I told everything I knew to Wade's ex.

Wade had fleeced her out of a pretty penny, and I figured she might have a shot at clawing some back someday.

After tying up those loose ends, it was my turn to leave.

I mailed the divorce papers to Yvonne and left my lawyer to button up the rest.

Yvonne blew up my phone after she got the papers.

Because she called from a number I did not recognize, I answered just this once.

She tearfully pleaded on the other end, "Thomas, can't we just not get divorced? I can't live without you. No one else will ever be as good to me as you were."

I sighed. "Yvonne, we should part ways peacefully. Please, no more calls."

"I can't, I won't, and I..."

I did not wait for her to finish. I hung up.

After I packed up everything, I lay down on my bed. That was when Yvonne sent me a photo.

I opened it to find a picture of her in the bathtub, an apparent suicide attempt. A string of voice messages followed.
