It might have been my imagination, but I swore I could smell him on me. Only males are supposed to be able to detect a claim like that though.

It was an odd feeling that I couldn't describe. But anxiety tugged at my stomach as I walked beside Xavier.

He hadn't left my side since our encounter with Laian, if that was even an appropriate way to describe it. It was supposed to be just business—it was just to keep me safe—but it felt like so much more than that.

It felt like he wanted more. It felt almost like something sacred had happened.

I wasn't very experienced or educated in those kinds of things, but I knew that there wasn't supposed to be anything special about laying a claim on someone. At least there wasn't in my old pack.

"What's on your mind little wolf?" Xavier asked.

I had been so lost in my thoughts that I didn't notice when we stopped walked. I looked around at the training grounds with my eyebrows scrunched up in confusion. "What are we doing here?"

I knew the 'worst day of your life' was supposed to be relative, but, what would you call it when every single day seemed to be the worst day of your life? Normal, I guess. His slap left a harsh sting across my cheek. I fell back hard onto my tailbone, pressing my hand to my face to relieve some of the burning. My eyes were watering but I blinked back the tears. He hated it when I cried. "I apologize Gamma, it won't happen again," I gritted out, locking my eyes onto his shoes. My head was bowed so low that my neck was starting to ache. "I know it won't," he sneered. He grabbed a handful of my hair and yanked me upward. I cried out at the pain that shot through my scalp; my hands grappled with his to relieve some of the pressure but he was moving too fast. I struggled to stay standing as he dragged me through the hallway of the pack house. Tears ran down my face as I put pressure on my foot—there was no way it wasn't broken at this point. My eyes flew wide when we approached a he

"You stupid slut, why haven't you died already?" It took everything I had to not roll my eyes at the way she flipped her hair. It was like she thought talking to an omega made her superior somehow. I clenched my jaw and turned away, desperately trying to ignore her and her ridiculous posse of wolves. I made it only a few steps before someone grabbed my arm. I turned, then a hand cracked across my face. My butt hit the linoleum floor and I heard the cafeteria go dead silent. I felt my lip split open and a strangled gasp escaped my throat. I looked up to see our future Alpha glaring at me distastefully. My hand flew up to touch my bleeding lip and I crawled back a little, fear pounding through me. "How dare you disrespect your future Luna?" he snarled. I immediately dropped my gaze to the floor and bowed my head deeply in submission. "I apologize Alpha, and Luna for my disrespect," I whimpered, his presence making my shoulders hunch over in defeat. "Now make yourself scarce before

The second the bell rang, I rushed out of the classroom. I darted into the girls' bathroom, praying he was not mad enough to follow me. I sat down on the floor and hugged my knees to my chest. I buried my face in my knees and took deep breaths to try to calm myself. "Did you really think hiding in here would work?" The terror siezed me completely and suddenly I couldn't stop shaking. "Liam, please don't," I whispered, my voice breaking. "You are a pathetic, worthless omega, you deserve everything I give you!" He snarled, grabbing my hair and yanking me to my feet. "You took everything from me, you're the reason they're naming Derek tonight and not me!" "They were my parents too, it isn't my fault they're gone," I sobbed. He smacked me hard across the face and my cries grew louder. I tasted blood in my mouth and gagged. He let go of my hair but not before shoving my head against the tile wall. "It is your fault, you were the one who killed them." I could barely see and I was on

"You ready to tell me what the hell they did to you in that pack?" Alpha Harke asked me for the third day in a row. "No," I replied and shoved a forkful of eggs into my mouth. I nearly moaned at the taste. It was delicious, but I could only eat a few bites before I was full. "Roxanne you have to tell me eventually," he urged. My nose wrinkled. "Fine," I growled, roughly tossing my fork onto my plate. I stood up and put my dishes in the sink before sitting down on the couch. "Alpha Harke—" I started to say as he sat down beside me but he cut me off. "Just call me Xavier," he chuckled, a small smile on his lips. "Sorry, Xavier, look I—" I paused, rubbing my temples with a groan of frustration. "I have no idea how to talk about this. It's a really long story and it doesn't make much sense." He leaned over to rest his elbows on his knees. "Just start at the beginning Roxanne, I have all the time in the world right now. I just want to know who you are and why you were trying to escap

