As soon as James’ door was in sight, his guards immediately crossed his spears, blocking the entrance. “Your Highness,” one of them greeted, “His Majesty is currently in a meeting. Do you have a message for him?”
“Gonzalo mentioned that His Majesty summoned me. I’m surprised that you didn’t know that,” I said, keeping my composure.
The two guards looked at each other, confused and horrified. The other guard answered, “Accept our deepest apologies, Your Highness. Please, don’t take us as incompetent. However, as long as the king is in a meeting, we don’t allow anyone in.”
Suddenly, the door opened and James’ page appeared. “Your Highness,” he bowed, “Is there something that I can help you with?”
“His Majesty has asked me to fetch the young prince,” Gonzalo entered the conversation. “That’s the reason why His Highness is here.”
James’ page looked at us, confused. “Did he, now?” he slowly turned to Gonzalo with an icy stare. He remarked, “I’m the king’s royal page. If he were to summon anybody, he would’ve told me so.”
“Let us not drag this unnecessary conversation for too long, gentlemen,” I interjected as I didn’t want an argument between them. This wasn’t that big of an issue. I continued, “If my father’s household doesn’t know about this, then I respect that. I have nothing against that. Please, tell His Majesty that I was here.”
James’ guards and page bowed.
I returned a slow nod and walked away with Gonzalo. But, not far along into the hallway, I heard, “Robert?”
I came into a halt. I turned my head, only to see James outside his door.
“Come, please,” he gestured for me to return.
I sighed as I scratched my nape.
As I approached him, he asked, “I called for you. Why didn’t you knock?”
“Your guards and your page said you were in a meeting,” I replied.
James turned to them and immediately scowled over them.
“Your Majesty,” they all uttered as they bowed at the same time.
“Would one of you mind telling me why you stopped my son from entering my study?” James immediately questioned. His voice shook as his fists shook by his sides.
“Forgive us, Your Majesty,” his page replied with a brave front. Although, his attempt to hide his fear was failing him greatly. He continued, “You were in the middle of a gathering with the lords. We thought you didn’t want to be disturbed by anyone.”
“And if I may add, Your Majesty,” one of the guards said, “You didn’t inform us that Gonzalo was tasked to fetch the young prince. We assumed that they were here without your knowledge.”
James let out a long sigh as he crossed his arms. Immediately, the three men went down on their knees and pleaded for their lives.
“I beg of you, Your Majesty, spare us from your punishment,” the other guard cried out. “We didn’t know, Your Majesty. Please, believe us. We didn’t know.”
Guilt quickly built inside of me as they were frowned upon James, all because of me. They weren’t even rude to me when they forbidden me to enter. They told me in a polite manner so I couldn’t say that they offended me. They didn’t deserve James’ anger.
“Your Majesty, if I may?” I bowed as I intervened. I quickly knelt on one knee and he slowly turned to my direction.
I continued, “Spare them from any punishment that you have in mind. They don’t deserve it. They may have stopped me from entering your study, they were only performing their duties. Rest assured that they were never rude to me. They were very polite. And they also advised me to return once your meeting was finished.”
James returned to his servants. “Is that true? What he said about the three of you is true?” he asked.
“Yes, Your Majesty,” his page replied quickly as he nodded with the two guards. He continued, “We would never dare to be impolite towards the young prince.”
Then, there was just silence. I kept my head low as I humbled myself along with the servants.
‘Please, James. Rethink your decision. They have done nothing wrong,’ I prayed fervently in my mind.
After another long sigh, James broke the silence and said, “Because my son said that you’ve been… hospitable, to say the least, I shall spare you for what happened.”
“Thank you, Your Majesty! You are very gracious!” his page threw himself onto the ground. One of the guards followed his lead.
“Let this be a lesson that whenever my family needs to have a word with me, they’re allowed to enter my study,” Jason continued with his sermon. He added, “Whether I am in the middle of anything, they are always welcome to enter. Is that understood?”
“Yes, Your Majesty,” the first guard said.
“We will remember it, Your Majesty,” the other followed after.
His page answered next, “I shall inform this rule to all servants of the castle.”
