I turned my head and watched as Mallory entered the stables.
“Oh, hello, Mallory,” I greeted neutrally.
“Where have you been?” she asked.
My brows furrowed. “Why do you ask?” I replied with a question.
“Because I need to know,” her lips formed a firm line as she walked towards me.
“Are you even my mother to know my whereabouts?” I replied sarcastically. I turned around and proceeded to the entrance, only to be stopped by her again.
She protested right away, “I deserve to know because we are in a relationship.”
“Our relationship is not real to begin with, Mallory,” I rolled my eyes as I turned back to her.
“I don’t care what kind of a relationship that we have!” she suddenly shouted. She continued, “We are a couple now, which gives me the right to know everything about you!”
I completely turned to her direction and towered over her. “As far as I know, you can only act that way when the relationship is real. A relationship where both people love each other, and are willing to surrender one another to each other,” I replied.
“Well, it still applies to me because I am in love with you,” she stuttered as she tried to find a reason.
“Whatever it is that we have is pretentious. So, I suggest that you stop whatever this act is that you’re doing,” I raised my voice a little as I tried to get my point across. I wanted to make sure that it stuck with her, and in her memory.
“For me, this relationship is real,” she answered.
“This,” I pointed at the two of us, “This relationship was never real,” a hint of anger slipped out of my control. I continued, “Without a doubt, our friendship is undeniably true. But, this relationship that we started will never be true. You have to put an end to your delusions, and remind yourself that this is only temporary.” I finally headed into the kitchen, and I didn’t care if I left her crying or not.

As I was walking in the hallway, I came across Gonzalo. I greeted, “Hello, Gonzalo.”
“Your Highness,” he bowed.
I nodded and walked ahead of him. He immediately followed right behind me. “Any updates or reports that require my knowledge?” I asked.
He started, “Your parents were looking for you, Your Highness. Most especially, His Majesty.”
I came into a halt. “James was looking for me?” I asked as I turned to him.
“Yes, Your Highness.”
“And where are they right now?” I questioned.
Gonzalo replied, “Her Majesty went to visit your aunt, Duchess Bethilda. Your father is currently in his study. He has a few of the lords with him.”
“And my sister?” I asked another.
“As I can recall,” he said as he thought for a moment, “I have seen her enter the library. I overheard her brief conversation with the queen. Her Highness told Her Majesty that she will be having some time for herself. So, my best guess would be in the library.”
I asked, “Is there anything else?”
“There was a man who was looking for you a while ago. He said that you and him were quite close,” he added.
My brows furrowed. I never received any letter that I was expecting a guest. “Were you able to get his name?” I asked.
“Unfortunately, he never mentioned his name, Your Highness. But, it did look like he knew you very well. He knew instantly where to find you,” Gonzalo replied.
“Did he ever mention that he will return?”
Gonzalo answered, “He did say that he will return some other time because he still has his own matters to take care of.”
“Thank you for your diligence in this household, Gonzalo,” I nodded as I praised him. I continued, “I shall head to my room now. If you need anything, you may inform my page that you are welcome to enter at any time.”
“Do you need anything to be sent to your room, Your Highness?” he asked.
This was why James and I entrusted almost everything to Gonzalo. Aside from my protection, he was always on top of everything that I could ever need. Even if I didn’t say anything, he would willingly prepare everything ahead of time. Just so I wouldn’t waste time asking for something.
“Thank you for your concern, Gonzalo. But, as of the moment, I don’t need anything,” I smiled as I put a hand on his shoulder. I removed my hand before I added, “All I need is a proper rest. I will call for you if I need anything.”
“As you wish, Your Highness,” he bowed as he moved aside. He also waited for me to leave.
I gave him a formal nod and I headed to my room.
~*~*~*~
Once I entered my room, I jumped right into my bed. Without even the thought of removing my shoes, I closed my eyes in an attempt to take a quick nap.
“Did you have fun with your little trot outside?” an all too familiar voice echoed throughout my room.
I sat up and scanned my room. As my eyes passed by the window, I took a second look. There stood a figure that I had known for years.
