"So nice to meet you," Charlotte sniffed. "So nice of Adam to come home, also, specifically to meet you, even though he's never home any other day of the week or time."

"Oh," Abigail swallowed nervously, she had very clearly caused something. "Uhm, nice to meet you too."

"Huh," Olivia cocked her head to the side, staring at Abigail, giving her a once over. "You look like me. Or I look like you, I suppose, given that you're older. I'm prettier of course," Olivia waved her hand like it was the most obvious thing in the world. "But that could just be because you were living in poverty. Poverty does tend to make people much more uglier than they actually are."

Abigail blinked, unable to process exactly what was happening or being said around her. She really could not comprehend that these people were speaking to her. They must think she was deaf, or at least hard of hearing.

"Not that you're ugly of course," Olivia gasped, as if for the first time realizing what she had just said. "How could you be, when we share half of our genetics? And not one portion of me is ugly, so you of course can't be ugly either."

Oh. So even Abigail's own looks were less about Abby and more about Olivia.

"How old are you?" Abigail asked, she would completely understand everything that was happening right now if Olivia said she fifteen. Or five.

"Now that's just rude," Charlotte remarked, staring down at Abigail reproachingly. "One should never ask a lady her age."

"Oh, come off it mom," Olivia waved her mother off. "I'm sure there's an exception for sisters, and she's obviously just asking because I look so young and she can't believe I'm only two years younger than her."

Abigail couldn't believe how vain her sister was. But her vanity seemed harmless enough.

"Is that all you're going to discuss?" Adam asked his daughter distastefully. "Why don't you discuss something of substance?"

"What?" Olivia asked her father. "Like the names of the board of directors in Alphabetical order? I'm sure that would be fun. Come," Olivia turned to Abigail, "Let me show you around properly. I'm sure daddy got three minutes into showing you around and had to go because of some emergency."

"Thank you, Olivia," Adam interrupted quickly. "Please, do go show Abigail around, and update her on the schedule for the day tomorrow, please."

Schedule? Abigail wasn't aware that they'd had anything planned. But she would be grateful to see her room, this duffel was getting a little difficult to carry with her.

"Oh, yeah, do emergencies happen often?" Abigail asked, as Charlotte started leading her out of the entry way and towards the corridors. "Code Emerald, I think?"

Immediately Abigail and Olivia both froze, hearing a sharp crash and a loud shriek.

"Run," Olivia told Abigail, and together the two girls sprinted, just barely hearing Charlotte start screaming as they rounded a corner.

Olivia grabbed Abigail's hand and pulled her down two corridors, and Abigail was sufficiently lost and out of breath by the time Olivia stopped pulling on her, and both girls leaned against the wall.

They're all insane, Abigail thought, trying to take a deep breath.

"Oh my god that was fun!" Olivia shrieked. "Please, please promise me you'll make mummy and daddy more upset with each other every day."

"What did I do?" Abigail asked around gulps of breath, genuinely concerned.

"Code Emerald is the wait staff's warning to daddy when Mother is in a mood," Olivia laughed. "I think she was upset that daddy was here to greet you today but couldn't be here for her yesterday morning."

"Oh," Abigail felt bad, and she didn't like that she had started on such a footing with Charlotte. "What did she need him for yesterday?"

Charlotte shrugged, "I think one of the servants put too much sugar in her tea, and she accused him of trying to age her faster and damage her diet, and so she wanted daddy to fire him on the spot. But I think daddy was in an acquisitions meeting with someone at the time. A billion-dollar investment deal, and he let her message go to voicemail."

Abigail well and truly wondered if she would fit in here. And for the first time that she was sure was not going to be the last, wondered if she wanted to.

"I," Abigail started. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to cause trouble."

"Trouble will find you in this house," Olivia warned her. "You have to be really very careful with everything you do."

Abigail was starting to see that, but she got the impression that even if she did, she would still get so many things wrong.

"Come," Olivia nodded to her, pushing off against the wall. "Let me show you to your room. It's a bit of a walk from here, but you can get the driver to pull right outside your French doors, and then you won't have to walk to the entrance every time you want to leave."

Abigail blinked, trying to comprehend having a car pick her up from right outside her bedroom doors. It seemed so surreal, given that she had gone from not having hot water in her shower this morning, to having her own personal chauffeur today.

