Abigail went to her bedroom, entirely drained from the events of the day. It was more than the one day, though. It was a backlog of emotion, of feelings she had refused to deal with, of quick solutions that had given her more heartache than soothed any real pain.

And all of it came to the front now.

Abigail wanted nothing more than to get into a hot shower, order some hot chocolate to her room with possibly a toasted cheese sandwich, and curl under her pajamas in her blanket. She felt she deserved a small amount of peace before everything that would happen tomorrow would happen. She still wasn't sure how everything would work out exactly, but she was sure it would.

And because life was just not going to be easy for her, a hot shower wasn't all waiting for her in her bedroom.

"How dare you!" Charlotte seethed, as soon as Abigail stepped through her threshold.

If she was being perfectly honest, Abigail wasn't even surprised that she was there. She was more amazed that her stepmother

A man stared through his binoculars, at a young woman sitting on the floor of a tiny apartment, bent over a laptop, cradling her head in her hands.Abigail stared in dismay as the last of her funds transferred out of her bank account. She'd been saving for a few months religiously and had finally had a good amount of savings. But her scholarship had been pulled out from under her feet, and now she had to cover her tuition herself. And that had taken all of her savings and most of her money for this month. If she was careful with the rest, they wouldn't starve this month. But if she wasn't. They might start owing on their rent.Abigail was careful, always so careful, to never fall behind in any of their payments. Poverty was a trap, and if you fell into it, it was near impossible to get out. So, she always made sure their bills were paid, first, before anything else. Then came the doctor visits. She never skimped on any of those, not for her and not for her mother. They couldn't a

"Copy that," another voice answered the man on the phone. "You have orders to bring her in.""Understood," the man said, watching as the young woman plucked the flowers, placed them in her basket and went inside. "You should warn him though, she doesn't look like she will be what he's expecting.""Understood," the voice said again. "Just bring her in anyway.""We'll be there soon."________________________________________Abigail looked up as a man in a suit came into the store. He was wearing a suit, and he started towards the till, but quickly turned down one of the aisles. Strange, Abigail thought, but left the man to himself. He clearly knew what he wanted.Just then, another man in a suit came in. He looked entirely too serious to be buying flowers, but surprisingly, those kinds of men came in often. People that weren't able to express themselves clearly enough often got in trouble with their other halves, and often came to her looking to solve the problem. They normally c

Abigail struggled to process what was happening. She started off the day not even knowing if her father was dead or alive. And here he was right now, offering to give her a place to stay. At least for a little while."Uhm," Abigail stuttered, she really wasn't sure what she should say in this situation. She didn't want to offend her father just right off the bat, but she also didn't want to commit to anything all too soon."You're not sure," Adam said, and even Abigail could hear the disappointment in his voice. He'd hoped she was going to just say yes."It's not that," Abigail tried gently. "It's just," she paused, biting her lip. "We've just met, and we've only been talking for about five minutes, and I know absolutely nothing about you, and you're asking . . .""For you to upend your entire life to come and live with me," Adam finished, sighing. "I'm asking a lot, it's just," he sighed again, running his hand through his hair. "This is my life. I had to cancel three meetings to

The driver picked her up at her home the next morning. Though Adam had promised her that everything she might need would be provided for her, she still packed a few of her essentials that she thought she couldn't live without.Or maybe she just wanted a little piece of her home with her always. So she'd packed a small duffel bag, and hugged her mom on her way out, promising to call her every day and keep her updated on what was happening around her. She also promised to visit at least once a week. Her mother warned her again, about being careful around her new family. Even if they were family, they were part of a different world entirely.Abigail promised to remember everything her mother told her, and went down to the parked car. It was the same driver from yesterday, and Abigail got the impression that he was now assigned to her as her driver. The security detail was still waiting in the same spot as before. And once Abigail was in the car and driving, they followed behind.___

