Chapter 1: Dark Coast of Antares

It was a night in the beginning of summertime when those destined pair began their journey. Their paths in life finally lead to this moment, to a place where everything began. This place was miles away from their home and they had never been on a train this far and long, away to somewhere completely new to them.

The region of Antares was the northern edge of La Shania Mirepa island nation and many of its parts were still lush with untouched nature. The only presence of civilization were tiny lights cascading in the distance like fireflies. Other than that, there were only outline of pine trees, crags and hills loomed in the darkness of Antares, creating a mysterious, wild yet enchanting landscape.

One of the twins, Skylar 'Lars' Sykes, were looking at this beautiful Antares' scenery from the train windows with a contempt smile on his face. Despite the calmness, his heart was beating hard with overwhelming sense of unfamiliarity, dread and excitement, all rolled into one. It felt louder than it should have to him because of the silence that the other passengers had left behind.

Meanwhile, the other twin, Skylen 'Len' Sykes, took advantage of this comfortable silence. He was fast asleep with his head resting on his brother's shoulder. Quiet, wispy snore that sounded like a faint whistle escaped his rosy lips and his slender arm slung over his brother's as if it was a pillow, clutching it for safety and comfort.

A slight rattle was felt throughout the train. It mildly flickered the lamps and made a slight buzz. It was the fourth time already ever since the train set into this region, but it was the one that successfully awoke Len. Hazily, he opened his brilliant blue eyes that were identical to Lars and began to yawn and stretch. Lars waited for him to recollect his consciousness before he started to talk to him.

"Feeling better?" Lars asked.

"Yeah, my neck hurts though," Len said. "Are we close?"

"Should be there soon," Lars said. Lars offered him a bottle of water and Len gulped it down enthusiastically. He let out quite a satisfied 'ah' afterwards, like it was the best water he ever had.

They traded smiles and continued their ride in giddy silence. They were excited, rightfully so. Once the train finally stopped, they could finally live the life that they want. All the things that held them back, they freed themselves of that. This journey that they started, was to seek their own happiness and independence.

As the train approached the twins' destination, announcement of the next station stop resounded throughout the train. The twins quickly prepared themselves, double checking their luggage which were a backpack and a suitcase for each. They traveled light because they only prioritized the necessities, not personal attachments, as they agreed upon.

Once the twins disembark at the station, warm sunset - like lights welcomed them to Antares. It was way past midnight by then so there weren't many people up and about, giving the place a colder impression instead. It didn't fare any better outside the station either as the twins were welcomed by cold wind and silence there. The empty street in front of them had a row of flickering streetlamps that seemed to beckon them into the gloomy darkness.

"So where is this Angel's Snack?" Len asked as he adjusted his stuffed backpack.

"Just a few blocks from here. Let me take a look on the map."

With the pointers from the phone, Lars led their way into the dark city to find their lodging. The silence of the night made the whirring sound of the twins' suitcases' wheels stood out. There were fleeting doubts on their heart that this place was a ghost town as everything was too quiet and dark, with lights from the windows were pretty much the only confirmation there are actual people living here.

However, Antares seemed like a perfect getaway for people who wanted a simpler, quieter change of pace, and it was exactly what the twins were looking for. Antares was the first region in La Shania Mirepa to be colonized since the discovery of the island in South Pacific Ocean and the outskirts were mostly left alone, creating many sleepy districts.

Even in the dark, Lars could tell how weary the buildings were, beaten by weather and age. Most of them were just a stretching line of sad commercial buildings with some branded by 'for lease' or 'for sale' signs. There were few houses and closed shop stalls between them, some decent looking, some in various state of rundown.

"It might be too late to ask this but... are we going to be alright, Lars?" Len asked.

"Of course, we are." Lars held back a yawn and continued. "This is just the beginning. It's okay to be worried but we'll manage, one day at a time."

"Yeah you're right, we got each other, after all," Len said with a sheepish smile.

"Maybe you'll be more at ease once we get to this cool place I got us. Angel's Snack is said to be the best bed and breakfast around. Trust me, it's gonna be great!"

"Is it still open at this hour? I mean, it's really late now."

Lars casually swatted the air. "Oh don't worry about that, I've made the arrangements beforehand. I've paid the extra charge so we should be worth the trouble."

"Wow, you really thought this through, huh?"

