I have to start by introducing myself properly, my name is Nora, the only daughter, and last child of the late plantation owner; Mr. Gabriel. I was raised single-handedly by my father because my mother left us when I was still a baby.
The only people I knew as a family were my Dad and my two elder brothers but when I was three years of age, my elder brother died due to a sickness he had sustained at birth. After his death, I was left with my father and Ryan; my brother.
At age 12, Ryan became a rude boy and this gave my Dad concern because he was the only male child he had left, all efforts to make him change his bad ways proved abortive. Well, I wasn't close to him because of his bad ways.
My father had a lot of workers at his plantation, so, every morning we all report there to watch them do their work and also to give them little assistance. Ned was one of the hard-working workers my Dad had. His childhood experience was similar to mine but more tragic than mine.
Ned was raised by his grandmother's sister, he was made to believe that his mother abandoned him at birth, and his father didn't accept him because he didn't believe the child she was carrying was his son; besides he already has a wife and his mother would not allow him to take her in.
As a result, Ned's mother took him to the sister of his lover's mother to take care of her while she travels abroad to look for greener pastures. Since her departure, Aunt Lucy has raised Ned and also told him that she was his grandmother.
This was the reason why I got closer to Ned, who practically became my lover. We had the same childhood experience, so we share similar ideas and we were together most of the time.
Immediately I saw that his grandmother walked in one early morning, I got high hopes that he will follow suit, but to my dismay, he didn't show up. I waited for an extra hour if he will show up but he didn't. I got up and walked up to his grandmother.
"Good morning grandma, I greeted with a smile.
Good morning dear. She responded, how are you doing and how was your night?
My night was splendid and yours?
Mine was great. Ned isn't here yet, he is on an errand for your father and he will be back soon.
It's okay grandma. I responded and turned to leave.
It was not until noon that Ned came. As usual, we went to the end of the plantation to play games. After playing for some time, Ned took me by the right hand and looked directly into my eyes, and said;
If there is one thing you should never forget at the dawn of each day; if there is one thing you should never forget or if there is one thing you should ever Cherish and continue to nurture is the fact that I love you deeply from my heart.
Nothing will change that fact, there is nothing so strong that will break what I have for you, my love for you is till eternity. I love you now, always, and till after death.
Well, I have made a promise to give you this( he dipped his hand into his pocket to bring out a ring). The ring has a symbol of infinity. As he placed it in my hand, he told me to cherish the ring even as I cherish him.
As I tried to express my love to him and also appreciate the gift he gave to me, my brother called Ned from behind. Ned had no other option but to leave me alone while he goes ahead to attend to my brother.
The infinity ring was found by Ned on the plantation as he tried to harvest cucumbers about a year ago. He kept it with him and made a promise to give it to me. On the day he took it home to show his grandmother, she was shocked but she never expressed it to avoid raising any form of suspicion.
Ned's father has given that same ring to his mother as a prove of his eternal love for him. But after he refused to get married to her and accept their son, she threw it away on the night that Ned's father couldn't stand for her not even the little Ned that she was carrying in her arms.
Aunt Lucy watched her in the act after which she rushed to the same spot to get the infinity ring. She searched and searched for the ring that night but she couldn't find it.
Now, after 16 years, her son has found that same ring and is also giving it out to his lover.
*****
I continued staring at the ring on my hand until I heard the sound of voices coming from the direction of our house. I ran at a great speed to check what was happening. When I got there, I met the dead body of my father.
My father has just died of a heart attack. He has kept his life savings in one of the boxes in his office at the front of our house. He returned that afternoon to take part of the money, but when he came, he didn't find anything.
Thus, he sent Ryan to come to fetch Ned so that he can be questioned too. Upon his arrival, he told my father that he has seen my brother collecting money from the box but Ryan has denied it. As they argued about the Money, my poor father slumped and died out of shock.
Ryan automatically became the boss, and this made him do whatever pleases him anytime. He didn't pay the workers, and this made most of them leave except for Ned and about 9 of them.
