"Mr. Larson!"

Melody and the other Ludwigs immediately reacted when they spotted Zachary. Shoving Elijah aside, they rushed up to Zachary and said in excitement, "Mr. Larson, we're from the Ludwig family, and we came here today to discuss a deal with you!"

Dripping with sweat, Zachary didn't even bother to look at the Ludwigs.

"Get out of my way!" he snapped, leaving the Ludwigs feeling rather dumbstruck.

"Ms. Lynette's life is in grave danger!" Zachary cried out impatiently. "Please come with me at once, Mr. Ludwig!"

"Why should I come with you?" Elijah responded coolly. "That's your business. I told you not to administer that treatment, but you insisted on doing it anyway. What gives you the gall to demand that I come back with you now? I don't owe you people anything."

"You…" Zachary didn't know what to say, but he panicked to find that Elijah was walking off. If he couldn't get Elijah to come back with him, he was doomed.

"Just what do you want?" Zachary yelled after Elijah.

"Is that the attitude you're going to take when you need me? Do you call this a plea for help?" Elijah remarked with a laugh.

Zachary took a deep breath. His cheeks were hot with indignation and humiliation as he bowed deeply to Elijah and said, "I was wrong, sir. Please hurry back to the house!"

The Ludwigs, who witnessed everything, were even more dumbfounded now.

Back inside the Gray residence, Elijah pressed a few spots along Lynette's abdomen. Before the others could even get a good look at what he was doing, she started regaining consciousness.

Zachary was stupefied.

"All done," Elijah said with a clap of his hands. He immensely enjoyed the way Lynette's skin felt under his touch.

Once Lynette woke up, she solemnly declared, "Dad, I want him to be my personal doctor. I'll give him a monthly salary of 30 thousand dollars."

"That won't do!" Thomas refused with a frown. "Have you lost your mind, Lyn? We have no idea who he is or where he comes from. Why do you trust him after just one treatment? I think it's better if you keep Dr. Larson around instead."

"Dad, I trust my judgment," Lynette said. Though she seemed weak, her voice was unusually firm.

Thomas hesitated briefly, but he stopped protesting. "Nevertheless, he can only have minimum contact with you to avoid stirring up any rumors. You can keep him around to tend to you, but he mustn't be allowed to enter your room, understand? I'll find you a better doctor as soon as possible."

"Wait a minute," Elijah called out. "Did I agree to be your doctor?"

Lynette turned to Elijah and smiled, though her eyes seemed to gleam with a hint of cunning. "I heard you're looking for your fiancée, Lynette Gray, right? What a coincidence! I'm her younger cousin. My name is also Lynette—Lynette Perry.

"Think about it. My cousin is one of the most powerful businesswomen in Ashford. Maintaining hundreds of millions of dollars in assets keeps her extremely busy. How could she make the time to see you?

"Plus, considering what you look like, do you think she'll accept you if you claim to be her fiancé?

"Why don't you work with me first? Once the opportunity comes along, I'll introduce you to her. This gives you a better shot of getting to her. In any case, you just returned to Ashford. Don't you want to find a place to stay first?"

Elijah's eyes brightened slightly. "You have a point there!"

Lynette ranked at the top of society. He would need to slowly climb up the social ladder to get to her. Otherwise, things wouldn't work out well if he popped up out of the blue.

"Excellent! That's settled, then. I'll prepare you a room in the house, and I'll pay you a monthly salary of 30 thousand dollars. I'll also cover your room and board. There is only one rule—you are not allowed to go up to the second floor and enter my room."

"Got it."

The Greers of Bertham were immensely influential, far beyond what the people of Ashford could compare to.

In the last few years, in a bid to expand their reach, the Greers had gobbled up many of the less prominent families in neighboring cities. All of the families who had been taken down were wiped from existence.

The Greer family's ambition extended to Summiton, the state capital. However, that city was filled with powerful and dangerous figures. Even the Greer family dared not challenge the people there quite just yet.