“Hello, Benjamin,” I smiled. Immediately, I stood up and walked towards him. He did the same.
“It has been a long time since we last saw each other, my dear brother,” Benjamin remarked as we shared a tight hug.
“It is nice to see you again, brother,” I smiled as we pulled away. Benjamin has been my best friend since childhood. He was the prince of the Kingdom of Eastern Sun. Everything about our lives were extremely similar. The only difference between the two of us was that he was lucky enough not to be trapped in a marriage arrangement.
With that and that alone, I would say that he was incredibly lucky in life.
“When did you get here?” I asked.
“A while ago. I wasn’t able to get past your guard. He was quite challenging. He seems to be very protective of you,” he replied.
We shared a quick laugh. “So, you’re the man that Gonzalo mentioned,” I remarked. With a bit of pride, I continued, “He’s quite impressive when it comes to my protection.” Gonzalo deserved all of the credit for his unending efforts to ensure my safety.
“I’m quite surprised that he doesn’t know me,” he said, baffled.
I snickered. “I’m not quite sure if you were ever introduced to him, even as we were children.”
“You do have a point here,” he nodded. He continued, “Well, in that case, I would love to meet the person who ensures your safety on a daily basis. I want to express my gratitude for the excellent job that he has been doing.”
“I shall call for him right away. Would you like something to drink or nibble?” I asked with a smile.
“I would love to have a bit of wine. Do you have some to spare for a special guest?” he smirked as he teased me to get a laugh out of me.
“Always the hilarious one, aren’t you?” I snickered. I walked over to the corner of my room and rang my service bell. “Shall we take a seat as we wait?” I gestured over to my table, placed by the window.
“Of course,” he nodded as we made our way towards the table.
“I do have a lovely view of the garden to keep us busy as we wait. Gonzalo does have his hands full on a daily basis,” I explained as we reached our separate chairs.
He turned to me, confused. “But, if I remember correctly, you rang your service bell. Isn’t that supposed to summon a maid, instead?” he asked as we sat down.
I then explained, crossing my legs, “The maids are for my family. Specifically, for my sister since she has a lot of demands.” My first response made us both snicker. I continued, “Gonzalo is the one who is responsible for whatever it is that I need. It was ordered by Their Royal Majesties.”
A knock came upon my door and finally, Gonzalo entered.
“Just the person that we were talking about,” I smiled as I turned to Gonzalo who was already walking towards us.
Gonzalo bowed before us and asked, “You called for me, Your Highness?”
I nodded. “I believe this is the man that you mentioned a while ago, am I correct?” I asked as I pointed to Benjamin.
Gonzalo took a good look at him and replied, “Yes, Your Highness. This was indeed him.”
“This is Prince Benjamin of the Kingdom of Eastern Sun. He has been my greatest friend since childhood. And he has been very eager to meet you,” I said. I continued, “We have spent a lot of time together in both of our castles when we were young. I’m uncertain if he has ever been introduced to you. But, he wants you to know him.”
“It’s an honour to finally meet you, Gonzalo,” Benjamin slowly nodded towards my trusted aid with a formal smile.
Gonzalo knelt and bowed his head. “It is a privilege to meet the person His Highness trusts the most. Please, accept my sincerest apology as I wasn’t able to recognize you before,” he replied.
“An apology won’t be necessary, Gonzalo. It’s not something to make a fuss about,” Benjamin said, smiling before he returned to me. “I have to say, dear brother,” he continued as he looked at me, “Your parents made the right choice for someone to take good care of you. Gonzalo over here,” he briefly gestured towards Gonzalo, “He seems to be a very refined man.”
“Well, I’m proud to say that Gonzalo is always on top of everything that he is supposed to do. He never missed a single task handed to him,” I added.
“I’m almost certain that’s the truth. I don’t think that Uncle James will choose someone of mediocre standards to protect his only heir,” Benjamin replied.
Gonzalo turned to my direction and asked, “Is there anything that I can get for you, Your Highness?”
“Yes, Gonzalo,” I said as I looked at him, “Will it be possible for you to bring us some wine, please?” I asked.
