Elijah shoved the bespectacled man aside before glancing at Lynette. His jaw dropped at her beauty, and he thought to himself that he would never break off his marriage agreement if he had a fiancée as breathtaking as she was.

"What are you doing?" snapped the man in anger. He was just about to seize his chance to be a hero, only to have a country bumpkin yank him to the side.

With just a cursory look, Elijah figured out Lynette's condition, but he rambled a bunch of nonsense anyway, saying, "Relax. I spent 18 years studying medicine at Mount Quarra. I've got plenty of experience tending to cows, dogs, pigs, chickens, and other livestock. I'm a medical expert!"

"Hold it!" Wendy screeched.

She glared at Elijah in fury as she reached out to grab his hands. She had recognized him as the guy who had been running his mouth off earlier. Cows? Dogs? Pigs? What was he? A vet?

Wendy felt the vein in her forehead popping like mad. Lynette was no ordinary person! Even the top medical experts in town were just barely qualified to treat her. How could a mere vet lay his hands on her?

"Oh? Why is there a fly on your chest?"

Abruptly fixing his eyes on Wendy, Elijah reached toward her chest.

Wendy cried in alarm before retracting her hand and shrieking in rage, "You perv!"

Elijah seized this chance to rip open Lynette's collar, revealing her skin. Then, he pricked her with a needle that he kept hidden beneath his fingertip while at the same time feasting his eyes on the sight before him.

He gulped as saliva pooled in his mouth.

Alas, in Wendy's eyes, it looked like he was sexually harassing Lynette.

"Let go of her, you animal!" Wendy screamed while reaching out to pull Elijah's hand away.

The bespectacled man from earlier was also enraged. Elijah was an even bigger pervert than he was! How could he just put his hands on her like that?

Unfortunately, neither one of them could overpower Elijah. He swiftly tapped a few spots along Lynette's abdomen while protesting, "Didn't that doctor in glasses say she's having a heatstroke?

"What's the big deal about me tearing her clothes open a bit to cool her down? Was it wrong of me to do that?"

Wendy and the other onlookers were a little gobsmacked. Elijah had a point, but how did that explain why he was touching Lynette?

Elijah gave Lynette one final tap, and she let out a groan. As she started to regain consciousness, Elijah dusted his hands off and exhaled before saying, "Alright! That will be ten grand. Who's going to settle the—

"Hey! Why are you trying to hit me?"

He ran off as quickly as he could, all the while ranting to himself that his mentor, Alaric Talbot, had lied to him. Alaric had claimed that the women in the cities were all gentle and refined. Yet here were a couple of women who wanted to hit him before he even charged them for his services.

Elijah gave up and decided to seek out Ciara instead.

Meanwhile, Lynette clutched her forehead as she slowly came to her senses. She still felt a little dizzy. Wendy quickly helped Lynette into a seating position.

"Lyn, you're awake!" Wendy exclaimed in joy, her tears threatening to fall.

"M-My condition flared up just now. How did I wake up?" Lynette asked with a lingering sense of dread.

Ever since she was a kid, she suffered from a heart condition. Whenever the symptoms flared up, all the medical experts hired by her family would have to tend to her for days in order to save her from the clutches of death.

This time, since the symptomatic episode happened while she was out, she thought she was done for.

"What? Your condition flared up just now? It wasn't because of a heatstroke?" Wendy exclaimed in horror. All the color drained out of her face.

She was aware of Lynette's heart condition and knew it was a severe one, too. There was a chance that her episodes would turn fatal!

Could it be that Elijah had truly rescued Lynette?

Turning red, Wendy informed Lynette, "A young man saved you just now. I was wrong about him… Hang on."

After a suspicious pause, Wendy continued, "You have a heart condition, so it wasn't a heatstroke. In that case, why did he rip your top open?"

She looked at Lynette's partially revealed chest and saw the marks that clearly came from someone pressing their fingers against her skin.

Wendy swiftly realized what had happened. Clenching her jaw, she cried out, "That pervert! He'd better not let me catch him!"

No man had ever laid even a finger on Lynette before!

It had been nearly two decades since Elijah had last seen the world beyond Mount Quarra. A lot had changed in Ashford. He felt a sense of melancholy as he roamed the streets that were utterly foreign to him now.

Elijah was a member of the Ludwig family here in Ashford. 17 years ago, he encountered Alaric, who introduced himself as a mystic from the Quarra Mystics community. Alaric took Elijah to Mount Quarra and became his mentor, teaching him the art of medicine, mystic practices, and martial arts.

