I put my thumb and forefinger on the bridge of my nose and started pacing in front of Katrina. “Pandora's Box?” That’s a fucking fairytale, it’s not real!” I exclaimed.
“No, Rowen, it’s real… I have seen it.” She replied back, stopping me in my tracks. I looked up at her, “What? You have seen it?” I asked.
“Yes, as a Keeper our job is more than just to guard the Amulet. We are also responsible to banish the creatures into Pandora's box when needed. Another reason why we are so valuable… We know where Pandora's box is, and we know how to open it.” She explained.
“Jesus Christ, Katrina. How long have you been a Keeper?” I asked her. “My family have been Keepers for generations. I grew up knowing that out of my sisters, I was the one chosen to take my mothers place once she was gone. The Others killed her years ago, and that’s when I took her position.” She said.
“Unfortunately not everyone has a bloodline to pick up their positions. If they haven’t appointed another person as Keeper in their wake, then the Keepers will exist no longer once the final two are gone.” She said.
“So what you’re saying is we have to keep this thing safe, or else risk exposing the world to whatever you Keepers have banished inside of Pandora’s box?” I asked.
“Yes, that’s the whole job of The Keepers. To banish what needs to be banished, and keep the amulet out of the hands of those who would set them free.” She said.
I walked up to her, my head was still in a daze. This whole thing was so surreal. “Katrina, I came here to kill you today. But I couldn’t go through with it… No matter how many times I tried, no matter how much I justified it. I guess my love for you, even after all these years, is too strong to let me truly hurt you.” I said, running my fingers along the side of her face where my mark would go.
She grabbed my hand with hers and pressed her cheek into my palm. “There were a few times I wasn’t sure if you were going to go through with it or not, but thank you for sparing me. I know I royally fucked up, I know... I’m going to do everything I possibly can to make things right. I owe you that much, at the very least.” She said.
I have no idea what came over me, but I was in such a state of shock, anger, and hurt, my mind was elsewhere and I just marked her. I don’t even know why I did it. She gasped and pulled away from me.
“Rowen, what did you do?” She cried, putting her hand to the side of her face where my rose gold eight pointed star sat glittering beautifully. My jaw completely dropped.
“Oh my god, Katrina… I’m sorry, I don’t know why I did that.” I said to her. “Fuck!” I said to Viper. The marks pull was so fucking strong.
The connection between us was far more powerful than I anticipated and the mark just enhanced the feelings that were already there. She was shocked at first but then she smiled at me and tried to run into my arms.
I had to stop her, and it was the hardest thing I have ever done. “No, Katrina, it’s not you… It’s the mark. I never should have done that. I don’t know what I was thinking!” I said.
“I just want to be with you, please don’t push me away.” Katrina said. “I know, doll, but it’s the mark talking. I promise you, it is.” I said, and I knew goddamn well I was lying...
The feelings were there, and they were fucking strong. The mark was making them seem stronger, but they were feelings we both already had to begin with. Katrina again tried to embrace me and I had to stop her once more.
I couldn’t do this for long. I was going to give in…
And if I touched her like that, I would make this fucking mark permanent and there would be no going back. But I fucking wanted to touch her… I wanted to do unspeakable things to her slender body. Fuck, I needed to leave… This was not going to end well.
“Brother, it’s been a while! Nice of you to stop in!” Ramses boomed from behind me. My infernal brother, always showing up to ruin my damn fun! I thought, then terror shot through my chest at what he was about to walk into.
I had just marked Katrina, and against her will at that. He was going to fucking murder me. I tried to hide the stress on my face as I turned around to face him.
“Brother.” I said. “Whoa, you look like you just left a murder scene! You ok man?” Ramses cackled. “Sure, if you can call ripping my mates heart out for being a fucking traitorous spy… Then yes I’m doing fantastic.” I said sarcastically.
“You did what?” He asked, and materialized in front of Katrina instantly, holding her back with his arm. Luckily he hadn’t really looked at her yet.
“Trust me, if I was physically able to harm that woman, she would already be dead too. Lucky for both of you, I apparently still love her, therefore I couldn’t bring myself to do it.” I said.
“Brother, I think you need to start talking, because you are not making any sense.” Ramses said. Then Katrina tried to walk out around Ramses towards me, but he stopped her with his arm.