“As you wish, Your Highness,” he bowed briefly. He asked another, “Is there anything that you want to add to that? Something to eat, perhaps?”
“If you can bring us some bread and fruits, that would be lovely. And a few sweets, if possible,” I smiled.
“And as for you, Your Highness?” he asked, turning to Benjamin next. “Do you have your own preference that you want to add?”
“I will have whatever it is that Robert will,” Benjamin answered.
Gonzalo nodded once and returned to me. “I shall have them prepared and delivered immediately,” he said, bowing before he walked away with an affirmed smile.
“He’s very formal, quite firm,” Benjamin returned to our topic as we laid back on our chairs.
I chuckled. “I did tell him not to be too uptight. But, I guess that’s just the way he is. Perhaps, it’s his way of accomplishing all of his tasks in a day,” I said.
Benjamin nodded. “So, where were you a while ago?” he proceeded to ask. He continued, “Gonzalo mentioned that you went outside, and headed to the Mortal Realm. And that’s not all. I also heard that you went there twice today.”
Nervously, I stifled back a laugh, running my fingers over my lips.
“Can you explain to me what’s happening, Robert? Because, for you to leave the castle, and to go somewhere more than once in a day, is unusual for you,” he remarked.
“How can you say that it’s odd for me to do such a thing?” I asked. I continued, “Maybe, because of so many royal duties, I just wanted a breath of fresh air. I don’t see that as strange.”
He said, “For your personality, it is baffling to know.”
“Why?”
Benjamin then explained, “When we were children, you were already satisfied, playing in the garden. And when we got older, you would only go outside because of your royal visitations. You don’t even attend the banquets and random parties that your family hosts. Then, all of a sudden, I learned that you left the castle grounds twice?”
I snortled quickly as I leaned forward, my arms on my knees.
“Please, talk to me. We can always tell each other anything,” Benjamin said as he leaned forward as well.
With the lowest volume possible, I said, “Well, I met someone.”
“You met someone?” Benjamin leaned closer. “Is this a man? Or a woman?” one of his brows raised as he smirked.
“Um… a woman,” I said, with caution.
“A woman?!” Benjamin asked in a sudden outburst. “Keep it down, Benjamin!” I shushed him in a panic. I didn’t want the maids to turn our conversation into another source of gossip for them. I continued, “Yes, I met a woman in the Mortal Realm.” He asked another, “And let me guess: you took a liking to this lady, didn’t you?” All of a sudden, Gonzalo arrived. With him was a cart, containing the wine, and everything else that I asked for him to bring. After a mountain of hesitation, I answered, “Well, I can’t say that I don’t.” Gonzalo finally reached us and prepared everything for us. “Is she a part of the upper class, working class or the lowest class of all?” Benjamin continued with his questions as our goblets were handed over to us. “I cannot consider her as part of the lowest class of society. She does, however, work to support herself,” I said as Gonzalo half-filled my cup with wine. I could only drink this much because I never drank wine. Unless, of course, if it was for a
As soon as James’ door was in sight, his guards immediately crossed his spears, blocking the entrance. “Your Highness,” one of them greeted, “His Majesty is currently in a meeting. Do you have a message for him?” “Gonzalo mentioned that His Majesty summoned me. I’m surprised that you didn’t know that,” I said, keeping my composure. The two guards looked at each other, confused and horrified. The other guard answered, “Accept our deepest apologies, Your Highness. Please, don’t take us as incompetent. However, as long as the king is in a meeting, we don’t allow anyone in.” Suddenly, the door opened and James’ page appeared. “Your Highness,” he bowed, “Is there something that I can help you with?” “His Majesty has asked me to fetch the young prince,” Gonzalo entered the conversation. “That’s the reason why His Highness is here.” James’ page looked at us, confused. “Did he, now?” he slowly turned to Gonzalo with an icy stare. He remarked, “I’m the king’s royal page. If he were to summ
Currently in my study as I skimmed through the new reports on my desk. Today didn’t end well, but what should I expect? Aside from my impossible relationship with James, my current situation with Laura abruptly crossed my mind. All of a sudden, everything stopped. Laura… What I did to her this afternoon was just… gut-wrenching. Unacceptable. I could only hope that she would forgive me. But, what could I do to express my guilt? What should I say in order to earn her forgiveness? I turned to the table by the window. And I immediately caught sight of a pen, on top of a few pieces of paper. A letter! Perhaps, a letter could help resolve some of the pain I caused between us? I shook my head as I removed myself from my thoughts. Why was I even too troubled about her? We just met and yet, she had some sort of impact on me. What I did to her shouldn’t matter this much to me. But why was I feeling this way? Instead of going back to work, I contemplated even more on what I should do. Sho