After haphazardly learning everything, Elijah had been forced out of Mount Quarra by Alaric. The marriage agreements in his bag were all real, too.

According to Alaric, the previous generation of mystics at Mount Quarra had been extremely renowned in the country. Prominent families from all over established marriage agreements with the Quarra Mystics, promising that their daughters will marry the future generation of mystics.

Alas, Alaric only ended up taking one mentee—Elijah. And now, all nine marriage agreements belonged to him. However, no man could marry nine wives, not in today's society. He had no choice but to set off into the city and break off the marriage agreements.

After giving it some thought, he also figured that if he met someone he liked along the way, he would fulfill that particular marriage agreement and get himself a wife.

His first stop was the Ludwigs, which was his own family. Gripping his bag, he asked around and easily found his way there. After all, Ciara was well-known all across Ashford, her fame only second to that of Lynette.

Elijah arrived at a compound with two stone lions at the entrance, as well as a sign that said Ludwig Clinic. The entrance was filled with a long line of patients of all ages here to seek medical treatment.

Some rather healthy-looking young men were glancing around. It seemed like they were faking a condition so that they could get a chance to see Ciara.

"I heard that Dr. Ludwig won't be seeing any patients today."

"The Greers of Bertham have been making moves into this region. I heard that they intend to wipe out the Ludwigs, too. I'm sure Dr. Ludwig is worried about that, so it only makes sense she's not in the mood to see any patients."

"What a shame. We won't get to see Dr. Ludwig today, after all."

Elijah was just about to enter the compound when two haughty people stopped him.

They studied him derisively before asking, "What do you want? Are you here for a medical consultation? You'll need to line up with everyone else!"

A medical consultation? Whatever for?

Elijah was infuriated. He was a genius doctor himself and didn't care for the pretentiousness. Marching into the compound, he headed straight for the main building while shouting, "Ciara, your fiancé has come to see you!"

Everyone instantly fell silent. There were over 300 people in and around the clinic, and they all turned toward Elijah in shock.

Even the two men who tried to stop Elijah earlier were stupefied.

Was he claiming to be Ciara's fiancé? Did he know what he was talking about?

There were dozens of Ciara's admirers in the crowd, and after taking in Elijah's shabby appearance, they instantly flew off the handle. They had never met such a brazen and ridiculous person before.

The young men scowled and shot to their feet. All of them glared at Elijah in fury and questioned him.

"What did you say?"

"You'd better explain yourself!"

"When did Ms. Ludwig get a fiancé?"

"If you don't clarify things properly and end up tarnishing Dr. Ludwig's reputation, we'll—"

Just then, an old butler hurried out and greeted Elijah, "Mr. Ludwig, Ms. Ludwig has invited you in."

Immediately, everyone outside froze in shock.

Carl and Ciara were stunned, especially Ciara, whose icy demeanor obviously slipped. However, Carl quickly regained his composure and let out a scoff. Elijah's words irritated him, and his eyes flashed darkly. Nevertheless, he merely picked up his cup of coffee and blew on it before remarking, "It doesn't matter whether you're breaking off the marriage agreement or rejecting it. All I hope is that you understand the situation."That being said, I am not a cold-hearted man with no regard for family. If you encounter any difficulties, feel free to seek me out.""That won't be needed." Elijah shook his head and said, "I have to head off to the next family now. I'm glad we're both on the same page about this."Carl merely chuckled in response.Seeing that Elijah was about to leave, Ciara frowned and called out, "Dad, I heard that it was Mom and Grandpa who agreed to the marriage. Won't they be displeased that we called off the marriage agreement just like that?"Scoffing once more,

Dumbstruck, everyone stared at the nylon string on the table."How impudent!" Carl snapped as he stared after Elijah's retreating figure. "Everyone makes mistakes sometimes. Even if you did get a fake, it's not your fault. The fact that he tore the painting apart just like that proves that he's the one who doesn't know how to act with propriety!"He proceeded to console Jared by saying, "Plus, looking at the painting now, it's evidently the work of a master forger. It's completely normal for you to have failed to notice it was a fake. You don't need to feel bad about it, Jared."Looking utterly red in the face, Jared jumped up from his seat and declared, "Mr. Ludwig, I'll pay top dollar to get a real one for Ciara right away!""Jared, desperate times call for desperate measures," Carl said earnestly. "The Greers are moving aggressively against us. We can't delay any longer. You and Ciara should get married as quickly as possible!"I think you two should get married within the next