Lars reached over and ruffled Len's blond locks to a mess. "Of course. Anything for my lil bro."

"Chill, you're only older by 7 minutes."

"Doesn't matter, still counts."

Lars and Len lightly chuckled at that, the most vibrant of sound in that silence. Those sweet exchange did more than just reassuring the anxiety of their unknown future. It reminded them of their resolve; to be together and be independent at last.

The alley that the twins took led them to a small plaza where it branched to five red brick paths. On the center of the plaza, there was a fountain on which a disfigured looking statue stood that under the flickering streetlamp, seemed almost threatening. It was vaguely humanoid, covered in moss and had a set of wicked horns and spikes on its back where the water trickled out. It seemed to succeed on unnerving Len.

It was just then when Lars sensed a surprised jerk movement from Len. Len had heard something, his eyes widened and dead set on the branching road to their left. The road was left shadowed by willow trees on each side that eerily slow danced by the wind.

"Lars, d - did you hear that?" Len whispered.

"Hear what?"

"Just listen."

They waited until the wind passed by before they could make out what was it that Len heard. Lars had thought Len probably heard whizz of wind and spooked himself thinking it was something else. However, as it turned out, it really was something else. It was the voice of a woman, singing melodiously haunting the night.

Len pulled the sleeve of Lars' shirt and whimpered. "Lars, let's go already."

Lars gulped. "But... Angel's Snack is that way, Len."

"What? No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no," Len chanted. "There's gotta be other way!"

"There isn't. Angel's Snack is just few blocks away and if we take another road, it'll take us all night circling a hill and trust me, it'll be a lot scarier there with dark forests all around."

Len whined, his feet fidgeting. Meanwhile, the singing didn't stop and somehow got even louder now that they noticed it. None of them could make up the words but there was something about the melody that just pulled Lars' heartstring. He thought it sounded beautiful, but also deeply melancholic like it was sung in grief.

Lars took a deep breath, mustering his courage to compensate them both and placed his hands firmly on Len's slender shoulder. "Don't worry. I'm here with you, alright? There's nothing to fear. Look down if you're scared but never let go of my hand. You got it?"

After a pause, Len weakly nodded. His hand clamped shut on Lars' and they marched on through the dreaded road. Lars was cautious the whole time, watching every window of the buildings around them, deep down imagining what if they'll see a ghastly face staring back. The alleys were especially unsettling, as they were lit enough to see but also dark and grim enough to think that something unthinkable was there.

Within a short walk, Lars and Len discovered the source of the voice. It came from a big building that was long forgotten by history after a terrible fire seemingly consumed it. The walls were charred, the roofs were partially gone, and even from the street, one could look inside into the depth of darkness in its great hall. Lars knew he shouldn't look, considering the possibility of what he might see there, but something felt like pulling his eyes there.

As the sky cleared from the clouds, the moon was finally revealed to illuminate the dark world. At that moment, time felt like stopping, or perhaps that was just the twins being hypnotized. Lars watched as the moonlight hit the building, shining through one of the holes on the roof to split apart the darkness inside. In the faintest glow, Lars and Len could finally make out what was inside. A woman draped in white.

The woman in white had no stringy black hair, but there were ominous air surrounding her that seemed to reinforce her spectral qualities. Her dress was completely covered and evenly white, long skirt with long sleeves and came with some sort of a hood. The moonlight glow that enveloped her only further reinforced ethereal qualities that were both chilling yet captivating. She still sang, dutifully as if praising the full moon and her voice echoed across the building that seemed to amplify the volume to be heard a block away. What was she doing there? Why did she do that? There was no explanation that the twins could come up with about the uncanny sight before them then. They were facing the singing woman's back and rendered completely still, dreading that she will turn around.Despite the twins' effort to not raise the woman's attention, the ambience was shattered with the sound of heavy thud somewhere. Lars and Len looked around but nothing seemed amiss, except they quickly realiz

When Lars woke up, Len was no longer in bed. Len had always been more of an early riser than Lars did and that day was no different. As usual, Len left some foods for his brother to have breakfast with, which were tuna sandwiches and fried eggs then. After finishing his meal, Lars opened the window to soak up the remaining morning air despite the sun was already high enough by that time."I would say good morning, but that doesn't seem right."Len just entered the room, with a big smile on his face. He was carrying several brochures."Oh, hi," Lars said between his stretch. "How's the breakfast?""It was amazing! Everything's on the buffet are so delicious! Kinda feel bad that you missed that, I mean that's the whole experience of staying in a B&B.""Well, I got more bed, you got more breakfast."Len faintly chuckled. "Anyway, what do you want to do today? I was thinking maybe we could visit the beach? It's pretty close from here.""Beach's cool. Yeah, let's check it out.