That was how I lost my Dad. I was left with Ryan; who was carefree. Although, after my Dad was laid to rest, he started giving me little attention which I wasn't comfortable with. Ryan never wanted to see me around Ned, he hated him for reasons that I cannot tell.
Anytime he sees both of us together, he would punish Ned for it.
Since I discovered that he never liked Ned, we changed our meeting point to where the cattle were reared. Ryan tried to find out where our new spot was but he didn't find us until the day he came to check on the cattle.
For the first time in my life, I witnessed how heartless someone will be. Ryan grabbed Ned by his collar and asked him to kneel before him. He gave him several rounds of knocks on his head even as he rain curses on him. He dragged him onto the floor and tied his hand with a long rope which he held as he climbed on one of our horses.
Ryan rode on the horse as Ned was also being dragged on the mud helplessly. I couldn't stand the sight of seeing any human getting that kind of inhumane treatment, not to talk of the one I love and cherished. I shed tears as I ran after the horse my brother rode on just to plead with him.
My tears didn't mean anything to him because he smiled and laughed loudly as he saw me cry, I couldn't take it anymore, so I ran back to the house.
Unknown to us, a wealthy lady has been watching this disheartening act of my brother. She sat in her car and had a good view from her tinted glass window without any attempt to save poor Ned from the wicked hands of my brother.
When I left, Ryan tripled the punishment he gave to Ned. He decided to leave him when he discovered that he was already unconscious. The wealthy lady in the car watched Ryan check if he was still conscious till the time that he loosed the rope from his hand and pushed him by the path of the road. As Ryan walked away, she made arrangements with her driver to carry the poor unconscious boy to the hospital.
That day was the last day I set my eyes on him. I made effort to search for him, but I couldn't find him. His grandmother also searched for him but all our efforts seemed to be abortive. I hated my brother because I thought that he had killed him and thrown his body somewhere.
I waited patiently each day for him to return but he didn't show up after 24 months of waiting for him. There was nothing I could do but move on with my life.
Ryan was friends with the son of a wealthy man that lived close to our plantation, and since the time of Ned's disappearance, he has started showing interest in me but I never wanted him.
I had a belief that no matter how long it took, my eternal lover will return one day, his gift of an infinity ring reminded me of this. I made a promise to myself to wait for him no matter how long it may take and if he doesn't return, we will continue our love story in the other world when I die.
On the 27th month after Ned's disappearance, Ryan called me to the sitting room to discuss with me. I was being suspicious of him because he hasn't done this since our father died. As I stood up to follow him, a lot of thoughts ran through my brain that I couldn't give answers to.
Immediately I sat down on the chair, he smiled and asked me to come closer to him because he wanted it to be a heart talk. After he said this, a cold sensation ran through my spine.
You don't have to be scared of anything Nora. I won't hurt you. I just wanted to let you know that Donald likes you and he is interested in going into a relationship with you. I have told him to come over to the house by noon so that I can leave you two to yourselves. He wanted to say more but I put him short.
" For the fact that you're older than me doesn't make you make decisions for me, Ryan. I know what I want and I also have a say in whatever happens in my life. You cannot tell me whom to go into a relationship with nor will you force me to go into it.
As I talked to my brother in anger, he stood up and held me by the hands then he drew me closer to himself and said " Nora, you don't know anything about life, you are just 17 and you act as if you know it all. Ned has gone, believe it or not. He won't come back for you, I heard he is in Italy and he is doing great over there with another woman.
Your waiting for him is equivalent to wasting your time and not moving on with your life. If he wanted to come for you, he would have done so, he left you two years ago, this is mid of his third year and he hasn't shown up.
Nora, are you blind? Isn't the handwriting on the wall clear enough for you to see clearly? Well, just like you have said, you have a say in what happens in your life and I can't go against that, but there's one thing I want to let you know and that is this " if Ned has plans to get married to you, he would have come for you before now". He said this and walked away.
There was some sense in what he told me but I found it hard to believe what he said. Ned has promised never to leave me for anything. But he has taken too long to return as my brother has said.
