Under the blazing sun, a young man sat on the curb. His name was Elijah Ludwig.

His dashing good looks and flawless skin stood out in stark contrast with his attire—a wide-brimmed straw hat, shabby clothes, and a pair of worn boots.

He was flipping through a stack of marriage agreements that looked faded with age, and the grumbles that escaped him made the surrounding passersby cast strange glances his way.

"What's wrong with that old fogey anyway? Why did he hand me nine marriage agreements upon my return to civilization? Does he expect me to marry nine wives?

"Jasperia… Surrence… the Southeastern Military Command region… and even Summiton as well? These places are all over the country! I only have a few bucks on me. I can't possibly travel to all these cities on foot!"

Elijah stared up at the sky and sighed, continuing, "How long will it take me to break off all these marriage agreements? Should I borrow some money from my nearest fiancée to cover the travel expenses first? The closest one is… Ciara Ludwig from Ashford?"

A strange look appeared on Elijah's face.

Meanwhile, after hearing what Elijah said, the commuters waiting around for the bus nearby tossed him questioning, scornful looks.

A respectably dressed, bespectacled man gave Elijah a thumbs-up as he remarked, "Hey, man. You sure know how to come up with tall tales. You're quite the expert, in fact!"

On the other hand, some people looked furious.

As it was, Ciara was famous in Ashford, a small city that neighbored the border of Summiton, the state capital. She was known for being a genius doctor in the city. Everyone called her a saint.

None of the young folks in Ashford dared to show Ciara any disrespect, even though some of them indulged in fanciful dreams about her, too.

And yet, Elijah had just claimed he wanted to break off a marriage agreement with Ciara. Moreover, he said he had eight other marriage agreements to break off, too!

The crowd couldn't believe that Elijah called himself Ciara's fiancé. He was dressed in an unkempt manner, and his boots were caked with dirt. Evidently, he was some kind of country bumpkin who came into the city to look for a job!

Rolling his eyes, Elijah scoffed at the onlookers. He couldn't be bothered to deal with their ignorance.

With a shake of his head, he continued leafing through the stack of marriage agreements and grumbled, "Who else… Charlotte Adler, the famed war hero of the Southeastern Military Command? Marissa Sutton, Hannah Sherman, and Sylvia Carter, known as the Three Beauties of Jasperia?"

Elijah scratched his head, feeling a headache coming on. "Oh. Here's another one that's nearby—Lynette Gray from Ashford.

"Did the old fogey make some kind of mistake? How can all these women have marriage agreements with me? All those heirs of privileged and influential families would go nuts if they heard about this."

The crowd couldn't take any more of Elijah's boastful statements.

A stout-looking man got up and roared, "Hey! Are you done yet? Watch it, or one of these days, your deluded bragging will come back to bite you in the ass! Do you even know who Lynette Gray is in Ashford?"

Everyone eyed Elijah as though he was a fool.

Lynette was the daughter of Thomas Gray, the richest man in Ashford. Unlike the Ludwigs, the Grays wielded great power in the city.

It was said that the family descended from the Grays of Langton, a historically significant family. The family was wealthy beyond imagination, and Lynette was considered a genius. Thomas had already put her in charge of the Gray family's business and assets.

Despite only being 26 years old, she was already the CEO of over 30 publicly traded companies owned by the Grays. It wouldn't be remiss to consider her the top heiress in all of Ashford.

Therefore, how could the crowd accept that Elijah was even fantasizing about being involved with Lynette? He even said she was one of his multiple fiancées!

Elijah shook his head. After all, ignorance limited a person's perspective. He didn't need to pay any attention to these foolish people. He rolled up the marriage agreements and stuffed them into his bag before making his way off.

The first order of business for him was to head over to the Ludwig family and look for Ciara.

Two young women were sitting at the bus stop, and one of them, Wendy Newell, couldn't hold back her laughter anymore.

In a melodious voice, Wendy muttered, "Did you hear that? You have a fiancé!"

She elbowed Lynette, the fair, brunette young woman beside her whose serious expression was partly hidden by the sunglasses she wore. Nevertheless, her captivating features and commanding presence couldn't be ignored.

It was quite a sight to see two remarkably attractive young women sitting at the otherwise nondescript bus stop.

Lynette remained expressionless as she ignored Wendy. She kept her eyes fixed on the road so that she could board the bus as soon as it arrived.

Ashford was filled with young, boastful men who harbored deluded ideas about her. She couldn't care less about their antics.

"It's so freaking hot out! It's all your fault. Why did you insist on experiencing what it's like for regular office workers to commute to and from work?

"If this keeps up, I'm going to get a heatstroke!" Wendy bemoaned as she undid one of her blouse buttons, revealing her collarbones. Her skin was dotted with sweat.

