Chapter 5 Enough Is Enough

Penulis: Fluffcloud
I shot a glare at Karl as I paid. He simply took the bag from the shop assistant and thanked her, then he turned to me.

"Let's go upstairs, shall we?"

Just as I was about to refuse, he wrapped his arm around my waist and urged, "Come on. We don't get to do this every day. Consider this a chance to unwind."

By the time we finished browsing, we had bought quite a few things. Karl did most of the picking while I paid. He seemed to be having way too much fun with it.

"Babe, do you think my wife would like this dress?"

Though our close proximity made my heart race, I rolled my eyes and momentarily pushed thoughts of Sean aside.

The sales assistant had been showering me with praise about how great the dress would look on me, but Karl's comment immediately left her blushing and at a loss for words.

I flashed her a helpless smile. Just as I was about to dismiss her, Karl caught my hand and began caressing it.

"That's enough."

"Don't be mad," he replied. "Just help me pick out a few more outfits for my wife, and tonight, my time is all yours."

Thankfully, his phone rang just in time.

I let out a breath of relief. "Who is it?"

"At least wait till I leave before you start gloating," he quipped, ruffling my hair before answering the call.

"Dad? What's up?"

As I had the sales assistant wrap up the clothes Karl had picked, I heard his father bellow over the phone, "You haven't been to the office all day! What could be so important that you'd skip an entire day of work?"

"Does spending time with your daughter-in-law count?" Karl responded indolently.

"Spending time with you—"

His father's voice trailed off before he recollected himself and continued, "In that case, enjoy yourself. But when will you bring her home? Your mom and I can't wait to meet her!"

"We'll see. Oh, I gotta go now."

Twirling his phone in his fingers, Karl turned toward me. "You heard him. When are you going to say yes?"

My cheeks burned as I shoved him away. "Just go back already."

"You heartless woman," he muttered, standing up. "Let's get you home first."

As if Isobel had indoctrinated him, Sean was relentless this time. He refused to give up on the villa. He bombarded me with messages, acting like it was rightfully his.

Even Grandma started showing up every few days, ruining the good mood I had after spending a day out with Karl.

"It's just a house. Why not give it to him and be done with it?" Grandma coaxed, trying to reason with me. "Sean is the only heir of our family. Sooner or later, you'll still have to rely on him. Why make things difficult now?"

"Grandma, that's not quite right," I responded with a stiff smile.

Deliberately ignoring my implication, Grandma continued, "You're going to get married eventually… Only Sean will remain in the family."

She was such a traditionalist that she saw a married daughter as an outsider and considered a woman running a business almost disgraceful, as if defying the natural order. After contemplating for a while, I decided it was time to clear things up.

"But that house is mine," I said. "Whether I marry or not, it's still my personal property."

As though I had hit a sore spot, Grandma scowled and chided, "Sasha, you're a woman. Aren't you afraid that people will laugh at you for being in charge of the company?

"It's unheard of to have a woman running a company forever. Sean's a man, so he's naturally better suited for it. He was young and clueless before, but now that he has grown up and is about to get married soon, you should hand over the company to him. Only then can the business truly flourish.

"Don't worry. We've seen how much effort you've put into running the company all these years. We'll make sure you get what you deserve."

Realization dawned on me—this was probably Grandma's true intention. Figuring that it was already so hard to demand a house from me, she thought it also wouldn't be easy to take the company away from me in the future. Too anxious to just sit idle, she rushed over, masking her concern with probing questions. But I was never someone to be easily manipulated. Displeased, I reminded her, saying, "Grandma, have you forgotten our identities?"Grandma fell silent. She shot me a complicated look, her gentle demeanor taking a 180 degree shift as she snarled. "Sasha, are you saying that you have no intention of returning the company to Sean?"I flashed her an indifferent smile and replied, "Grandma, perhaps age is catching up to you, after all. Your memory is deteriorating. I was never obligated to return the company to Sean in the first place. Besides, no matter who runs the company, you'll always be our grandmother. So, why go through all the trouble to take it over?""Grandma's expre