“Make sure of that. I don’t want this to happen again in the future,” James said as he finally put his arms down. I stood up and he continued, “You should be grateful that my son was merciful enough to convince me not to punish you.”
Without hesitation, the three men turned their attention to me and threw themselves on the floor. “Thank you, Your Highness! Thank you for your mercy!” they all said in unison.
“Please, gentlemen, stand up. There’s no need to thank me,” I replied. As they slowly stood up, I added, “You were only doing what you were told to do. You did nothing wrong.”
James then looked at me. “Would you like to come inside? The lords are with me. I hope you don’t mind,” he asked in a lighter tone.
I nodded with a smile, contained in a firm, straight line.
James entered first and Gonzalo gestured for me to follow. He stood on my right side and showed the path inwards.
“Thank you, young prince.”
“Thank you, Your Highness,” the three men thanked me, shaking my hand as I walked past them. I gave them a light nod and proceeded into James’ study.
~*~*~*~
Upon entering, my eyes immediately landed on the lords of our court. There were only five of them. Perhaps, the others weren’t available or required to attend. And as the doors closed behind me, they all stood up and gave their greetings. “Your Highness.”
I came to a stop as they greeted me. Along with Gonzalo, I paid them my respect with a bow.
“Good day to you, my lords,” I said as I approached them. I shook hands with them and continued, “I trust that everything is well with all of you.”
“We are all doing well. Thank you for asking, Your Highness,” one of them answered with a smile.
“He’s all grown up now, isn’t he?” James remarked with a proud smile as he stood before his chair.
“Indeed, Your Majesty,” another lord replied. “And to think, it feels like it was only yesterday when he was sprinting all around the castle,” he continued, which earned a brief chuckle from everybody.
“Yes, that seemed like it wasn’t a long time ago. But, before we go further down the trail of memories, I would like to have a word with my son. We shall resume our discussion tomorrow morning,” James said. He then followed it with a question, “Would you care to join us for dinner, gentlemen?”
The lord on my right replied, “I don’t think that’s necessary, Your Majesty. We don’t want to be a bother to you and your family.”
James raised his hand to stop him from speaking. “Don’t think of such things. My family and I would love to have you all with us for dinner.” Turning to Gonzalo, James called, “Gonzalo?”
Coming out from the corner, Gonzalo bowed to James, “Your Majesty?”
“Have the servants prepare five more seats on the dining table. We will be having a few guests with us tonight,” James instructed.
“As you wish, Your Majesty,” Gonzalo bowed.
James added, “Kindly bring them to the accepting room as well. I need a moment alone with Robert.”
“Yes, Your Majesty,” Gonzalo bowed again. He approached the lords and gestured for the door. “Gentlemen, if you please.”
After their quick bow to James, Gonzalo opened the door for them and they all left without another word.
As the door shut tight, I turned to James and asked, “What is it that you wanted to tell me?”
“Have a seat, Robert,” James replied as he sat on his chair.
I sighed as I took the chair on the left side of his table.
“I already went through all the reports that you took care of on my behalf,” he said as he looked through the scattered reports on his desk. He continued, “I must say that I’m quite impressed with how you handle each and every one of them. I’ve sent more to your study, and I trust that you’ll take care of them as soon as possible.”
“Thank you for your trust and confidence in me. I’ll have them sorted as soon as possible,” I replied as I crossed my legs, putting my hands on my knee. “Most of my time is focused on handling those reports, anyways.”
“Although,” his tone suddenly changed as he reached for a certain report, “There is this one report where perhaps, you may have missed something.” He handed it to me as he added, “I need you to take a second look at it.”
As soon as the document landed in my hands, I was even more confused. How could I even miss anything? I would always review each report five more times before it was sent back to his desk.
I opened the report and read quickly through it. It was from the orphanage that we monitored closely. They asked for additional monetary support since more children had been arriving at their doorstep. I approved of this request because the last thing that I wanted to happen was for the children to struggle. After all, no one supported them financially but us.
“I don’t understand what you’re pertaining to, James,” I said as I looked back at him. Closing the said document, I continued, “Everything in this report is reasonable, which is why I agreed to it. To take in further consideration is unnecessary.”