"So nice to meet you," Charlotte sniffed. "So nice of Adam to come home, also, specifically to meet you, even though he's never home any other day of the week or time.""Oh," Abigail swallowed nervously, she had very clearly caused something. "Uhm, nice to meet you too.""Huh," Olivia cocked her head to the side, staring at Abigail, giving her a once over. "You look like me. Or I look like you, I suppose, given that you're older. I'm prettier of course," Olivia waved her hand like it was the most obvious thing in the world. "But that could just be because you were living in poverty. Poverty does tend to make people much more uglier than they actually are."Abigail blinked, unable to process exactly what was happening or being said around her. She really could not comprehend that these people were speaking to her. They must think she was deaf, or at least hard of hearing."Not that you're ugly of course," Olivia gasped, as if for the first time realizing what she had just said. "How

Abigail stood absolutely still outside her own bedroom door. She could not believe what she as seeing. The bedroom was larger than her entire apartment with her mother. And so absolutely beautiful. She struggled to imagine her father had done all of this in only a few hours. There was the largest bed she had ever seen against the wall furthest from the door. On the left hand side of the bed was a wall that seemed to be made entirely out of glass."This," Olivia pointed to the glass wall. "Are your French doors that open entirely. And if you need, your driver will pick you up from here."Abigail simply nodded, unable to say anything. Then Olivia turned to the wall on the right of the bed, which looked like it was made entirely of wooden panels, all slotted next to each other."And this, is your closet," Olivia pressed gently against one of the panels, and a door swung open. "You also have a computer in here, with all of your clothes catalogued, so you never have to look for anythin

Abigail woke up in a panic, sure she hadn't heard her alarm go off. She checked the clock next to her bed, and saw that it already read half past eight. She was going to be late.Quickly, she stripped out of her pajamas and into some any random clothes she pulled out of her duffel bag. She didn't have the energy or the time to go through her extensive closet.Hurriedly, she pulled a comb through her hair and brushed her teeth, dabbing her face with wet hands and then with a towel. Her clock read 8:45 and she rushed to find the sunroom. She passed by two servant girls, one of whom was unable to say even a word to her, and another directed her to the sunroom. But on arriving there, Abigail found it to be entirely empty, no trace of breakfast to be found. But there was no way she could be twenty minutes late and have missed the whole thing.Abigail paused, trying to think. She then left the sunroom, and tried to find another servant that could help her."Excuse me!" Abigail called t

Abigail found the bedroom Lyall was staying in, since the wedding was going to be here, he had been given a room in the House. Though, he had stayed over quite often before.Abigail was about to knock, when she heard two voice on the other side, clearly arguing."I have to do this!" Abigail could hear Lyall's voice, and Abby could hear the pain in his voice. "I need you to understand, I can't love you without this. I have to marry someone who can give me the funds to restart my company, anything less, and I have no worth.""I am happy with just you," Olivia's voice came through next, clear as a bell. "I know I don't inherit the empire, I know you have no money without my father's help. And I don't care!""Livvy," Lyall whispered, softly. "You will die starving for loving me like this. I could never allow that to happen to you."And all at once, Abby understood. Everything came together in her mind, all the pieces of information, all the snippets."And besides," Lyall's voice came

It was the day before the wedding. It hadn't taken them long to plan and had taken them even less time to put together. Amazing things could be done ridiculously fast when money wasn't an issue to consider.Abigail wanted to believe she hadn't thought of Mark that often, but the truth was, she had almost thought exclusively of him.She missed him in everything, thought of him in everything. He had never stopped calling her or messaging her. But Abigail hadn't responded to anything. He had shattered her trust in him entirely. He hadn't been who he had said he was, the entire person she had fallen in love with hadn't existed. And she had decided to move on with her life. Abigail knew she was never going to love Lyall, but then again, she didn't think she was going to love anyone else, either.Mark had shattered her heart, and more importantly, her trust. She didn't think she would be able to fall in love again. This marriage to Lyall solidified her position in the company. And righ