Water rushed in from every corner that I turned to. As I ran through the long corridor, I searched for the ones I was with. Everyone was screaming as they ran to save their lives. And all I could do was to follow the direction where everybody was headed. “Robert!” a voice shouted my name from behind me. I turned around to see who it was, only to be carried in the arms of a man. “Hold onto me, son,” the man said as he pulled my head closer to his shoulder. “You’re safe. I’m here.” It was my father and he was running in the same direction that I was. “Darling, hurry!” a woman in front of us shouted as she turned her head to our direction. It was Mother. She was holding my sister’s hand as we all ran. My father was about to catch up to them when suddenly, he slipped. He lost his grip on me and I slid to the left side of the ship. It was already filled with water, deep enough for me to be submerged into. “Robert! Hold on!” my father screamed as I did my best to keep my head above
On my way to the kitchen, I accidentally bumped into James. Just the last person that I wanted to see. “James!” I exclaimed as I stopped on my tracks. “Robert,” he greeted as he looked at me, baffled. “Why are you running in the hallway? You know how I feel about that.” “My apologies. I just needed to get to the stables as quickly as possible,” I replied. “Stables? Are you headed somewhere?” he asked. I froze for a second. ‘Great! I just gave him even more reason to question me,’ I thought to myself, scolding myself for my carelessness. ‘Think of an explanation and quick! It has to be acceptable!’ “I’m quite late for my time with Lady today. I’ve decided to take upon the responsibility to give her a bath, and everything else that she would need for today,” I reasoned. “Didn’t you assign that to some of the servants? Why the sudden interest in taking care of Lady?” he asked. I did my best to calm my nerves. I couldn’t show him that I was panicking deep inside. If he found out
“Laura,” I stood in a heartbeat as I walked towards her. “What are you doing here?” she asked. “I came to see you.” “Did you receive my letter?” she asked after she paused for a bit. “Yes,” I nodded. “I told you: if you follow the instructions, I will receive your response.” “I still don’t understand the instructions that you wrote,” she shook her head. “All I told myself was to do what you told me to do.” “Well, you did a good job,” I smiled as I gently patted her head. I froze as I realised what I just did. I pulled my hand back and we both stood in silence for a bit. I then cleared my throat. “Would you like to have a seat?” I asked as I gestured towards the bench. “Um, of course,” she smiled. I stepped aside, allowing her to sit down before me. When she was comfortable, I sat beside her. “Is there something wrong?” she asked. “I’m surprised that you’re here during this time of the day. Don’t you have duties, responsibilities to take care of?” “I already finished some of
Ronald peeked out at us from the entrance of the bakery. “I hope that your short time with your friend is enough because you’re needed back inside,” he snapped at Laura. “Oh, of course. Tell Grandpa Ben that I’ll be right inside,” she replied after a nod. Ronald scoffed as he went back inside. “Why do you always have to put up with him?” I asked as she turned back to me. “I have no other choice but to bear with him,” she shrugged after a short sigh. “And I can’t simply remove him from the bakery. Only Grandpa Ben has the authority to do that.” “Then, why does he let Ronald treat you like that? He has no respect for you,” I complained. She giggled before she cupped my face. “Will you calm down, Robert? You shouldn’t be bothered by what’s happening here. You don’t even work here,” she replied in an attempt to comfort me. I held onto her hands, caressing them with my thumbs. “I’m just worried that he might do something to you. Something I can never forgive,” I said. She sighed