I continued waiting for him while I decided to move on with my life and go out with Donald. Although, Donald was a nice guy but Ned was still the only one I want.
After waiting for another 1 year and I didn't see him show up, I decided to accept Donald's proposal but under some conditions which I tagged as "signs".
Firstly, he would be able to know my favorite spot and know the kind of fish I ate on that spot.
Secondly, on the day he would propose to me, rain would fall on that day. The rain would be meant to usher us into another era. The rain will also wash away the memories I have with Ned; that is if it would do.
Ryan has been waiting for me to accept Donald's proposal so that he can get what he wanted from him.
On one cold evening, he called me outside so that he would ask me why I haven't accepted Donald's proposal. I innocently told him what I was looking out for.
We had barely finished our conversation when Donald drove into our compound. This time, he drove in a new flashy car, I guess it would be one of the latest brands of cars.
He sat close to me and I changed the topic of our conversation, after engaging with them for more than an hour, I left them to go and take my rest.
When I left, my brother and Donald continued in the conversation till it was almost midnight.
Two weeks later, Donald called me in the early hours of the morning and told me that he would love to take me out. As usual, I agreed on the condition that it would not be in a lonely place. I already knew that it would be the garden that is close to his favorite bar. But this time, I was wrong.
For the first time in 6 months, he took me to a place where fried fish were sold. I was shocked and surprised at the same time because I never saw it coming. The only person I told what I was watching out for was my elder brother; who has promised never to let anyone know about it. How come did he know?
Donald didn't know the kind of fish I wanted, so he quickly asked me to collect the one I wanted.
No! This is not the sign I wanted. I took two steps backward, sat on the long wooden chair that was close to me, and then asked him to get one for me. Donald looked at me and walked towards the tray of fishes.
If he can get it right, then he has scored 50% on my test. But does that mean I will agree to him if he gets it right? Well, let's just see what happens.
I sat down and watched him move around like he was looking for what I wanted. I knew that he couldn't get it right. Donald looked at me for some seconds then he looked at the fish that were neatly arranged on the flat tray. Knowing fully well that he couldn't get it, he returned to plead with me that I should come and get the one I wanted but I insisted that he must be the one to get it for me. After much deliberation between us, Donald decided to go and collect the one that was right in front of him. Guess what? He didn't get what I wanted. When he came to sit close to me he said " You don't have to be annoyed with what I gave you, I might not know what you like today but I know that one day, I will get to know it. Secondly, you don't pass a final judgment on someone because he failed a test that you have given to them unknowingly". His last words made me scared. What! How come did he know what was in my mind? Could it be that Ryan told him or was he just saying it because of sa
Was I sure if what I just saw? Was it a dream or was it reality that was playing right in front of me? I decided not to conclude yet because I really can't tell if it was Ned, besides, his mask was covering his face. I knew I was deceiving myself again. My heart knows that it was Ned I just had a conversation with, but I don't want to believe it. Suddenly, tears dropped from my eyes. I ran into the restroom to put myself together before I came out to Join others to party. Soonest the master of the ceremony stepped on the podium to officially welcome Mr. Ned that everyone was waiting for. " We have all been gathered here for the official launching of the Nora's wine that is proudly brought to us by Mr. Ned. By now, I want to believe that everyone has had the taste of the Nora's wine. Yessssss. The crowd cheered as they accompanied their response with an applause. Ladies and gentlemen, I present the face behind the Nora's wine; Mr. Ned. The shout and cheer from the crowd made thi
