This was all part of the main plan. Everything would soon be clear soon. As Rory was unaffected, her classmates were not. They were all upset. "How could people think that?" One person said with anger in his voi

Rory wasn't moved and just felt bored by their nonsense. By now, Clara's screaming caught the attention of passerbys and they all stopped to watch what was happening. "What nonsense are you spouting?" Terrance looked at Clara with clear disgust. "Now am spouting nonsense? I wonder what she did to you to make you stand up for her? She's just a harlot and an orphan! Don't fall for her tricks! She's only using you for your money!" Clara warned Terrance. Everyone nodded their heads in agreement with some even adding their comments. "Clara is right! She's really shameless!" "How can a prostitute be in an institution of learning?" "I don't even want to stand on the same ground as her, talk more of breathing the same air with her!" "At such a young age, she's already engaging in such disgraceful acts!" "She's just a pretty face!" "She got into the school with a backdoor entry and to top it off she used unclean money to do so!" Rory came down stairs with a small blue box in her hands. "Rory where did you get the money to start schooling?" Mrs Devane asked her. "None of your business". Rory simply replied. "Rory!" Mrs Devane yelled at her. "How dare you?!" Rory laughed and said matter of factly,"You kicked me out of the house and told me I am no longer part of the family. So what I do with my life has nothing to do with you!" "Rory, mom is just looking out for you. Moreover isn't it strange that out of the blue you just start attending one of the most expensive schools in the town with no explanation. People are bound to spread rumors". Sammy said as if she was trying to help Rory out. Rory sneered at them. This mother and daughter pair are really something. "The daughter of a mistress can go to school freely with no criticism but I can't?" Rory asked calmly. Her words made the color on both the mother and daughter's face drain. Mrs Devane's face darkened. "Who are you calling a mistress?!" "You of

The next day was Saturday so she wasn't going to school. She went downstairs for breakfast only to find that she was the only one at the table. "Zoe, is Daniel not joining us for breakfast?" "No Rory. He's in the study,so he won't be able join you for breakfast."Butler Zoe answered. Rory nodded and didn't ask any further questions. It wasn't that butler Zoe was the only servant in the house, but she first met butler Zoe, naturally she'd be close to him. There was also Cecilia who she called Cece. Cece was also a major figure in the house like butler Zoe but wasn't as powerful. After breakfast Rory decided to take a tour around the house. Apart from her room and the library that Daniel showed her yesterday, she hadn't really been to any part of the house. Exploring the house was in was the best option and it would really help her not to die of boredom. Rory started with the huge garden that had different flowers. Some of the flowers she knew while the rest were all foreign to her.

"Yes we have a guest"Butler Zoe informed. A guest? "A guest?"She asked. "Yes"He replied. She gently nodded. She really didn't want to go. She'd rather spend the whole day in this room playing the piano. However,it won't be nice to send the guest away so she agreed. Rory followed butler Zoe and she made sure she marked the directions of the route to the piano room. When they reached downstairs, she saw a handsome man with black hair and black eyes. He was wearing casual clothes and he looked about Daniel's age. The man had an aura that was powerful and aloof but he wasn't as cold has Daniel. The man looked up and saw the darkest blue eyes staring at him with curiousity. Rory was carefully observing the man and the man was doing the same to Rory. His curiousity was piqued. Why was there a girl in Daniel's house? Daniel didn't like women. So who was she? Was she a friend? Of a relative of some sort? But Daniel didn't even like his mother visiting him. Rory’s gaze locked onto the tail lights flashing like taunts in the distance. The night was thick, the road weaving like a black ribbon through the desolate countryside. Nate gripped the wheel beside her, jaw clenched and eyes narrowed in concentration, while Oliver sat in the backseat, his laptop balanced on his knees, fingers flying over the keys.“They’re gaining speed,” Rory muttered, adrenaline flooding her veins. “Can you keep up, Nate?”He gave her a quick, fierce nod. “I’m not letting him get away with Daniel.” His voice was tight with determination, as he pressed down harder on the gas. The engine roared in response, pushing the car forward as it veered dangerously around another sharp bend.Oliver’s face glowed from the laptop screen in the backseat. “I’m trying to hack into Jordan’s phone,” he said, his tone laced with urgency. “If I can disrupt his GPS or disable the car remotely, it’ll give us an advantage.”Rory threw a glance over her shoulder. “How long will that take?

