Chapter 3

George placed his hands on my waist, his body heat enveloping me. I instinctively pulled away, feeling overwhelmed.

"Let go of me!" I struggled, and to my surprise, he didn’t resist.

He immediately released me.

Shaken, I rushed back to my room and locked the door behind me. The thought of where George had touched me made my skin crawl with disgust.

I grabbed my phone, ready to text Leonard, when there was a knock at the door.

"Veronica, you came back without saying a word," Mary’s slightly accusatory voice came from outside.

Hearing her tone, I looked at the door with pure disdain. I didn’t care that she was my mother-in-law anymore.

"Mom, I hope you don’t take this the wrong way, but some things just need to be said. Heaven’s watching. You’re old enough to know better—why are you still messing around with that Black man?"

Her face turned pale and then flushed red.

Under my stare, she stammered, "Veronica, are you sure you’re not misunderstanding something?"