"Hang on," Elijah called out. "When did I agree to treat anyone?""It makes sense that you're backing out now. Your trickery would be exposed in front of a real expert," a curt voice rang out as a young man in glasses came down from the second floor. Both Thomas and Wendy greeted him respectfully, "Dr. Larson."Even Lynette showed a look of respect when the young man appeared. Clearly, he was held in high esteem by the Grays."My name is Zachary Larson. I'm the seventh-generation successor and future heir of the Larson family. Here in Ashford, my family is renowned for having dabbled in medicine for generations. "I'm also the vice chairman of the Ashford branch of the Traditional Medicine Association, and I'm a ninth-tier practitioner of acupuncture."Slowly approaching with a faint smile, Zachary gave Elijah a cursory glance. When he spotted the straw hat and shabby clothing, his expression flashed with silent mockery.Looking away, he continued, "As they say, Mr. Thomas, ther

"Mr. Larson!"Melody and the other Ludwigs immediately reacted when they spotted Zachary. Shoving Elijah aside, they rushed up to Zachary and said in excitement, "Mr. Larson, we're from the Ludwig family, and we came here today to discuss a deal with you!"Dripping with sweat, Zachary didn't even bother to look at the Ludwigs."Get out of my way!" he snapped, leaving the Ludwigs feeling rather dumbstruck."Ms. Lynette's life is in grave danger!" Zachary cried out impatiently. "Please come with me at once, Mr. Ludwig!""Why should I come with you?" Elijah responded coolly. "That's your business. I told you not to administer that treatment, but you insisted on doing it anyway. What gives you the gall to demand that I come back with you now? I don't owe you people anything.""You…" Zachary didn't know what to say, but he panicked to find that Elijah was walking off. If he couldn't get Elijah to come back with him, he was doomed."Just what do you want?" Zachary yelled after Elijah.

"Look what you did, you jinx! This is happening because you said it would!" Wendy snapped and glared at Elijah.Lynette, who had gone pale, calmly said, "Don't get out of the car. Keep all windows and doors shut. Wendy, call my dad at once. I'll ram our way through the vans.""Don't bother, Ms. Lynette," Nate said scornfully. "I'm giving you three seconds. If you don't cooperate, I'll smash your windows. Ms. Greer sends her greetings.""I knew it was that bitch!" Wendy cried out weakly. She was so scared that she could barely speak. Tearing up from fear, she continued, "We're screwed. What should we do now? If we'd known this would happen, we should've brought the bodyguards with us!""Hold on tight. I'm going to ram through the vans now!" Lynette said with a determined expression. She switched gears and went for the accelerator.Elijah couldn't resist glancing at Lynette. He didn't expect her to be this bold."Forget it. Can't you see there are over a dozen vans surrounding us?

Frowning at Ciara, Elijah asked, "How is my having dinner here in any way related to you?""How is it not?" Ciara scoffed as she stepped forward. "Don't think I don't know what you're thinking. Although you act like you don't care, in reality, you're still hung up on this matter. You're purposely showing up wherever I go to get my attention and make your presence known, aren't you?"Frowning, Ciara continued, "Elijah, don't you find your actions too immature?""Kindly stop disturbing me while I'm having my dinner," Elijah responded."Your dinner?" Ciara repeated with a sneer. After taking in the table filled with food, she remarked, "Do you think you can afford to eat at Nyx? The food on the table would cost at least ten grand. Don't tell me you're planning to run off without paying the bill!""Oh, it's you!" Jared commented with a scoff of his own. He was still bearing a grudge over how Elijah had humiliated him the last time. His gaze was dark as he said, "I got my people to

