Chapter 1

Freedom

 Lexie's POV

"Alexandra Thompson, you have been granted your freedom." Your appeal has been approved. "From this day forward, you are no longer confined to this cell. You are now a free woman," the warden announced, his voice firm but laced with empathy.

All I could do was stare at the middle-aged man in disbelief, my mind racing with his words.

“What did you just say, Mr Felix?” I asked in shock. I had to make sure I heard him clearly.

“Congratulations, Miss Lexi. Try as much as possible to stay out of trouble, so you don't come back here. You could lose your senses. Stay safe,” He flashed a smile at me before walking away.

Goodness! This was finally happening! I've finally been released from this hell hole after three painful years.

After what felt like forever, I stood up from the bench as I made my way out of the cold, grey prison walls, feeling the warm sun on my skin for the first time in three years.

I took a deep breath, to calm my frazzled nerves. I can't believe what the Warden said a while ago.

Freedom! I was free once again!

It was a word I had almost forgotten. It was something I had thought I would never experience again. I had thought that I'd rot away in that cold prison.

But here I was, standing outside the prison gates, with a chance to start anew, with a chance to get back at my enemies for everything they have done to me and my mother and reclaim her company.

I closed my eyes and my mother's smile appeared in my head. A lump formed in my throat as I remembered her warm hugs and soft voice.

Tears pricked at the back of my eyes as I whispered. “I’ll clear my name and I'll avenge your death, I promise you, mother,”

I'm not surprised that none of my family members were here to support me on my first day of freedom. Well, what was I expecting?

They wouldn't want to be around a murderer. I thought as I made my way back to my family's residence, unsure of what to expect.

Throughout my three years in prison, they never visited me or showed any concern for my well-being. The only person who cared about me was my mother and now she was late.

I mean why would I kill my mother? Why would I kill the only woman that had shown me nothing but love, like I was the one that exists?

The memory of the trail still burned deep within me. I recalled the feeling of helplessness as I stood before the judge, my words falling on deaf ears.

‘Guilty of the crime charged' He'd declared, without giving me a chance to defend myself. It was Claudia and my father's doing. I needed no soothsayer to tell me that.

My stepmother was an influential personnel in our country.

Even my own father testified against me, saying I was responsible for his wife's death.

I'll get back at all of them and that's a promise.

As I got closer to the house, I could hear the sound of laughter and music coming from inside and I creased my brows in confusion, wondering what was going on. Were they trying to welcome me back home?

'You wish!’ I rolled my eyes.

I swung the door open and was greeted by the sounds of laughter and music. The space buzzed with chatter, the clattering of glasses, and the pounding of the music.

I saw a big banner that read “Rest in peace, bitch .” in big bold letters. The room was decorated with balloons and ribbons and the tables were filled with food and drinks.

Rest in peace? Did someone die? But if someone dies, they shouldn't be celebrating. They should be mourning for heaven's sake. There weren't any strangers here. It was just people from Claudia's family.

Claudia saw me standing there and immediately her expression changed from joy to shock, her hands flying to her mouth.

“What the hell?” she gasped and I creased my brows in confusion, as I wondered what was going on.

“How is this possible?” She asked again and I scoffed. “What are you talking about, Claudia?”

Claudia's voice dripped with venom. “I paid to have you taken care of, Lexie, but those fools messed up,”

Her eyes blazed with her hatred for me. So raw! So deep! Just like the one she has for my mother, who was once her best friend. “You are a murderer, Lexie. You deserve to rot in prison,”

 “You what?” I asked again.

“Are you deaf? I paid those wardens to kill you and here you are standing in front of me,” she hissed in annoyance. “Those fools. They must have sent the wrong body,” she muttered under her breath, but I heard her clearly.

My eyes expanded in surprise as Claudia's words lingered in the atmosphere. The space started to whirl around me and I sensed as if I'd been hit in the stomach. At that very moment, the reality struck me hard: Claudia had financed my assassination.

Wait a minute! If she had paid those wardens to kill me, who released me? My mind was still reeling with shock when my boyfriend, Ethan, rushed forward.

“Ethan?” I called and he turned around to meet my gaze. His eyes met mine and for a moment, I saw a flicker of guilt. But it was quickly replaced by shock. “Lexie, I…I thought you were dead,” he stuttered.

“You are alive?” He asked again, stunned and I shook my head in disbelief.

“All of you wanted me dead, huh? You wanted me dead so you could have my mother's company forever, huh?”

“I hate all of you and I—” I stopped talking when a little girl of about two years rushed towards Ethan's direction, yelling ‘daddy, daddy’.

My heart sank as I realized that the little girl looks uncannily like him. She has the same eyes as him and I needed no soothsayer to tell me that she was his child, but I just didn't want to jump into conclusions yet.

“Who is she, Ethan?” I asked, trying to keep my voice steady.