Abigail had asked her father for one thing, that she be allowed to tell Olivia. Abigail knew, objectively, that Olivia had refused to marry Lyall under the conditions that she could, and had been unable to marry him under her own terms. This had been Olivia's choice, before it had been Abigail's.But she still felt that she wanted to break the news to her sister. So she sought her out, and found her in the living room. Olivia spoke before Abigail could begin, excitedly about some movie Olivia had wanted the two of them to go watch together. And Abigail just allowed her to speak, knowing this might very well be one of the last times she spoke to her like this. When there was a lull, and Olivia sensed something was wrong, Abigail began speaking, beginning with the reasons that Olivia and Lyall themselves had decided on why they couldn't marry. And then began explaining Lyall's desire to rebuild his family's company, but unable to do it on his own. Then Abigail told her sister that s

Abigail hadn't seen or heard from Mark for over a month. And that was entirely by her own choice. She had asked her father to see to it that he was never able to set foot on their grounds ever again, and her father had kept true to his word.Still, Abigail wandered the grounds, unsure herself what she was searching for. But she walked the parts of the garden that she had used to ignore, she wandered through the maze, through the labyrinth and often among the rose bushed.Lyall found her often now. Sometimes she found him. Lyall liked the other parts of the ground more, the more cultivated parts, which explained why Abigail had never seen him there before. He often walked alone. Olivia, Lyall had explained to her once, had sensitive skin, and couldn't withstand the sun much. She also had terrible allergies, often keeping her indoors.Lyall himself quite liked the labyrinth, he had explained to her on another chance meeting, since it gave him clarity of thought. Abigail had tried it

"Mr. Woodtriche," Mark greeted stiffly, but went towards the man and held out a hand for him to shake. "And please call me Mark."Adam took the offered hand, and returned the gesture."Please, do sit down," Adam offered Mark a seat, and called for some fresh tea and cake to be brought."Thank you," Mark answered, sitting down.Abigail seated herself in the chair next to Mark, and he immediately took a hold of her hand. Abigail bit on the inside of her cheek to hide her smile. She actually found it quite enduring how nervous Mark was around her parents.True, he had relaxed a quite a bit with her mother, and she didn't really see that happening with her father, but it was still adorable to watch."I wasn't aware that you knew my daughter," Adam began, sitting back in his chair as new cups of tea were poured for them. "But, my daughter has shown to be rather remarkable and gifted at making connections and uncovering information, so I'm not entirely surprised."Abigail groaned inte

There was a lull of peace in their household now. Abigail wasn't sure exactly how it had happened, or how long it was going to last, but she was grateful for it while it was here.Charlotte hadn't gone with them in to work again, not since she'd caused the disruption to Olivia's schedule that cost the company ten million, and Adam had banned her from setting foot on the company grounds. It hadn't really affected the company that much, financially, since Abigail's unintended information had garnered the company ten times that amount in the same time. But it had been embarrassing to Adam, and that had been where the blow had been felt the worst.Charlotte liked company and the attention it brought, and she very quickly learnt that Abigail, Adam and Olivia had just started leaving the room she was in whenever she made drama. So she had taken to passing small comments, and leaving the major things alone.Olivia had warned her that her mother was only ever still for a short period of ti

After the whole debacle with Mark outside, her day only got worse.Olivia came storming into her office, banging the door open so hard it nearly fell off its hinges. She then banged the door closed again.Olivia marched over to her sister's desk, crossing her arms in front of her."I am trying very hard to remain calm," Olivia answered, her teeth gritted together. "And please bear in mind that I wholly believe this is not your doing, but I just need to be sure before I take my next steps."Abigail listened to her sister intently, and nodded."Did you really tell father that you're not marrying Lyall?" Olivia asked her sister."I did," Abigail affirmed. "I'm not marrying him, Olivia."Olivia nodded, "Dad told me the same thing, so that checks out. Next," Olivia drew a deep breath. "Did you call the head secretary to change any schedule around today at lunch time?"Abigail bit her bottom lip. She had. She'd been scheduled for a meeting with Louis from accounting, but she'd promis
