Sophia
“Where is she?” I barked into the phone. “Take it easy, love. She is fine where she is,” John answered. “You’re really testing my patience, John. Bring my daughter back to me now, or else!” I could hear the sound of my own heart beating hard against my ribcage. “Or else what? You think you can just run things as you see fit? You decided to divorce me. You terminated the contract for the imports project, something that could have given me a lot of money and now you want to take my daughter away from me?” “Well, you should have thought about all of that when you went about from one lady to the other. You don’t deserve anything form me, John. You don’t even deserve to be called a husband.” I suddenly realized that I was still in Dominick’s mansion as my voice reached a very high pitch, I decided to calm my nerves. “You don’t deserve Beryl,” I added, my voice barely above a whisper now. I need to catch my breath. “But she is happy here with me. In fact, I am going to make sure you never see her again. Remember your past, Sophia. No judge would give you custody of Beryl.” I could hear the snicker in his voice as he said that. How dare he try to use my past against me? “You want to use my past against me?” I asked. “Same way you used your power to cancel my contract.” “It was my money in the first place,” I retorted. “Well, if you want to have Beryl again, you need to restore the contract.” I leaned against the frames of the big mahogany door that led into the interior of Dominick’s mansion. “I thought your reason for taking Beryl was because you are her father and you loved her. You are now willing to use your own child – our child to blackmail me?” I almost scoffed. “Don’t try to put it that way. I love Beryl, but you must do what ought to be done.” “What ought to be done? Are you delusional? It’s my money, you prick. All the investors I pulled in for you are my people. I was only doing your miserable ass a favour.” “I won’t talk much, Sophia. Grant my requests and you get to see your daughter again,” he said. “You don’t know how much trouble you are in, John. My lawyer investigated and we found out that you presented a fake court order to the hospital. You will surely do time in jail for that, coupled with the fact that you are forcefully holding my daughter. You’re in one big mess, John. If I were you, I would do the right thing and return Beryl to me.” “I can’t do that,” he replied and the line went dead. I stared at my phone for a few moments, anger welling up within me. At that moment, I had the feeling to just fling my phone into the night and yell out in anger. I suddenly felt a warm hand on my shoulder, and that familiar musk scent filling my senses. I melted. “Everything okay?” he asked. His voice made me weak at the knees, and I was exerting a lot of strength restraining myself from jumping on him and… “Yeah, yeah, everything is fine,” I answered, standing back upright. I didn’t know when he had come out of the mansion. He moved closer and wiped a tear from beneath my eye. The sensation I felt from his touch was maddening. “I am sorry, I didn’t know you were there,” I said. “I wasn’t planning on eavesdropping. It’s just when I heard you yelling I had to come out to see if you were alright. Are you alright?” He asked again. I opened my mouth to talk. I felt like pouring out everything in my heart to him, but the words caught in my throat. I had to remind myself that he was my chairman after all. “It’s fine. You’re not obliged to tell me. But I really need you to come inside. It’s cold out here,” he said holding my arm. The weather suddenly grew chilly and just then the wind carried a curtain of rain which sprayed gently over us. It had started raining. As if out of impulse, Dominick quickly shielded me with his tall frame, and I felt him close behind me, his familiar scent filling my senses. It seemed as if I had lost control of my body as I sank back to his body, wishing he could just lift me from behind. He led me back into his mansion and I returned to the chair on which I had been sitting. He walked out of the room and returned shortly later with a blanket which he handed to me. “Would you like some tea or coffee?” he asked. “Coffee, please.” “Sugar and milk?” “Yes, please.” He walked out of the room again and this time, I sank into the sofa and closed my eyes. There was something very comforting about Dominick’s house. Initially, my plan had been to quickly come here with the report and head back home, but now, I didn’t feel like going home anymore. Five minutes must have passed before Dominick walked in some moments later carrying a saucer and a cup. “Thank you,” I said to him, receiving the coffee. He left the room once more and I took in the sweet, soft aroma of the coffee before drinking. It was exactly how I liked coffee when I tasted it. He returned shortly with a cup of coffee as well and sat down facing me. I glanced at his cup and realized