Sean seemed to realize I wasn't pulling his leg, but he was still struggling to believe it. As Isobel shuffled closer to him, it took her a while to finally muster the courage to speak. "But Sean is still a Carrington. So what if he's adopted? Agnes said he has every right to be involved in the family business. Don't you dare think you can just throw these documents in his face and keep everything for yourself!""Keep everything for myself? Now that's a new one."Isobel sneered, "Isn't that exactly what you've been doing? It's always been the men who inherit the business. Your family only adopted Sean because they didn't have an heir, did they? He was adopted to continue your family line, so, of course, the family's fortune belongs to him."But now, you're refusing to hand it over. If that's not trying to take everything for yourself, then what is?"I hadn't expected to hear this from her at first. However, it was clear that this belief that women had to rely on men was deeply

  • The Wrong Woman, The Wrong Move   Chapter 8 Public Scrutiny

Isobel put on a full-blown sob story in front of the media, claiming that she and Sean were deeply in love while I was trying to tear them apart. She accused me of disowning Sean just to hoard the inheritance for myself and to stop their marriage from taking place. If it were just her—a complete outsider who had nothing to do with the Carringtons—people might not have believed her entirely. But then Grandma decided to add fuel to the fire. In an instant, I was buried under public scrutiny. "To think she's acting like that as his sister!""She's just a woman, yet she's shamelessly clinging onto the family business!""Daughters aren't even supposed to have the right to inherit their families' business in the first place. She's been living off her brother all these years, and now, she has the audacity to steal from him? How can someone be this greedy?"I calmly strolled through the comments while Agnes' smile vanished. "Sasha, the only reason we adopted Sean was to keep the family

"I'm not your sister," I said coldly. "Mom and Dad only gave birth to me. Since you can't wait a day longer, then let's just get on with it now."I had Ellis inform the lawyers and the board. Since I had already made the necessary arrangements, it took only about an hour for almost everyone to be present. My representing lawyer stated my will, and the board of directors reached a consensus as well. Surprisingly, the entire procedure went through smoothly. After the meeting was over, Sean was overjoyed. Agnes was also beaming. I began packing my things in the office after handing my resignation letter to the HR department. The door swung open, and Isobel helped Agnes in. Sean trailed behind them, the thrill still evident on his face. I felt nothing but disappointment for these people. I couldn't be bothered to put on a polite façade. "What are you guys doing here?"Perhaps because they already had the company all to themselves, Agnes actually flashed a smile at me before

I got up and shot Karl an unamused look. "Karl," I called out in a warning tone.Leaning against the table, he seemed deep in thought as he mused, "But they're already gone, darling. I don't know if I can still catch up to them if I go after them now.""Then what are you waiting for?"Karl poured a cup of tea and handed it to me. "Babe, calm down. I've booked tickets to Ostria. Let's go on a vacation tomorrow and put all these things behind us."Seeing a dignified CEO of a company sulk like a wronged husband amused me despite myself. "Doesn't your company need you? Can you just leave like that?"Honestly, I wasn't against the idea of having someone accompany me—especially if that someone was Karl. Whenever I was with my family, I was the elder sister. I had to act like an elder, worrying about almost everything. I could never rely on someone else. But with Karl, I could do whatever I wanted. I barely had to worry about anything. Twirling my hair between his fingers, Karl

Isobel's acting was laughable."Did you do that on purpose?" I sneered. Sobbing, she replied, "Sasha, how could you falsely accuse me?" Just then, Sean came back. He was now dressed in an immaculate suit, and I almost couldn't recognize him. After understanding what happened, he turned toward me and said, "Sasha, Izzie didn't mean it. Just let her go, okay?""If you check the footage, you'll find out whether she meant it or not," I answered coldly. Everything felt so horrifyingly familiar. I had decided to brush that incident off for Sean's sake back then, but now that I no longer acknowledged him as my brother, why should I tolerate Isobel's pretentious antics?Realizing that there were surveillance cameras, Isobel panicked. She immediately lowered her head and muttered, "Sasha, does that mean you're still mad at me? I'll buy you another shirt. Please don't be mad at me!"I was baffled. "Sasha has plenty of clothes. It's not like she can't live without this shirt anywa

In less than half an hour, Isobel threw a stack of cash in front of me. "Here's 200 thousand dollars. It should be more than enough to pay for those two shirts. I hate owing someone else."I sneered, glancing at the large diamond ring on her right hand. "Really? Didn't you say you'd pay for it yourself?"Looking smug, she replied, "Well, Sean insisted on it. If he hadn't practically begged me to use his money, do you think I'd even care? Listen, Sasha, he told me that from now on, what's his is mine and our child's. One day, I'll make you pay for humiliating me!"She strutted off, her head held high. Not long after, Sean knocked on my door. He lingered at my door for a while before muttering, "Sasha, Izzie is pregnant, so her mood swings are quite bad. Please don't take it to heart, and don't take it out on me either."I no longer understood how things had come to this. "I told you to stop acting like you're my brother," I snapped. "You got what you wanted. From now on, we'