"I already miss the air conditioning in the sports car. By the way, Lyn, I heard you do have a fiancé. Is that true?"

Lynette frowned. She was told as a kid that she had a fiancé, but that felt like ancient history. Over two decades had passed, and she saw no sight of this rumored fiancé. Even the marriage agreement felt more like a piece of scrap paper.

Did that fiancé of hers truly exist?

Elijah's words left a sour taste in Lynette's mouth.

"Come. Let's go. The bus is about to arrive," Lynette said before rising to her feet. "I can't believe the bus only comes once every 30 minutes. And considering how hot it is right now, I should double the travel allowance for all the employees in the company."

As soon as she finished speaking, she was hit with a dizzy spell and instantly crumpled to the ground.

"Oh, no! Someone fainted!"

Elijah, who had only just left, turned around to look at the bus stop. The prettiest young woman he spotted earlier had suddenly fainted, while her companion seemed utterly helpless and panicked.

What a stroke of luck this was for him! He had been worried about money, and here was a chance for him to earn some.

Elijah had noticed Lynette and Wendy from the start and knew they had to come from privileged backgrounds. They were both sporting Chanel bracelets that were worth tens of thousands of dollars.

"Is anyone here a doctor?" Wendy shrieked. Kneeling beside Lynette, she was already crying in fear. "Lyn! Don't scare me like this!"

Wendy knew that if anything were to happen to Lynette, Thomas would rip her to pieces!

"I-I'm a doctor!"

A thin, slender-framed young man with gold-rimmed glasses came forward. Clutching his briefcase under his arm, he said with a slight hint of pride in his voice, "I'm a graduate student at Ashford Medical University. Let me take a look at her. She's probably suffering from a heatstroke."

There was a slight tinge of eagerness in his voice. Now was the perfect chance for him to showcase his abilities in front of two gorgeous young women.

Wendy was so agitated that she grabbed the man's hand and pleaded, "Please, help her quickly! Nothing can happen to Lyn. We'll be sure to thank you properly for your help!"

The young man swooned at the sensation of a woman grabbing his hand like that. He felt like he was floating on cloud nine.

Feeling tingly all over, he patted his chest and declared, "Rest assured, miss! I've completed a year's worth of clinical internship at a hospital. I'm a professional!"

He couldn't pass up the chance to rescue a damsel in distress! Perhaps after rescuing her, he would be blessed with a bashful display of gratitude. She might even ask for his contact details and offer to treat him to a meal.

The young man was already fantasizing about what could be. He saw the envious looks thrown his way from the crowd of onlookers. He even gulped when he stared at Lynette, who had been laid onto the bench. Her fair skin, spellbinding beauty, and sophisticated air made him drool.

Gulping once more, he stretched out a trembling hand to undo the buttons of Lynette's collar.

Just then, a roar rang out from behind, "Keep your hands off her! Leave it to me!"

Elijah shoved the bespectacled man aside before glancing at Lynette. His jaw dropped at her beauty, and he thought to himself that he would never break off his marriage agreement if he had a fiancée as breathtaking as she was."What are you doing?" snapped the man in anger. He was just about to seize his chance to be a hero, only to have a country bumpkin yank him to the side. With just a cursory look, Elijah figured out Lynette's condition, but he rambled a bunch of nonsense anyway, saying, "Relax. I spent 18 years studying medicine at Mount Quarra. I've got plenty of experience tending to cows, dogs, pigs, chickens, and other livestock. I'm a medical expert!""Hold it!" Wendy screeched. She glared at Elijah in fury as she reached out to grab his hands. She had recognized him as the guy who had been running his mouth off earlier. Cows? Dogs? Pigs? What was he? A vet?Wendy felt the vein in her forehead popping like mad. Lynette was no ordinary person! Even the top medical experts

While the young men watched on jealously, Elijah headed in. Paul Fuller, the butler, had gone ahead to inform the Ludwigs of Elijah's arrival.Standing in the courtyard, Elijah shook his head and remarked, "It's been so many years since I left this place. I can't believe even Ciara has made her name as a genius doctor."When they were children, Ciara had been a menace and often bullied Elijah. When Paul failed to return for him even after quite some time had passed, Elijah decided to take a look around. All of a sudden, he felt a painful twist in his abdomen and hastily searched for a bathroom. Upon entering one of the rooms, he looked around and confirmed there was no one inside before dashing toward the bathroom. But the moment he yanked open the door, he froze. His eyes met with another pair—they belonged to a woman. She looked to be in her early 30s, and it seemed like she had just stepped out of the shower. Carl and Ciara were stunned, especially Ciara, whose icy demeanor obviously slipped. However, Carl quickly regained his composure and let out a scoff. Elijah's words irritated him, and his eyes flashed darkly. Nevertheless, he merely picked up his cup of coffee and blew on it before remarking, "It doesn't matter whether you're breaking off the marriage agreement or rejecting it. All I hope is that you understand the situation."That being said, I am not a cold-hearted man with no regard for family. If you encounter any difficulties, feel free to seek me out.""That won't be needed." Elijah shook his head and said, "I have to head off to the next family now. I'm glad we're both on the same page about this."Carl merely chuckled in response.Seeing that Elijah was about to leave, Ciara frowned and called out, "Dad, I heard that it was Mom and Grandpa who agreed to the marriage. Won't they be displeased that we called off the marriage agreement just like that?"Scoffing once more,