his coffee was black. “I hope you like it.” “Yes, I do very much, thank you. Did you make it yourself?” I asked. “What? Do I not look like a man who can make his own coffee?” “No, I don’t mean it that way,” I explained. “I was just teasing you,” he said, smiling. “My butler has retired to bed, so I had to make it myself.” Putting on his glasses, he took the file he had placed beside him and resumed reading. I watched as he carefully scrutinized the documents. I didn’t mind the fact he was taking his time, after all, this place had suddenly seemed more comfortable than my empty house. “Do you need some time off work?” He suddenly asked, looking up at me. I remained silent, not knowing what to say in reply. “I heard a few things you were saying to who I assume was your husband on the phone, and that’s why I am asking if you need some time off to maybe you know, clear your head and sort things out.” “But I am supposed to be preparing for a training.” “That can wait. I think you should take the time off so your work doesn’t clash with what’s going on with you.” “Alright,” I answered. I understood this was coming from the chairman, but I also knew this wasn’t a good time in the company to be taking a short leave from work. There was a lot to do. I just had to figure out a way to navigate my current circumstances in a way that doesn’t affect my work. I found myself dozing after a while. I was struggling to stay awake, and the coffee did little to help me. This wasn’t my house and I cannot get too comfortable. I was exhausted from compiling the report and all the drama going on in my life. I also hadn’t slept well for the past two nights, and now my head was beginning to throb. I felt myself give in to the exhaustion. I wasn’t sure how long after that, but I suddenly felt someone lift me up from the sofa like a child. I wanted to fight him off but instead, I found myself sinking deeper into slumber as his warmth overwhelmed me. Where was he taking me to?SophiaThe rays of morning sunlight filtering into the room bathed my face and I opened my eyes. I stared at the ceiling for a while trying to make sense of where I was and why my ceiling had a golden chandelier hanging from it. When I regained full consciousness, memories of last night came rushing into my head.I sat up on the bed and glanced around the big room in which I now found myself. The large white-painted room was exquisitely furnished with dark oak wood paneling, dark brown billowing curtains of the finest silk and an ocean green marble floor with a tiger skin-patterned rug in the center. The light from the chandelier added more colour to the exquisite headboard of the bed upholstered in dark brown velvet material.I reached for my bag which had been placed carefully on the polished bedside mahogany table. I took out my phone to check the time. It was a few minutes before eight in the morning. “Oh no!”I jumped up from the bed and glanced around, looking for my shoes, whe
SophiaMy car screeched to a halt in the parking lot, and I started combing my hair. I looked a real mess at that moment and I had to appear before the board members. However, the way I looked was the least of my worries right now.One millions dollars? That can’t be possible. I had checked every calculation and combed through every transaction. There was no way such huge amount would be missing without my notice. I popped a mint into my mouth and headed into the building. Several thoughts raced through my mind. There were lots of opportunities for me to launder money from the company without notice, but I would never touch a dime. Asides my Christian upbringing, it wasn’t in my nature. The only attempt I had made at stealing was when I took a twenty dollar note from my mum and I was caught. The embarrassment was enough to discourage any similar act in the future. However, my morality would not be enough to prove my innocence. I had to check the numbers and see what went wrong. When
SophiaI slammed the door of my car and sprinted across the street towards the tall intimidating building. When I got in, I quickly made for the reception when I saw Paul.“Sophia!” he exclaimed. “Good morning,” he said with a smile on his face.“Where is she?” I asked, ignoring his greeting.“Come with me,” he said and led me into a hallway. My eyes widened when I saw her small delicate features seated on a black leather chair holding her favourite blue teddy bear. There was a young dark-haired lady by her side playing with her, and Beryl seemed very excited.“Beryl!” I exclaimed. Her eyes shone with delight when she saw me, and she ran towards me. “Come here, my little Princess B,” I said, grabbing her. We locked ourselves in a tight embrace, and for a moment, I forgot about all my worries and my present situation – including the missing one million dollars.I suddenly caught sight of a young man standing towards me, having no idea when he had arriv