Rushing towards James’ door, the guards immediately blocked my path. Perhaps, they sensed my anger from a mile away. “Let me in,” I ordered. “Your Highness, His Majesty is--” “I don’t care whatever he’s doing right now. Let me in!” I shouted, not caring even if my voice was heard throughout the castle. “Is that your son, Your Majesty?” I heard one of the lords inside say. I looked at the guards and they were confused, absolutely having no clue what to do. “Are you going to open the door or are you going to wait for me to explode and have you both sent to the dungeon?” I threatened. They quickly removed their spears, giving me a way to barge into the study. The lords and James suddenly looked in my direction as the doors swung open and hit the wall behind them. “Robert,” was all that James could utter at the very sight of me. “May I have a word with you?” I replied, trying to control my anger. The lords looked at each other. “Your Highness, we’re about to go on a trip right
A prince had a peaceful night all to himself. His fireplace burned brightly as it kept his quarters warm against the harsh, cold atmosphere outside the old castle he currently resided in. A direct view of the beautiful moon outside his window. And a scrumptious meal right in front of him.He happily dug into his meal, which was something that he hadn’t done in a long while. Not after all the sleepless nights that he had. As well as the days where he pretended in front of his family.‘Ah, finally,’ he thought to himself as he cut through the tender meat on his plate. ‘A night where I can finally enjoy my food.’Just as soon as he was going to take a bite, a knock came upon his door. He groaned as he put his fork down. “Who is it?” he answered, irritated. The door creaked open and a servant called out of the dark. “Prince Benjamin?”“I thought I made it clear that I wanted to be left alone for a few hours,” Benjamin replied as he scratched his forehead.“My apologies, Your Highness, but
“Grandpa Ben?” my brows knitted together as I called out.“What are you doing here? Where did you come from?” I asked as he approached us.Grandpa Ben stopped right before us. He immediately glared at Gonzalo. But Gonzalo didn’t back down. He stared right back at Grandpa Ben.Grandpa Ben then cleared his throat and returned to me. “Go ahead. Bring Laura back. However, I want for the both of you to return safely. If I don’t see you with her, I will never forgive you even in death.”“Have you no regards to his life?!” Gonzalo protested, making us turn to him. “For the sake of getting your daughter back, you’re willing to put the prince at risk?! Don’t you mortals ever think of anything but yourselves?!”“And what about you Immortals? Don’t you do the same?” Grandpa Ben snapped. “I may look like a weak, old man. But I’m well-versed with stories of your kind. I never imagined that the myths of gods and goddesses being selfish were actually true. But you,” he pointed a finger at Gonzalo, “
The moon shone high in the sky as I looked out my bedroom window. The whole room was pitch black, dark as the night sky above. And only the powerful moonlight was able to illuminate my room.Well, at least a portion of it.I was incredibly frustrated with everything that I never bothered to light my torches as night fell. After I returned from James’ study, I remained in my room and did absolutely nothing. I simply sat by the window and drank tea without any signs of stopping. I also requested for an early dinner, an attempt to avoid James during dinner time.I just wanted to be left alone.I just wanted some space.‘I just want progress. Was that too much to ask for?’ my mind shouted, helpless as no one could hear it. And no one bothered to listen or even ask me.Then, a knock on my door echoed throughout the room. But I didn’t answer. I already rejected persistent knockings as I remained in my quarters. Even though someone from the other end called for my name, I never made my prese
Bethilda’s mouth hung in disbelief.“Your Highness, my heart's already breaking for the sacrifice that I am to make. Against my own beliefs and wishes, I am giving you my men to aid your cause. Just because I want them to have some time to prepare, that doesn’t mean I am on the other side of this debacle,” Bethilda protested. She added, “Your impatience will put their lives at risk. And that’s a risk that I will never be willing to take.”I pressed my lips together as my nose flared after a deep sigh. Truth be told, I gave my full respect to Bethilda as she put her servants before anything. However, I couldn’t wait again for a longer time. We already wasted too much time here and we never made any sort of progress in terms of the rescue mission.I cared for Bethilda’s household the same as I did for my own. But we couldn’t afford to wait another week before we could proceed. We didn’t even have the slightest clue on what could be happening within Benjamin’s territory. The mere thought