Dumbstruck, everyone stared at the nylon string on the table."How impudent!" Carl snapped as he stared after Elijah's retreating figure. "Everyone makes mistakes sometimes. Even if you did get a fake, it's not your fault. The fact that he tore the painting apart just like that proves that he's the one who doesn't know how to act with propriety!"He proceeded to console Jared by saying, "Plus, looking at the painting now, it's evidently the work of a master forger. It's completely normal for you to have failed to notice it was a fake. You don't need to feel bad about it, Jared."Looking utterly red in the face, Jared jumped up from his seat and declared, "Mr. Ludwig, I'll pay top dollar to get a real one for Ciara right away!""Jared, desperate times call for desperate measures," Carl said earnestly. "The Greers are moving aggressively against us. We can't delay any longer. You and Ciara should get married as quickly as possible!"I think you two should get married within the next

"Hang on," Elijah called out. "When did I agree to treat anyone?""It makes sense that you're backing out now. Your trickery would be exposed in front of a real expert," a curt voice rang out as a young man in glasses came down from the second floor. Both Thomas and Wendy greeted him respectfully, "Dr. Larson."Even Lynette showed a look of respect when the young man appeared. Clearly, he was held in high esteem by the Grays."My name is Zachary Larson. I'm the seventh-generation successor and future heir of the Larson family. Here in Ashford, my family is renowned for having dabbled in medicine for generations. "I'm also the vice chairman of the Ashford branch of the Traditional Medicine Association, and I'm a ninth-tier practitioner of acupuncture."Slowly approaching with a faint smile, Zachary gave Elijah a cursory glance. When he spotted the straw hat and shabby clothing, his expression flashed with silent mockery.Looking away, he continued, "As they say, Mr. Thomas, ther

"Mr. Larson!"Melody and the other Ludwigs immediately reacted when they spotted Zachary. Shoving Elijah aside, they rushed up to Zachary and said in excitement, "Mr. Larson, we're from the Ludwig family, and we came here today to discuss a deal with you!"Dripping with sweat, Zachary didn't even bother to look at the Ludwigs."Get out of my way!" he snapped, leaving the Ludwigs feeling rather dumbstruck."Ms. Lynette's life is in grave danger!" Zachary cried out impatiently. "Please come with me at once, Mr. Ludwig!""Why should I come with you?" Elijah responded coolly. "That's your business. I told you not to administer that treatment, but you insisted on doing it anyway. What gives you the gall to demand that I come back with you now? I don't owe you people anything.""You…" Zachary didn't know what to say, but he panicked to find that Elijah was walking off. If he couldn't get Elijah to come back with him, he was doomed."Just what do you want?" Zachary yelled after Elijah.

"Look what you did, you jinx! This is happening because you said it would!" Wendy snapped and glared at Elijah.Lynette, who had gone pale, calmly said, "Don't get out of the car. Keep all windows and doors shut. Wendy, call my dad at once. I'll ram our way through the vans.""Don't bother, Ms. Lynette," Nate said scornfully. "I'm giving you three seconds. If you don't cooperate, I'll smash your windows. Ms. Greer sends her greetings.""I knew it was that bitch!" Wendy cried out weakly. She was so scared that she could barely speak. Tearing up from fear, she continued, "We're screwed. What should we do now? If we'd known this would happen, we should've brought the bodyguards with us!""Hold on tight. I'm going to ram through the vans now!" Lynette said with a determined expression. She switched gears and went for the accelerator.Elijah couldn't resist glancing at Lynette. He didn't expect her to be this bold."Forget it. Can't you see there are over a dozen vans surrounding us?

