Chapter 7: Late

Abigail woke up in a panic, sure she hadn't heard her alarm go off. She checked the clock next to her bed, and saw that it already read half past eight. She was going to be late.

Quickly, she stripped out of her pajamas and into some any random clothes she pulled out of her duffel bag. She didn't have the energy or the time to go through her extensive closet.

Hurriedly, she pulled a comb through her hair and brushed her teeth, dabbing her face with wet hands and then with a towel.

Her clock read 8:45 and she rushed to find the sunroom. She passed by two servant girls, one of whom was unable to say even a word to her, and another directed her to the sunroom.

But on arriving there, Abigail found it to be entirely empty, no trace of breakfast to be found. But there was no way she could be twenty minutes late and have missed the whole thing.

Abigail paused, trying to think. She then left the sunroom, and tried to find another servant that could help her.

"Excuse me!" Abigail called to the woman she saw rounding the corner.

"Yes, Ma'am?" the girl answered.

"Where is my father for breakfast?" Abigail asked.

The woman looked at her confused, "He's, in the dining room, Ma'am. Where he's been having breakfast for the past hour already."

Abigail felt herself go cold all over. All right, never mind, she could still salvage this. She just needed to get there before he actually left breakfast.

"And which way would I find the dining room?" Abigail asked kindly, and when the woman pointed in one direction, Abigail took off running.

She arrived at the dining room out of breath, and probably looking like she hadn't even brushed her hair that morning. But, she sighed in relief, at least Adam was still here.

"Abigail," Adam said, and the one word cut right through her. "Where were you for dinner last night?"

Abigail stopped dead in her tracks. "What do you mean? I was in my room."

"Your father came all the way from the office, early, just to have supper with you," Charlotte spoke the words with such an interesting tone. It was like she was happy that Abigail hadn't shown up, but still upset that Adam had thought to make that arrangement for her at all.

Olivia simply sipped of her orange juice.

"Oh," Abigail said, unsure what she was expected to say in this situation, exactly. "I didn't know I was expected to be there."

Adam sighed, like Abigail was purposefully making this difficult. "And breakfast is served at seven thirty on the dot, and in the dining room."

"I'm sorry I'm late," Abigail said, sitting down in the chair opposite Olivia who would not look at her. "I was in the wrong room, and at the wrong time."

"Abigail," Adam said, painstakingly, like each word is a difficulty for him. "I would have liked you to be on time. Our arrangement of getting to know each other is only going to work if you're on time for the schedule we set. I've been waiting for you for half an hour already, now I have to leave."

"I'm sorry," Abigail said again. "I know you're very busy, I'll make sure to be on time for supper, and breakfast tomorrow."

"Thank you," Adam told her. "I will very much appreciate it."

The rest of breakfast lasted all of five minutes, with Adam announcing he needed to get to a meeting and Charlotte, half-way through her complaint about the eggs this morning, followed him out.

Abigail and Olivia both greeted their father and wished him a good day at work, and then sat in silence until both Adam and Charlotte had left the dining room, the doors were closed behind them, and they were sufficiently out of earshot.

Then Olivia smiled sweetly at Abigail.

"You told me the sunroom!" Abigail hissed at Olivia through clenched teeth. "And you told me not to come for supper! You said you would let me know!"

"Sorry!" Olivia excused herself. "I must have said the wrong room by accident. I meant the dining room. We do sometimes eat in the sunroom, so I must have gotten the words confused."

Abigail glared at her. She might not have grown up with Olivia, or had a sister of any kind growing up, but she knew sibling sabotage when she saw it.

"Liar," Abigail told her. "And next time you try to sabotage me, I won't keep quiet and cover for you. I'll throw you right under the bus and tell Adam what you did."

"Oh fine," Olivia answered airily. "I won't make any more mistakes." Then she giggled. "But wasn't it fun seeing him so worked up? You should see him blow up at me when I'm late for something."

Abigail glared. Olivia was obviously trying to make things difficult, but it didn't seem like she truly hated her, it more seemed like pure sibling rivalry, and while Abigail hadn't been hoping for this kind of relationship with her sister, she wasn't going to attack her outright on it.

Olivia was probably spoiled, rich and used to getting what she wanted. Everything was probably a game to her. Abigail just had to show her that wasn't the way the real world worked.

"So anyway," Olivia brushed off the glares like they didn't bother her in the slightest. "What are you doing today?"

"I'm studying," Abigail answered stiffly. If Olivia wanted to play games, Abigail would just show her that she didn't.

"Ooooh," Olivia squealed. "What are you studying? Industrial psychology? The finances of a business? Oh, oh, the divisions of power in a business?"

Abigail stared at Olivia, slightly taken aback. So she wasn't stupid, or an airheaded heiress. She was just, so, childish. And petty.

"Law, actually," Abigail answered, a little more serious, the coldness in her tone gone.

