"Boss, the suspect is dead!"
"Dead!?" Wade quickly rushed to the interrogation room where a doctor tried to perform an emergency rescue.
"An ambulance is on the way!" A female officer shouted from behind.
Everyone was panicking, doing their best to save the suspect. However, after two minutes, the doctor sighed and shook his head at them. The doctor wiped his sweat and said, "Looks like he died of a heart attack. I'm sorry, Wade,"
"A heart attack? How did this happen?! Aren't you all on watch!?" Wade turned to the cops who were on duty, furious.
The young cops swallowed and glanced at the floor wordlessly.
"Chief, our rescue response was very fast. Doctor Howard was here within seconds yet he couldn't save the suspect," Mark tried to intercede for the young cops. He motioned for them to retreat.
Whenever the chief was angry, the whole room would be swept into a glacier, cold and scary.
"I'm not angry over that. Our lead have been cut off again!" Wade was close to gnashing his teeth.
The other cops all looked sorry and anxious. They all knew how important this lead was to him. Not only that, Edward Mattson owned a lot of companies and factories. If word gets out that he was missing, the city would be plunged into chaos, workers might go on strike, business rivals might use this opportunity to take advantage of the people.
"Never mind," Wade sighed, casting a final look at the dead suspect and strode away.
Later in the day, the chief was seen in a coffee shop, scrolling through his phone.
Doctor Howard had sent the medical record of the suspect to him via email.
"No history of any heart diseases, doesn't drink alcohol, haven't taken any drugs. A perfectly healthy lifestyle. Sigh...." Wade said..
"Chief, are you suspecting that he was...." Greg, a young rookie cop asked.
"He was killed, probably silenced,"
A few minutes later, Doctor Howard sent another email stating that the suspect died of poisoning.
"This type of poison is banned here. It can only be found in Castello," Doctor Howard wrote in the email.
Wade was silent for a while, his expression frightening the young cop in front of him.
"Chief?" Greg asked. He thought the chief was angry again. Mark came and joined them, plopping himself beside Greg.
"Boss, are you daydreaming about something?" Mark waved his hand in front of Wade. But there was no response. Instead, Wade's mind seemed to be in a distant place.
But suddenly, Wade snapped back to reality and exclaimed, "We're going to Castello!"
"Ahh!" Mark held his chest and looked at Wade with an aggrieved look. "You scared me just now! Are you crazy?! Do you know what kind of place Castello is? Don't you want to live!?" Mark almost spat out his drink when Wade mentioned the place.
"Is Castello that dangerous?" Wade was calm despite hearing rumors about this place. His deep eyes glanced at Mark nonchalantly.
Wade suddenly remembered a detail from a file about the dead suspect's actions. The last place the suspect visited was a nightclub in Castello.
"The doctor confirmed that the suspect was poisoned a long time ago. The source of the poison comes from an illegal pharmacy in Castello. I need to go there, tonight, " Wade was determined.
Whenever the chief was determined, no one could stop him from achieving his goals. Not especially since this case involves his father. Mark sighed.
"I'll go with you,"
"I'll go... t..too!" Greg raised his hand.
"You better not go, in case you might drag us down," Mark shot Greg a stern look.
"Castello," Wade sounded the name of the place, listening to how it rolls off his tongue.
"What are all of you afraid of?"
"Chief, that place is where the most dangerous Mafia and his men lurk, where crime is an everyday thing! We, as police, have no idea what we will face when we enter," Mark cried.
"So you ignored the place and let criminals take over?" Wade shot him a look.
"That's not really the case. You see, there's this man that everyone doesn't dare to offend and.... Castello belongs to him, it's under his control. Whoever pisses him off will die terribly," when Mark mentioned this man, Wade could sense the fear in his voice.
"Is he so scary?" Wade looked skeptical.
"Oh, chief. I suggest you don't play the fool with him!" Greg saw that look on Wade's face and knew that he might try to find fault with the Mafia.
"I have heard things about him. They said that he likes to skin people alive, eat human flesh, boil their bones, and kidnap young men! I heard the rumors that this Mafia Lord fancies handsome men and women! He might be a bisexual monster! He looks very ugly, with a twisted face and a crooked nose. He has many men under him, controlling many arms dealers and gangs!" Greg's lips quivered as he spoke.
At this point, Wade did feel goosebumps crawling up his skin. "That scary? Isn't it a little too exaggerated?" He raised an eyebrow.
"Chief, are you serious?!" Mark and Greg cried at the same time. It seems like they can never convince him not to go there...
Midnight, Castello nightclub.
Disco lights danced across the place, music blared loudly, bodies pressed together, girls dressed skimpily as they clung intimately onto their partners.
To get to Castello without being noticed, Wade had to dress up and put on a disguise. Mark followed him, wearing a false beard.
