Chapter 8

“Whose grave is it?”

The man quickly covered Liam’s mouth.

“Shh! Don’t ask questions you shouldn’t. All you need to know is that while there’s chaos and bloodshed at the base of the mountain, no one dares to fire a single shot up here.”

Liam’s eyes widened as he stared at the grave, finding it terrifying! There could be gunfire and explosions below, yet no one dared to disturb the peace of the place?

“Master, it’s been a long time.”

Ethan opened the bottle of whiskey and slowly poured it in front of the tombstone.

“I came in a hurry this time, so I didn’t bring the good stuff, but I know you never liked drinking anyway.

“You told me to look after Riveria for a year, but I did it for three. In those three years, I’ve watched Riveria turn from a chaotic place to a land where people can live in peace.

“Your student, I, didn’t let you down. I’ve turned Riveria into the place you always dreamed of. I’ve done all I can, and now that Riveria is thriving, it’s time for me to move on.”

He poured out the last of the whiskey and softly said, “Goodbye.”

Suddenly, a fierce wind howled across the mountain, snow swirling in the air.

Ethan slowly turned and began his descent down the mountain, moving through the crowd. With each step he took, the snow crunched beneath his feet and the wind howled. Still, he did not look back.

At that moment, the man in the red suit lifted his head and shouted, “Farewell, Old Master!”

All the other men in suits shouted in unison.

“Farewell, Old Master!”

“Farewell, Old Master!”

“Farewell, Old Master!”

As their voices echoed across the sky, the wind and snow intensified.

Liam gulped. He knew Ethan was powerful and well-connected. There was also no doubt about his character as even the people of Crestwood highly respected him. However, he did not expect someone as formidable as the South Regent to revere and fear Ethan so much!

Now, seeing all those people paying their respects to Ethan’s master, Liam also felt an overwhelming urge to kneel. Only after witnessing it with his own eyes did he realize how influential Ethan was. Why would someone that amazing need to resort to embezzlement or bribery?

“It’s over. We’re doomed.”

Liam’s heart sank. If Ethan were sentenced, Riveria would be doomed.

Half an hour later, Ethan returned to the foot of the mountain and got into Liam’s car.

“Let’s head back,” he said softly.

Even though Liam was the police chief, he was afraid to say a word. He obediently got into the driver’s seat, not even considering letting his subordinate drive. He did not dare to nor trust anyone else to do it!

Before starting the car, Liam glanced ahead, and what he saw made him freeze. All the hairs on his body stood on end, and he almost broke out into cold sweat.

The sides of the road were lined with suited men. They stood solemnly and respectfully, perfectly aligned like statues of warriors.

At that moment, Liam’s heart was racing, and his hands were damp with sweat. As the chief of police, he had seen all kinds of stuff before, but he had never seen such a spectacle!

He gulped and nervously started the car. Just then, voices, unified and powerful, broke through the air.

“Farewell, Lord Rivers!”

The sound reverberated through the nearby area, followed by echoes from further away.

“Farewell, Lord Rivers!”

“Farewell, Lord Rivers!”

“Farewell, Lord Rivers!”

The cries echoed again and again, growing distant.

Liam was so shaken by the scene that he almost forgot how to drive. He had to pinch his leg hard and use the sharp pain to calm himself down before he started the car and drove away.