Instead, their next goal was to take over Ashford!

Over at the Greer residence, Danielle Greer, the oldest daughter of the Greer family, was scowling darkly.

"Lynette Gray, the beautiful and talented heiress of Ashford?" Danielle chewed on the words with a look of venomous hatred in her eyes. "Damn it! How can an insignificant place like Ashford be home to someone like her?

"Tell Dom and Hank to get the job done. I want them to disfigure that bitch!

Nate Boone, a man with tattooed arms, hesitated as he said, "Ms. Greer, I don't think it's wise to act so openly. Moreover, she might have bodyguards with her at all times."

"Why are you even talking?" Danielle raised her hand and slapped Nate in the face. "There's nothing that we, the Greers, can't smooth over. Hurry up and do as I say!"

Elijah spent the night at the Gray residence. He was well-rested after a good night's sleep, and following breakfast, Lynette gave him a ride to the office.

Wendy was furious to see Elijah hogging the front passenger seat. "Where am I supposed to sit, then?"

"As a doctor, I should be seated beside my patient at all times so that I can keep an eye on her. Isn't that an entirely reasonable thing to do?" Elijah said with a grin.

Wendy couldn't disagree with that, but she still got the feeling that something was amiss. Lynette got into the driver's seat and glanced at Elijah but said nothing.

The scent of both women's perfumes mingled in the car, and from his seat, Elijah could even see Lynette's stockinged legs. He thoroughly enjoyed the view.

Meanwhile, sitting in the back seat, Wendy stuck her head forward and commented anxiously, "Lyn, I heard that the Greers of Bertham are utterly insane. Their recent attempts to sabotage us have failed, but I heard that Ms. Greer is a lunatic.

"Do you think she'll resort to some kind of outrageous method to get even with us? You don't have your bodyguards with you, either."

After a brief hesitation, Lynette replied, "We're living in a civilized society. I doubt she'll do anything in broad daylight."

"If you're running a business, you should never hesitate to assume the worst of others," Elijah chimed in.

"Hah! What do you know? You're just a country bumpkin. What makes you think you can make observations about the business world?" Wendy retorted.

Alas, while she was speaking, they had just arrived at a quiet area near the foot of the hill. There was no one else around, save for a strange convoy of black vans that came rushing over to surround Lynette's car, forcing her to stop.

Following that, over a dozen men with menacing expressions came out from the vans and crowded around the car. Some of them were already brandishing their bats and machetes.

All the color drained out of Wendy's face as she cowered in fear.

Nate sauntered up to the car and rapped on the window on Lynette's side of the car before commanding harshly, "Get out!"

"Look what you did, you jinx! This is happening because you said it would!" Wendy snapped and glared at Elijah.Lynette, who had gone pale, calmly said, "Don't get out of the car. Keep all windows and doors shut. Wendy, call my dad at once. I'll ram our way through the vans.""Don't bother, Ms. Lynette," Nate said scornfully. "I'm giving you three seconds. If you don't cooperate, I'll smash your windows. Ms. Greer sends her greetings.""I knew it was that bitch!" Wendy cried out weakly. She was so scared that she could barely speak. Tearing up from fear, she continued, "We're screwed. What should we do now? If we'd known this would happen, we should've brought the bodyguards with us!""Hold on tight. I'm going to ram through the vans now!" Lynette said with a determined expression. She switched gears and went for the accelerator.Elijah couldn't resist glancing at Lynette. He didn't expect her to be this bold."Forget it. Can't you see there are over a dozen vans surrounding us?