Greg was stupefied. He came forward and questioned Elijah, "What's going on?"Then, he looked at Ivan. With a grim expression, he called out, "Ivan Sharp?"Greg wanted to scream at Elijah. Ivan was a reckless and domineering young man who lorded over everyone in Ashford. Even Greg himself dared not offend someone like that."Ms. Lynette," Ivan greeted with a mocking sneer. "So, he's one of yours, huh? That's fine by me. After all, just like the Hudsons and the Ludwigs, the Greers want to deal with you Grays, too. Consider yourself unlucky for crossing paths with us today!""When did you start working as the Greer family's lackey?" Lynette asked indifferently.Ivan's expression darkened menacingly. "How dare you insult me?""Don't push it, Ivan!" Greg stepped forward and barked. "If you're going to be her bodyguard, what am I going to be, then?" Elijah spoke up in disgruntlement."You?" Benedict gave Elijah a quick once-over before lifting his chin and continuing, "You can get along with whatever you're supposed to be doing. Now that we, the Fangs, have taken over the duty of protecting Ms. Lynette, you're no longer needed here."He gave the order without any regard for Elijah at all."Lyn still needs a doctor," Thomas said coolly. "You can remain by her side as her doctor. You simply needn't worry about looking out for her safety."Although Elijah had saved Lynette a few times, Thomas couldn't fully trust a random stranger from the countryside whose background he knew nothing about."Sure," Elijah responded with a nod. He couldn't be bothered to care too much anyway.Once Benedict heard that Elijah was still going to stick around, his eyes flickered with displeasure. Anyone who knew about the Fangs would be alarmed at the very mention of their name.Wendy's reaction was especially noticeable. With a look of fear and awe, she secretly observed Benedict as if she were studying a mythical creature. Even her heart was pounding wildly."The Fangs surpass even the Seabound and Lakeshore Trade Associations! How did you manage to hire someone from the Fangs, Mr. Thomas?" Wendy asked with a look of respect."Hah! The Seabound and Lakeshore Trade Associations are nothing!"Alas, Benedict scoffed at the comparison Wendy made. He let out a scornful chuckle, as though comparing the two with the Fangs was a great dishonor to him."We, the Fangs, are the real giants here. We even have our headquarters in Summiton! All of these weaklings at Ashford are nothing compared to us!"However, both Wendy and Thomas didn't feel insulted by Benedict's remarks. On the contrary, they agreed with him."The Fangs recently opened a subdivision here in Ashford, and Benedic

In response to Carl's eager question, Jared nodded and said, "That's right, Mr. Ludwig! My family staked all of our assets to get the project. In a few days, let's bring this matter to Simon and have a discussion with him."Carl's eyes lit up."I knew you were the person we could count on to go up against the Greers, Jared!" he said emphatically as he grasped Jared's hand.…Standing at an intersection in Ashford, Elijah looked a little lost. Although he lived with the Ludwigs as a child, he didn't have much of a relationship with them.He had never met his father before, and even his mother died from illness when he was very young. The only person he could consider family was his mentor, Alaric.Elijah unfurled his fist to reveal a worn emblem on his palm. Half of it had been burned off. This was the only keepsake he had left of his father."To think I would be kicked out of the family after returning from Mount Quarra," Elijah remarked with a laugh. He didn't think too much

That should be worthwhile for you, right?"His expression was stern as he continued in a threatening tone, "Don't think you can do whatever you want and cross the line just because you have something you can use against us. You got that?""Don't be too greedy!" Melody snapped resentfully, her tone mocking as well. "Not only is Uncle Carl offering to restore you to the family, but he'll even give you a job and help you find someone to marry. Don't tell me you want more. What else do you want? In fact, the Ludwigs believed they could now rank even higher than the Grays! After all, even the Grays lost to the Greers, so it meant they were weaker than the current Ludwigs."Didn't you hear what I said, Elijah?" Edgar urged impatiently in a standoffish tone that made him sound like he was doing Elijah a service."That's right! Since the family has decided to acknowledge you, you should appreciate the gesture and do as you're told!" Melody snapped in displeasure, her brows creased. "Don't tell me you intend to put on airs now. You should be grateful that you're not totally useless to the family.""Exactly!" Hamish added in contempt. "Who knows how you got lucky that you managed to prove yourself useful today? You should be thanking your lucky stars for that!"The Ludwigs' impatient prompting made it seem like they were bestowing Elijah a great honor by allowing him to rank himself as one of the Ludwigs because he proved to be somewhat useful to them.Even Ciara was eyeing Eli

Zachary and the Ludwigs were all shocked beyond words. The concoction Elijah came up with clearly looked like a nourishing formula. Could it really be poisonous? This situation was utterly challenging everything they knew about medicine."I need to be quick. I'll use the torch emetic!" After consuming the black liquid, an antidote that could induce vomiting, he immediately started throwing up.It looked like he had expelled all the contents in his body, but it didn't seem to help. He crumpled to the ground once more. All of his limbs were convulsing. It felt like he had been set on fire on the inside.Using whatever strength he could muster, he said, "The heavenly cure, then!""The divine elixir!""The purification soup!"On and on it went, so much so that Michael was starting to feel numb. "Who am I to refuse you if you wish to hand the Larson family over to me on a silver platter?""Let's keep things simple," Elijah said.
