When Lars woke up, Len was no longer in bed. Len had always been more of an early riser than Lars did and that day was no different. As usual, Len left some foods for his brother to have breakfast with, which were tuna sandwiches and fried eggs then. After finishing his meal, Lars opened the window to soak up the remaining morning air despite the sun was already high enough by that time.

"I would say good morning, but that doesn't seem right."

Len just entered the room, with a big smile on his face. He was carrying several brochures.

"Oh, hi," Lars said between his stretch. "How's the breakfast?"

"It was amazing! Everything's on the buffet are so delicious! Kinda feel bad that you missed that, I mean that's the whole experience of staying in a B&B."

"Well, I got more bed, you got more breakfast."

Len faintly chuckled. "Anyway, what do you want to do today? I was thinking maybe we could visit the beach? It's pretty close from here."

"Beach's cool. Yeah, let's check it out."

"Alright!" Len cheered. He fiddled with the brochures on his hand and meekly said, "while we're at it, maybe we could, you know, find some jobs there. I got this info from other guests - "

"Oh, I see what this is about," Lars said, squinting his eyes. "Len, we discussed this. I told you that I want us to lighten up and have a little fun first, didn't I?"

"Yes, I do understand, but that money won't last forever, Lars. I just thought maybe we can have fun but still preparing ourselves for the future. We're on our own now, remember?"

Lars heaved a sigh. Deep down, he was a bit disappointed because he presented the choice of going to Antares as vacation for Len because he felt they deserved it. He wanted Len to savor their moment of freedom first, although admittedly, he knew that Len was right. Lars also wanted to start sending out some of their money for his mother back home and having a job would provide a perfect cover for it.

"Alright then, fine. Let's see what you got," Lars said.

Len smiled and enthusiastically shoved the brochures on Lars. They were all about help wanted on the facilities of Lesath Beach, either full - time or part - time. Lars and Len were fresh out of the high school and 18 at the time, a legal age to work unrestricted in Mirepa. However, considering their slightly peculiar situation, Lars and Len also had consideration to not work in someplace that would disclose information to their guardian.

After Lars and Len tidied up, they went outside and met with the brighter side of Antares, a far cry from the night when they were running for their dear lives. The road, the alleys and the buildings all around looked alive under the sunlight. The colorful shop stalls also further added the merry atmosphere, especially so with delightful puns on their marketing banner such as a candy stand named 'Cottonmouth' and kebab one with 'Q - Babe'.

In the main road, the environment grew slightly familiar for Lars and Len. The traffic was comparatively decent than Algedi where they came from. There weren't any particularly too tall of a building to block the beautiful blue sky either. It was truly a nice weather when they were set out to the beach.

By the time Lars and Len caught a glimpse of the Lesath Beach, they were left breathless. The view was truly picturesque, with pinkish sandy beach surrounded by tall cliffs and there were little rock islands scattered on its crystal clear water. Myriad of bright summer colors from the people and umbrellas also adorned the whole beach.

"Holy shit that's so beautiful!" Len exclaimed. "Come on, Lars. Come on!"

"Alright, alright. Slow down." Lars could only just laugh along as he was dragged by Len.

Lars and Len walked along the beach and basked under the warm sunlight. The beach was full of people sunbathing and having a picnic, but it wasn't crowded enough that it didn't leave any space for people to playing kites, beach volley and other sports. It was a perfectly spaced out beach.

In the middle of their sightseeing, however, Lars and Len were distracted by a family they saw. The father was cheerfully laughing as his little daughter climbed him around like a monkey bar, and the mother was watching her two sons splashed each other on the beach with a big happy smile on her face. It felt heartwarming but also crushing for Lars and Len, shown by their little smile.

"Remember those times?" Len asked.

"All too well even," Lars said, "but, that's no longer us."

"We almost have that again, though."

"Yeah, right." Lars snorted a cynic laugh. "We'd be playing in jail if we did."

Lars and Len were back to their walk after that dreary talk. They asked around for any position open at the cafes and stalls along the beach but it was a fruitless endeavor. Eventually, they reached the edge of the beach and decided to stop by at the small café there.

The café had no sign name but it was still quite elegant despite its simplicity. Seashells were plastered all over the ceiling and the walls were decorated with several sand paintings. Lars and Len ordered fish and chips as per the waitress' recommendation and they had their lunch there.

"That was a bust," Lars said out of nowhere.

"I can't believe the positions are filled already. Those were recent brochures too," Len said.

"It's summer, Len. People would definitely come flocking to work in a place like this."

Len just munched on his cod unenthusiastically. "Yeah, I guess."