“Ramses, let me go.” She said, looking up at him. That’s when he saw it, my mark adorning her beautiful face. I could see a mixture of emotion clouding his face.
Surprise, hurt, anger, frustration, and realization as he let her go and she ran straight into my arms. I wanted to fight it but god it was so hard. The pull from the mark was so strong, much stronger than what I had with Ivy.
I just looked up and exhaled as Ramses looked over at us. I tried to gauge his emotions but I couldn’t tell what he was thinking. I knew exactly what was plastered all over my face though, guilt. Guilt and distress.
I pulled away from Katrina, pushing her away from me after a moment. “Why, brother.” Ramses asked me. I stayed silent, I didn’t have an answer for him. I didn’t even know why. “Did she ask for this?” Ramses asked me. The calm in his voice was terrifying.
I knew he didn’t feel jealousy, but that didn’t stop him from being angry with me… And for good reason. I never intended to do this to him. “No, she didn’t even know I was going to do it. Brother, I didn’t even know I was going to do it… I don’t even know why I did it. I’m sorry.” I cried.
He just looked at me with a mixture of emotions. He took a breath in and held it for a second, pinching the bridge of his nose.
“Look, brother, I’m trying not to be mad here. You know I would share her with you anytime, all you had to do was ask... But you did the literal only thing you promised you would never do. You took her choice away, and chose her decision for her.” Ramses said, in a tone that was more harsh than I think he realized.
I swallowed back the tears that were starting to form. “I know. I did do that, and I have no excuse.” I said, accepting responsibility for my actions. “I never should have come here. I’m sorry, Katrina.” I said to her.
“She looked at me with longing in her eyes. I knew that was just the marks pull, pushing her towards me. She fought it, and then turned her back to me and walked into Ramses’ arms.
“God, I’m such a fuck up.” I said to Viper.
“Rowen, I think you need to leave. We can figure this out once the mark has faded from her skin, until then you should go.” Ramses said, and Katrina reluctantly nodded her head at me.
I exhaled. “You’re right. Ramses, and I will go… But Katrina has a lot she needs to catch you up on… Once my mark has faded, please come find me. We have a dilemma to resolve, a very large one. And Obviously, I’m just not in the right state of mind to figure things out right now.” I said to my brother. Then, with one last glance at Katrina, I materialized home.
Aries had cleaned my home perfectly. There was no mess, no inkling that anyone had been murdered here. But the pain of losing Ivy was really starting to hit me now, as I walked through my home… Our home.
Her decorations she added to try and make it not so gloomy here. The dishes she picked out for the kitchen. The throw blanket over my couch. The photos of us strewn about my home… Each thing I saw that belonged to her, or was here because of her made my heart hurt that much more.
I didn’t even want to go into our room, look at her things, her clothes… It was too much to bear. “Fucking Traitor!” I screamed, taking a photo of us from the hallway wall and shattering it on the floor.
Then I snapped to clean up the mess, discarding the photo. The marks pull to Katrina was also bothering me, even thousands of miles away.
“Ugh, this house feels like a prison. I need to get out.” I said to Viper. “Let’s go, we can go anywhere, let's just go.” Viper said. I didn’t even shower, but I changed into a black and rose gold suit. I discarded my blood soaked one and headed out the door.