Knowing he was at fault, Karl rubbed his nose and flashed me a sheepish smile. "I'll give you a massage when we get back. You'll feel better in no time."Just then, my phone rang. Pulling out my phone, I handed my bag to Karl and went to a less crowded spot to answer the call. "Sasha, you finally answered." Ellis' voice came through. Noticing the grievance dripping from her tone, I knew something was off. She had been with me since she graduated. Though she was young, she was resilient—always eager to learn and dedicated to her work. No matter how tough things got, she never cried. "Don't worry," I said gently, comforting her. "Take it easy."Sniffling, Ellis said, "Ever since you left, the company has been a mess. At first, Mr. Carrington listened to us, but after a couple of days, he started meeting with other board members."Ms. Lane and Mrs. Carrington Senior keep showing up at the company under the pretense of bringing him meals. Once the wedding date was set, the next steps were choosing a dress, finalizing the venue, and taking wedding photos. While Eleanor took charge of every single detail of the wedding arrangements, my new company had also begun to thrive with its newly established reputation. At noon, Karl came to pick me up. We were going to the hotel for a food tasting today. When we arrived, I felt a little unwell as I got out of the car.Handing the car keys to the valet, Karl looked at me with concern. "What's wrong? Are you feeling under the weather?"I patted my chest. "It's nothing. I'm just a little nauseous."He asked the hotel for a glass of lemon water, and I felt much better after drinking it. "If you're not feeling well, we can come back another day," he suggested."No need. Let them bring out the dishes."Unfortunately, today's menu was full of rich, heavy dishes. The first dish, tuna tartare, was manageable, but the next one—steak—almost made me throw up the moment I smelled it.

"Actually, if you hadn't drugged me back then, Karl and I wouldn't have ended up together so soon," I said. "But I can put the past behind me."Agnes immediately perked up, and even Isobel was mustering all her strength to stifle her laughter. Her twisted expression looked somewhat ridiculous. "Sasha, is this for real?""Of course. You can continue living the same life as before. However, I have one condition."Agnes' eyes lit up. "What is it?"Her life had been a misery these past few weeks. Now that she saw a glimmer of hope, she wouldn't let her chance slip. I turned toward Isobel. "You just need to return the house Sean gave you."She had quite the skills to charm Sean to the point where he was practically willing to die for her. As a victim of her countless schemes, it was only fair that I returned the favor. Her smile waned. "Agnes, that's where the baby and I will be living.""That place isn't even that big. I'll get you somewhere even better," I chimed in. "You, Gra

Thanks to Karl pulling the strings, the house Sean and Agnes were living in was auctioned off, and all their cars and other assets were liquidated as well. But one of my properties was already transferred to Isobel, and I decided not to pursue it further. Less than a month later, Karl placed the forcibly reclaimed money in front of me. I was just about to take it when he pulled it back. "Give it to me. Consider it your wedding gift for me."I rolled my eyes. "Keep dreaming. Hand it over."Karl raised his hand. As I reached for it, I lost my balance and tumbled straight into his arms.He pressed me down and kissed me. "Darling, I've already given you my wedding gift. Are you really not considering making our relationship public?"I smirked, deliberately teasing him. "A marriage of convenience—you said it yourself."A year ago, after Sean got into trouble, his debts were so overwhelming that I had no way out. I had no choice but to offer up the company's shares to Karl, and he

On the day of the court hearing, just as I stepped out of my house, I spotted Karl leaning against his car.He glanced over at me, and I drank in his looks. He wasn't a man with particularly striking looks, but he had a gentle charm that made him more appealing the longer I stared at him. My gaze lingered on his fingers for a moment before I looked away. "What are you doing here?""I'm here to pick you up."Ever the chivalrous man, he led me to the car and opened the door. "Let's go. I'll take you to court."As Karl and I arrived together, Isobel approached us and affectionately linked her arm with mine. "Sasha, is this Mr. Yeager?"I yanked my arm away. "Hi, I'm Karl. I'm…" His voice trailed off as he glanced at me and smiled. "I'm Sasha's friend."Isobel didn't look the least bit embarrassed. "Oh, so you're Sasha's friend? Well, Sasha really trusts you, huh? She even told you all about how she's been hogging her brother's inheritance without holding anything back…"As if r