Lars, Len and Seth were far enough along the beach that they could barely see anyone around, save from some swimmers looking for the more solitary water. The high sun was descending by at the time, stretching their shadows longer behind.Eventually, Seth directed Lars and Len to a rock gate decorated with red hibiscus engravings. It led to a small brick path deep into the woods, pitted between hibiscus shrubs. It wasn't a long walk and a set of buildings was quick to emerge from all the greens. The buildings were three separate compounds, with big terraces and tribal engravings all over its columns and some walls. There were no sounds of construction, only loud concert of little animals from the forest. It was a bit alarming for Lars as he gave Len a meaningful, suspicious glance."There's no one here," Lars said."Maybe the other workers are resting inside. It's still lunchtime, I think," Seth said.A faint conversation whizzed through the hot air. It came from a different c

They looked at each other in a moment of silent understanding and nodded. They went for it.The terrified twins took off in a scrambling run, disoriented and aimless amidst the world of pure white. The voice was calm, with certain warmth of welcoming yet also with a melancholy of bitter parting.Lars opened his eyes and found himself in an empty white chamber. The room was brightly lit, like the pristine white walls were made of light itself. There were runic writings on the wall and some were on the floor, circling the entire room. The runes were alien writings for Lars and yet despite he couldn't understand any of it, he was captivated. The soft golden glow emanated from the runes felt so soothing it was almost hypnotizing him. The runes glowed in unison, in a manner that resembled a heartbeat resonance."Where... am... After being screamed at, Lars immediately went to lift the monster's body for Tirana to wiggle herself out of there. He found the body surprisingly light despite he was moving roughly an adult bear sized creature with ease and no assistance at all. Len's jaw was dropped due to either too shocked or too confused watching Lars' incredible display of strength."Thank you," Tirana said after she could finally stand up. "And thank you for the earlier, as well."Tirana looked at Lars for a while before she smiled, showcasing her pretty dimples. Her prominent cheekbones were rosy and sweaty from the earlier battle. While Tirana dusted off dirt from her white clothes, Lars picked up her spear and handed it to her. She clicked a switch on the spear's socket and the handle was significantly retracted, turning it into a rod more than a spear. She put it on her bag and fished out a fancy bottle containing turquoise tinted water."Are you hurt anywhere? You should drink this if you do."Lar

However, when Len made the call, he was informed of a peculiar instruction."What's wrong?" Lars asked."Oh, they said the dinner will be served at the rooftop table. Apparently, it's already reserved for us."Lars and Len didn't need to guess that it was Tirana's doing. They were reluctant of leaving their den but it seemed they had no choice. They could only hope that they do not encounter any friendly guests who wanted to share stories so they had to pretend like they did not just involved in anything remotely exciting earlier.Despite their reluctance to go there, Lars and Len were quickly in awe of the sight at the Angel's Snack rooftop. "Did we just... lost?"Mell's exasperated question snapped Lars back to the reality. He watched as the Grand Serpent's towering scales spread out in the distance, amidst the smokes of ruin. From them, silver colored monstrosities excused themselves into the world, causing destruction in their wake."No. We've won. We pushed him back, didn't we?" Lars said, desperately trying to sound cheerful."But at what cost?" Rachelia said in a tired whisper. Wilhelmina gave her a side hug."Let's just get out of here first, those things are coming," Vayu said.Everyone agreed to the suggestion and the Scions walked through the ruined Regulus that had been deformedly transformed into chaotic nature. There were trees grown in the middle of the street, with reptilian scale textures on their trunks and leaves. Gravity also arbitrarily nullified in some parts, leaving some debris and ashes floating."Is this all because of silverstream?" Lars asked as he touched a speck of floating dust.