Frowning at Ciara, Elijah asked, "How is my having dinner here in any way related to you?""How is it not?" Ciara scoffed as she stepped forward. "Don't think I don't know what you're thinking. Although you act like you don't care, in reality, you're still hung up on this matter. You're purposely showing up wherever I go to get my attention and make your presence known, aren't you?"Frowning, Ciara continued, "Elijah, don't you find your actions too immature?""Kindly stop disturbing me while I'm having my dinner," Elijah responded."Your dinner?" Ciara repeated with a sneer. After taking in the table filled with food, she remarked, "Do you think you can afford to eat at Nyx? The food on the table would cost at least ten grand. Don't tell me you're planning to run off without paying the bill!""Oh, it's you!" Jared commented with a scoff of his own. He was still bearing a grudge over how Elijah had humiliated him the last time. His gaze was dark as he said, "I got my people to

Greg was stupefied. He came forward and questioned Elijah, "What's going on?"Then, he looked at Ivan. With a grim expression, he called out, "Ivan Sharp?"Greg wanted to scream at Elijah. Ivan was a reckless and domineering young man who lorded over everyone in Ashford. Even Greg himself dared not offend someone like that."Ms. Lynette," Ivan greeted with a mocking sneer. "So, he's one of yours, huh? That's fine by me. After all, just like the Hudsons and the Ludwigs, the Greers want to deal with you Grays, too. Consider yourself unlucky for crossing paths with us today!""When did you start working as the Greer family's lackey?" Lynette asked indifferently.Ivan's expression darkened menacingly. "How dare you insult me?""Don't push it, Ivan!" Greg stepped forward and barked. "This might be your territory, but that doesn't mean we're scared of you!""Who said a lapdog could speak up at a time like this?" Ivan retorted icily. "Since Ciara Ludwig managed to escape, I'll have to

Lynette and Wendy were equally stunned, their eyes filled with disbelief as they stared at Elijah, who was casually eating while sitting on top of Ivan's men.He was a beast!Elijah wiped his mouth and said, "Is there anything else? If not, we should leave.""Let's go," Lynette quickly said, grabbing Wendy with one hand and Elijah's arm with the other as she led them outside. Elijah felt a sudden jolt in his heart and boldly clasped Lynette's small hand in return.Lynette tried to pull away but failed. "It's nothing," Lynette said as she quickly changed the subject. "I don't care if these are real. You need to keep them safe and make sure you don't reveal them without a good reason.""Why not?""Because you're still too weak," Lynette said as she glanced at Elijah coolly. "These things will bring harm to you. Take Ciara alone. I heard that the son of the Hudson family is fervently pursuing her. The Hudsons alone are far more powerful than someone like you from the countryside can ever imagine."As for Charlotte, I heard that Walter Reid, a young duke and another war hero at the Southeastern Military Command, is attempting to woo her as well. How do you think a seasoned killer like the duke would react if he found out she has a fiancé?"Eyeing Elijah with mixed emotions, she answered her own question, "You'll disappear for good."Elijah merely chuckled in response before saying, "Alright. Let's head back now."Lynette continued to have mixed feelings as she drove back home. She

During breakfast, a red-faced Wendy glowered at Elijah, as if she wanted to eat him alive. She had woken up to use the bathroom, only to end up having him barge inside wearing nothing but his underwear."Alright," Lynette spoke up. "After breakfast, follow me out. We're going to meet someone."Soon, it was time to leave. Lynette brought Elijah and a few others with her up the hill. Elijah was a little startled when they arrived at the villas up on the peak. He recognized them to be the ones he had seen yesterday. After the guards let Elijah, Lynette, and the group into the compound, Elijah said, "My stomach feels a bit off. I'll head to the bathroom first."He looked around and dashed off to the bathroom he spotted while Lynette shook her head at his antics. In the living room, Lynette saw Charlotte, who was dressed casually."Charlotte!" Lynette squealed before throwing herself at Charlotte."You've grown up so much," Charlotte remarked as she stroked Lynette's hair affectionat