" In other to make Desmond to be normal again, I had to come and replace his dead sister. That's the reason you see me living here.He was given some drugs to take so that it will also help his situation, but some times he doesn't take it that's why we're worried about him. Sparkle concluded.I heaved a sigh of relief, as I watched her leave me in tears. " Till death do us apart" I said in tears. The next month was planned for the grand opening of the lost son. I was having mixed feelings because on one hand I was happy that someone was coming to live with us and on the other hand, I was so scared due to the way my husband has been acting lately. I never allowed his attitude to bother me much because i expected that from him. The long awaited day finally came, the decorations were so beautiful, everywhere smelt like a heaven. At exactly 7pm, everyone was sitted for the event to begin. We sat at the front, so i had a full glance of everything. After a brief introduction and recogniti
Nora sat on the hospital bed, staring blankly at the wall in front of her. Tears streamed down her face as she clutched her stomach, feeling a mixture of joy and despair. She was pregnant, but not by the man she had promised to love forever.Suddenly, the door opened and Ned walked in. Nora gasped in surprise and wiped away her tears, trying to compose herself. Ned's presence made her feel both relieved and nervous at the same time."Ned," she whispered, her voice choked with emotion. "What are you doing here?"Ned walked over to her and sat down beside her on the bed. He looked at her with sadness and longing in his eyes."I heard you were here," he said softly. "I had to see you. I had to know that you were okay."Nora nodded, feeling overwhelmed by his presence. She had missed him so much over the past three years. She had thought about him every day, wondering where he was and what he was doing. But now that he was here, she didn't know what to say to him."I'm fine," she finally
Susan's heart was racing as she made her way to Harris' house, her anger and frustration boiling over. She had spent years building a life for herself and her son in Italy, working tirelessly to provide for them both. And now, after all this time, Harris had caused another problem for her family. As she arrived at the house, she could hear the raised voices of her son and Harris' other child. She pushed her way past the bewildered Harris and stormed into the living room, her eyes fixed on her son, who was standing with his fists clenched. "What's going on here?!" Susan demanded, her voice shaking with anger. Harris tried to explain what had happened, but Susan wasn't interested in hearing it. She had spent too many years dealing with the fallout of his selfish actions, and she wasn't going to let him hurt her son again. "You abandoned us, Harris! You left me pregnant and alone, and you think you can just come back into our lives and pretend everything is okay? You have no right to
Ned woke up to the sound of his alarm, his heart heavy with the weight of memories. It was the anniversary of the day he made his eternal love promise to Nora, and he couldn't help but feel the pull of their shared history. He sat up in bed, his mind already wandering to the plantation where he grew up with his grandmother and where he first met Nora.He knew the plantation had fallen into disrepair after Nora's father's death and the subsequent legal battles that followed. But despite all of that, he couldn't help but feel drawn to it. He wanted to see the place where he and Nora had made their promise to each other, to relive the memories that still haunted him.Ned got dressed quickly, his mind made up. He didn't care if he ran into Ryan, Nora's elder brother who had caused so much pain in his family. He was determined to go back to the plantation and relive the memories of his youth. As he drove down the winding roads that led to the plantation, Ned's heart began to beat faster. H
Nora walked into the house, and her heart sank as she saw her husband, Desmond, pacing back and forth in anger. His face was contorted in rage, and she knew something was wrong. She was already emotionally drained from her argument with Ryan and the visit to her father's tomb, so she wasn't sure if she could handle another confrontation. As soon as he saw her, Desmond turned to face her, his voice laced with venom. "Where the hell have you been, Nora? I've been trying to call you all day!""I went to visit my father's tomb with Ryan," Nora replied, trying to keep her voice steady.Desmond's eyes narrowed. "And who else did you visit the tomb with, huh? Ned, perhaps?"Nora's eyes widened in shock. "What? No, of course not! Why would you even think that?""Because I know how you feel about him. You think I don't see the way you look at him? The way you act around him? And now that you're pregnant, you think you can just go running back to him?" Desmond spat out.Nora felt tears prick at
