CHAPTER FIVE
SOPHIE
One moment we were in the car and the next, we were at the registry. I glance down at the thick certificate in my hands, feeling lost.
“Even if you regret it, there’s no going back now,” Dominic’s deep voice pulled me out of my thoughts and he had a sly smile on his face.
“I don’t,” I shot him a glare and glanced down at the certificate again before putting it in my bag. “And you can’t tell me what to do!”
Dominic didn’t say anything but the way he smirked told me that he could and he planned on doing so.
Just as expected, Dominic went over the rules of our marriage and made me sign a lot of contracts. That alone made me wonder what I had gotten myself into.
“Our marriage is only for the public. Don’t get the wrong idea. I can never love you, I don’t do love,” He said.
I rolled my eyes at him, “I’d rather stick my head in a tank of water filled with electric eels than fall in love with you.” I shot back at him and he received it with a small, knowing smirk.
After our bicker, Dominic had a team of stylists get me ready. I knew I married him to take revenge on Ethan but I didn’t know it’d be so soon. I thought I’d get at least two weeks of preparation but no, the man didn’t waste time.
The team got me ready in no time, made me pretty, and I couldn’t even recognize myself, but Dominic didn’t even spare me a single glance even while we sat in his car.
I didn’t want his validation, I didn’t even need it. I just wanted to know what was going on in his mind, and possibly figure out why he hated Ethan so much, because I had a feeling that this was more than just business rivals.
“How do I look?” I angled my body to fully face him, with a wide smile on my face.
Dominic turned to look at me and his eyes roamed over my body, longer than necessary, making me feel self conscious, but then, he looked up to meet my eyes and he sneered, “Ex convict.”
“What?”
“You look like an ex convict.” He muttered and turned away from me.
What the hell? I chuckled dryly in disbelief. He’d have easily ignored me rather than this. Was this man even real?
We sat in silence throughout the entire ride and when the car came to a halt in front of a grand hall, he finally turned to me, “You know what to do,”
I swallowed hard and nodded, then he got out of the car, walked over to my side, pulled the door open for me and stretched out his hand.
I forced out the best smile I could muster, took his hand and stepped out. Almost immediately, the paparazzi started going crazy, surrounding us, taking photos and asking questions.
“Mr Hayes, this is the first time you’ve ever been seen with a woman. Is this good news?”
“Mr Hayes, who’s the woman beside you?”
“Should we be expecting news about your marriage?”
Dominic led me through the red carpet, ignoring all of their questions and soon, we were seated in the main hall.
I unconsciously glanced around, searching for Ethan but he was nowhere to be seen. I forced myself to focus on the event but it was such a bore and I found myself zoning out, but then, I heard a very familiar voice. The same voice that haunted me at night.
“…And that’s how I survived a psychotic woman. So if I can do that all on my own, that should be enough proof that I’m more than capable of handling the business…” I looked up and watched as Ethan gave his speech, trying to act as the moral philanthropist businessman that he wasn’t, and the audience laughed in response to his lies.
My nostrils flared in anger and I clenched my fists so hard, it hurt. He was smiling widely, but soon, I’d smack it off his face.
Dominic noticed my anger so he leaned in and whispered to me with a small smile, “I know you want to hurt him, but don’t worry, darling, I’ll let you do all that and more when the time comes.”
He finished off his speech and the audience cheered loudly. He was likeable, that’s for sure and it’d make it difficult for everyone to see him for who he truly is.
I didn’t know how I managed to sit still until the event was over. I kept my eyes on Ethan who was yet to see me but Dominic suddenly stood beside our table, blocking my view, and just when I was about to protest, I saw Ethan walking towards us.
My heart raced with anger and hatred but I managed to sit still. “Mr Hayes, it’s good to see you here,” I heard Ethan say and I could hear the smile in his voice, “but you shouldn’t have come since it’s obvious you won’t win. I mean, they need a family man and you aren’t married, let alone have a child.”
Dominic chuckled slowly, “Forgive my manners, Mr Koleman. Let me introduce you to my wife,” Dominic turned back, stretching his hand to me and I took it, smiling softly. “This is my wife, Sophie Hayes,” Dominic wrapped his arms around my waist and pulled me closer.
Ethan’s eyes were as wide as saucers. He blinked rapidly and his confident smile faltered so hard that he couldn’t quickly regain composure and I suppressed the urge to laugh. “Hello, Mr Koleman.” I greeted him casually.