“Robert,” he said after a sigh, “We can’t just approve every single request of monetary support. As far as I know, you have already approved twenty requests from our people. We still need to think of ourselves. We must not allow our treasury to run dry.”
My frows burrowed. “Why must we think of ourselves when there are people who require our help?” I asked, even more baffled.
“To maintain our home, our lifestyle, and every servant in this castle comes with a cost. Money doesn’t grow on trees. We work hard for it,” James replied.
“We work for our money?” I asked with a brow arched. I continued, “Must I remind you, James, that the money we use to support ourselves, the money that keeps our economy afloat comes from our people. They are the ones who break their bones just to earn money.”
I added, “The money that we use to feed everyone in this castle, as well as for random constructions within the castle grounds, are the people’s taxes. Technically, they are the ones who are feeding us.” I didn’t allow him to reason out. All I could think of was he was willing to let the children suffer. And I wasn’t happy with that.
He snarled, “They are able to feed themselves because of me. They have their livelihood because I allowed trade in this kingdom.”
“Without the people who chose to work in your trading business, you won’t have any money to collect,” I snapped.
His nose flared as his lips formed a firm line. He tapped his desk, a usual sign that he was frustrated with me.
“I may not be king yet, James,” I said as I leaned closer to him, “But, with those approved monetary supports, you wouldn’t be in your position right now. And you already lost so much money in the past months. You should be thanking me for keeping you in your throne.”
He slowly laid back onto his chair, clearly defeated from the conversation. He had no right to be furious about this. This was about our people, the very people who chose him as king. He once said that in order to stay in power, we should cater to our people’s beck and call. That's what I did for him, and now, he was mad about it?
I put the report back on the table as I stood. “This is good to go. If you refuse to heed my advice, then I suggest that you prepare for the outpouring of outrage from the orphanage,” I remarked. I added, “And if that news spreads out to the entire kingdom, I can only pray the our people will still love and understand your decision.”
I turned around and walked away from him. As a royal, I was taught to never forget what was important: the ones we should protect were our people. Should he decide to put his pride as his priority, I had no fault in it.
Currently in my study as I skimmed through the new reports on my desk. Today didn’t end well, but what should I expect? Aside from my impossible relationship with James, my current situation with Laura abruptly crossed my mind. All of a sudden, everything stopped. Laura… What I did to her this afternoon was just… gut-wrenching. Unacceptable. I could only hope that she would forgive me. But, what could I do to express my guilt? What should I say in order to earn her forgiveness? I turned to the table by the window. And I immediately caught sight of a pen, on top of a few pieces of paper. A letter! Perhaps, a letter could help resolve some of the pain I caused between us? I shook my head as I removed myself from my thoughts. Why was I even too troubled about her? We just met and yet, she had some sort of impact on me. What I did to her shouldn’t matter this much to me. But why was I feeling this way? Instead of going back to work, I contemplated even more on what I should do. Sho
Water rushed in from every corner that I turned to. As I ran through the long corridor, I searched for the ones I was with. Everyone was screaming as they ran to save their lives. And all I could do was to follow the direction where everybody was headed. “Robert!” a voice shouted my name from behind me. I turned around to see who it was, only to be carried in the arms of a man. “Hold onto me, son,” the man said as he pulled my head closer to his shoulder. “You’re safe. I’m here.” It was my father and he was running in the same direction that I was. “Darling, hurry!” a woman in front of us shouted as she turned her head to our direction. It was Mother. She was holding my sister’s hand as we all ran. My father was about to catch up to them when suddenly, he slipped. He lost his grip on me and I slid to the left side of the ship. It was already filled with water, deep enough for me to be submerged into. “Robert! Hold on!” my father screamed as I did my best to keep my head above
