LUKAN
" Oh, I'm so sorry." Rosita said quickly, composing herself and looking kind of embarrassed." I was kind of lost in thought."
" Fine if you say so." I replied, not wanting to push it, but I knew I saw a kind of recognition in her eyes.
I was staring at Merida, it was now that I looked at her. She was probably thinner and looking frail than before, and she was always trying to avoid my gaze.
"You have to take her measurement Rosita for her new dresses."
" Yes, Alpha Lukan," Rosita replied and proceeded to take Merida's measurement, who was looking kind of frightened. I peered at her, and it seemed there were a lot of things she wanted to say.
"What is it, Merida? Speak."
Merida shook her head.
"No, it's nothing."
I stared at her for a while, living with her aunt and uncle must have molded her into someone who is silently headstrong and stubborn.
"If you have something to say, then spill it out, don't get me angry. As my mate, you should learn to be outspoken, and also I will mark you soon during the Mating Ritual."
Merida's eyes immediately flew wide open." Mate." She stuttered and her lips kind of quivered.
" Yes." I replied, looking at her frightened face." Do you have any problem with that?"
With the way she was staring at me, I knew that something was wrong. I guess all this had happened suddenly, and she knew nothing about most of the arrangements.
"I think there's a lot of explaining I have to do." I said, pushing my hands deep into my pockets." I didn't buy you because I wanted you to be my slave or breeder, I bought you because I want to mark you and make you mine."
The last statement made her eyes almost fall out of their sockets, even Rosita raised her head quickly in shock.
"Your aunt and uncle are so daft. I'm quite sure that they really didn't read the contract back to back."
But she wasn't listening to all I was saying, her quivering lips parted.
" Why me?" Merida said, swallowing hard." I'm not good for you. I killed my parents. I might repeat the same mistake."
Instead of giving her a reply, I looked out of the window.
Rosita was trying to make her stand still so she could take a proper measurement and from the corner of my eyes I saw Merida wince.
" Why is this place so sticky?" Rosita asked, pointing at a place beside her lower back.
Merida glanced at me and then at Rosita and back again.
"It's- it's an injury."
" Any injury?" I asked and Rosita glanced at me." I think there's a bloodstain there, it must be really big for it not to heal properly."
Again Merida stared down at her feet.
" Come here and show me." I said in a low, commanding tone.
" Don't be stupid. You are not at Frostclaw Pack, don't force me to strip you here."
Merida's eyes flew wide open at my sentence, and she cowered in fear.
She glanced at Rosita and then back at me.
"Can I use the bathroom please?"
I turned to Rosita." Leave us."
Rosita bowed before leaving the room, shutting the door calmly behind her.
Merida's blood scent was so strong, it floated into my nostrils, making my head spin.
Calmly and with shaky hands, she turned around and pulled down her dress, and it fell to her lower back.
" It's fine." She said." It's just a little injury."
" Indeed," I sneered."how do you know it's fine, and it is just a little injury, when you can't even look at your back." I growled, and she flinched before trying to pull the dress up. I held her hands, stopping her.
" Are there any more bruises ?" I asked, and she shook her head slowly, but I didn't believe her, and before she could say a word, I ripped the gown off her and a silent gasp escaped her lips.
My eyes fell on her underwear that were barely hugging her small, frail,,.
She was so thin and bony and the bones at her hips were sticking out.
They weren't just a single bruise like she claimed, it seemed she was bathed in a thousand bruises, some of which were ready to turn purple and they looked so painful.
Mad anger danced within me and I felt like tearing whoever did this apart.
" Who did this to you?" I asked, hoping she would give me some piece of information, but she said nothing.
" Is it Ophelia?"
She shook her head, staring at her small feet.
" Or is it that fool called Garrick?"
She shook her head before answering me.
"They weren't the only ones. The whole pack hates me."
I cursed under my breath and ran my hand through my hair.
"They are so dead." I yelled." How would they do this to you?"
Then my eyes fell on her wrist, which had bruises on them, it was as if she was bound so tight, and it had left an indelible mark there.
"They also did this too, right?"
As usual, her tongue was tied, and she couldn't give me an answer as she wore her dress which could barely cover her properly.
" You must see a physician."
" No issues, but you don't have to bother."
" I insist, don't tell me you are fine and not to bother." I thundered." Say that one more time and I will take you to Frostclaw Pack." I threatened, but I knew I couldn't do that.
She stared at me shocked.
" Can't you see that you are hurt and going through pain? Look at your body. You are my mate now, and you are my responsibility. Is that understood?"
I didn't realize that I had been yelling. This was the first time I was feeling so concerned about someone. No woman had touched my heart this way.
Merida was star
ing at me, surprised too, and I kind of felt embarrassed.
I exhaled and looked away. I just hope I'm not falling for her.
" I will have to find out about the Nightshade fern," I said instead.
