I kept tapping my knees nervously as he pored through a document. The two men seated beside me on both sides only made matters worse for me. When I had entered his large office and saw the two men, I initially thought they were police men, and I was sure I would be arrested. However, it turned out that they were the external auditors that had been hired to check the company records. I knew I was innocent, but the fact remained that a large sum of money was missing which I couldn’t account for. I was very meticulous and no discrepancy in my job went unnoticed by me. This was going to be a big blow to my career and, worse, I could even land in jail. “These two men will handle the checking of the company’s records. You will be required to give them all they need whenever they request. They will start with the other divisions before getting to yours,” Dominick glanced up at me and said after he finished reading. “And why’s that?” I asked. “Because your division is accounting and since you claim the deficit must come from the other divisions, I will respect you and check the others first,” he answered. “But isn’t it a tad too early? Why not give us time to investigate the problem internally,” I suggested. “You were given enough time when you were told to prepare your reports. This is how we will proceed now,” Dominick concluded. “You may leave,” he said to the two men seated beside me. They adjusted their suits before exiting the office. “You really think I took the money, don’t you?” I asked after the men had both left. “All fingers seem to be pointed at you from everything I see,” Dominick answered. “I have served in this organization for over eight years. I have had the opportunity to launder money all these years, but I didn’t and my records have been clean.” “Until now!” The finality of his tone hinted that he didn’t want to continue haggling with me over my innocence or guilt. “Yes, your records have been cleaned up until now. In my experience, I have seen that people change. I don’t make any exceptions,” he said. “Why not arrest me then?” I asked. “Since people change, and you think I stole the money, why don’t you arrest me?” He remained silent for a few moments. “Why should I arrest you when I don’t have a shred of proof that you did it? You are only being investigated because you are the head of the accounting division and should know about the movement of funds in and out of the organization. For all I know/care*, it could be someone under you who did it.” I said nothing and waited for him to continue. “The date for your trip to Switzerland has been brought forward.” I shot him a questioning look. “I am being investigated for theft, and you want me to leave the country?” I asked. “That shouldn’t be a problem if you are sure you didn’t take the money. I am not scared you might run away to the sunset or something.” “Stop patronizing me. You know I didn’t take that money,” I said my voice reaching a higher pitch. “If I was so sure you took it, then I wouldn’t be sending you on this trip. Besides that, I told you I needed you to complete that training. You are one of our best labor assets in this company, and we need your brains for this.” “When do I leave for Switzerland?” I asked. “You leave in three days.” My eyes widened. “That’s not possible,” I protested. “And why is that?” “I have several things I am sorting out on my own end. I have some personal matters I am still dealing with.” “Listen, Sophia. I am tired of always hearing about your personal issues. Even when I speak to David, he keeps telling me you have personal problems you are dealing with, and I should consider them. This is what you signed up for. If you think it’s too much for you, then I suggest you just resign and face your issues.” I swallowed. “Do you even have any shred of emotion in you?” I asked, not being sure what made me so bold to ask that. “I do, but you and I also know one cannot allow emotion in business,” he replied. I began fighting the tears forming at the back of my eyes. There was no way I was going to cry there in front of him. His harshness combined with all the stress I was feeling seemed too much for me to handle. “I have a question to ask,” I suddenly said. “I’m listening.” “Last night… You carried me to bed last night. Why did you do that?” I asked. He leaned backwards in his chair. “I knew you were tired and needed rest,” he said. “But why did you carry me?” I asked. “Don’t start having funny ideas. I was only being nice, that’s all,’ he answered. There was silence for a few moments, then I spoke. “Would that be all for now?” I asked him. “Yes,” he answered. I got up and headed for the door when I heard his voice. “By the way, there’s one more development.” I turned and looked at him. “What is it?” I asked. “An anonymous letter came in by post this morning.” “We receive letters every day,” I noted. “This one is different. Whoever sent this claims you are an addict.”Sophia I swung the door open and heard a gasp. The laughter that had been echoing suddenly stopped. I smiled, ignoring the two bodies that had quickly wrapped a white blanket around their sweating bodies as I walked into the dim lit room. I stepped over the mess of clothes sprawled on the ground and fished out his suit jacket from among the mess. I hadn’t even glanced to their direction since I walked in. I picked up his pants and fiddled around a bit until I found what I was looking for. I pulled out a key, placed it in my bag and dropped the pants back on the floor before heading back out of the room. “What are you doing with that?” His quaking voice betrayed the immense guilt and shock he must have been feeling. I stopped and glanced over at them. The blonde lady trembled slightly, holding the blanket tightly around her heaving chest. The mound over the blanket suggested she must have bigger boobs than mine. But who cares? I have big boobs as well and am ‘damn hot’ as one of my
Sophia I got into the elevator trying to keep my steps as steady as possible. Fuck. Why did I wear these stilettoes? I ignored his smile and placed myself at the corner of the elevator trying to keep myself as far from him as possible. We were now both standing at the same angles from each other as the last time. I glanced at the button panel and saw that the ground floor button was lit green. A wonderful coincidence, wasn’t it? I thought. I watched as he stood with his head held high. He exuded godly confidence, something you don’t see all the time. I knew there was something about him, but I just couldn’t place my hands on what it was. Suddenly, the elevator chimed and I made for the elevator door when I realized we hadn’t yet gotten to the ground floor. It was just a couple holding each other and laughing. I had to step out of the way for them to get in, as they didn’t even bother acknowledging us. Us? I was now standing directly beside him and I held myself from glancing his w