"I thought we were going to the pharmacy?" Mark whispered.
"Let's have a drink first," Wade replied cheerfully.
What? Mark wondered what his chief was up to. Although they entered the police academy at the same time, he could never match with Wade's level. No wonder he became the police chief after a short five years.
From up above, a pair of dark eyes landed on Wade and Mark.
"The cops are here, especially the one I wanted the most," a dark figure on the highest floor of the nightclub licked his lips.
Somehow, Wade felt like his actions were being watched. He looked around, scanning the nightclub but couldn't find anything. No one dares to walk into Castello like it was a supermarket. Castello was where crime and murder were a common thing. You could never know what tomorrow brings.Even the FBI didn't dare to do anything against the Mafia. Ever since Wade took office, he had dedicated all his time to wiping out criminals.Maybe he was overthinking. As soon as he stepped into the nightclub, there was a strange uneasy feeling in his chest. Mark struck up a conversation with a girl and they began talking happily. The real reason Wade wanted to come here was because he was looking for someone. The previous chief had gave him information that they had a spy in Castello whom he could contact to help find Edward Mattson. The spy had sent an anonymous text message to meet him in this nightclub. Wade figured that it would be better to meet with this spy than go straight to the pharmacy.
"Uh…." Wade was speechless. Was this guy flirting with him?Mark came to his side and nudged Wade from behind, reminding him of their mission. "Thank you for saving my friend. We need to go. It's very late," Mark made up an excuse and tried to signal to Wade with his eyes. Something was wrong. Wade took heed of it and thanked the man again before heading to the door. "You're welcome. Come back again next time. What's your name?" The man asked, his eyes scanning Wade up and down lazily. "Wade," "Wade…." The way his name sounded off this mysterious man's lips sent a tingle up Wade's body. "Nice name. I could say it all day," the man chuckled, his dark eyes gazing at him intensely.Wade laughed awkwardly. No one had ever said such a thing to him. This man was probably just fooling around with him. Once they were out, Wade asked Mark about his findings. "The whole bar is creeping with crazy criminals. We were lucky we didn't get killed! That cute girl said she saw Edward Mattson f
"Ahhh! Who the hell are yo-" Wade jumped in fright. But when he saw the person who said it, he calmed down. When he saw the man looking at him with a smug expression, Wade quickly made an excuse. "I'm lost. S…so I'm looking for the exit,""Didn't you leave here hours ago? Why are you back again… ?" The man closed in on Wade, pausing in his sentence to scan Wade's clothing. "In a waiter's uniform?"Wade knew that his excuse has failed. What was he going to say? Was his identity blown? "Missed me that much?" The mysterious man smirked. "I..I..," Wade stuttered. With the way the man was looking at him, it looked as if he wanted to eat Wade up. "Why don't you guess what's my purpose here?" Wade decided to play it smart. From the looks of it, the mysterious man wasn't a simple person either. He could enter the highest floor of the nightclub and mingle with people like John Brandon, Wade began to suspect his identity. "Oh, let me guess then. Is there a prize if I guess it correctly?"
"My name is Vincenzo Luciano,"Luciano??!! T..that Luciano??!! He was actually the world's….Wade felt goosebumps crawling up his skin. Vincenzo Luciano, the world's most powerful and wanted criminal, the enigmatic Mafia King, the one who has many gangs working under him, the one whom the FBI and Interpol don't dare to touch, that Vincenzo Luciano?Double shit! Wade only knew one thing at this moment. He was screwed! In his head, Wade was cursing himself for being stupid and clumsy. How could he not know that was Vincenzo Luciano?! This Luciano guy was the one the previous police chief and FBI had been trying to catch. So this was the big criminal that everyone failed to catch? If he could catch him and put him behind bars, then at least half the world would be rid of crime. The man laughed, amusement in his dark eyes. "Officer, you have fallen into my trap. Whatcha gonna do?" Vincenzo continue to let his fingers trailed down Wade's back.Wade shivered, his stomach squeezing on it
Wade crouched behind a wall, a gun strapped to his side. He looked opposite to where his friend and assistant, Mark was and motioned for him to follow him. "Are you sure this is the correct place? I hope we don't get our brains blasted off," Mark grumbled while loading bullets into his gun."What are you talking about? We have the advantage of sneak attack here," Wade said rather arrogantly."Your fighting skills are better than mine. No wonder you can boast," Mark replied matter of factly.Wade ushered Mark and two more men dressed in police uniforms to follow him into the building. Within seconds, gunshots were fired, bullets whizzed through the air in a deadly fight. The air smelt of gunpowder and the metallic scent of blood was noticeable. In the dark night, the place was eerily quiet except for a nightclub that was blaring lights and music in the distance. Wade would have much preferred to put his feet up by the fireplace and munch on a bag of Lays but unfortunately, somethin