On my way to the kitchen, I accidentally bumped into James. Just the last person that I wanted to see. “James!” I exclaimed as I stopped on my tracks. “Robert,” he greeted as he looked at me, baffled. “Why are you running in the hallway? You know how I feel about that.” “My apologies. I just needed to get to the stables as quickly as possible,” I replied. “Stables? Are you headed somewhere?” he asked. I froze for a second. ‘Great! I just gave him even more reason to question me,’ I thought to myself, scolding myself for my carelessness. ‘Think of an explanation and quick! It has to be acceptable!’ “I’m quite late for my time with Lady today. I’ve decided to take upon the responsibility to give her a bath, and everything else that she would need for today,” I reasoned. “Didn’t you assign that to some of the servants? Why the sudden interest in taking care of Lady?” he asked. I did my best to calm my nerves. I couldn’t show him that I was panicking deep inside. If he found out
“Laura,” I stood in a heartbeat as I walked towards her. “What are you doing here?” she asked. “I came to see you.” “Did you receive my letter?” she asked after she paused for a bit. “Yes,” I nodded. “I told you: if you follow the instructions, I will receive your response.” “I still don’t understand the instructions that you wrote,” she shook her head. “All I told myself was to do what you told me to do.” “Well, you did a good job,” I smiled as I gently patted her head. I froze as I realised what I just did. I pulled my hand back and we both stood in silence for a bit. I then cleared my throat. “Would you like to have a seat?” I asked as I gestured towards the bench. “Um, of course,” she smiled. I stepped aside, allowing her to sit down before me. When she was comfortable, I sat beside her. “Is there something wrong?” she asked. “I’m surprised that you’re here during this time of the day. Don’t you have duties, responsibilities to take care of?” “I already finished some of
Ronald peeked out at us from the entrance of the bakery. “I hope that your short time with your friend is enough because you’re needed back inside,” he snapped at Laura. “Oh, of course. Tell Grandpa Ben that I’ll be right inside,” she replied after a nod. Ronald scoffed as he went back inside. “Why do you always have to put up with him?” I asked as she turned back to me. “I have no other choice but to bear with him,” she shrugged after a short sigh. “And I can’t simply remove him from the bakery. Only Grandpa Ben has the authority to do that.” “Then, why does he let Ronald treat you like that? He has no respect for you,” I complained. She giggled before she cupped my face. “Will you calm down, Robert? You shouldn’t be bothered by what’s happening here. You don’t even work here,” she replied in an attempt to comfort me. I held onto her hands, caressing them with my thumbs. “I’m just worried that he might do something to you. Something I can never forgive,” I said. She sighed
Rushing towards James’ door, the guards immediately blocked my path. Perhaps, they sensed my anger from a mile away. “Let me in,” I ordered. “Your Highness, His Majesty is--” “I don’t care whatever he’s doing right now. Let me in!” I shouted, not caring even if my voice was heard throughout the castle. “Is that your son, Your Majesty?” I heard one of the lords inside say. I looked at the guards and they were confused, absolutely having no clue what to do. “Are you going to open the door or are you going to wait for me to explode and have you both sent to the dungeon?” I threatened. They quickly removed their spears, giving me a way to barge into the study. The lords and James suddenly looked in my direction as the doors swung open and hit the wall behind them. “Robert,” was all that James could utter at the very sight of me. “May I have a word with you?” I replied, trying to control my anger. The lords looked at each other. “Your Highness, we’re about to go on a trip right
What was she doing there? Was she following me this whole time? Did she know what I was up to? “Where did you get that?” I asked, eyes wide opened as I pointed at the basket. “Oh, I visited a bakery in the Mortal Realm because of a friend I made there,” she said. “It’s been quite a long time since we last spoke to one another and I had a lot of stories to tell.” My heart skipped a beat horrified. Somehow, I felt like she already told her friend about us. “And stories are these, if you don’t mind me asking?” “It’s mostly about my life,” she replied as she opened the basket. “How my life has been, what occupies my time recently and…” she slowly stopped. “Did you mention anything about us?” I asked. “It’s not like that–” “Did you tell someone about us?” I asked once more, not allowing her to give an explanation. “Robert, let me–” “I don’t need an explanation, Mallory,” I cut her off again. My blood boiled again as I continued, “Just answer the question: did you mention anything a