"Oh," Olivia said, a little deflated. "Daddy wanted me to study pre-law, too. He said it was always good for a CEO to know the legal bits, so your lawyers don't screw you over. And also so that you can negotiate your own contracts so once in a while, to show them you don't really need them. But I could never. I would rather pay them to do the dirty work. I like the fun side of running the company."

So Olivia hoped to take over the company one day, then. That was interesting.

Abigail had dreams of running her own law firm one day, but in all honesty, she would be happy just working for a law firm. She would be able to afford her own place, without having to take hand-outs from her father.

Olivia stared at Abigail, giving her a once over, "Are you going to wear that?"

"What's wrong with my clothes?" Abigail asked, it was something she had brought from home.

"Oh we don't have time to go into all of that," Olivia waved her hand. "I'm just saying it would be better for you if you wore the clothes Dad bought for you, you know. You look just a tad bit ungrateful, slopping around in all of that."

Abigail bit on her bottom lip, and for the first time, looked at all of the food in front of her. She had been given a bowl, a breakfast plate, a side plate and a large plate underneath. All empty, so she could choose from anything on the table to fill it with,

A glass of orange juice had been placed in front of her, along with a cup of coffee.

"Anyway," Olivia said, drawing Abigail out of her thoughts. "I'm heading out for the day, so I do hope you won't need me while I'm gone. You'll be here in the house with mother, I'd watch out for her, if I were you. And try not to get in her way or upset her in any way shape or form."

Abigail thought that was a bit hard, seeing as how her being alive seemed to bother Charlotte.

"Have a good breakfast, since we all ate before you," Olivia said, pushing herself up. "I can honestly tell you that nothing here is poisoned. Since you will be alone for lunch, I can't guarantee the same thing. When in doubt if mother is trying to poison you, order pizza. Bye now!"

Olivia waved, and dashed through the dining room doors, going in the very opposite direction that Adam and Charlotte had.

Abigail turned back to the food on the table. There was smoked and fried salmon, with three different kinds of bagel and cream cheeses. Three platters filled with food. There was chicken and mayo sandwiches and an assortment of fried savories, pies and croissants.

Abigail started filling her plate with enough food to last her well passed lunch time. If she was possibly going to be poisoned at her next meal, she should probably try to avoid it.

After breakfast, Abigail went straight back to her room, with the help of directions from some servants along the way.And staring at her closet, she decided that Olivia was right about that. She did have to wear some of the clothes her father had gotten for her, she didn't want him to think she was ungrateful or petty. And in any case, she hadn't showered yet today, so she figured she would do that, and then change into some clothes from her closet. So pushing herself off her bed, Abigail headed into the closet. It was a bit of a daunting task. There was just so much of everything, and everything looked amazing. She browsed through the clothing, there were jeans, pants of every material and style, skirts and sweaters. More t-shirts than all of the clothes she had at home by her mother.Eventually, Abigail settled on black jeans, a long sleeved t-shirt and a sweater to pull over. She went hesitatingly to the underwear drawer, sure she wouldn't find something that would fit her, bu

Abigail almost couldn't speak, completely shocked that he would make an assumption like that about her. He didn't even know her. She had assumed he was a gardener based on the fact that he was working in a garden! How could he make so many assumptions about her just on who her father was?And why did his voice hold so much disdain, Abigail wondered. If he worked for her father, he certainly didn't seem to have the same blind loyalty all the other servants did. Maybe it was because he worked out in the garden. "Excuse me?" Abigail asked, her voice coming out with just a little more venom than she intended. "A spoiled little rich girl? How dare you assume I've never worked a day in my life.""I heard the servant call you Woodtriche yesterday, right? Like, Adam's daughter." Mark said, folding his arms. "I mean, what else could you be, on this land?""Alright," Abigail allowed. "That part is true. But how do you get to say anything else about my life?""Well," Mark gave her a once o

"So, Lyall," Olivia said again. "How is the latest project coming?"Olivia spoke with most of her words hidden; she was purposefully trying to exclude anyone who didn't immediately know what she was talking about. Obviously meant for Abigail, but it also excluded her mother. Though Charlotte didn't seem to mind it all that much."Quite well, I would say," Lyall answered her earnestly. His interest seemed more in the topic; he hadn't once glanced at Olivia's breasts overflowing from her dress.Abigail thought that was very chivalrous of him. Olivia seemed to obviously disagree, straightening her position so every often, her breasts nearly falling out each time.Olivia gave a dainty laugh, placing her hand in front of her mouth. "How long do you think it would take?" Oliva asked, and then immediately bit on her index finger, as though wondering. Her entire demeanor was nothing short of seduction of the highest order. It was truly a sight to behold. And Abigail saw even Charlotte sta