The Grand Serpent spoke, and his voice was ethereally terrifying as Lars imagined him to have. His black scales resonated with silver glow that ran from his body to his head. The silverstream gathered around the Grand Serpent made Lars wary of any incoming attack. Lars thought perhaps that was when the Grand Serpent took the fight seriously.'You fought... well...'The Grand Serpent did not open his mouth, but the voice was definitely booming from him. Lars wasn't sure what to answer, so he let his Celestial Calibur did it for him. The sword streamed out a river of burning light. The slashing wave Lars emitted from it was blocked by the barrier again. This time, the barrier looked more defined and more silver. Rachelia's roses and Vayu's flames also didn't make a single dent on it. The Grand Serpent made a repeated sound of chaotic cacophony, which Lars could only interpret as a deriding laugh. Then, in the distance, they came. The Chimeras from all over La Shania Mirepa rushed

That morning, a blinding white star rose from the ruins of Regulus. The star burned so bright it took the full attention of a certain cosmically colossal creature. The star shone and dispersed the wild silver ashes in the skies. All eyes were on the star's ascension, watching it unfolded into bursting wings of light.Lars has transformed into a white armored angel with six divine wings hovering behind his back, connected by a golden halo. The armor was his own solidified Scion Force, sparkling in majestic grandeur of white and gold. A sword patterned crown rested on Lars' head, having the same royal pattern as his brilliantly burning Celestial Calibur. The Grand Serpent hissed, the loudest Lars ever heard so far. The storm of buildings turned ghastlier as some of them were caught on silver flames. Foul smell still permeated across the battlefield and Lars willed himself to not catch a whiff. By quick observation, he realized some parts of the Regulus has rainforests, mountains and

For a second, Lars thought he found a piece of heaven buried deep within the earth.Len let go as Lars made his steps forward. Lars walked to the majestic divine crystal before him and fell to his knees soon after. However, there was a relieved, happy smile on his face. He was finally to meet his savior and guardian deity in person."Hello, Alt'ma."'My Scion.'It was the same voice as Lars remembered, echoing and ethereal."I don't know if you've been watching or not, but... we are in very deep trouble."'So I've seen. In the darkness, Lars was trapped in a vicious cycle of fainting and waking up to a numbing pain. He groaned every time, making sure to himself that he was alive despite the severe agony. He also felt repeated sensation of being dragged, carried, or held. Each weren't in the nicest or careful ways as the grip always too tight and the stones always scraped too rough. What truly woke Lars up was the sight of a light. It wasn't his, but someone else's. It was purple and menacing under the dark, but Lars figured any light was a friend to face any darkness. He tried to raise his neck and felt like dying just for it. He wondered why being a Scion could still feel this much hurt.Deliriously, Lars called out to the tailed devil in the shadows. "Len...?"Len didn't turn nor answer. His gaze was fixated at an amulet where the purple glow came from. Lars was stunned for a while, thinking how that amulet somehow find its way home to its creator. He remembered leaving it on his bag at Regulu

The Grand Serpent watched the world laid before him in such a curious gaze. Lars was shuddering from the sheer size of that creature. His trembling hand found his star necklace, and its chain rattled alongside his tremors. He kept taking quick, deep breaths but they weren't as helpful as he hoped.Lars braved himself to look away, but the dread caught him by the throat to the point it was physically hurt to move his neck. He watched as the others were in shambles like he did. Mell was backing away as he looked up, stumbling to a few rubbles. Rachelia supported herself by her umbrella and Wilhelmina was on the ground next to her, leaning helplessly to the ruins of Regulus. As for who held Lars' hand, it turned out to be Vayu. Though Vayu was trembling, he didn't let his gaze broke away from the Grand Serpent."V - Vay..."Vayu's spiteful gaze was a thinly veiled look of fear, but at the very least Lars noticed a form of resistance from him. After all, he is reborn as a new god and destined to bring us the promised world."Lars looked at Magnus and then to Len. He didn't want to believe the word of a man who had been lying to them for years, but those unflinching silver eyes deterred Lars quite a bit. Lars wanted to jump down but the synchronized aims from the Sovereigns' guns everywhere stopped him."Len, don't listen to anything he says! He's a monster! He lied to us the whole time.""Lars, please," Vayu said behind him. "If we don't do something, we're gonna be dead here."Lars wanted to scream and break things out of frustration, but he knew Vayu was right. Without turning, Lars nodded and Vayu took the cue.