"Ow! Daniel that fucking hurts, cut it out!" I growled, swatting his hand away from my leg. "Well sorry, I need to check how well it's healing. And since it still hurts I'm guessing it's not healing as fast as Sara hoped," he muttered. I glared at him and stood up from the couch. He immediately moved to help me but stopped when I growled at him. "I can walk just fine on my own," I snapped and he raised his hands up in surrender. "Calm down Rox. What's up with you? You've been really short with everyone for the past few days, what's wrong?" He asked gently. "It's my wolf," I admitted. "Is she bothering you?" He asked. I bit my cheek as my mind veered back to all those years ago, the day I shifted for the first time. "He." "What?" He looked at me with eyes full of confusion. "My wolf's a he," I told him. "Does Xavier know about this?" Daniel asked and I shook my head. "You realize you're going to have to tell him, right?" I nodded slowly, letting out a tired sigh. "Ye

I slammed my head against the stone floor as hard as I could. The pain that immediately bloomed across my forehead was nothing compared to the agony ripping through my skull and tearing down my spine. A scream escaped my lips, tears relentlessly streaming down my face. "Please," I sobbed, "Just make it stop." I clawed at my head, desperately willing the pain to end. "Roxie, stop fighting it." I looked up at Xavier; he was kneeling in front of me, his face screwed up in pain as he watched. "Make it stop please," I begged. I could barely breathe. "Just stop it please, I can't do this." He held my face, his thumb gently running along my skin. "Come on little wolf, you're so close this time, I can't force you through this again." He pressed a kiss onto my temple and another sob racked through my chest. "I wish I could take the pain away, I'm so sorry Roxie." He said he would do this as many times as I asked him to, but the tortured look on his face told me it might kill him to do it e

If Xavier walked in, he would see everything. The steam slightly obscured the view through the glass shower door a little but I still found myself glancing over every few seconds. He just turned on the water and then disappeared, leaving me to strip down and scrub the blood from my skin by myself. I had no idea how to describe the feeling that had settled in my stomach. I was so worried he'd come back but I was also a little disappointed that he left so quickly. What did you expect him to do? I paused a little at the sound of my wolf's voice in my head. Well I don't know, he sounded like he was going to help me clean the blood off, I murmured. If you didn't seem more frightened than a cornered rabbit, then he might have, he scoffed. Ouch. "Roxanne?" My head snapped up and I covered myself in panic but Xavier was still outside the bathroom. "Yeah?" I called. "You okay in there? It's been almost 40 minutes." I bit my cheek. They're everywhere. I can smell them and feel them―oh my Goddess. I could hear snarling and shouting and the sound of snapping bones. My skin was crawling under their rough hands. They left sticky trails of blood behind and the sensation forced bile into my throat. "Help me please," I sobbed but a firm hand curled around my arm just as the words left my mouth. My pulse throbbed in my temples and my fingers were going numb. I flailed, desperately trying to get the hands off but they just kept grabbing. It felt like I was drowning. A hand firmly gripped my jaw and the growl that sounded as my head was forced upwards startled me. I jolted, the rogues' hands disappearing almost instantly as my eyes snapped open. My chest was heaving and I felt like I couldn't get enough air in but it didn't matter. They were gone. "Roxanne? You with me?" The moment the pack doctor cleared me, panic flooded my mind and set my heart racing. My hands were so sweaty, I kept wiping them off on my pants every few minutes as I made my way out of the hospital.Everyone was outside. It was an absolutely beautiful day, not too hot or too cold this time. It felt so much calmer than the chaos in my mind and it made it seem that much worse.I didn't know what scared me more: Derek coming to the pack and finding out that I was still alive or being claimed by a man I barely knew. One was certainly preferable, but I'd rather just keep going the way I have for the last few weeks. It went by in a bit of a blur. One moment I was walking into Xavier's house, my mind set on scouring the library, and then next I was waking up on the couch. My eyes snapped up to my alpha hovering over me with concern in his eyes. He slowly moved his hand away from my arm and stood fully. "Are you alright? I wasn't expecting to find you home yet," he said.I blew out a heavy

Xavier "I'm not sure she'll ever be comfortable around me again." He snorted derisively. "Oh, don't be dramatic, that girl has seen more shit than maybe even you. She's not going to tuck her tail between her legs and run for the hills just because she saw what you're capable of." "She knows I can do even worse than that; she knows I was holding back to protect her," I muttered. "So what?" I clenched my jaw. "So? Daniel, she's terrified of me now. I attacked her. I hurt her. She won't trust me anymore and with everything that's happening with her old pack, that's dangerous," I growled. "I need her to trust me. She is so much more powerful than anyone realizes and if her former mate figures it out, then he'll do whatever it takes to get her by his side." "You really think so?" I throw him a hard glare. "Yes, I really do." A sharp knock forced my attention to the door. A familiar scent crossed my nose. Laian. I closed my eyes and slowly let out a heavy breath, desperately trying t