Ryan sat on his couch, tapping his foot impatiently as he dialed his sister's number. He needed to talk to her, to find out what was really going on between her and Ned. He had suspected something for a while now, and he was determined to get to the bottom of it."Hello?" Nora's voice came through the phone."Hey, it's me," Ryan said. "I need you to come over to the plantation. We need to talk.""Is everything okay?" Nora asked, concern in her voice."Yeah, everything's fine. I just need to talk to you in person," Ryan said, trying to keep the urgency out of his voice."Okay, I'll be there in a little bit," Nora said before hanging up the phone.Ryan stood up from the couch and walked over to the window, watching as Nora walked into the plantation He took a deep breath before opening the door to greet her."Nora, thanks for coming," Ryan said, trying to sound casual."Of course, Ryan. What's going on?" Nora asked, looking around the room nervously.Ryan motioned for her to sit down on
Nora watched the doctor leave her with what doesn't make sense to her. "How can that be the only word that can proceed from his mouth?" She asked in a whisper. She sat down for some time but after a about an hour, she rose up as she paced back and forth in the corridor, her heart pounding with a mixture of fear and anticipation. "What if you take a seat?" Sparkle asked her"Sparkle, I can't just stand here," Nora said, her voice trembling with fear. "I need to know how he's doing. I need to see him."Sparkle gently hold Nora's hand, her touch calm and reassuring. "I understand, Nora, but remember what the doctor said. Ned is in critical condition, and the medical team is doing everything they can," she said, her voice filled with sympathy. "Rushing into the surgery room won't change anything. We need to trust in their expertise."Nora's shoulders slumped. She leaned against the wall, tears welling up in her eyes. "I know, Sparkle. It's just so hard to wait, not knowing if he's going
Sparkle's hand sank into her stomach as she seems to mistakenly press the send button on her phone, her hand trembled with fear and anxiety. The piercing sound of the gunshot and the thud of someone falling to the ground echoed in her ears, sending shivers down her spine. Her heart raced, pounding against her chest, as she struggled to compose herself and gather her thoughts. She bent down on the other side of Ned's car, her legs failing to move as she intends to move from her position. Her phone slipped from her, she tried to gasp for breath as Ryan's voice followed immediately. "Who fired that shot?" He asked but he got no response. He pulled his trigger and faced his boys. "Who did?" He asked again. "You still don't want to say?" He asked, as he let out a shot in the air. One of his boys dropped his gun and raised his hands up. Ryan rushed to grab his collar"You incompetent fool!" Ryan screamed through gritted teeth, his voice laced with anger. "What have you done? You've jeopardi
At the sight of Ryan Nora froze, Sparkle stood in shock while Ned tightened his grip around the weapon, his senses on high alert. "Ryan," he spat, his voice sounding like that of a wounded lion. "What are you doing here? Nothing concerns you here"Ryan smiled darkly, his gaze fixed on Sparkle. "Oh, but it is my concern, isn't it?" he retorted,. "You think you can just play safe and think you can take Nora away from me? Well, I won't let that happen."Sparkle's heart pounded in her chest as she stared at Ryan, her mind trying to find a way out of this ugly situation. With a steely courage, Sparkle stepped forward, her voice filled with authority. "Ryan, this isn't about you. Nora deserves to be free from your manipulation and control. We won't let you harm her anymore."Ryan's expression twisted into a mask of rage, his grip tightening around a concealed object in his hand, something he hid but the shape of it looked like a dangerous weapon. "You have no idea what you're getting yours
The knock on the door made Sparkle woke up. It was Kate, she opened the door without a response from Sparkle. "What time did you get home yesterday? I was worried sick of you, Where were you?"Sparkle stretched on the bed without opening her eyes. "Mum, I had to finish up with some important things that's why I returned late. I'm fine" she muttered. Kate looked at her for a second time." We'll see to that when you're awake, it seems you didn't know what you caused last night". She said and stormed out of her room.Sparkle woke up again after three hours to the soft rays of the morning sun filtering through her bedroom window. The events of the previous day flooded her mind, and she knew she had to reach out to Ned to share the updates about Nora. she grabbed her phone and dialed his number.Ned answered, his voice laced with curiosity and concern. "Sparkle, is everything alright? Did you find Nora?" he asked, a hint of urgency in his tone.Taking a deep breath, Sparkle began to tell h