A thread diagnosis?James was taken aback. A thread diagnosis was a closely guarded trade secret that was found among the ancient royal physicians who needed to diagnose members of the royal family without having any physical contact. They were only allowed to use a thread tied around the patient's wrist to check their pulse. Mastering this technique required a great deal of knowledge and understanding.Considering this was modern society, James didn't devote himself to practicing the art of thread diagnosis, so he wasn't an expert in it.James glanced at Charlotte, who simply nodded back at him."Fine."James took a deep breath. Being an accomplished doctor from a respectable background, he wasn't afraid of being challenged by a con artist. Besides, it was a bit rude to touch a woman's hand unnecessarily. "Bring me some thread."Once the thread was brought over, James wrapped it around Lynette's wrist before taking the other end and calmly checking her pulse.Wendy and Ch

"You said she fell into the water?" James questioned before scoffing in annoyance. "Who can tell something like that from reading someone's pulse?""I sense a ball of stagnated energy deep within her lungs. That's a sign of someone who had nearly drowned in her childhood," Elijah coolly explained.Charlotte's expression became even more complicated. "I did fall into the water when I was five years old. I nearly died that day."James was rendered speechless."You are indeed incredible, Mr. Ludwig," Charlotte said with a faint smile. "I trust your abilities. However, I need you and James to leave us for now. I have something to discuss with Lyn."James glowered at Elijah as the two left the living room, leaving Charlotte and Lynette alone. After a brief silence, Charlotte began, "Lyn, do you know why I decided to come back to Ashford during my leave? I'm here to look for someone.""To look for someone?" Lynette repeated in surprise."That's right," Charlotte said wistfully. "My p

"If you're going to be her bodyguard, what am I going to be, then?" Elijah spoke up in disgruntlement."You?" Benedict gave Elijah a quick once-over before lifting his chin and continuing, "You can get along with whatever you're supposed to be doing. Now that we, the Fangs, have taken over the duty of protecting Ms. Lynette, you're no longer needed here."He gave the order without any regard for Elijah at all."Lyn still needs a doctor," Thomas said coolly. "You can remain by her side as her doctor. You simply needn't worry about looking out for her safety."Although Elijah had saved Lynette a few times, Thomas couldn't fully trust a random stranger from the countryside whose background he knew nothing about."Sure," Elijah responded with a nod. He couldn't be bothered to care too much anyway.Once Benedict heard that Elijah was still going to stick around, his eyes flickered with displeasure. He was just about to make a comment when a security guard came running over from the

Anyone who knew about the Fangs would be alarmed at the very mention of their name.Wendy's reaction was especially noticeable. With a look of fear and awe, she secretly observed Benedict as if she were studying a mythical creature. Even her heart was pounding wildly."The Fangs surpass even the Seabound and Lakeshore Trade Associations! How did you manage to hire someone from the Fangs, Mr. Thomas?" Wendy asked with a look of respect."Hah! The Seabound and Lakeshore Trade Associations are nothing!"Alas, Benedict scoffed at the comparison Wendy made. He let out a scornful chuckle, as though comparing the two with the Fangs was a great dishonor to him."We, the Fangs, are the real giants here. We even have our headquarters in Summiton! All of these weaklings at Ashford are nothing compared to us!"However, both Wendy and Thomas didn't feel insulted by Benedict's remarks. On the contrary, they agreed with him."The Fangs recently opened a subdivision here in Ashford, and Benedic

In response to Carl's eager question, Jared nodded and said, "That's right, Mr. Ludwig! My family staked all of our assets to get the project. In a few days, let's bring this matter to Simon and have a discussion with him."Carl's eyes lit up."I knew you were the person we could count on to go up against the Greers, Jared!" he said emphatically as he grasped Jared's hand.…Standing at an intersection in Ashford, Elijah looked a little lost. Although he lived with the Ludwigs as a child, he didn't have much of a relationship with them.He had never met his father before, and even his mother died from illness when he was very young. The only person he could consider family was his mentor, Alaric.Elijah unfurled his fist to reveal a worn emblem on his palm. Half of it had been burned off. This was the only keepsake he had left of his father."To think I would be kicked out of the family after returning from Mount Quarra," Elijah remarked with a laugh. He didn't think too much