In the middle of a very important report, someone knocked on my door before it opened. My page peeked his head through the doorway. “Your Highness?” he asked. “Hm?” I raised a brow, not turning my attention away from the report. “Gonzalo is here with Mallory, Your Highness,” he informed. I closed the report and put it on my bedside table. “Let Mallory in. Have Gonzalo bring my dinner up here,” I instructed. “Yes, Your Highness,” he left the door open and Mallory entered. “Close the door, please,” I said as I stood up, walking towards her. Mallory gently shut the door behind her and walked over to me. “You asked for me? That’s odd.” “We need to discuss my unplanned introduction to your friend,” I said. “Robert, if you don’t want to, I understand–” “I did say I’m letting you introduce me to your friend, am I correct?” I interrupted, my hands on my waist. “Oh, thank you, Robert! Thank you!” She was about to hug me but I stopped her, blocking her with my hand. “I’m not finished
A prince had a peaceful night all to himself. His fireplace burned brightly as it kept his quarters warm against the harsh, cold atmosphere outside the old castle he currently resided in. A direct view of the beautiful moon outside his window. And a scrumptious meal right in front of him.He happily dug into his meal, which was something that he hadn’t done in a long while. Not after all the sleepless nights that he had. As well as the days where he pretended in front of his family.‘Ah, finally,’ he thought to himself as he cut through the tender meat on his plate. ‘A night where I can finally enjoy my food.’Just as soon as he was going to take a bite, a knock came upon his door. He groaned as he put his fork down. “Who is it?” he answered, irritated. The door creaked open and a servant called out of the dark. “Prince Benjamin?”“I thought I made it clear that I wanted to be left alone for a few hours,” Benjamin replied as he scratched his forehead.“My apologies, Your Highness, but
“Grandpa Ben?” my brows knitted together as I called out.“What are you doing here? Where did you come from?” I asked as he approached us.Grandpa Ben stopped right before us. He immediately glared at Gonzalo. But Gonzalo didn’t back down. He stared right back at Grandpa Ben.Grandpa Ben then cleared his throat and returned to me. “Go ahead. Bring Laura back. However, I want for the both of you to return safely. If I don’t see you with her, I will never forgive you even in death.”“Have you no regards to his life?!” Gonzalo protested, making us turn to him. “For the sake of getting your daughter back, you’re willing to put the prince at risk?! Don’t you mortals ever think of anything but yourselves?!”“And what about you Immortals? Don’t you do the same?” Grandpa Ben snapped. “I may look like a weak, old man. But I’m well-versed with stories of your kind. I never imagined that the myths of gods and goddesses being selfish were actually true. But you,” he pointed a finger at Gonzalo, “
The moon shone high in the sky as I looked out my bedroom window. The whole room was pitch black, dark as the night sky above. And only the powerful moonlight was able to illuminate my room.Well, at least a portion of it.I was incredibly frustrated with everything that I never bothered to light my torches as night fell. After I returned from James’ study, I remained in my room and did absolutely nothing. I simply sat by the window and drank tea without any signs of stopping. I also requested for an early dinner, an attempt to avoid James during dinner time.I just wanted to be left alone.I just wanted some space.‘I just want progress. Was that too much to ask for?’ my mind shouted, helpless as no one could hear it. And no one bothered to listen or even ask me.Then, a knock on my door echoed throughout the room. But I didn’t answer. I already rejected persistent knockings as I remained in my quarters. Even though someone from the other end called for my name, I never made my prese
Bethilda’s mouth hung in disbelief.“Your Highness, my heart's already breaking for the sacrifice that I am to make. Against my own beliefs and wishes, I am giving you my men to aid your cause. Just because I want them to have some time to prepare, that doesn’t mean I am on the other side of this debacle,” Bethilda protested. She added, “Your impatience will put their lives at risk. And that’s a risk that I will never be willing to take.”I pressed my lips together as my nose flared after a deep sigh. Truth be told, I gave my full respect to Bethilda as she put her servants before anything. However, I couldn’t wait again for a longer time. We already wasted too much time here and we never made any sort of progress in terms of the rescue mission.I cared for Bethilda’s household the same as I did for my own. But we couldn’t afford to wait another week before we could proceed. We didn’t even have the slightest clue on what could be happening within Benjamin’s territory. The mere thought