Both ladies engaged themselves in series of conversations but as as the daylight began to fade, Sparkle knew it was time for her to leave and return home. She look out the window and admired the golden hues of the setting sun, casting a warm lighting over the city streets. The realization that she had to say goodbye to Nora for now pierced her heart, but she knew she had to go."Nora," Sparkle called softly, "I have to head back home now, Mom and Dad will be waiting; you know how they are, right?. But before I go, I want you to know how proud I am of you. You've shown incredible strength and resilience in the face of trials. Remember that I'm just a phone call away if you ever need someone to talk to or if you need anything at all."Nora smiled appreciatively, her eyes reflecting a newfound determination. "Thank you, Sparkle. I don't know what I would have done without your support and understanding. You've been my strength throughout this journey, and I'm grateful to have you as a fr
Ned looked at sparkle for some seconds, he could tell from her face expression, that she was tensed but was resolved to push further with his questions. He leaned forward, his eyes fixed on Sparkle, He knew that the answers he sought may be within Sparkle's knowledge but he doubted her possiblity of opening up, but he was prepared to press for the truth."Sparkle, I need to know the truth, I need you to be open to me" Ned began, his voice steady yet laced with urgency. "Were you involved in Nora's disappearance?"Sparkle shifted uncomfortably in her seat, avoiding Ned's eyes. Her fingers intertwined nervously as she struggled to find the right words. The silence in the room hung heavy, the weight of their unsteady eye contact brought tension between them."Ned, I..." Sparkle's voice quivered, her eyes filled with guilt and uncertainty. "I did help Nora escape. I couldn't bear to see her suffer, but I can't tell you where she is."Ned's heart sank at Sparkle's admission. While reliev
"I believe that he'll be fine. We just need to be strong for him and for ourselves at this point". Mr Harris advised his family. He sat on one of the chairs in the living room, watching everyone dispersing.Kate entered her room, the weight of her emotions crashing over her. She closed the door behind her, Collapsing onto her bed, she buried her face in her hands and let out the tears that seemed to originate from the depths of her soul. The image of Desmond's distressed face appeared in he thoughtsr, his nonsensical and meaningless words echoing in her mind. As a mother, she had always strived to protect her children, to shield them from pain and turmoil. Yet now, she felt helpless, powerless to help her son. She thought about how she had lost her daughter at a tender age and how she was replaced with Sparkle, and now Desmond is almost slipping out of her hands.Tears streamed down Kate's face as she allowed herself to fully embrace her grief. She wept not only for her son but also f
"Hey boss," Mike greeted Ryan. "Why the sudden change of plans?. Ryan looked at him in an annoying way, "that's not the reason I called you here, we have to get to work immediately". He told him as he turned to the direction of the roomRyan and Desmond entered the room. The dimly lit space revealed an empty bed, the absence of Nora casting a shadow of uncertainty over their plans. They exchanged worried glances, their brows furrowed in confusion."Where could she be?" Ryan muttered under his breath, his voice laced with frustration. He scanned the room, hoping for some clue or sign of Nora's whereabouts. "Desmond, where did you leave before you followed Ned"?.Desmond, his mind filled with worry, did bother to give Ryan a response. He approached the window and looked outside. His gaze shifting from one corner of the plantation to another, searching for any trace of movement. A sinking feeling settled in the pit of his stomach as he realized Nora was nowhere in sight."She must have
Ned walked out of his father's house, heading towards the car park, but his mind was still unsettled. Since he was in the house, he didn't set his eyes on Desmond nor did he hear his voice. "Would it be wise if I ask after him or should I just mind my business"? He asked himself, taking a halt. After some minutes of deliberation, he returned into the sitting."Did you forget something?" Kate's voice came through."No ma'am. I wanted bro ask about Desmond's health. How's he coping? Ned asked. Harris saw the compassion in his son's eyes. Despite the misunderstanding that always erupt between them, he still cared about his welfare. " Desmond is fine" His father finally said, "Do you want to see him?" He asked. "Sure Dad" Ned responded. His father led the way and they followed suit, he opened the door with his key but their heart sank as they stepped into Desmond's empty room. The air felt heavy with disappointment and frustration. He looked around, hoping to find some clue or indication