"That's enough," Carl snapped exasperatedly. "Stop trying to put on airs by holding out on us. This matter is settled. I'll even give you something else."He held up a finger and said, "I'll allow you to choose a position in any of the companies owned by me or the Ludwig family. That should be worthwhile for you, right?"His expression was stern as he continued in a threatening tone, "Don't think you can do whatever you want and cross the line just because you have something you can use against us. You got that?""Don't be too greedy!" Melody snapped resentfully, her tone mocking as well. "Not only is Uncle Carl offering to restore you to the family, but he'll even give you a job and help you find someone to marry. Don't tell me you want more. What else do you want? Money?"Hamish buffed up his chest and declared, "You're just an outsider. The family is already being very kind by doing this much for you. You should count your blessings! In fact, the Ludwigs believed they could now rank even higher than the Grays! After all, even the Grays lost to the Greers, so it meant they were weaker than the current Ludwigs."Didn't you hear what I said, Elijah?" Edgar urged impatiently in a standoffish tone that made him sound like he was doing Elijah a service."That's right! Since the family has decided to acknowledge you, you should appreciate the gesture and do as you're told!" Melody snapped in displeasure, her brows creased. "Don't tell me you intend to put on airs now. You should be grateful that you're not totally useless to the family.""Exactly!" Hamish added in contempt. "Who knows how you got lucky that you managed to prove yourself useful today? You should be thanking your lucky stars for that!"The Ludwigs' impatient prompting made it seem like they were bestowing Elijah a great honor by allowing him to rank himself as one of the Ludwigs because he proved to be somewhat useful to them.Even Ciara was eyeing Eli

Zachary and the Ludwigs were all shocked beyond words. The concoction Elijah came up with clearly looked like a nourishing formula. Could it really be poisonous? This situation was utterly challenging everything they knew about medicine."I need to be quick. I'll use the torch emetic!" Michael yelled as his face turned an even brighter shade of red. After consuming the black liquid, an antidote that could induce vomiting, he immediately started throwing up.It looked like he had expelled all the contents in his body, but it didn't seem to help. He crumpled to the ground once more. All of his limbs were convulsing. It felt like he had been set on fire on the inside.Using whatever strength he could muster, he said, "The heavenly cure, then!""The divine elixir!""The purification soup!"On and on it went, so much so that Michael was starting to feel numb. He didn't even know what the source of the poison was. He started ruminating over the taste of what he had consumed and couldn

Michael wondered if Elijah was really some kind of genius.Meanwhile, after hearing what Zachary said, the other Ludwigs felt as if they had been slapped in the face.Did Zachary just claim that Elijah, the person they kicked out of the family, was more medically skilled than he was? He had to have lost his mind! The Ludwigs were filled with disbelief.Ciara lifted her head. Her eyes flashed with surprise as well. She started scrutinizing the ex-fiancé she had scorned as if to reacquaint herself with him.Alas, the situation was now beyond their control."So be it," Michael replied in amusement. "Who am I to refuse you if you wish to hand the Larson family over to me on a silver platter?""Let's keep things simple," Elijah said. He selected a few medicinal ingredients and tossed them into a bowl together. In just less than ten seconds, he prepared a concoction and handed it over to Michael."Here you go. Drink up," he said nonchalantly.Michael eyed the bowl in suspicion. It c

Get lost! Stop embarrassing the family!" Hamish Ludwig came forward and yelled at Elijah."Do you actually think you're even more skilled than Ciara? You're just a clown! What makes you think you can come forward now? You have no self-awareness at all!"All of the Ludwigs started ranting at Elijah. They had lost the competition. Even Zachary had lost. They thought they were about to witness Elijah begging like a dog—but they were wrong.Elijah scratched his ear while asking, "Are you deaf? I said you guys acted like a bunch of kids throwing tantrums. How pointless."Michael's expression darkened, and all of the Ludwigs were shocked.Elijah must have lost his mind.
