Sophia
The rays of morning sunlight filtering into the room bathed my face and I opened my eyes. I stared at the ceiling for a while trying to make sense of where I was and why my ceiling had a golden chandelier hanging from it. When I regained full consciousness, memories of last night came rushing into my head. I sat up on the bed and glanced around the big room in which I now found myself. The large white-painted room was exquisitely furnished with dark oak wood paneling, dark brown billowing curtains of the finest silk and an ocean green marble floor with a tiger skin-patterned rug in the center. The light from the chandelier added more colour to the exquisite headboard of the bed upholstered in dark brown velvet material. I reached for my bag which had been placed carefully on the polished bedside mahogany table. I took out my phone to check the time. It was a few minutes before eight in the morning. “Oh no!” I jumped up from the bed and glanced around, looking for my shoes, when I saw a paper on the dressing table in the room. I picked it up and realized it was a note from Dominick. Good morning. Hope you’re feeling better this morning. You can take some days off to sort out your issues. I have informed David about it. You can also make use of the toiletries in the bathroom. Mr Jonathan would have breakfast ready for you before you go. Dominick. I wasn’t sure what to make of the note. I dropped it and sat back on the side of the bed, my initial haste dissipating. I casted my thoughts on last night, trying to figure out how I had ended up on a bed in one of the rooms in his mansion. It was likely a guest room from the looks of it. I remembered being carried by him, and how I liked it so much I slept off in his arms. A blush crept up my cheek as I thought of it. Yes, the feeling was nice, but I wasn’t comfortable with the fact I made myself so vulnerable with him. I got up after a while and after packing my things, I walked out of the room. I was heading for the door leading outside the house when I heard the butler call out to me. “Mrs Cloveland. Good morning,” he greeted. The man looked to be a bit older than Dominick himself. The grays in his hair were more prominent than in Dominick’s, but not as stylish as his. “Good morning,” I returned. “I see you are on your way out. Your breakfast is waiting in the dining room.” “Thank you, but I have to hurry out now. I have lots of business to attend to and quite a busy day ahead of me.” “At least let me pack some of it for you. Mr Farnsworth might frown upon the fact that you didn’t touch any of the food.” “Alright, but please hurry.” He left the room and I sat on the same sofa on which I slept off the previous night. I could still catch a whiff of his cologne in the room. The butler arrived shortly after with a paper bag and handed it to me. “Thank you very much,” I said, getting up. “You’re welcome, madam.” My stomach turned at the way he addressed me. “Please, just call me Sophia.” “My apologies. Have a good day,” he said and I headed out. I got into my car and took one last look at his mansion, which looked more magnificent being bathed by the morning sun. I thought about the fact that he didn't made a move on me despite seeing how vulnerable I was the previous night. It seemed as though I could still remember the feeling of those large arms of his around me, and honestly, I wish I could feel them once more. As I drove out of the mansion, I took out my phone and dialed John’s number. It rang repeatedly without any response. I tried several times more, before I decided to call my lawyer. “Sophia. Good morning.” “Good morning, Paul. Any news?” I was in no mood for pleasantries. “Nothing, yet, but I have got the police working on finding her,” he replied. “He called me yesterday.” “What did you say?” His voice laced with surprise. “He called me last night. He was making demands, saying I must fulfill them if I ever wanted to see my daughter again.” “Is he crazy? Does he know how much trouble he’s got himself into already?” “I recorded the call. I had a hunch he would call and installed a call recording app. I will send it to you to help in the divorce case.” “That would indeed be useful.” “I also want to sue the hospital, Paul. I can’t overlook the fact that their carelessness got us into this mess in the first place. How can they say they didn’t get a copy of the court order?” “Beats me too. I spoke to the receptionist and the nurses said to have discharged her. They still stand upon the fact that since they already knew him as her father they let her take him. Also, I’m guessing seeing such a document scared them. No one wants to get involved in such cases.” “That’s no excuse, Paul. They must admit it. They were careless, and I am suing them.” “Alright, but for now, let’s focus on getting your daughter back.” The call ended and I focused on getting home. I had to clean myself up and return to head over to work. It felt wrong to me to take a leave at this critical time in the organisation. My heart jumped in anticipation when I heard my phone ring from my bag. Thinking it was John, I quickly picked it up but saw David’s name instead. I became even more tensed seeing his name. Since the announcement of the merger, I had begun attributing David’s call to trouble. I thought of ignoring it in order to get home first, thinking he wanted to tell me Dominick had informed him about my leave, but I changed my mind and answered it. “Good morning, David.” “Sophia!” The sound of his voice worsened my tension further. “Is something wrong?” I asked. “Where are you?” He fired. “On my way home,” I replied. “We need you here now.” We? “What’s the problem?” My heart was pounding in my ears and I thought I'd die from the whole tension. “Your report is being reviewed by the board right now, and a big deficit was discovered. Over one million dollars unaccounted for. You need to come and explain now!”SophiaMy car screeched to a halt in the parking lot, and I started combing my hair. I looked a real mess at that moment and I had to appear before the board members. However, the way I looked was the least of my worries right now.One millions dollars? That can’t be possible. I had checked every calculation and combed through every transaction. There was no way such huge amount would be missing without my notice. I popped a mint into my mouth and headed into the building. Several thoughts raced through my mind. There were lots of opportunities for me to launder money from the company without notice, but I would never touch a dime. Asides my Christian upbringing, it wasn’t in my nature. The only attempt I had made at stealing was when I took a twenty dollar note from my mum and I was caught. The embarrassment was enough to discourage any similar act in the future. However, my morality would not be enough to prove my innocence. I had to check the numbers and see what went wrong. When