Bethilda’s eyes widened whilst James immediately turned to my direction. This was the fastest solution that I could think of. James already exhausted all of his efforts for this debacle. I had to do something, even if he didn’t like it.Bethilda looked to James for a moment before she returned to me. “Whatever the reason is for this sudden request of aid, I am afraid that it will do you more harm than good,” she answered. She added, “My soldiers aren’t fully trained for combat. I only trained them to protect and to distract enemies. And besides, I don’t think that His Majesty is in favour of this decision of yours, Your Highness.”“James has already given his all for our cause. We don’t know who to turn to and we are running out of time,” I answered. James’ stare never left but I paid no mind. I had no time to argue with him.Bethilda asked, “Have you reached out to other kingdoms? I know that you are attempting to rescue a friend. If that is the case, shouldn’t it be advised to ask t
“I already sent some of the guards to gather more troops back home.“We don’t know how many men Benjamin has to protect him,” James replied. “As much as possible, I don’t want to spill too much blood, especially within their territory. I don’t want this debacle to cause a scandal. And I also don’t want to destroy our alliance with them. At the same time, we can’t waste the lives of more men, both on his side and ours.”For James to still honour our alliance with Eastern Sun, even after what Benjamin did, was frustrating.Benjamin betrayed me. Trust and loyalty were values that I held in high regard. But Benjamin disregarded that, all because he didn’t get what he wanted. For that action alone, the friendship between our kingdoms was also destroyed. How could we possibly trust a traitor? Even if that person was our ally, it already destroyed their credibility as someone we trusted deeply. However, I understood why James was still worried about the alliance. Eastern Sun wasn’t simply a
Marcus chuckled as he shrugged. He looked down to his feet and replied, “My loyalty to the duchess is more than just of a servant, Your Highness. And even though that was the case for me,” Marcus returned to me, “I never overstepped nor did I ever use my emotions to my advantage. I respected her as my mistress. The person who gave me a home and a new life. Nothing more, nothing less.”Marcus’ response rendered me speechless.Who would’ve thought that a servant would develop strong feelings towards their mistress?Perhaps because of Bethilda’s care towards Marcus, his gratitude slowly turned into something else. Unfortunately, in this world - or in any other world in that retrospect - a relationship between a servant and their master would never be acceptable.I could only feel the ache on Marcus’ behalf as I once felt the same for Laura. That feeling that we wished we were born within the same kind of beings, just so nothing would be able to stand in the way of what we felt for each o
“Thank you for accompanying me all the way here.“For now,” I turned to the two guards behind me, “I would like to have a moment alone.”After I woke up from my nap, I decided to take a quick stroll around the castle grounds. Luckily, the guards told me that Bethilda had a small garden. So, I asked them to show me its location. The two guards shared glances with each other, worried and unsure. One of them replied, “But Your Highness, His Majesty specifically said that should you ask for our company, we are not to leave you alone. Especially when you are outside the castle.”I chuckled. “There is nothing to be scared of, gentlemen. With the location of the duchess’ residence, it’s a bit impossible for enemies to attack from within these walls,” I explained. “At the same time, I don't think that these walls are penetrable from all fronts.”The guards looked at each other again, still uncertain of what to do.I sighed, which made them turn to me. “I assure you, I can manage on my own. I
“And how long have you been in service within the duchess’ household?” I asked the maid in front of me.An hour had already passed and I was still only halfway through the inspection. I had to be very careful when I asked certain questions. At the same time, I had to discern personalities behind prim and proper facades.I couldn’t rush the process even if I wanted to. I didn’t know who could possibly have dark motives against Bethilda so I had to proceed with caution. I didn’t want to be the cause of her death, all because I chose the wrong people to serve her.“I have been serving the duchess for seven years,” the maid replied.“Ah, that would mean that you are fairly new within the household,” I said as I wrote the information down. “In your few years of service, how familiar are you with everything?”Her response was interrupted when my doors suddenly opened. We turned our heads and watched as James entered my room. Immediately, we stood and gave our greetings.“Did I interrupt any