MERIDA"I don't know anything about the Nightshade fern,"I said in a very small voice hesitantly. He was staring at me now, and I could see a glint of concern in his eyes. The way he had shouted minutes ago proved just one thing. It meant that he cared about me.This was the first time anyone was going to show me so much care. " I thought you knew the difference between both flowers, though they kind of look alike."" I- I don't know," I stammered. He exhaled." But your aunt and uncle said you knew the difference, like I explained before, the Nightshade fern is of two types. The first is extinct and the one they said you added to your parents' drink is very difficult to find. But I know that something about the story isn't adding up."I glanced up at him as he continued."Your fingers are supposed to be stained if indeed you pluck one of the flowers."" Oh." That was the only thing I could say. " I will make them pay for making you suffer." He said to me and walked through the wind
LUKAN"What do you mean by her injuries won't heal easily."I said bursting into the room and from the corner of my eyes I could see Merida flinched. My fist rolled into a ball by my sides and my eyes were blazing. I was so angry that I was even surprised. This was the kind of anger that came because one cared so much about someone.I shook my head , I was only doing it because I felt pity towards her, I said to myself.Julietta's head shot up quickly and she gave me a sidelong look which I recognized immediately and turned away. I knew something terrible was going on."You will have to apply the Willows Tears on the injury." She said in a very small voice her eyes fixed on mine as she walked to her desk." Come Merida, let me take you upstairs." I said, taking her hand .Upstairs in our bedroom ,I made her lift her shirt up and unscrewed the small bottle , the greenish paste-like substance stared back at me, it had no smell .I scoped just a little amount and placed it on the injury
CHAPTER 7MERIDAI watched him as he walked out of the room with an air of a nonchalant attitude around him. He was the Alpha so what was I even expecting from him. Rosita felt hurt by his words but I guess she was already used to it. I felt so small that I wanted to sink. I never expected him to speak that way. Well he was funny actually for me to get along with him I have to do my very best not to get him angry. I was still staring at the door when Rosita called my attention. "Do you want me to escort you to the dinning?"she asked and I blinked several times to understand what she was saying. Back home at Frostclaw pack, no one escorted me anywhere except when I was about to be given some lashes. I could count how many times I ate in a week.she must have seen how surprised and flushed my cheeks were and she smiled at me. "I can show you to the dining room if you don't want me to go with you." Rosita said again in a very small voice.I struggled to my feet and managed a smile
MERIDAIt was the singing of the birds and the harsh sun rays that woke me up.I couldn't even remember how long I had slept or when I had slept off. I stirred , turning to the other side of the bed suddenly feeling so cold .I grabbed the duvet and pulled it over my head , trying to go back to sleep. My stomach rumbled , reminding me how little I had eaten last night and I almost cried out, the hunger that was chewing at the other side of my stomach grew more teeth and increased its tempo.Just then I suddenly sat quickly as if pricked by a needle I broke out in cold sweat. Aunt Ophelia....I said to myself , my eyes darted around the room and for a moment I forgot that I was no longer in Frostclaw pack.I was somewhere , safe somewhere where no harm could get to me and where I could no longer be reminded of how unworthy and useless I was.I slapped my temple softly and exhaled in relief."You are up so early."I heard a voice say and I quickly turned to find Alpha Lukan standing b
LUKANThe car gilded slowly before it stopped in the parking lot, I glanced at my watch and realized I was fifteen minutes late."If they can't wait they can go home." I muttered to myself as I took the steps up to my office."Good morning sir." My receptionist greeted me with a low bow , I gave no reply and walked away when I saw my PA but I pretended not to see her . She came out of an office smiling sheepishly obviously engaged in a gossip." Good morning Alpha Lukan." She said half running after me and trying to keep up with my long strides."I sent you two emails and you never gave a reply, " I said, taking another bend."I did , but I was waiting to congratulate you." She said in a rasped breath and I stopped in my tracks."Congratulate me for what?" I asked lines of anger etched on my
LUKANI stood staring down at the pack below, one hand thrust into my pocket and the other holding a tumbler. My mind was far away and it went back to the discussion I had with my mother , Julietta .I took another sip , savoring the taste , the cold liquid ran down my throat , warming itThinking about Merida , I felt there was so much I needed to know about her.It seems she was a shadow , like she just wasn't existing and when I turned away she might just vanish.I exhaled and poured myself another glass of vodka .I guess they were still a lot of things that I just didn't know about her , it seems there were many things I might never know about her"Why does it seem like mother knows so much about her ?" I muttered to myself taking another sip.The
MERIDAI still couldn't believe he could do such a thing to me even when he left , I was still feeling embarrassed. My stomach rumbled again and with the little strength I had left , I pushed the door open , my eyes meeting the spiral staircase which made my eyes water.I took a step at a time and the smell of freshly brewed coffee flew into my nose making me salivate. I told myself this morning that I could stuff myself with just enough food .As I came to the dining hall I momentarily forgot about Alpha Lukan and I wanted to grab every piece of fried chicken that was on the table. There were dessert and appetizers , coffee and toast , just anything to make one go crazy.Back home I never had any of this and I wanted to start eating right away. I was still in last night's clothes and I really wanted something to eat. I knew I was supposed to have showered before having breakfast , but I was about to faint from the hunger that was crawling at the sides of my stomach. "Merida."I hear
MERIDA I blinked , the sun on my face and I squinted. My leg sting from the pain which drove through meLemuel stood awkwardly beside me, he glanced at an angry Lukan and then back to me, as though unsure whether to help me up or not. "Lukan!" I gasped, my voice cracking , this was the first time I was calling him by his name.He stood there, staring down at us, his eyes narrowed, his jaw clenched. There was something funny in the way he looked at Lemuel, as if the very idea of us together made him angry.I tried to scramble to my feet, but my leg throbbed, and I winced, I stayed put. “I... I tripped,” I stammered, trying to explain. “It was an accident.” Lemuel quickly nodded, his face pale. His cheeks flushed “Yeah, she fell. I was just—”“Just what ?" Lukan's voice was cold and low.He didn’t seem interested in Lemuel’s explanation, nor mine. The way he looked between the two of us, there was something else swirling in his mind—something I didn't think was possible. Jealo