But you should have guessed properly!” He brought out a gun and shot the woman on the right in the head. ‘Bam!’“No!” She shrieked. “No, no, no! You monster! You freak of nature! No wonder your parents die! They deserved to die than to see the monster that you've become! Yes! [Trigger Warning: Mention and mild depiction of SA. I tried my best to shorten it.]***They said darkness enveloped you when you were dead. However, Rory felt the opposite. Darkness shrouded her because she was hopeless. Because no one was going to save her but herself. That's what she did. She played the part of a docile girl after the beatings Jordan had given her. She stopped saying, ‘Fuck You’ and curled herself into a ball and sobbed. Jordan crouched down beside her, as her shoulders shook. “Awww. Weren't you the one who wanted to pretend to be brave, Aurora? You know I like you like this. Weak, defenseless, and helpless.” He reached out and touched her hair, twirling them in his fingers but Rory kept shaking, tears streaming down her face.It felt like a thousand horses were stampeding on her body and that she was being thrown off a cliff, over and over again that the pain became a sound. The table was the only thing dividing Oliver and Daniel. But what kept Daniel calm was a mystery to Oliver as the video on his laptop played. Daniel had aged badly. He had stubble, his eyes were heavy, and dark circles covered the beauty of his steel eyes, still, the sharpness in them swirled as he peered at the screen. What was playing was a blurry video of a woman in the car who had almost hit Nana Clarisse as she tried to escape. It was very fleeting and unclear but he got a glimpse of those blue eyes and he knew who it was. His Koala. “How is the old woman?” he asked monotonously. Life had been sucked out of him these past few weeks and to make matters worse Rory’s family had been attacking his company non-stop because they blamed Daniel for everything. Oliver understood that they had lost their daughter twice and this was a normal reaction but how did this solve the problem? Although both sides were working together to save Rory. The car sped down the road, its headlights cutting through the night like blades. The hum of the engine was the only sound in the tight space, broken occasionally by the crackle of the walkie-talkie. Rory packed at the side of the road, gathering her thoughts. “This is The Riddler to Sleeping Beauty, do you copy?” Jordan’s voice came over the static. “The Riddler. I like ‘The Riddler’ but that’s already taken. What about ‘The Puzzler’? No that sounds terrible. What do you think, Sleeping Beauty?” Aurora hesitated, her fingers gripping the steering wheel so tightly that her knuckles whitened. Her eyes narrowed in on her target. The task he gave her was to run over Nana Clarisse, who was buying something beside the road. He wanted her to kill her Nana? How could she? How would she? “Sleeping beauty? I asked you a question. Aurora awoke with a pounding headache, her temples throbbing in rhythm with her heartbeat. A low groan escaped her lips as her eyes fluttered open, but she instantly regretted the movement. The world around her was dim, blurred. She could feel the rough wood pressing against her back, the cold bite of tightly knotted ropes digging into her wrists and ankles. Panic gripped her, sharp and immediate. She was tied to a chair. As her senses slowly returned, fragments of memory surged forward in jagged flashes. The sound of a gunshot echoed in her mind. Zoe... Butler Zoe was shot. Her heart clenched, bile rising in her throat. The old man, who had cared for her like a father, had died. For her. Because of her. A tear slipped down her cheek, unbidden and burning. She quickly blinked it away. She couldn't break now. Zoe's sacrifice couldn't be in vain. She had to get out. Daniel stepped into the dimly lit house, expecting the usual stillness, but instead, a strange scent filled the air—coppery, metallic. His pulse quickened as he scanned the room, his eyes freezing at a horrifying sight. Butler Zoe, his loyal companion, sat slumped against the couch, blood staining his white shirt, the fabric darkened around a bullet wound in his chest. “Zoe!” Daniel’s voice broke as he rushed forward, falling to his knees. His hands hovered over the wound, shaking, unsure where to press, where to help. Zoe’s breath was shallow, each inhale a desperate grasp for life. “Mr. Daniel…” Zoe’s voice was faint, almost swallowed by the gurgling sound in his throat. He tried to lift his head, but the effort seemed monumental. “Where’s Rory?” Daniel’s voice was frantic now, his hands pressing harder against Zoe’s wound, trying to stop the relentless flow of blood. “Where’s my wife, Zoe? Aurora sat at the long, polished oak table, the clink of silverware on china filling the air. The dining room was imposing with its towering walls lined with ancestral portraits that seemed to watch her every move. Her family—the family she had only just found out about—sat across from her, each holding a strange, silent tension. It was as though she were a foreign object, placed delicately on the surface of their world, and no one was quite sure what to do with her. Her mother, Anita, sat at the head of the table, her face a carefully constructed mask of poise, though Aurora could see the warmth of curiosity beneath. Her eyes darted occasionally to Aurora, as though she couldn't quite believe her daughter was real. Her father, Romero, gripped his wine glass a little too tightly. Didn't everything start this year?” Rory furrowed brows. “I’ve been receiving threatening messages from an unknown number after Blaire’s banquet. The first one was sent to Malcolm: ‘Sleeping beauty has pricked her finger.’” “And you didn't think to tell me? That my kidnapping was not by the Devanes?” Rory’s voice hardened. She wondered what other things he was hiding. Their hug at the hospital didn't mean their relationship was fixed. She wasn't sure if their relationship could ever be mended. “Let’s not stray off-topic for now.