Abigail wondered if this was all worth it, if this life was worth all of the difficulties that came with it. And even though Charlotte didn't seem to like him, at least she wasn't openly hostile to him.Her stepmother would see her thrown out of this house, if she could. Abigail woke early for breakfast the next morning and managed to join her father for breakfast, on time, in the right room.Neither Olivia nor Charlotte were present, and Abigail frowned."This was why I asked you to be punctual," Adam smiled at his daughter. "Neither of them are capable of showing up on time, and I thought it would be nice to have a few moments alone with you."Abigail beamed and sat down next to her father.Their few minutes turned out to be half an hour. And they spent the entire thirty minutes talking. Abigail and Adam spoke over each other at times, trying to get the other to get to know them. They spoke excitedly, animatedly, over anything and everything. One topic overlapped with another, and they barely ate their breakfast.Adam asked about her studies and her future plans. If she would be going back to work on Monday to the flower shop. Adam also told her he needed to speak with her again, to sort out some of the admin work of her staying there with him.

"Like I said, some life formalities.""What do you mean?" Abigail asked her father, confused. She sat down on the sofa he offered her, in front of a roaring fire. And she glanced to the three huge ring binders on the table."Before I show you these," Adam said, placing his hand on one of the binders. "I need you to understand something. If you are at all like me, you would be much too proud to take a hand out. And I need you to understand that this is not what that is."Abigail made to object, already guessing her father was going to give her access to more money than she'd ever had in her entire life."Please, Abigail," Adam held up a hand. Abigail took one minute. One full minute to herself to breathe properly. She drew in a deep breath and exhaled. The next three hours were a rush of madness.Olivia, heightened beyond belief by happiness, had taken over every duty that Charlotte had been entrusted with. And pulled everything off with an amazing style. Olivia worked best when goodness and selfishness could be found in one thing. And Abigail marrying Mark was the perfect combination.Charlotte herself had been relegated to her bedroom, kept under watchful eye of security and wait staff. She would be allowed out for the ceremony, because her absence would have caused more harm than good, but then she would be taken right back, under the guise of exhaustion.Olivia also wanted her mother to witness this event, and Abigail felt she would allow her sister that bit of petty vengeance.Abigail was more than happy to allow her sister to take care of most things because she had something very special she wanted to do.Abigail dressed in one of the smaller rooms off to the side of the solarium. She felt she deserved a small amount of peace before everything that would happen tomorrow would happen. She still wasn't sure how everything would work out exactly, but she was sure it would. And because life was just not going to be easy for her, a hot shower wasn't all waiting for her in her bedroom."How dare you!" Amazing things could be done ridiculously fast when money wasn't an issue to consider.Abigail wanted to believe she hadn't thought of Mark that often, but the truth was, she had almost thought exclusively of him.She missed him in everything, thought of him in everything. Abigail had asked her father for one thing, that she be allowed to tell Olivia. Abigail knew, objectively, that Olivia had refused to marry Lyall under the conditions that she could, and had been unable to marry him under her own terms. This had been Olivia's choice, before it had been Abigail's.But she still felt that she wanted to break the news to her sister. So she sought her out, and found her in the living room. Olivia spoke before Abigail could begin, excitedly about some movie Olivia had wanted the two of them to go watch together. And Abigail just allowed her to speak, knowing this might very well be one of the last times she spoke to her like this. When there was a lull, and Olivia sensed something was wrong, Abigail began speaking, beginning with the reasons that Olivia and Lyall themselves had decided on why they couldn't marry. And then began explaining Lyall's desire to rebuild his family's company, but unable to do it on his own. Then Abigail told her sister that s

Abigail hadn't seen or heard from Mark for over a month. And that was entirely by her own choice. She had asked her father to see to it that he was never able to set foot on their grounds ever again, and her father had kept true to his word.Still, Abigail wandered the grounds, unsure herself what she was searching for. But she walked the parts of the garden that she had used to ignore, she wandered through the maze, through the labyrinth and often among the rose bushed.Lyall found her often now. Sometimes she found him. Lyall liked the other parts of the ground more, the more cultivated parts, which explained why Abigail had never seen him there before. He often walked alone. Olivia, Lyall had explained to her once, had sensitive skin, and couldn't withstand the sun much. She also had terrible allergies, often keeping her indoors.Lyall himself quite liked the labyrinth, he had explained to her on another chance meeting, since it gave him clarity of thought. Abigail bit on the inside of her cheek to hide her smile. She actually found it quite enduring how nervous Mark was around her parents.True, he had relaxed a quite a bit with her mother, and she didn't really see that happening with her father, but it was still adorable to watch."I wasn't aware that you knew my daughter," Adam began, sitting back in his chair as new cups of tea were poured for them. There was a lull of peace in their household now. Abigail wasn't sure exactly how it had happened, or how long it was going to last, but she was grateful for it while it was here.Charlotte hadn't gone with them in to work again, not since she'd caused the disruption to Olivia's schedule that cost the company ten million, and Adam had banned her from setting foot on the company grounds. It hadn't really affected the company that much, financially, since Abigail's unintended information had garnered the company ten times that amount in the same time.