SophiaI kept tapping my knees nervously as he pored through a document. The two men seated beside me on both sides only made matters worse for me. When I had entered his large office and saw the two men, I initially thought they were police men, and I was sure I would be arrested. However, it turned out that they were the external auditors that had been hired to check the company records. I knew I was innocent, but the fact remained that a large sum of money was missing which I couldn’t account for. I was very meticulous and no discrepancy in my job went unnoticed by me. This was going to be a big blow to my career and, worse, I could even land in jail. “These two men will handle the checking of the company’s records. You will be required to give them all they need whenever they request. They will start with the other divisions before getting to yours,” Dominick glanced up at me and said after he finished reading. “And why’s that?” I asked.“Because your division is accounting an
Sophia I swung the door open and heard a gasp. The laughter that had been echoing suddenly stopped. I smiled, ignoring the two bodies that had quickly wrapped a white blanket around their sweating bodies as I walked into the dim lit room. I stepped over the mess of clothes sprawled on the ground and fished out his suit jacket from among the mess. I hadn’t even glanced to their direction since I walked in. I picked up his pants and fiddled around a bit until I found what I was looking for. I pulled out a key, placed it in my bag and dropped the pants back on the floor before heading back out of the room. “What are you doing with that?” His quaking voice betrayed the immense guilt and shock he must have been feeling. I stopped and glanced over at them. The blonde lady trembled slightly, holding the blanket tightly around her heaving chest. The mound over the blanket suggested she must have bigger boobs than mine. But who cares? I have big boobs as well and am ‘damn hot’ as one of my
Sophia I got into the elevator trying to keep my steps as steady as possible. Fuck. Why did I wear these stilettoes? I ignored his smile and placed myself at the corner of the elevator trying to keep myself as far from him as possible. We were now both standing at the same angles from each other as the last time. I glanced at the button panel and saw that the ground floor button was lit green. A wonderful coincidence, wasn’t it? I thought. I watched as he stood with his head held high. He exuded godly confidence, something you don’t see all the time. I knew there was something about him, but I just couldn’t place my hands on what it was. Suddenly, the elevator chimed and I made for the elevator door when I realized we hadn’t yet gotten to the ground floor. It was just a couple holding each other and laughing. I had to step out of the way for them to get in, as they didn’t even bother acknowledging us. Us? I was now standing directly beside him and I held myself from glancing his w
Sophia I stared at her as she slept peacefully with her small chest rising and falling in a steady pattern under the blue sheet. She had an oxygen mask placed on her face, and the soft rhythmic hiss of air reminded me of how terrified I was speeding frantically down the streets of New Jersey. There were several emotions running through me, but the profound ones were those of fear and at the same time relief that it wasn’t as bad as my mother had sounded on the phone. “Mom, you scared the shit out of me,” I said almost as a whisper to my mum who was seated on another chair close to mine. “’What was I supposed to do?” I had never seen such a thing in my life. You wouldn’t be sounding this way if you had experienced what I did.” “It has happened to her before.” My mother’s eyes widened. “When did this happen?” She asked. “It’s been over a year now,” I replied. “Sophia, such a thing has happened before and you didn’t bother saying anything to me?” “I didn’t want to trouble you wit
I sat still and did my best to avoid his gaze as he spoke. There were four other division heads seated on the opposite side of his desk and I was number five, seated in the middle. Everyone had avoided the middle seat for obvious reasons. It seemed like everyone already knew who he was except me, and he did not bother introducing himself to us.I had never been so tense in a meeting as I was at that moment. I was so sure he was going to either demote or relieve me of my position. Why wouldn’t he? I had been nothing but mean to him. I realized why my mother had always implored me to be nice to everyone I met, but I guess what I saw in that hotel room coupled with several shots of liquor had gotten the better of me. How could the chairman of the organisation I work in catch me half-drunk the night before his official takeover of my company? He spoke calmly, addressing several aspects of the organization’s affairs without glancing much at my direction except when he commented on my divi