Chapter 7 I had no idea where I was going to go, but I just knew the memories were too much. I wanted them gone, all 176 years of them. Where is Haven when you need her? I thought to myself, silently snickering. I knew she was long dead by now. But the thought of her being Human with no powers and obsessed with my brother, but never able to get to him, was hilarious. I really could have used her memory erasing powers right about now. I wanted every memory I ever had of Ivy, fucking gone. I was walking along the trail that lined my property through the forest. “I wish I never fucking remembered she existed.” I said out loud. I smashed my fist into the nearby tree, shattering a chunk from its trunk. I kept walking aimlessly, lost inside my own thoughts when I ended up outside of my territory. I was in Lucians territory now. Not that I wasn’t allowed here, I just chose to stay away, for the most part, whenever possible. In his territory, Vampires walked the streets freely with th
Chapter 8I walked with my new pet up to the counter to collect her things. She had three outfits, another leash that was hot pink and not bloodstained, and a small black journal type book. They handed me her things in a bag, and then had me sign her paperwork letting me know that the official ownership record would arrive at my house within a week. I took the bag and I left the pet shop without saying another word to the man behind the counter. “Sooo, what now?” Viper said in my mind. “That is a good fucking question, this was clearly an impulse buy…” I replied, unsure of what to actually do now. I mean I couldn’t let her go… If the Vampires caught her again she would be punished for disobeying her master. She couldn’t go live a normal life because all the pets are chipped, and GPS tracked so they can always be located. And with the pets, they have to be seen monthly by the pet doctors and they would know if she didn’t show up. So because of my treaty, I had to keep her now that I
Chapter 9I sat on my couch just buried in my thoughts. I kept going back to Katrina and how I marked her. I felt so damn bad for it. I literally I don’t even know what the fuck I was thinking. But I realized that since I did it, this was only the first or second time I really thought about her. If I kept busy like I had been all day today, It was easy to ignore the marks pull. The pull for me was only really strong within proximity. Where I lived thousands of miles away it was almost non-existent. Now Katrina would also feel a decrease in intensity due to my distance, but she would still struggle and want to find me. That is how the mark worked. The same way it burns when she is around another man, but it doesn’t for me when I’m around other women. It’s a one sided thing. It was made that way. This might not be so bad. I mean I was honestly good and I thought I was over Katrina until I saw her again. Then I lost my shit. Not to mention I was already in a mood from killing my mate.
Chapter 10After dinner we headed up to bed. I walked with my pet to her room. She turned to me before she went inside. “Thank you.” She said. I nodded at her. “I can trust that you will not try and run, correct?” I asked. “No I won’t.” She said. “Good, because you do not want to test me. I can be anywhere you are within an instant. It would be pointless to try and flee.” I said. She nodded at me, then she turned around to walk inside but stopped again. She seemed like she wanted to turn around but didn’t at the same time. Then she finally did. I raised an eyebrow at her waiting for her reply. “Rowen. Do you plan to feed from me?” She asked timidly. I could smell her fear. “I do…” I said, and then paused as her fear increased. I could hear her heartbeat spike. “But I promise I will not hurt you when I do.” I said. This seemed to calm her down some, but the fear was still evident in her eyes. Humans rarely ever made contact with supernaturals. It was ingrained in their every being t
Chapter 11(Ambrosia)After dinner my master walked me up to my room. I turned to him before I went in to tell him thank you. He healed my body, took away my scars, provided for me, fed me, and was gentle in most aspects of everything he did for me. I even had my own room. I had so much to be thankful for and I wanted to make sure he knew that I was. He nodded back in response. “I can trust that you will not try and run, correct?” my master asked me suddenly. I scoffed internally, there was no way I was attempting to run. He would kill me so fast, it would be too easy for him even. “No I won’t.” I said. “Good, because you do not want to test me. I can be anywhere you are within an instant. It would be pointless to try and flee.” He said. He was absolutely right and I knew it. Plus, I didn’t even know how to get back downstairs. I would just get lost in this place anyways. I nodded to him and turned to walk into my room but then I stopped. The question I was the most nervous about,
Chapter 12I finally got enough courage to speak. “W-will it hurt?” I asked, trying to hide the tears welling up in the back of my eyes. “Not like what you’re used to.” He replied. I tried to remember the shit they ingrained into my brain in the pet store. I had to be a good pet, obedient, and listen to my master. And when it was time to feed, I had to hold still and relax. The calmer I was, the less pain I would endure. I knew that to be true because I tested it out while they were continually feeding from me. Thrashing and jerking away caused them to grip harder and sometimes their fangs would rip the skin instead of pierce it. The calmer the better… But you tell that to my ever beating out of my chest, heart. I finally gathered what was left of my composure. “You’ve been kind to me in every other aspect. While this scares the shit out of me, I will cooperate.” I said quietly, trying to hide my flowing tears. I scooted closer to Rowen, knowing it would be better for him if he did