But overarching that, Abigail worried what Olivia meant that trouble would find her here, and that she had to be really careful about what she did.

"Olivia," Abigail called out to her, when they'd been walking for a few steps.

"Uh huh?" Olivia answered, not turning to look at Abigail.

"What do you mean, I have to be very careful with everything I do?" Abigail asked, wondering if Olivia had maybe been referring to her mother.

"Oh," Olivia waved her hand again. "It's just dad. He's very particular about how he wants everything to run. And that's not just for the company, either. Its for the family, and the house and everyone in it."

"Oh," Abigail said aloud. She hadn't been expecting that. So far, her father had seemed very easy going, if a bit of a busy man.

"Yeah, so we have the Woodtriche name, his name," Olivia emphasized, making a chopping motion with her hand on her palm. "So we have to be deserving of it. At least, that's what he says. There are important events to attend to, we have to be on time for everything and on our very best behaviour."

"Wow," Abigail said again. "That sounds like a lot."

And nothing of that had even been seen in the newspapers, neither had Adam mentioned anything of that to her. Maybe she was held to different standards?

"Will he expect that of me, too?" Abigail asked, she would try to honor her father's wishes as best as she could, while she lived under his roof.

"He will expect it, solely of you," Olivia told her. "He's given up entirely on me, and that's why you're here. I think he's just hoping for a do over baby with you, given that mother refuses to give him another child on the basis of how much I ruined her body." Oliva made air quotes at the last bit. "But you're a full grown adult, so that's even better."

Abigail bit her lip nervously. She didn't want to put too much weight on everything Olivia was saying, but then again, if anything, Olivia seemed blatantly honest and upfront with her words.

She didn't seem like someone to make something like that up.

Though, she hoped her sister was wrong. She would hate to think that her father came looking for her simply because his legitimate child wasn't exactly what he wanted her to be.

"He's not impossible though," Olivia admitted. "He's just very exacting. And I wasn't what he wanted me to be, so. But I'm okay with it. I mean, I'm still my own person, and he's kind to me. I will tell you one thing, we have a good dad, he's a bit harsh and sometimes goes about things the wrong way, but he always means well."

That last piece of information soothed her. Then she could deal with anything that was given to her. If Adam wasn't impossible, just had high expectations for his children, Abigail could understand that, and she was more than willing to work within those limits and try to reach those expectations.

"I'd really like it if you could help me," Abigail said again. "Trying to see how I can fit in here, and to make sure that I don't mess up, or say anything I shouldn't again. I'd really appreciate the help."

"Of course," Olivia promised her sweetly. And for some reason, Abigail thought she just shouldn't trust that promise.

Abigail had no doubt that everything Olivia had just told her was true, but she also knew when someone agreed too readily to something, there was generally a benefit for them in it.

But she tried not to dwell too long on it, as they reached a pair of large oak doors.

"And this," Olivia said, stopping outside the two large oak doors. "Is your room."

Abigail stood absolutely still outside her own bedroom door. She could not believe what she as seeing. The bedroom was larger than her entire apartment with her mother. And so absolutely beautiful. She struggled to imagine her father had done all of this in only a few hours. There was the largest bed she had ever seen against the wall furthest from the door. On the left hand side of the bed was a wall that seemed to be made entirely out of glass."This," Olivia pointed to the glass wall. "Are your French doors that open entirely. And if you need, your driver will pick you up from here."Abigail simply nodded, unable to say anything. Then Olivia turned to the wall on the right of the bed, which looked like it was made entirely of wooden panels, all slotted next to each other."And this, is your closet," Olivia pressed gently against one of the panels, and a door swung open. "You also have a computer in here, with all of your clothes catalogued, so you never have to look for anythin

Abigail woke up in a panic, sure she hadn't heard her alarm go off. She checked the clock next to her bed, and saw that it already read half past eight. She was going to be late.Quickly, she stripped out of her pajamas and into some any random clothes she pulled out of her duffel bag. She didn't have the energy or the time to go through her extensive closet.Hurriedly, she pulled a comb through her hair and brushed her teeth, dabbing her face with wet hands and then with a towel. Her clock read 8:45 and she rushed to find the sunroom. She passed by two servant girls, one of whom was unable to say even a word to her, and another directed her to the sunroom. But on arriving there, Abigail found it to be entirely empty, no trace of breakfast to be found. But there was no way she could be twenty minutes late and have missed the whole thing.Abigail paused, trying to think. She then left the sunroom, and tried to find another servant that could help her."Excuse me!" Abigail called t