Eleanor had set a time to sit down and have a proper discussion about my relationship with Karl. Given the current circumstances, I didn't think it was the right time. At the same time, I was worried that Agnes might act up, so I thought about canceling the meeting. "This is a matter between the elders," Eleanor said. "Even though you and Karl have already registered your marriage, we shouldn't skip the necessary formalities. It's only right for us to meet your family out of courtesy."Agnes promptly agreed. The meeting took place at a hotel under Yeager Group. Since I had just fallen out with the Carringtons, I simply nodded at them upon meeting. Though Agnes' expression gave nothing away, she actually had the audacity to demand ten million dollars as a gift from the groom, saying she wouldn't agree to the marriage otherwise."Furthermore, Sasha can't take this money with her. Once she marries into your family, we'll cut all ties with her."This wasn't a discussion about ma

I no longer believed in the grand lies Agnes spun. "Even if I were to get married, I'd make sure to sign a prenuptial agreement. Besides, that villa is my personal property to begin with. As for Carton Group, it has nothing to do with me since the day it was handed over to Sean."I had made myself clear, yet he was still unyielding. "Sasha, just say yes."After a long silence, I finally told him the truth. "I can't give you the villa."An unfamiliar, odd smile suddenly crossed his face."Izzie was right, after all," he said numbly. "You're willing to spend a fortune on an outsider, yet you won't even give me a house. Now that I'm struggling with the family business, you still won't help. Sasha, have you ever truly considered me your brother?"I never imagined he would say such a thing. Inhaling sharply, I grabbed a mug on the desk and hurled it at him. The cup hit his face before crashing to the floor, shattering into pieces. A few shards were stained with the blood tricklin

On a Friday afternoon, Eleanor called me. "Sasha, I hope I'm not disturbing you."I smiled. "Not at all. I'm not too busy right now anyway."She invited me to go shopping together, which was an excellent way for a mother-in-law and daughter-in-law to bond. I quickly texted Karl, asking which clothing brands and what kind of jewelry Eleanor preferred. His response came through almost immediately. After informing Ellis about it, I went to pick up Eleanor before heading to the mall. From the moment I entered the mall, I couldn't shake the feeling of being followed. With the crowd around us, I wasn't sure if I was imagining it. When we reached the fifth floor where all the clothing stores were, Eleanor immediately ushered me into a trendy boutique. "See if there's anything you like," she said warmly. As I was browsing, a voice suddenly rang out from behind me. "Oh my, you're Mrs. Yeager, aren't you?"I turned around to see none other than Agnes and Isobel. They showed up out

"What's wrong?" I asked calmly. "Weren't you the ones who insisted on taking over the company? Why are you regretting it now?""We wanted the company as it was before, but you gave us an empty shell!" Isobel fumed. "You set us up!"I turned toward Sean and said, "You know exactly what state the company was in when I handed it over to you. I made sure the board accepted you, left a whole team to support you, and even paved the way so smoothly that even a three-year-old could've kept it running for six months. And yet, look where you are now, Sean."You were spiteful and too ambitious for your own good. The moment you took over, you were determined to make a big move to prove yourself. The first thing you did was fire the secretarial staff and let the board down. "In just over 20 days, you've almost run the company into the ground. I must say, I'm truly impressed."Sean flushed. Agnes, of course, couldn't stand to see her dear grandson being humiliated. "Sasha, who do you think y

I glanced at Karl with a smile. Seeing his helpless expression, I chuckled and said, "Don't worry, Roy."Karl sighed. "Looks like I'm the only one who doesn't fit in here."My first meal with my in-laws was much easier than I had imagined. By the time evening came, I finally felt a weight lift off my shoulders.Setting down a bowl of soup, Karl wrapped his arm around me and said, "See? I wasn't lying?'"More than that, your parents are amazing! If you had told me earlier how easygoing they were, I might've come back with you sooner."He let out a dramatic sigh. "So, it seems like my charm pales in comparison to my parents'.""You're still the best, though," I reassured him, pecking his lips. He smirked. "Now that's more like it."…My new company officially started operating. To quickly build a reputation, I didn't turn down Karl's offer to support. After being rejected several times, he was already in a foul mood. And honestly, I didn't see why I shouldn't take advantage o