At that moment, someone approached Lars and Len's table. He was a tall guy and his body was very well built, shown by his gray shirt that clung so tight like a second skin. His shoulder length ash gray hair swayed gracefully by the sea wind and the guy flashed a smile towards the twins.

"Hey, I'm sorry. I couldn't help but hear you guys talking. Are you guys by any chance looking for work?"

Lars glanced to Len a bit. "Um... Yeah?"

"Name's Seth, I'm a new contractor of this beach house that's currently under construction, Hibiscus House. Have you heard of it?"

"Can't say we have. We're... new here," Len said.

"Well, it's not open just yet but we're already taking applications. Are you guys interested? I can introduce you guys to the manager after you're done with your lunch."

"Oh, that'd be great! Thanks, man," Lars said. "I'm Lars and this is my brother, Len. Nice to meet you."

"Twins, huh? Nice." Seth smiled and casually excused himself to sit next to Lars. "I suppose you two never done the classic twin switch shenanigans together, huh?"

Lars snickered. "We actually have though, back when we were kids. It's always been a blast for us watching people's reactions."

"Yeah," Len said, "but then, growth spurt happened and gave everything away so easily, took away all the fun."

Seth laughed. "Yeah, face aside, you two don't look identical at all. Which one are you who dyed your hair?"

"Damn, you got me," Lars said, "but to be fair, I dyed my hair brown quite recently though, so it's not always the differing mark between us."

Lars and Len then briefly shared their prank stories from childhood to Seth. How they once switched class without anyone noticing, acting as each other when talking to different friend groups, basically all playful stuff identical twins would do.

As Lars mentioned, however, they eventually grew different in stature and physique. Lars grew taller and more athletic - looking due to his routine in exercise and football club. Meanwhile Len, found passion in art like video games and reading, resulting him spending a lot of time indoors that made his slender, already alabaster skinned body fairer.

After Lars and Len finishing their lunch, Seth had them follow him to the Hibiscus House. They walked together to the opposite western edge of the beach where they first met. They clicked really well and joked around along the way, which was unfortunate in hindsight. Had Lars and Len didn't ran into Seth and went to Hibiscus House that day, perhaps their course of fate would be different.

Lars, Len and Seth were far enough along the beach that they could barely see anyone around, save from some swimmers looking for the more solitary water. The high sun was descending by at the time, stretching their shadows longer behind.Eventually, Seth directed Lars and Len to a rock gate decorated with red hibiscus engravings. It led to a small brick path deep into the woods, pitted between hibiscus shrubs. It wasn't a long walk and a set of buildings was quick to emerge from all the greens. The buildings were three separate compounds, with big terraces and tribal engravings all over its columns and some walls. There were no sounds of construction, only loud concert of little animals from the forest. It was a bit alarming for Lars as he gave Len a meaningful, suspicious glance."There's no one here," Lars said."Maybe the other workers are resting inside. It's still lunchtime, I think," Seth said.A faint conversation whizzed through the hot air. It came from a different c

They cornered themselves by hiding there. The door was moving. Something seemed to nudge it open, but there was nothing on the other side. Instead, there was a curtain of pure white mist that seeped in through the room. The mysterious mist was crawling across the room, unmistakably the same as previous night."Lars, what do we do?" 'Can you hear me, o brave soul?'In the void, a voice resonated. Lars could never remember how this event fully transpired and what was it that said to him. All he knew was that a voice called out to him. The voice was calm, with certain warmth of welcoming yet also with a melancholy of bitter parting.Lars opened his eyes and found himself in an empty white chamber. The room was brightly lit, like the pristine white walls were made of light itself. There were runic writings on the wall and some were on the floor, circling the entire room. The runes were alien writings for Lars and yet despite he couldn't understand any of it, he was captivated. The soft golden glow emanated from the runes felt so soothing it was almost hypnotizing him. The runes glowed in unison, in a manner that resembled a heartbeat resonance."Where... am... I?"Lars' voice echoed across the room, yet it traveled ever so slowly to his own ears. He was completely delirious, mind hazy and body felt like hot

After being screamed at, Lars immediately went to lift the monster's body for Tirana to wiggle herself out of there. He found the body surprisingly light despite he was moving roughly an adult bear sized creature with ease and no assistance at all. Len's jaw was dropped due to either too shocked or too confused watching Lars' incredible display of strength."Thank you," Tirana said after she could finally stand up. "And thank you for the earlier, as well."Tirana looked at Lars for a while before she smiled, showcasing her pretty dimples. Her prominent cheekbones were rosy and sweaty from the earlier battle. While Tirana dusted off dirt from her white clothes, Lars picked up her spear and handed it to her. She clicked a switch on the spear's socket and the handle was significantly retracted, turning it into a rod more than a spear. She put it on her bag and fished out a fancy bottle containing turquoise tinted water."Are you hurt anywhere? You should drink this if you do."Lar