Frowning at Ciara, Elijah asked, "How is my having dinner here in any way related to you?""How is it not?" Ciara scoffed as she stepped forward. "Don't think I don't know what you're thinking. Although you act like you don't care, in reality, you're still hung up on this matter. You're purposely showing up wherever I go to get my attention and make your presence known, aren't you?"Frowning, Ciara continued, "Elijah, don't you find your actions too immature?""Kindly stop disturbing me while I'm having my dinner," Elijah responded."Your dinner?" Ciara repeated with a sneer. After taking in the table filled with food, she remarked, "Do you think you can afford to eat at Nyx? The food on the table would cost at least ten grand. Don't tell me you're planning to run off without paying the bill!""Oh, it's you!" Jared commented with a scoff of his own. He was still bearing a grudge over how Elijah had humiliated him the last time. His gaze was dark as he said, "I got my people to

"If you're going to be her bodyguard, what am I going to be, then?" Elijah spoke up in disgruntlement."You?" Now that we, the Fangs, have taken over the duty of protecting Ms. Lynette, you're no longer needed here."He gave the order without any regard for Elijah at all."Lyn still needs a doctor," Thomas said coolly. "You can remain by her side as her doctor. You simply needn't worry about looking out for her safety."Although Elijah had saved Lynette a few times, Thomas couldn't fully trust a random stranger from the countryside whose background he knew nothing about."Sure," Elijah responded with a nod. He couldn't be bothered to care too much anyway.Once Benedict heard that Elijah was still going to stick around, his eyes flickered with displeasure. Anyone who knew about the Fangs would be alarmed at the very mention of their name.Wendy's reaction was especially noticeable. With a look of fear and awe, she secretly observed Benedict as if she were studying a mythical creature. Even her heart was pounding wildly."The Fangs surpass even the Seabound and Lakeshore Trade Associations! How did you manage to hire someone from the Fangs, Mr. Thomas?" Wendy asked with a look of respect."Hah! The Seabound and Lakeshore Trade Associations are nothing!"Alas, Benedict scoffed at the comparison Wendy made. He let out a scornful chuckle, as though comparing the two with the Fangs was a great dishonor to him."We, the Fangs, are the real giants here. We even have our headquarters in Summiton! All of these weaklings at Ashford are nothing compared to us!"However, both Wendy and Thomas didn't feel insulted by Benedict's remarks. On the contrary, they agreed with him."The Fangs recently opened a subdivision here in Ashford, and Benedic

In response to Carl's eager question, Jared nodded and said, "That's right, Mr. Ludwig! My family staked all of our assets to get the project. In a few days, let's bring this matter to Simon and have a discussion with him."Carl's eyes lit up."I knew you were the person we could count on to go up against the Greers, Jared!" he said emphatically as he grasped Jared's hand.…Standing at an intersection in Ashford, Elijah looked a little lost. Although he lived with the Ludwigs as a child, he didn't have much of a relationship with them.He had never met his father before, and even his mother died from illness when he was very young. The only person he could consider family was his mentor, Alaric.Elijah unfurled his fist to reveal a worn emblem on his palm. Half of it had been burned off. This was the only keepsake he had left of his father."To think I would be kicked out of the family after returning from Mount Quarra," Elijah remarked with a laugh. He didn't think too much

That should be worthwhile for you, right?"His expression was stern as he continued in a threatening tone, "Don't think you can do whatever you want and cross the line just because you have something you can use against us. You got that?""Don't be too greedy!" Melody snapped resentfully, her tone mocking as well. "Not only is Uncle Carl offering to restore you to the family, but he'll even give you a job and help you find someone to marry. Don't tell me you want more. What else do you want? In fact, the Ludwigs believed they could now rank even higher than the Grays! After all, even the Grays lost to the Greers, so it meant they were weaker than the current Ludwigs."Didn't you hear what I said, Elijah?" Edgar urged impatiently in a standoffish tone that made him sound like he was doing Elijah a service."That's right! Since the family has decided to acknowledge you, you should appreciate the gesture and do as you're told!" Melody snapped in displeasure, her brows creased. "Don't tell me you intend to put on airs now. You should be grateful that you're not totally useless to the family.""Exactly!" Hamish added in contempt. "Who knows how you got lucky that you managed to prove yourself useful today? You should be thanking your lucky stars for that!"The Ludwigs' impatient prompting made it seem like they were bestowing Elijah a great honor by allowing him to rank himself as one of the Ludwigs because he proved to be somewhat useful to them.Even Ciara was eyeing Eli

Zachary and the Ludwigs were all shocked beyond words. The concoction Elijah came up with clearly looked like a nourishing formula. Could it really be poisonous? This situation was utterly challenging everything they knew about medicine."I need to be quick. I'll use the torch emetic!" Michael yelled as his face turned an even brighter shade of red. After consuming the black liquid, an antidote that could induce vomiting, he immediately started throwing up.It looked like he had expelled all the contents in his body, but it didn't seem to help. He crumpled to the ground once more. All of his limbs were convulsing. It felt like he had been set on fire on the inside.Using whatever strength he could muster, he said, "The heavenly cure, then!""The divine elixir!""The purification soup!"On and on it went, so much so that Michael was starting to feel numb. He didn't even know what the source of the poison was. He started ruminating over the taste of what he had consumed and couldn

"Who am I to refuse you if you wish to hand the Larson family over to me on a silver platter?""Let's keep things simple," Elijah said.