“How are you feeling?” I sighed. “Like I challenged my alpha, and lost,” I mumbled with a groan as I shifted on the bed. Laian laughed, nodding his head. “Yeah, I bet. I’ve fought Erys before, your wolf is stupidly brave,” he commented. The corner of my lip quirked up as he settled himself in the chair beside my bed. “Is that his wolf’s name?” He nodded again. “Mine’s name is Luka. What about yours?” “Aetrix.” His eyebrow popped up. “That’s a curious name for a female,” he commented, his gaze questioning. It was my turn to nod. “He’s male, not sure why but that’s our guess on why he’s so difficult to control. He went on a killing spree after I shifted for the first time, so I never shifted again.” “Until you got here?” “Yeah, pretty much. And now it’s a problem because Xavier has barely been able to keep my wolf subdued even though he’s still really weak. I’m scared,” I admitted. Laian offered me his hand. I carefully took it, feeling my heartbeat calm a little. “To be fair,

He shushed me gently, cradling me in his arms as he settled onto the bed. It took me a while to stop sobbing; I know Xavier was trying to soothe me but it almost made me cry harder. "You're safe here, I'm not going anywhere I promise," he kept whispering in my ear, smoothing down my hair. I wanted to believe him but I knew it would just get me hurt. He'll leave or hurt me eventually. Everyone does. "I'm sorry I left without telling you this morning. I thought it would be better to let you sleep instead of bombarding you with that kind of information." "It scared me," I admitted, my throat raw and my voice hoarse. His arms tightened a little and he pressed a long kiss onto my head. "That was my mistake, little wolf, it won't happen again," he said. His dipped his head down to catch my gaze. "And it's okay if you don't believe that yet." "I'm trying," I told him. That was the truth. Every part of me screamed not to trust him but I still wanted to deep down. It was so unbelievabl

For the first time in over a week, I woke up alone. A frown crept onto my face as I listened for any movement in the bathroom, but Xavier wasn't even upstairs—it didn't even sound like he was in the house. My stomach twisted. There were a million possible reasons he left before I woke up, but I couldn't stop focusing on the fact that it hadn't happened before. Every day he would wake me up and tell me if he had to leave, he would even ask if I wanted to go with him. I slipped out of bed and trudged to the bathroom, regretting my decision to get up almost instantly. It was starting to get colder and apparently my wolf still wasn't strong enough so it bugged the hell out of me. Everyone else was totally fine, even in the snow, but I've been shivering constantly since the leaves started to drop. Xavier moved my toothbrush and comb into his bathroom at some point, so I only returned to my room when I needed clean clothes. I brushed my teeth and took a shower, cranking up the water as ho

Xavier Just as I thought she was going to fall asleep again, she said she was ready to leave. I shoved down my disappointment and just nodded. I opened my arms so she could wriggle out, then smiled a little when she pulled at the blankets to cover her bare lower half. "Wait here, I'll grab you some clothes," I said. I swore internally as I stood up, adjusting my pants that were still painfully tight. "Okay," she squeaked out, her cheeks crimson. I hummed to myself as I walked down the hall to her room. There wasn't much in her dresser, so it only took a minute to find her a clean set of clothes. I found myself pausing in the doorway, glancing around with a small frown. Roxanne had been here for a couple of weeks now and barely left this room when she first arrived, but she hadn't done anything to make the space hers. If I hadn't left all the decorations when I moved to the room down the hall, it wouldn't look used at all. Just move back in here with her, my wolf suggested. No, I s

I woke up shaking and covered in sweat again. I had no recollection of my dream—or nightmare, but that was nothing new. The arm around my waist was very new though and I almost screamed when it tightened abruptly. I held my breath as I stared at the wall; I could feel every part of my alpha's body pressed right up against my back. Every part. I could hear my wolf’s amused chuckle as I tried desperately not to move. The thoughts of what Xavier might do if I woke him up right now ran through my head and it sent a trill of fear through me. Then I felt a sudden ache between my thighs. Oh fuck not this again, I whimpered. It was so uncomfortable and left me reeling in confusion. How the hell could I be scared and aroused at the same time? Maybe I am insane. “What are you thinking about?” Xavier’s voice was still raspy with sleep and the sound sent a shiver down my spine. A blush crept onto my cheeks. “Nothing,” I said. He kissed the top of my head and pulled me closer. “Sure doesn’t sm