SophiaI slammed the door of my car and sprinted across the street towards the tall intimidating building. When I got in, I quickly made for the reception when I saw Paul.“Sophia!” he exclaimed. “Good morning,” he said with a smile on his face.“Where is she?” I asked, ignoring his greeting.“Come with me,” he said and led me into a hallway. My eyes widened when I saw her small delicate features seated on a black leather chair holding her favourite blue teddy bear. There was a young dark-haired lady by her side playing with her, and Beryl seemed very excited.“Beryl!” I exclaimed. Her eyes shone with delight when she saw me, and she ran towards me. “Come here, my little Princess B,” I said, grabbing her. We locked ourselves in a tight embrace, and for a moment, I forgot about all my worries and my present situation – including the missing one million dollars.I suddenly caught sight of a young man standing towards me, having no idea when he had arriv
SophiaI kept tapping my knees nervously as he pored through a document. The two men seated beside me on both sides only made matters worse for me. When I had entered his large office and saw the two men, I initially thought they were police men, and I was sure I would be arrested. However, it turned out that they were the external auditors that had been hired to check the company records. I knew I was innocent, but the fact remained that a large sum of money was missing which I couldn’t account for. I was very meticulous and no discrepancy in my job went unnoticed by me. This was going to be a big blow to my career and, worse, I could even land in jail. “These two men will handle the checking of the company’s records. You will be required to give them all they need whenever they request. They will start with the other divisions before getting to yours,” Dominick glanced up at me and said after he finished reading. “And why’s that?” I asked.“Because your division is accounting an
Sophia I swung the door open and heard a gasp. The laughter that had been echoing suddenly stopped. I smiled, ignoring the two bodies that had quickly wrapped a white blanket around their sweating bodies as I walked into the dim lit room. I stepped over the mess of clothes sprawled on the ground and fished out his suit jacket from among the mess. I hadn’t even glanced to their direction since I walked in. I picked up his pants and fiddled around a bit until I found what I was looking for. I pulled out a key, placed it in my bag and dropped the pants back on the floor before heading back out of the room. “What are you doing with that?” His quaking voice betrayed the immense guilt and shock he must have been feeling. I stopped and glanced over at them. The blonde lady trembled slightly, holding the blanket tightly around her heaving chest. The mound over the blanket suggested she must have bigger boobs than mine. But who cares? I have big boobs as well and am ‘damn hot’ as one of my
Sophia I got into the elevator trying to keep my steps as steady as possible. Fuck. Why did I wear these stilettoes? I ignored his smile and placed myself at the corner of the elevator trying to keep myself as far from him as possible. We were now both standing at the same angles from each other as the last time. I glanced at the button panel and saw that the ground floor button was lit green. A wonderful coincidence, wasn’t it? I thought. I watched as he stood with his head held high. He exuded godly confidence, something you don’t see all the time. I knew there was something about him, but I just couldn’t place my hands on what it was. Suddenly, the elevator chimed and I made for the elevator door when I realized we hadn’t yet gotten to the ground floor. It was just a couple holding each other and laughing. I had to step out of the way for them to get in, as they didn’t even bother acknowledging us. Us? I was now standing directly beside him and I held myself from glancing his w
Sophia I stared at her as she slept peacefully with her small chest rising and falling in a steady pattern under the blue sheet. She had an oxygen mask placed on her face, and the soft rhythmic hiss of air reminded me of how terrified I was speeding frantically down the streets of New Jersey. There were several emotions running through me, but the profound ones were those of fear and at the same time relief that it wasn’t as bad as my mother had sounded on the phone. “Mom, you scared the shit out of me,” I said almost as a whisper to my mum who was seated on another chair close to mine. “’What was I supposed to do?” I had never seen such a thing in my life. You wouldn’t be sounding this way if you had experienced what I did.” “It has happened to her before.” My mother’s eyes widened. “When did this happen?” She asked. “It’s been over a year now,” I replied. “Sophia, such a thing has happened before and you didn’t bother saying anything to me?” “I didn’t want to trouble you wit
I sat still and did my best to avoid his gaze as he spoke. There were four other division heads seated on the opposite side of his desk and I was number five, seated in the middle. Everyone had avoided the middle seat for obvious reasons. It seemed like everyone already knew who he was except me, and he did not bother introducing himself to us.I had never been so tense in a meeting as I was at that moment. I was so sure he was going to either demote or relieve me of my position. Why wouldn’t he? I had been nothing but mean to him. I realized why my mother had always implored me to be nice to everyone I met, but I guess what I saw in that hotel room coupled with several shots of liquor had gotten the better of me. How could the chairman of the organisation I work in catch me half-drunk the night before his official takeover of my company? He spoke calmly, addressing several aspects of the organization’s affairs without glancing much at my direction except when he commented on my divi
Sophia I could barely contain my rage as I drove to the hospital. My heart plummeted and my mind raced as I sped through the busy streets. My husband was definitely testing my patience. I hated the fact that after all the troubles he had caused me, he still thought he had any right over my daughter. The tires of my car screeched loudly as I pulled into the parking lot of the hospital. I got out of the car and dashed into the building, my heartbeat thumping my ears. I pushed through the revolving doors and hurried to the reception desk. I took a deep long breath before I spoke. “Why did you let him take my child?” I demanded from the lady behind the table my voice rising above the soft cacophony in the hospital. The blonde lady dressed in white was taken aback. “Good day, Ma’am. I am sorry but I don’t have that information. I would like you to calm down so I can get someone to help you.” I was about to raise my voice when I heard my name. “Sophia!” My mother called out from behi
