CHAPTER FOUR
SOPHIE
“Hey, get up!”
The guard’s harsh voice startled me and made me jerk awake. My whole body ached badly from the hard mattress, and my mind hadn’t been at peace since Dominic left. It felt like I had made a big mistake and thrown away my chances of getting back at Ethan.
I sat up slowly and massaged my temples to ease my headache, “What is it?” I muttered.
The guard didn’t respond, he just pointed for me to follow him. I took a deep breath as I followed him out, and my heart raced, “Is anyone here to see me?” I asked expectantly, but he didn’t answer me.
He just kept walking and I had no choice but to follow him. When he reached the locker room, he unlocked a cabinet and took out all my old belongings and pushed it into my hands, “You’re free to go!”
I blinked, “What?!” I asked him to clarify because it felt like I hadn’t heard him properly.
“You heard me. You’re being released. Now take your stuff and get moving.” He said with a frown.
Before I could stop myself, I gasped out, both in shock and relief. My heart pounded as I stared at him in shock. “Are you serious?”
He just nodded.
My hands shook as I held my old clothes. This had to be a mistake. I still had some more years to go, how could I just be let go?
Was this Ethan’s doing? No, I shook my head. He would never. He was a terrible person.
Maybe they revisited the case and realized that I was innocent? Maybe, someone out there still believed in me? But deep down, I knew the truth. This was Dominic’s doing. He didn’t look like a man that’d give up easily.
I tried to brush off the thoughts of him and focus on the bright side as the guard led me out. I could her the murmurs from the inmates as they weren’t happy with my early release, but I ignored them.
And just as I stepped outside the prison’s gate, and took a deep breath of the fresh air, I spotted a sleek black car, parked nearby.
My heart dropped as I realized who it was. I tried to ignore him and walk in the opposite direction but a man alighted from the vehicle and rushed towards me. “Miss,” he called, and I fastened my pace.
“Miss!” He blocked my path.
“Leave me alone!” I warned him seriously, but he stubbornly shook his head.
“I’m sorry but I can’t.” He lowered his head, “The boss asked to see you.”
“Tell your boss that I don’t want to see him,” I lifted my chin in defiance but the man simply smiled like that was an impossible thing to do. It wasn’t like I didn’t want to see Dominic, I was just scared.
After a while of back and forth, I finally, but grudgingly agreed to see his boss. The plan was to shun him for good.
But when I got into the car, Dominic greeted me with a smile, “it’s good to see you out here. The prison doesn’t do you justice.”
“I know you’re the one who orchestrated my early release,” I said seriously.
“Oh, I see that you figured that out” His smile widened. “It’s unfortunate, I tried to be discreet.”
“Dominic,” I called his attention, and forced myself to sound more serious, “Why are you doing this?”
He sighed, “I’ve already told you. You need my help and I need yours.”
“What if I don’t want to do it?” I asked the question that had been on my mind, “will you send me back to jail, then?”
He smiled dangerously like he’d do that and more if I refused, but he ignored the question. “Let me show you something.” He took out his phone, placed it on my lap and pressed play.
“Ethan Koleman announces engagement to Stella Donovan.” The reporter's voice rang out in the quiet car. “He has finally moved on from his psychotic ex wife…”
Everything blurred as I stared at the phone. Four years later and Ethan was still parading me as a mentally unstable woman.
“Join hands with me and we’ll take him down together.” I heard Dominic’s quiet and persuasive voice beside me. “The world is a cruel place for ex-convicts. I’ll give you everything you need. A home, a job and a life.”
I barely heard him as all that I could think of was Ethan’s engagement. He sent me to jail to suffer for a crime that I didn’t commit, yet he had the audacity to crave for a happily ever life?
Dominic leaned in and whispered, “This is your chance to clear your name and make things right.” He said, and that was enough to make me change my mind.
This man was the devil. He knew how to play his games, and despite my promise to stay away from him, I found myself giving in.
I took a deep breath, “I’ll do it. I’ll marry you.” I said seriously.
“That’s what I’m talking about!” Dominic’s smile widened, “I’m glad you’ve come back to your senses.”