After breakfast, Abigail went straight back to her room, with the help of directions from some servants along the way.And staring at her closet, she decided that Olivia was right about that. She did have to wear some of the clothes her father had gotten for her, she didn't want him to think she was ungrateful or petty. And in any case, she hadn't showered yet today, so she figured she would do that, and then change into some clothes from her closet. So pushing herself off her bed, Abigail headed into the closet. It was a bit of a daunting task. There was just so much of everything, and everything looked amazing. She browsed through the clothing, there were jeans, pants of every material and style, skirts and sweaters. More t-shirts than all of the clothes she had at home by her mother.Eventually, Abigail settled on black jeans, a long sleeved t-shirt and a sweater to pull over. She went hesitatingly to the underwear drawer, sure she wouldn't find something that would fit her, bu

Abigail almost couldn't speak, completely shocked that he would make an assumption like that about her. He didn't even know her. She had assumed he was a gardener based on the fact that he was working in a garden! How could he make so many assumptions about her just on who her father was?And why did his voice hold so much disdain, Abigail wondered. If he worked for her father, he certainly didn't seem to have the same blind loyalty all the other servants did. Maybe it was because he worked out in the garden. "Excuse me?" Abigail asked, her voice coming out with just a little more venom than she intended. "A spoiled little rich girl? How dare you assume I've never worked a day in my life.""I heard the servant call you Woodtriche yesterday, right? Like, Adam's daughter." Mark said, folding his arms. "I mean, what else could you be, on this land?""Alright," Abigail allowed. "That part is true. But how do you get to say anything else about my life?""Well," Mark gave her a once o

"So, Lyall," Olivia said again. "How is the latest project coming?"Olivia spoke with most of her words hidden; she was purposefully trying to exclude anyone who didn't immediately know what she was talking about. Obviously meant for Abigail, but it also excluded her mother. Though Charlotte didn't seem to mind it all that much."Quite well, I would say," Lyall answered her earnestly. His interest seemed more in the topic; he hadn't once glanced at Olivia's breasts overflowing from her dress.Abigail thought that was very chivalrous of him. Olivia seemed to obviously disagree, straightening her position so every often, her breasts nearly falling out each time.Olivia gave a dainty laugh, placing her hand in front of her mouth. "How long do you think it would take?" Oliva asked, and then immediately bit on her index finger, as though wondering. Her entire demeanor was nothing short of seduction of the highest order. It was truly a sight to behold. And Abigail saw even Charlotte sta

Abigail wondered if this was all worth it, if this life was worth all of the difficulties that came with it. "Neither of them are capable of showing up on time, and I thought it would be nice to have a few moments alone with you."Abigail beamed and sat down next to her father.Their few minutes turned out to be half an hour. And they spent the entire thirty minutes talking. Abigail and Adam spoke over each other at times, trying to get the other to get to know them. They spoke excitedly, animatedly, over anything and everything. One topic overlapped with another, and they barely ate their breakfast.Adam asked about her studies and her future plans. If she would be going back to work on Monday to the flower shop. Adam also told her he needed to speak with her again, to sort out some of the admin work of her staying there with him.

The next three hours were a rush of madness.Olivia, heightened beyond belief by happiness, had taken over every duty that Charlotte had been entrusted with. And pulled everything off with an amazing style. Olivia worked best when goodness and selfishness could be found in one thing. And Abigail marrying Mark was the perfect combination.Charlotte herself had been relegated to her bedroom, kept under watchful eye of security and wait staff. She would be allowed out for the ceremony, because her absence would have caused more harm than good, but then she would be taken right back, under the guise of exhaustion.Olivia also wanted her mother to witness this event, and Abigail felt she would allow her sister that bit of petty vengeance.Abigail was more than happy to allow her sister to take care of most things because she had something very special she wanted to do.Abigail dressed in one of the smaller rooms off to the side of the solarium. Abigail went to her bedroom, entirely drained from the events of the day. It was more than the one day, though. It was a backlog of emotion, of feelings she had refused to deal with, of quick solutions that had given her more heartache than soothed any real pain. And all of it came to the front now.Abigail wanted nothing more than to get into a hot shower, order some hot chocolate to her room with possibly a toasted cheese sandwich, and curl under her pajamas in her blanket. She felt she deserved a small amount of peace before everything that would happen tomorrow would happen. She still wasn't sure how everything would work out exactly, but she was sure it would. And because life was just not going to be easy for her, a hot shower wasn't all waiting for her in her bedroom."How dare you!" Charlotte seethed, as soon as Abigail stepped through her threshold. If she was being perfectly honest, Abigail wasn't even surprised that she was there. She was more amazed that her stepmother

