I had expected Gary to do something like that. However, what shocked me the most was that Bob—who was supposed to be Mary’s father—merely remained on the deck on his knees, even though his daughter was being given such an unceremonious funeral. He was hanging his head, as if it wouldn’t happen if he couldn’t see it.

The icy raindrops that were pelting my body felt like icicles stabbing into my heart. Clenching my fist as an indescribable pain unfurled over my chest, I couldn’t help chasing after the armed guards as I yelled, “Wait! Please, wait!”

They turned towards me in confusion but stopped, and I promptly took off my clothes to cover her. Then, I did my best to recall the lyrics of a particular dirge while I sang it, while gently drawing a cross over her forehead—I might not be a devout Christian, and I had no idea if Mary’s soul would be granted rest or reach heaven after her passing, but this was the only thing I could do for her.