“She's my daughter,” he said, his words dropping like a bombshell. Daughter? Did he move on so fast?

“You didn't even wait until I was dead.”

Before I could say something else, a pregnant Margaret made her way towards our direction. She seemed like she was chasing someone and when I saw her coming towards Ethan's direction, I knew that the little girl must be her daughter and that would only mean that—

“You moved on so quickly. Did you even care about me at all?” I scoffed. “You are no better than my stepmother - selfish , manipulative,”

It was until now that Margaret noticed my presence in the room. Her stride faltered as she saw me and the next minute, fear flashed in her eyes before she regained her composure.

 “Lexi, you're…you're alive,” she stammered.

She turned around to face me with a stunned expression, her shock mirroring her mother's.

“What the hell? How are you alive?” She asked as she turned to face her mother. “How is this possible, mother?” She asked, her voice trembling slightly with fear.

“Mother, I thought you said you had everything taken care of. How did Lexie escape? How is she still alive?”

“Incompetent fools! They were supposed to get rid of you, and now, they've gotten rid of someone else!” Claudia hissed, her face twisting into rage.

My release must have thwarted whatever plans she had up her sleeves, else she wouldn't be so frustrated.

If she had paid the wardens to kill me, why did they release me? Who was behind all of these? I needed answers.

“Wait a minute, mother! Who did we bury?” Margaret asked. “If this bitch is still alive, that means we buried the wrong person,” she said as she gasped. “They sent the wrong corpse, mother,” she cried out.

Margaret's eyes widened in panic and horror. “What's going to happen now, mother? Lexi was supposed to be dead. Our plans can't work out now that she's hear,”

Please author, when next are you dropping the last chapter? I'm pissed already ...‍♀️. By the way, I love Lexi's revenge. The best revenge a lady can give to a man is to get married to his father or his uncle. That way, he won't ever mess with you. Good job in the book though. I love it ...

Go, Lexi. What a lovely read. I enjoyed every bit of it. Although I'll not rate it a five-star because you won't upload two chapters daily. Maybe when you start uploading regularly, I'll give it a five starrrrr. Thanks

A Night of Passion
Lexis's POV I stumbled out of the house, my heart heavy with the height of Ethan's betrayal. I can't believe that he would do such a thing to me. Moving on so fast and worst of all, with my step sister. I swear, if it were someone else, I wouldn't have been so angry like I am now. I have long expected a lot of things from my family. Even though I was still shocked that my step mother would pay the wardens to kill me, I'm not surprised. She is a cruel woman and she would do anything to get whatever she wants. If she could kill my mother, who was once her best friend, just because she wanted the company, she would do anything. If she could seduce my father and get pregnant for him when my mother was still barren, she would do anything. So I'm not even surprised that she wanted me dead. She wants to wipe me off the face of the earth so that she would keep the company to herself, I guess. But never for once did it cross my mind that Ethan would betray me too. The pain and anger th

Meeting Again
Lexi's POV Unable to bear it anymore, I turned and walked away, leaving my family to their mocking laughter. I have a long and difficult road ahead of me, but I was determined to succeed. I wanted to reclaim my mother's company, Eclipse Holdings, and restore it back to its former glory. I would get my mother's properties and I'll clear my name. I'll let everyone know that I wasn't responsible for my mother's death. I'll let everyone know that the real culprits are my father, my step mother and step sister. Before anything else, I got to the bank and withdrew some funds from my account. Claudia and my father have freezed all my accounts, including my mom's own, but little did they know that there was one bank account left. Only my mother and I have access to it. When I was done, I made my way straight to the cab station, ready to go to my mother's company, my heart racing with anticipation. I hadn't set foot in the building since her death and the thought of going back the

Unexpected Event
Lexi's POV He smiled, his eyes crinkling at the corners. “Yes. I'm sorry for hitting you with my car” he said. I felt a shiver run down my spine at the huskiness of his voice. “It's fine,” I said as I tried to leave the bed, but he pushed me back gently. “You can't leave. The doctor said you need to rest,” He said softly, but I shook my head. “I can't stay here. I have important things to attend to,” I said firmly, but he shook his head. “You have to rest. You have been through hell already,” He said. I couldn't help but feel that he wanted something from me. “What do you want from me?” I asked as I folded my hands across my chest and he chuckled. “You are indeed smart,” he said, as he winked at me. He stood up from where he sat and walked towards the window, with his hands behind his back but he turned to face me. “First things first, we have to introduce ourselves. I am Julian,” “Lexi,” I gave a curt reply. “I know all about you, Lexi,” he said, his eyes glinting wit