Once Lars and Len were back in Angel's Snack, they immediately went to their room, took a cold shower and got changed. They were planning to isolate themselves for the rest of the night and just ordered a room service for dinner. However, when Len made the call, he was informed of a peculiar instruction."What's wrong?" Lars asked."Oh, they said the dinner will be served at the rooftop table. Apparently, it's already reserved for us."Lars and Len didn't need to guess that it was Tirana's doing. They were reluctant of leaving their den but it seemed they had no choice. They could only hope that they do not encounter any friendly guests who wanted to share stories so they had to pretend like they did not just involved in anything remotely exciting earlier.Despite their reluctance to go there, Lars and Len were quickly in awe of the sight at the Angel's Snack rooftop. In his 18 years of living, Lars Sykes had never been an early riser. He never saw daybreak nor sunrise unless he was awake the whole night, hanging out with his friends or playing video games. Hence, it was a peculiar sight for Len to woke up alone and found the bed next to him had long cold.Len looked around and noticed the room key was missing from the nightstand he left it on. It was still an hour until breakfast time so Len deduced they had enough time to pack before that and leave immediately afterwards. Len had thought to call Lars with the disposable phone he left him with, but decided not to.Something unnatural just happened to them and it was not just about the monster attack, Len knew that very well. He remembered seeing his brother's mangled body when the monster brutally tore him apart. "You're an alchemist?""That's so cool!"Lars and Len couldn't quite contain their excitement over the wondrous basement Tirana had. It was like they were kids in a candy store, marveling at everything and wanted to touch everything. But still, they knew better not to carelessly fiddled with the colorful spheres, various kinds of flasks on the table or the bubbling cauldron. They may not know much about chemicals, but they knew enough to not mess with them.Lars carefully inspected a peculiar gear mechanism on the work table. "So, does all the agents of VERSE are alchemists or...?""No, they just have a dedicated division for it. There are those recruited from military background, mercenaries, or graduates from VERSE academy like my father. I'm simply continuing his legacy.""What is it that alchemists do? How do you make all of this?" Len asked.Tirana smiled in a way that was clear that she anticipated such question. "Alchemists are the bridge between science and magic. W

Lars woke up in a harsh jolt, his head felt like throbbing. Tirana who stood by immediately went to the couch where he was laid and offered him a glass of water. Lars gulped the whole thing like his life depended on it."Are you alright?" Tirana asked."I'm not sure how to answer that," Lars said. He looked around and noticed an absence. "Where's Len?""Went out to get some food. You've been out cold all day, Lars. It's 8 PM now."Lars just stared in disbelief. He didn't remember much of what happened during the divine encounter, but he did remember what was being said to him. The experience might be quite taxing for him, but at least Lars had some answers."Does the name Alt'ma mean anything to you?"Tirana was quiet for a while, thinking. "Not at all. Why do you ask?"Just when Lars about to explain, Len had arrived with some plastic bags in hand. Lars gave him a smile for reassurance but Len rushed to his side either way. "Did we just... lost?"Mell's exasperated question snapped Lars back to the reality. He watched as the Grand Serpent's towering scales spread out in the distance, amidst the smokes of ruin. From them, silver colored monstrosities excused themselves into the world, causing destruction in their wake."No. We've won. We pushed him back, didn't we?" Lars said, desperately trying to sound cheerful."But at what cost?" Rachelia said in a tired whisper. Wilhelmina gave her a side hug."Let's just get out of here first, those things are coming," Vayu said.Everyone agreed to the suggestion and the Scions walked through the ruined Regulus that had been deformedly transformed into chaotic nature. There were trees grown in the middle of the street, with reptilian scale textures on their trunks and leaves. Gravity also arbitrarily nullified in some parts, leaving some debris and ashes floating."Is this all because of silverstream?" Lars asked as he touched a speck of floating dust.