CHAPTER FIVESOPHIEOne moment we were in the car and the next, we were at the registry. I glance down at the thick certificate in my hands, feeling lost.“Even if you regret it, there’s no going back now,” Dominic’s deep voice pulled me out of my thoughts and he had a sly smile on his face.“I don’t,” I shot him a glare and glanced down at the certificate again before putting it in my bag. “And you can’t tell me what to do!”Dominic didn’t say anything but the way he smirked told me that he could and he planned on doing so.Just as expected, Dominic went over the rules of our marriage and made me sign a lot of contracts. That alone made me wonder what I had gotten myself into. “Our marriage is only for the public. Don’t get the wrong idea. I can never love you, I don’t do love,” He said.I rolled my eyes at him, “I’d rather stick my head in a tank of water filled with electric eels than fall in love with you.” I shot back at him and he received it with a small, knowing smirk. After
PROLOGUEDOMINIC“I can be obsessive about my interests.” That was my reply to the therapist’s question about myself. She lifted her eyes from the notepad, intrigued but careful. “Obsessive?”I nodded.“Alcohol?”I slowly shook my head with a small smirk on my lips.“Drugs?”It would’ve been easier if it were drugs. At least addiction to substances could be cured.“Women?”Woman, I corrected in my head.I didn’t answer. I didn’t need to. The smirk on my lips told her everything she needed to know. Her eyes flickered to my mouth before she caught herself and swallowed hard. Interesting. She was trying too hard to maintain her composure.I was used to that and that’s why she intrigued me. She blatantly rejected my advances, when I could have given her everything she wanted and more.“Do you often give in to whatever it is that you want?” she asked and turned back to her notepad, ready to write. Not really. Wanting something and having it were two different things. There was no fun in ea
CHAPTER ONESOPHIEI caught my husband cheating on me and he sent me to jail for it!Ethan and I had been married for five and we were head over heels in love with each other. “Don’t stay up waiting for me, I’ll be working late.” He said before he left for work that morning. He left so early that he didn’t have breakfast that I prepared for him. He had been leaving early and missing breakfasts so, I decided to surprise him with lunch. But when I got to his office, I was the one who was surprised.“Oh my god, Ethan faster!” A woman’s loud and unhinged moans echoed in my head.Ethan had his pants down and he was humping his secretary, Stella, like a dog in heat. And Stella, had her skirt around her waist and she was on his desk, in his office!“W..what is going on here?!” My voice was shaky as I tried to process everything that was happening right in front of my eyes even as my heart was racing rapidly and my vision was getting blurry due to the tears that had gathered in my eyes.“Soph
CHAPTER TWOSOPHIEThere was blood everywhere, on my hands, my face, and even on my clothes. I touched my arms, and my stomach but there was no pain, no wound on my body. Then whose blood is this?It was warm and sticky, and it sent shivers down my spine. My throat felt tight and breathing became difficult as I looked down at Ethan, and realized that the knife was buried deep in his chest. His white shirt was turning red, and the blood was quickly spreading out.I blinked rapidly. No. No, no, no. This isn’t happening.Ethan coughed, and he managed to smirk despite the pain. My heart pounded in my chest. I wanted to help him, and press my hands over the wound to stop the bleeding, but my body wouldn’t move. I was in so much shock. Then suddenly, a loud scream filled the air.“Help!” Stella screamed and her voice was filled with fear and terror. “Someone help! Mr. Ethan’s wife is trying to murder him!”I quickly turned toward her and saw that she was at the office door, banging her fist
CHAPTER THREESOPHIEI walked into the visiting room, my heart pounding. There were several people in there but the guard led me to a private booth. The place was dark and empty, leaving me on the edge, and my fear and confusion knew no bounds.“Hello, Sophie,” I heard a deep voice say and my whole body trembled in fear.“W..who are you?” I asked in a shaky voice. I had no idea why someone had come to see me now, after all this time. As if on cue, the booth light was turned on and it revealed who the visitor was. The man that sat opposite me was the most handsome man I had ever seen, but there was something unsettling about his beauty, and it made me want to stay away from him.But then, I frowned. I knew him, not personally though, but we had crossed paths.“You!” I gasped as I vividly remembered him.“I’m glad you remember me. So I don’t have to go through the hassle of introducing myself,” he smiled widely and leaned back in his seat. He furrowed his brows, and his intense haze ma