A whore
Lexi's POV “He is your boyfriend?” Julian asked and I gritted my teeth in anger. By ‘is’ he was indirectly acknowledging that we were still together. “Not at all, Julian. He's my ex. We are no longer together” I answered, my eyes never for once leaving Ethan's face. Ethan's eyes narrowed, his jaw clenched. “So, you are the one who has been fucking my father, huh? You are the bitch that my father wants me to meet, huh?” He sneered and I rolled my eyes. “You were so desperate for a man's touch that you had to go after my father. Just how shameless can you be, Lexi? It could have been someone else for heaven's sake” I felt a surge of rage at his words, but I kept my cool. I can't let him know that his words were getting to me. Ethan was a punk and he would be pleased to know that his words were affecting me. I can't give him that satisfaction. “To hell with you, Ethan. You have no right to speak to me like that,” I spat my voice barely audible. “You betrayed me by fucking my

Don't play with me
Lexi's POV I shrugged Julian away, my face burning with embarrassment. “I…I didn't mean to kiss you like that. It was just to prove a point to your son. That's all,” I really hope he buys my words, but instead his eyes sparkled with a mischievous glint, his gaze holding mine. “I think you did mean it, Lexi. And I meant it too. I want us to continue this…from where we stopped,” I stepped away from him, my face still burning with embarrassment. “No, Julian. I didn't mean it like that,” My voice was firm, but my eyes betrayed me, darting away from his intense gaze. “Are you sure about that little princess?” He asked as he took slow and steady steps closer to me. The way he said the word ‘little princess’, sent a shiver down my spine. “Come on, Lexi,” I chided myself as I stepped back, trying to provide a room to be able to run away. But he didn't give me any chance. He placed his hands on my waist and pulled me closer to him. “I swear to God, I didn't mean it like that, Julia

Tragedy strikes
Lexi's POV “You bitch!” Claudia scoffed. Just as she was about to lunge at me again, my father's voice rang out, his eyes flashing with anger. “That's enough, Claudia,” he said, his voice firm, his deep tone echoing through the room. I watched as Claudia's face turned red with rage, her eyes blazing with fury. “Just stop it, Jenkins. You are the reason why she is a spoiled princess,’’ She hissed and I rolled my eyes. “If there is one person who is spoiled here, then it's your daughter.” I said through gritted teeth. “How dare you talk back to me?” Claudia's face turned red with rage, her eyes blazing with fury. “Please, Claudia. This is not why we called her here. Don't screw this up,” Claudia tried to protest, but she held herself. She seemed to realize that she couldn't take on my father like she always did. At least not at this moment. She shot me a death glare before walking away, her high heels clicking on the marble floor. Margaret glared at me too before stalking

YOU ARE DEAD TO ME
Lexi's Point Of View “Oh my goodness!” Margaret's scream sounded behind me. I was too stunned to move or say anything. My eyes were fixed on the small figure lying down at the foot of the stairs. “What have you done to my daughter?” Claudia's growl echoed through the room. It was only then that I snapped back to reality, but even though I did, I couldn't move. I just stood there watching them as they quickly dragged the little girl up from the floor. “Somebody call an ambulance!” Margaret cried softly while shaking her daughter, but the little girl remained unresponsive. “Call an ambulance, you blind bad. You are the main reason why she's in this condition.” My father's voice sounded behind me, nudging me. My hands moved on their own accord and I reached for my phone at the back of my pants. How could they be asking me to call an ambulance when the best they could have done was to find a way and get her to the hospital. Well, since that's what they wanted, I wasn't in the mood

HIS REGRETS.
Author's Point Of View The whiskey in Ethan’s glass was the same shade of amber as Lexi’s eyes—back when she used to look at him like he was her entire world, like he was all that mattered, like there was no one else, nothing else. Back before she was sent to prison like a criminal, before betrayal, before his father’s wedding ring was placed around her finger. He swirled the ice cubes absently, watching them clink against the glass. The bar around him was glinting with neon lights and filled with the sounds of drunken laughter, but Ethan barely heard any of it. Not when his mind was filled with a lot of memories, old memories that have come back to taunt him after three years. Lexi's smile, the way she tucked her hair behind her ear when she was nervous, or the way she fondled with her fingers like a puppy whenever she wanted him to do something for her, the sound of her voice whispering ‘I love you Ethan's in the dark. And the other memories. The arrest. The trial. The way

HER PAST IS HERS
JULIAN’S POINT OF VIEW The night air was filled with the harsh scent of tobacco and the distant murmur and cars of the city below. I leaned back in my chair and watched the scenery with great interest, the familiar weight of a cigarette between my fingers. The balcony of my study had always been my refuge…. A place where my past, the heavy weight of my past don't suffocate me as much as my room did. It was a place where I can boldly let go of my problems without feeling guilty about it. All of a sudden, the door creaked open behind me, the sound echoing through the stillness, as it tore me away from my thoughts. I didn't need to go around to know who it was. I needed no soothsayer to point it out. Only one person would ever barge into my space without knocking. His presence had always been like a storm rolling in uninvited. My unfilial son! Somehow I had gotten used to his obnoxious behaviour. I just had to force myself. "Still poisoning yourself huh, old man?" His voi