The Grand Serpent spoke, and his voice was ethereally terrifying as Lars imagined him to have. His black scales resonated with silver glow that ran from his body to his head. The silverstream gathered around the Grand Serpent made Lars wary of any incoming attack. Lars thought perhaps that was when the Grand Serpent took the fight seriously.'You fought... well...'The Grand Serpent did not open his mouth, but the voice was definitely booming from him. Lars wasn't sure what to answer, so he let his Celestial Calibur did it for him. The sword streamed out a river of burning light. The slashing wave Lars emitted from it was blocked by the barrier again. This time, the barrier looked more defined and more silver. Rachelia's roses and Vayu's flames also didn't make a single dent on it. The Grand Serpent made a repeated sound of chaotic cacophony, which Lars could only interpret as a deriding laugh. Then, in the distance, they came. The Chimeras from all over La Shania Mirepa rushed

That morning, a blinding white star rose from the ruins of Regulus. The star burned so bright it took the full attention of a certain cosmically colossal creature. The star shone and dispersed the wild silver ashes in the skies. All eyes were on the star's ascension, watching it unfolded into bursting wings of light.Lars has transformed into a white armored angel with six divine wings hovering behind his back, connected by a golden halo. The armor was his own solidified Scion Force, sparkling in majestic grandeur of white and gold. A sword patterned crown rested on Lars' head, having the same royal pattern as his brilliantly burning Celestial Calibur. The Grand Serpent hissed, the loudest Lars ever heard so far. The storm of buildings turned ghastlier as some of them were caught on silver flames. Foul smell still permeated across the battlefield and Lars willed himself to not catch a whiff. By quick observation, he realized some parts of the Regulus has rainforests, mountains and

The white crystal resonated as if welcoming Lars and Len. The entire place was alight by swirling lights, and the air felt like they were in meadows. Though it was silent, the serenity and ambience of the place only reinforced the crystals' ethereal atmosphere. For a second, Lars thought he found a piece of heaven buried deep within the earth.Len let go as Lars made his steps forward. Lars walked to the majestic divine crystal before him and fell to his knees soon after. However, there was a relieved, happy smile on his face. He was finally to meet his savior and guardian deity in person."Hello, Alt'ma."'My Scion.'It was the same voice as Lars remembered, echoing and ethereal."I don't know if you've been watching or not, but... we are in very deep trouble."'So I've seen. Moreover, your body is defiled and I am slowly losing you.'"Yeah, it's because of those damn bombs." Lars then gasped. "O - oh, sorry for cursing in front of you."'Worry not, my Scion. It seems

In the darkness, Lars was trapped in a vicious cycle of fainting and waking up to a numbing pain. He groaned every time, making sure to himself that he was alive despite the severe agony. He also felt repeated sensation of being dragged, carried, or held. Each weren't in the nicest or careful ways as the grip always too tight and the stones always scraped too rough. What truly woke Lars up was the sight of a light. It wasn't his, but someone else's. It was purple and menacing under the dark, but Lars figured any light was a friend to face any darkness. He tried to raise his neck and felt like dying just for it. He wondered why being a Scion could still feel this much hurt.Deliriously, Lars called out to the tailed devil in the shadows. "Len...?"Len didn't turn nor answer. His gaze was fixated at an amulet where the purple glow came from. Lars was stunned for a while, thinking how that amulet somehow find its way home to its creator. He remembered leaving it on his bag at Regulu

The Grand Serpent watched the world laid before him in such a curious gaze. Lars was shuddering from the sheer size of that creature. His trembling hand found his star necklace, and its chain rattled alongside his tremors. He kept taking quick, deep breaths but they weren't as helpful as he hoped.Lars braved himself to look away, but the dread caught him by the throat to the point it was physically hurt to move his neck. He watched as the others were in shambles like he did. Mell was backing away as he looked up, stumbling to a few rubbles. Rachelia supported herself by her umbrella and Wilhelmina was on the ground next to her, leaning helplessly to the ruins of Regulus. As for who held Lars' hand, it turned out to be Vayu. Though Vayu was trembling, he didn't let his gaze broke away from the Grand Serpent."V - Vay..."Vayu's spiteful gaze was a thinly veiled look of fear, but at the very least Lars noticed a form of resistance from him. He didn't want to believe the word of a man who had been lying to them for years, but those unflinching silver eyes deterred Lars quite a bit. Lars wanted to jump down but the synchronized aims from the Sovereigns' guns everywhere stopped him."Len, don't listen to anything he says! He's a monster! He lied to us the whole time.""Lars, please," Vayu said behind him. When Edwin didn't scream, everything was quiet. Too quiet. Lars was sitting in the other room with Tirana and Vorpaltinger, not wanting to see Rachelia's 'infamous' interrogation method. He sat on the couch, lost in deep thoughts of processing what he feels about the recent reveal about his friends.Vorpaltinger sat next to Lars and leaned back, resting on her wings. Lars gave her a fleeting smile before he spaced out again, and this time Vorpaltinger didn't let him."It might seem cruel to you, but The Mandate is important for all of us mythfolks to keep. It protects us from the world too, so... I completely understand why they did it."Lars blinked. "You heard that?""I heard everything.