Bethilda’s eyes widened whilst James immediately turned to my direction. This was the fastest solution that I could think of. James already exhausted all of his efforts for this debacle. I had to do something, even if he didn’t like it.Bethilda looked to James for a moment before she returned to me. “Whatever the reason is for this sudden request of aid, I am afraid that it will do you more harm than good,” she answered. She added, “My soldiers aren’t fully trained for combat. I only trained them to protect and to distract enemies. And besides, I don’t think that His Majesty is in favour of this decision of yours, Your Highness.”“James has already given his all for our cause. We don’t know who to turn to and we are running out of time,” I answered. James’ stare never left but I paid no mind. I had no time to argue with him.Bethilda asked, “Have you reached out to other kingdoms? I know that you are attempting to rescue a friend. If that is the case, shouldn’t it be advised to ask t
“I already sent some of the guards to gather more troops back home.“We don’t know how many men Benjamin has to protect him,” James replied. “As much as possible, I don’t want to spill too much blood, especially within their territory. I don’t want this debacle to cause a scandal. And I also don’t want to destroy our alliance with them. At the same time, we can’t waste the lives of more men, both on his side and ours.”For James to still honour our alliance with Eastern Sun, even after what Benjamin did, was frustrating.Benjamin betrayed me. Trust and loyalty were values that I held in high regard. But Benjamin disregarded that, all because he didn’t get what he wanted. For that action alone, the friendship between our kingdoms was also destroyed. How could we possibly trust a traitor? Even if that person was our ally, it already destroyed their credibility as someone we trusted deeply. However, I understood why James was still worried about the alliance. Eastern Sun wasn’t simply a
Marcus chuckled as he shrugged. He looked down to his feet and replied, “My loyalty to the duchess is more than just of a servant, Your Highness. And even though that was the case for me,” Marcus returned to me, “I never overstepped nor did I ever use my emotions to my advantage. I respected her as my mistress. The person who gave me a home and a new life. Nothing more, nothing less.”Marcus’ response rendered me speechless.Who would’ve thought that a servant would develop strong feelings towards their mistress?Perhaps because of Bethilda’s care towards Marcus, his gratitude slowly turned into something else. Unfortunately, in this world - or in any other world in that retrospect - a relationship between a servant and their master would never be acceptable.I could only feel the ache on Marcus’ behalf as I once felt the same for Laura. That feeling that we wished we were born within the same kind of beings, just so nothing would be able to stand in the way of what we felt for each o
“Thank you for accompanying me all the way here.“For now,” I turned to the two guards behind me, “I would like to have a moment alone.”After I woke up from my nap, I decided to take a quick stroll around the castle grounds. Luckily, the guards told me that Bethilda had a small garden. So, I asked them to show me its location. The two guards shared glances with each other, worried and unsure. One of them replied, “But Your Highness, His Majesty specifically said that should you ask for our company, we are not to leave you alone. Especially when you are outside the castle.”I chuckled. “There is nothing to be scared of, gentlemen. With the location of the duchess’ residence, it’s a bit impossible for enemies to attack from within these walls,” I explained. “At the same time, I don't think that these walls are penetrable from all fronts.”The guards looked at each other again, still uncertain of what to do.I sighed, which made them turn to me. “I assure you, I can manage on my own. I
“And how long have you been in service within the duchess’ household?” I asked the maid in front of me.An hour had already passed and I was still only halfway through the inspection. I had to be very careful when I asked certain questions. At the same time, I had to discern personalities behind prim and proper facades.I couldn’t rush the process even if I wanted to. I didn’t know who could possibly have dark motives against Bethilda so I had to proceed with caution. I didn’t want to be the cause of her death, all because I chose the wrong people to serve her.“I have been serving the duchess for seven years,” the maid replied.“Ah, that would mean that you are fairly new within the household,” I said as I wrote the information down. “In your few years of service, how familiar are you with everything?”Her response was interrupted when my doors suddenly opened. We turned our heads and watched as James entered my room. Immediately, we stood and gave our greetings.“Did I interrupt any