Chapter 13(Rowen)I woke up in the morning and I still had my arms tightly around Ambrosia. I released my grip some, but she was still asleep, so she didn’t notice.I slowly got up and headed into the bathroom, surprising myself when I looked into the mirror to see my eyes were a strange tint of red and rose gold mixed. The red was light, but I could see it.“What the?” I said to Viper. It had to be a Vampire thing. I knew the Vampires eyes turned red when they fed or when they were in certain situations, but mine never had, that I knew of.Come to think about it, I had also never felt the rush and excitement and stalking my prey like I did last night. And I also never felt the urge and pull of my Vampire side this strongly. The only difference is I had Ambrosia now, I had a pet..It was like it was pulling my Vampire side out, where it was mostly dormant before. Maybe I never needed a reason to have it out before, but now, with a pet, I did. That might be why Ambrosia looked so stunn
Chapter 14I listened for her heart rate change, and sure enough the fear was there. It made me giddy. I didn’t need to feed, I wasn’t feeling like I needed to, but I wanted to. It was a different feeling, not the itchy, scratchy teeth and throat… But more of a just… Want to feed. I can’t explain it. If I didn’t feed, nothing would happen. But I could if I wanted to. This new Vampire stuff was strange and would take some getting used to, that was for sure. Once we were done eating we headed out to the foyer. I needed to mind link my brother real quick to let him know we were coming. “Ramses?” I said through the link. “Rowen, what is it? Are you ok?” He asked a little frantically. Katrina must have filled him in on The Others, and since I'm the one with the amulet, then I'm one in the danger. “Oh, yea, everything is fine. I need to come visit you and Katrina. I am in a much better state of mind… And I owe you both an apology. A sincere one.” I said. “Oh? Well her mark isn’t gone yet
Chapter 51“I-I didn’t know!” I shouted, trying to convince them. “It makes sense now, it’s how you have magic. It’s why no one has come looking for you. They can’t get in here when you have the only key that opens this Box.” Andres said. The playful, boyish tone he once carried was completely gone from his voice. Rather than sounding like a 19 year old boy, he had the husky voice and powerful tone of someone who had lived a millennia. I instantly panicked. I had to try and play this off or I was going to be killed right here, right now. “I don’t have a fucking amulet, you would have seen it on me by now if I had it! I’ve been here for months!” I huffed, trying to defend myself, but not sound too guilty. They didn’t need to know that it was cloaked in magic, that could stay a secret. But I wouldn’t be lying if they searched me because they would never find it. I looked at Dominik, his face was hard and unyielding. It reminded me of when I first came here, the look he gave me when I
Chapter 50I tuned back to the conversation that Dominik was having with his brother Andres. We were in town getting an array of items on the shopping list for Hilda, and it was taking quite a while. We had to go to like five stores and collect a plethora of items from each one. This list was at least triple the size of that list Dominik and I had gotten last time. That's why all three of us went, it was going to be a while. I don’t even know what they were arguing about, but they started punching each other and I just laughed because I was totally confused. These two did not act like they were both millennia or more old Angels. They acted like kids my age, and I got a crack out of it every time I noticed it. How can someone so old, still seem so young? Well, two people at that? It was insane. Once they were done punching each other they called a truce and we entered the next store. Once we got everything we needed it was finally time to be done. We started heading back to the hous
Chapter 49“Amuletum dicimus contradixerit tibi adduc velatos te et domum tuam. Tu nos iubes?” The Witches started chanting. I was impatiently waiting, but nothing seemed to be happening. They continued chanting and a green light appeared above them for a split second and then it was gone. But it sent an energy blast that flung books off the shelves in my library. It also knocked the three Witches back, breaking the circle and stopping the chanting. Katrina looked up at me from the floor. “I’m sorry, Rowen. It didn’t work. The amulet isn’t reachable by magic.” She said. I sighed out loud. “What do we do now?” I asked, eager to get any reply that would bring Ambrosia home. “I-I don’t know… Wait!” Katrina cried. My eyes shot up to Katrina, waiting for her to talk. “Give me something sharp, I need to cut myself.” She said, holding her hand out. I raised an eyebrow at her, but did as she asked and snapped to produce a very sharp but dainty knife, and handed it to her. “Shadows, I summo