Abigail could hear Lyall's voice, and Abby could hear the pain in his voice. "I need you to understand, I can't love you without this. I have to marry someone who can give me the funds to restart my company, anything less, and I have no worth.""I am happy with just you," Olivia's voice came through next, clear as a bell. "I know I don't inherit the empire, I know you have no money without my father's help. And I don't care!""Livvy," Lyall whispered, softly. "You will die starving for loving me like this. I could never allow that to happen to you."And all at once, Abby understood. Everything came together in her mind, all the pieces of information, all the snippets."And besides," Lyall's voice came

It was the day before the wedding. It hadn't taken them long to plan and had taken them even less time to put together. Amazing things could be done ridiculously fast when money wasn't an issue to consider.Abigail wanted to believe she hadn't thought of Mark that often, but the truth was, she had almost thought exclusively of him.She missed him in everything, thought of him in everything. He had never stopped calling her or messaging her. But Abigail hadn't responded to anything. He had shattered her trust in him entirely. He hadn't been who he had said he was, the entire person she had fallen in love with hadn't existed. And she had decided to move on with her life. Abigail knew she was never going to love Lyall, but then again, she didn't think she was going to love anyone else, either.Mark had shattered her heart, and more importantly, her trust. She didn't think she would be able to fall in love again. This marriage to Lyall solidified her position in the company. And righ

Abigail had asked her father for one thing, that she be allowed to tell Olivia. Abigail knew, objectively, that Olivia had refused to marry Lyall under the conditions that she could, and had been unable to marry him under her own terms. This had been Olivia's choice, before it had been Abigail's.But she still felt that she wanted to break the news to her sister. So she sought her out, and found her in the living room. Olivia spoke before Abigail could begin, excitedly about some movie Olivia had wanted the two of them to go watch together. And Abigail just allowed her to speak, knowing this might very well be one of the last times she spoke to her like this. When there was a lull, and Olivia sensed something was wrong, Abigail began speaking, beginning with the reasons that Olivia and Lyall themselves had decided on why they couldn't marry. And then began explaining Lyall's desire to rebuild his family's company, but unable to do it on his own. Then Abigail told her sister that s

Abigail hadn't seen or heard from Mark for over a month. And that was entirely by her own choice. She had asked her father to see to it that he was never able to set foot on their grounds ever again, and her father had kept true to his word.Still, Abigail wandered the grounds, unsure herself what she was searching for. But she walked the parts of the garden that she had used to ignore, she wandered through the maze, through the labyrinth and often among the rose bushed.Lyall found her often now. Sometimes she found him. Lyall liked the other parts of the ground more, the more cultivated parts, which explained why Abigail had never seen him there before. He often walked alone. Olivia, Lyall had explained to her once, had sensitive skin, and couldn't withstand the sun much. She also had terrible allergies, often keeping her indoors.Lyall himself quite liked the labyrinth, he had explained to her on another chance meeting, since it gave him clarity of thought. Abigail bit on the inside of her cheek to hide her smile. She actually found it quite enduring how nervous Mark was around her parents.True, he had relaxed a quite a bit with her mother, and she didn't really see that happening with her father, but it was still adorable to watch."I wasn't aware that you knew my daughter," Adam began, sitting back in his chair as new cups of tea were poured for them. There was a lull of peace in their household now. Abigail wasn't sure exactly how it had happened, or how long it was going to last, but she was grateful for it while it was here.Charlotte hadn't gone with them in to work again, not since she'd caused the disruption to Olivia's schedule that cost the company ten million, and Adam had banned her from setting foot on the company grounds. It hadn't really affected the company that much, financially, since Abigail's unintended information had garnered the company ten times that amount in the same time.