Sophia I stared at her as she slept peacefully with her small chest rising and falling in a steady pattern under the blue sheet. She had an oxygen mask placed on her face, and the soft rhythmic hiss of air reminded me of how terrified I was speeding frantically down the streets of New Jersey. There were several emotions running through me, but the profound ones were those of fear and at the same time relief that it wasn’t as bad as my mother had sounded on the phone. “Mom, you scared the shit out of me,” I said almost as a whisper to my mum who was seated on another chair close to mine. “’What was I supposed to do?” I had never seen such a thing in my life. You wouldn’t be sounding this way if you had experienced what I did.” “It has happened to her before.” My mother’s eyes widened. “When did this happen?” She asked. “It’s been over a year now,” I replied. “Sophia, such a thing has happened before and you didn’t bother saying anything to me?” “I didn’t want to trouble you wit
I sat still and did my best to avoid his gaze as he spoke. There were four other division heads seated on the opposite side of his desk and I was number five, seated in the middle. Everyone had avoided the middle seat for obvious reasons. It seemed like everyone already knew who he was except me, and he did not bother introducing himself to us.I had never been so tense in a meeting as I was at that moment. I was so sure he was going to either demote or relieve me of my position. Why wouldn’t he? I had been nothing but mean to him. I realized why my mother had always implored me to be nice to everyone I met, but I guess what I saw in that hotel room coupled with several shots of liquor had gotten the better of me. How could the chairman of the organisation I work in catch me half-drunk the night before his official takeover of my company? He spoke calmly, addressing several aspects of the organization’s affairs without glancing much at my direction except when he commented on my divi
Sophia I could barely contain my rage as I drove to the hospital. My heart plummeted and my mind raced as I sped through the busy streets. My husband was definitely testing my patience. I hated the fact that after all the troubles he had caused me, he still thought he had any right over my daughter. The tires of my car screeched loudly as I pulled into the parking lot of the hospital. I got out of the car and dashed into the building, my heartbeat thumping my ears. I pushed through the revolving doors and hurried to the reception desk. I took a deep long breath before I spoke. “Why did you let him take my child?” I demanded from the lady behind the table my voice rising above the soft cacophony in the hospital. The blonde lady dressed in white was taken aback. “Good day, Ma’am. I am sorry but I don’t have that information. I would like you to calm down so I can get someone to help you.” I was about to raise my voice when I heard my name. “Sophia!” My mother called out from behi
I drove into the grand entrance of the mansion after the guards let me in. I stepped out of my car and the cold night breeze blew the drizzling rain over my body, sending shivers. “Here you go, ma’am,” said a guard bringing an umbrella over me. I looked ahead, the sprawling estate loomed in the darkness, its picturesque structure standing tall against the night sky. I glanced at my and realized it was almost midnight. After David’s call, I rushed back to work and completed the report. It had taken me a long while to complete as thoughts of where Beryl was kept distracting me. We got to the door and the guard accompanying me closed the umbrella before knocking slightly on the door. I never imagined that I would be standing at the doorstep of the chairman of my organization, especially not at this hour. The whole situation seemed very strange and I had never been at a man’s house at this time except for John and my ex, Nathan. My mind raced with anxiety, the consequences of my ta
Sophia “Where is she?” I barked into the phone. “Take it easy, love. She is fine where she is,” John answered. “You’re really testing my patience, John. Bring my daughter back to me now, or else!” I could hear the sound of my own heart beating hard against my ribcage. “Or else what? You think you can just run things as you see fit? You decided to divorce me. You terminated the contract for the imports project, something that could have given me a lot of money and now you want to take my daughter away from me?” “Well, you should have thought about all of that when you went about from one lady to the other. You don’t deserve anything form me, John. You don’t even deserve to be called a husband.” I suddenly realized that I was still in Dominick’s mansion as my voice reached a very high pitch, I decided to calm my nerves. “You don’t deserve Beryl,” I added, my voice barely above a whisper now. I need to catch my breath. “But she is happy here with me. In fact, I am going to ma
SophiaThe rays of morning sunlight filtering into the room bathed my face and I opened my eyes. I stared at the ceiling for a while trying to make sense of where I was and why my ceiling had a golden chandelier hanging from it. When I regained full consciousness, memories of last night came rushing into my head.I sat up on the bed and glanced around the big room in which I now found myself. The large white-painted room was exquisitely furnished with dark oak wood paneling, dark brown billowing curtains of the finest silk and an ocean green marble floor with a tiger skin-patterned rug in the center. The light from the chandelier added more colour to the exquisite headboard of the bed upholstered in dark brown velvet material.I reached for my bag which had been placed carefully on the polished bedside mahogany table. I took out my phone to check the time. It was a few minutes before eight in the morning. “Oh no!”I jumped up from the bed and glanced around, looking for my shoes, whe