Chapter 48(Rowen)The Vampires were of help, they did let us know the location they planned to take Ambrosia, which was different from the warehouse location we had already gotten out of them. We sent our armies to infiltrate both locations and came up empty handed. Ambrosia was not located at either of the locations, but we did manage to take out some more of The Others. Luckily, we were able to get some of the other plans they had stored away as well. Apparently, their operation was a lot bigger and deeper seeded than we expected. They had a lot more plans than just opening Pandora’s Box. These guys were like one of those damn cults on crack. They have locations scattered throughout Rome, and even in the states. It’s insane how deep their seeds go. It had been 12 days, and we hadn’t gotten an inkling as to where Ambrosia could be. I knew she was alive, I could feel her presence anytime I tried to materialize to her, but she was just out of reach. It was the strangest thing. “Br
Chapter 47 I had no idea when I dozed off, but thankfully I didn’t dream at all. I have no idea how long I slept, but when I woke up I was curled up next to Dominik. He had his arms around me and his head was resting on top of my head. We were in the same position we ended the night in with our feet on the footrest. It took me a moment to register where I was and what I was doing before I suddenly realized and moved out of his grasp. I didn’t say anything to him, but he started laughing when he woke up and realized what was going on. “You don’t have to run away, I don’t bite.” He cackled. I just laughed. Ok, so he wasn’t mad. How did we fall asleep like that anyways? At least I got some sleep… That was all I could think of. I could smell breakfast cooking and realized that we were the last ones to be awake. My cheeks turned red when I realized that everyone in the house had to have seen us this morning because they had to pass through the living room to get to the kitchen. No
Chapter 46“Come sit down, child.” The older woman said, motioning at an empty spot on the couch next to the dark haired man. I reluctantly walked over and I could feel his eyes, well, both of theirs, trained straight onto me. I just tried to ignore it. I had no idea what type of creatures they were, but honestly, I was afraid. The second I took my seat an intense feeling of doom settled into my chest and stomach. I was used to feeling fear around supernatural creatures. I was Human, it was normal for me. But this was so much worse, so much more intense. I knew he could tell I was afraid by the way I was acting. I was trying to keep my cool but It was exceedingly difficult. Neither of the angelic men said a word to me at first. They kept their eyes trained on me though, as if I was going to do something crazy. “You’re a pet?” The dark haired one finally said, breaking the awkward silence. My hand went straight to my collar that I just now noticed was still on. They never removed i
Chapter 45Ramses came back soon after letting me know he checked on Katrina and Jade. They were both asleep and he didn’t bother waking them. He would bring them over in the morning. He then proceeded to pace next to me. “Talk to me brother, think out loud. Let’s work on this together.” He said. Ramses was always my closest brother. We just got along so well, and he understood me on a lot of levels, it felt like. Not that my other brothers didn’t, but I was just never as close with them as I was Ramses. I could relate to all of them though. I had my fair share of cool and calculated moments like Raphael, or my unyielding fiery moments like Raziel. I could be a jokester and life of the party like Ramses, or I could be quiet and reserved, hidden in the background, more like myself. The way that I was, was really dependent on the moment. Right now, I was fiery and unyielding on the inside, yet quiet and reserved on the outside. A fitting set of emotions for what I’m going through. Ma
Chapter 44(Ambrosia)I became aware of my surroundings slowly. But when the memories of last night started to come back through my mind, I tried to act like I wasn’t awake yet. I wanted to feel out where I had been taken, before I just announced to the world that I was awake. I kept my eyes shut and just listened, trying to keep my breath as calm and slow as it had been. I wasn’t sure if there were Vampires here, and they would hear my heart beating faster if I started to panic. It felt like I was lying in a bed of some sort. I could feel covers over my torso and I was at a comfortable temperature. So that was a good thing, right? I noted the smell of something cooking. I had no idea what it was. Something I had never smelt before, but it smelled like It would be good if I were to eat it. My stomach grumbled just then and gave away my position. I tried not to panic but I couldn’t help it. My heart rate spiked and a soft voice infiltrated my ears. “Ah, good, you’re awake. I was wo
Chapter 43I threw green fireballs and the first three that were heading my way, knocking them back into the wall behind them. This caused pictures to come crashing down from the wall above them. Glass shattered as they fell and skid across the floor in all directions. I then took one in a green fireball and snapped his neck, tossing his body aside. He wouldn’t actually die unless I decapitated him. He would wake up, but it wouldn’t be for a few hours. The other two were unconscious on the floor so I left them there and proceeded to use magic to pick up my dining table and slam it into the next two Vampire Hybrids that walked through my kitchen door. The act shattered my table, sending wood splinters flying through the air and into the walls. Then I heard chanting in Latin. I turned to see two Vampires raising the dead. “Fucking Necromancer Hybrids?” I snarled to Viper. “What in the fuck are The Others doing?” Viper hissed. “That is a good fucking question.” I huffed as I snapped t