PROLOGUEDOMINIC“I can be obsessive about my interests.” That was my reply to the therapist’s question about myself. She lifted her eyes from the notepad, intrigued but careful. “Obsessive?”I nodded.“Alcohol?”I slowly shook my head with a small smirk on my lips.“Drugs?”It would’ve been easier if it were drugs. At least addiction to substances could be cured.“Women?”Woman, I corrected in my head.I didn’t answer. I didn’t need to. The smirk on my lips told her everything she needed to know. Her eyes flickered to my mouth before she caught herself and swallowed hard. Interesting. She was trying too hard to maintain her composure.I was used to that and that’s why she intrigued me. She blatantly rejected my advances, when I could have given her everything she wanted and more.“Do you often give in to whatever it is that you want?” she asked and turned back to her notepad, ready to write. Not really. Wanting something and having it were two different things. There was no fun in ea
CHAPTER ONESOPHIEI caught my husband cheating on me and he sent me to jail for it!Ethan and I had been married for five and we were head over heels in love with each other. “Don’t stay up waiting for me, I’ll be working late.” He said before he left for work that morning. He left so early that he didn’t have breakfast that I prepared for him. He had been leaving early and missing breakfasts so, I decided to surprise him with lunch. But when I got to his office, I was the one who was surprised.“Oh my god, Ethan faster!” A woman’s loud and unhinged moans echoed in my head.Ethan had his pants down and he was humping his secretary, Stella, like a dog in heat. And Stella, had her skirt around her waist and she was on his desk, in his office!“W..what is going on here?!” My voice was shaky as I tried to process everything that was happening right in front of my eyes even as my heart was racing rapidly and my vision was getting blurry due to the tears that had gathered in my eyes.“Soph
CHAPTER TWOSOPHIEThere was blood everywhere, on my hands, my face, and even on my clothes. I touched my arms, and my stomach but there was no pain, no wound on my body. Then whose blood is this?It was warm and sticky, and it sent shivers down my spine. My throat felt tight and breathing became difficult as I looked down at Ethan, and realized that the knife was buried deep in his chest. His white shirt was turning red, and the blood was quickly spreading out.I blinked rapidly. No. No, no, no. This isn’t happening.Ethan coughed, and he managed to smirk despite the pain. My heart pounded in my chest. I wanted to help him, and press my hands over the wound to stop the bleeding, but my body wouldn’t move. I was in so much shock. Then suddenly, a loud scream filled the air.“Help!” Stella screamed and her voice was filled with fear and terror. “Someone help! Mr. Ethan’s wife is trying to murder him!”I quickly turned toward her and saw that she was at the office door, banging her fist
CHAPTER THREESOPHIEI walked into the visiting room, my heart pounding. There were several people in there but the guard led me to a private booth. The place was dark and empty, leaving me on the edge, and my fear and confusion knew no bounds.“Hello, Sophie,” I heard a deep voice say and my whole body trembled in fear.“W..who are you?” I asked in a shaky voice. I had no idea why someone had come to see me now, after all this time. As if on cue, the booth light was turned on and it revealed who the visitor was. The man that sat opposite me was the most handsome man I had ever seen, but there was something unsettling about his beauty, and it made me want to stay away from him.But then, I frowned. I knew him, not personally though, but we had crossed paths.“You!” I gasped as I vividly remembered him.“I’m glad you remember me. So I don’t have to go through the hassle of introducing myself,” he smiled widely and leaned back in his seat. He furrowed his brows, and his intense haze ma
CHAPTER FOURSOPHIE“Hey, get up!” The guard’s harsh voice startled me and made me jerk awake. My whole body ached badly from the hard mattress, and my mind hadn’t been at peace since Dominic left. It felt like I had made a big mistake and thrown away my chances of getting back at Ethan.I sat up slowly and massaged my temples to ease my headache, “What is it?” I muttered. The guard didn’t respond, he just pointed for me to follow him. I took a deep breath as I followed him out, and my heart raced, “Is anyone here to see me?” I asked expectantly, but he didn’t answer me. He just kept walking and I had no choice but to follow him. When he reached the locker room, he unlocked a cabinet and took out all my old belongings and pushed it into my hands, “You’re free to go!”I blinked, “What?!” I asked him to clarify because it felt like I hadn’t heard him properly.“You heard me. You’re being released. Now take your stuff and get moving.” He said with a frown. Before I could stop myself, I
