Liliana

"Walk much, Sumner?"

Jarek Falcon, the most popular guy in school and my bully, stares down at me, smirking.

I'm walking through the hall on my way to fifth-period study hall when he trips me in front of a group of kids. He laughs as I lay face down on the linoleum floor, my books and supplies scattered all around. But Jarek doesn't care; it only makes him laugh harder.

"I-I'm sorry…."

"I-I'm sorry," he mimics me in a funny voice intended to make fun of me even more, "You are so pathetic, pauper. Maybe you should do online schooling so you don't have to take up so much space here for the rest of us."

Being a foster child and about to age out of the system, the only thing I wanted was to get through my last two years of high school. I was doing reasonably well until Jarek appeared and decided to become my shadow. Only he doesn't disappear on rainy days; he IS my rainy day.

"Please, stop, Jarek…." I sit here with my eyes closed. Whenever I try picking up my books, another person knocks them out of my hand.

The late bell rings for class, and the crowd begins to scatter, but not Jarek. No, he walks over and squats beside me. I can't look at him, so I keep my head down. This doesn't go over too well for him, and he grabs my hair, pulling my head up.

"Aw, did I embarrass my little pauper today?" He pulls a little harder when I don't answer and gets right in my face, "Answer me, pauper; I want the truth."

With eyes brimming with unshed tears, I answer, "Yes, Jarek."

"Good. This will be what happens from this day forward if you don't obey me, understand, pauper?"

"Yes, Jarek."

His devious smirk doesn't bode well for me, and what he says next only proves it, "You, my little pauper, will be my own personal assistant. I expect you to check in with me every day and do as I command, then just maybe, I won't have to repeat what was done today." He releases my hair only to caress my cheek, "One more thing, pauper, you are not allowed to talk to anyone here at school but me. Do you understand everything that I'm saying?"

I look into his dark, soulless eyes, and nod.

"Words, little pauper, I need words."

"Y-Yes, Jarek. I understand what you're saying."

"That's a good girl. Now, grab your shit and get to class. Come find me as soon as the bell rings."

"Yes, Jarek."

                                                                            ***

The rest of my day goes by way too fast, but only because I'm dreading another meeting with HIM. I don't know how I got on Jarek's radar, but now I'm stuck and don't know what to do. I don't want to be this guy's little bitch. He has so many other students who would happily do his bidding for him. He's that popular, so why must he pick me to do it?

When the last bell rings, I slowly make my way to the first floor, where the senior lockers are. I stop at the back of the group and just wait, but it isn't for long because Jarek's eyes land on me right away. As always, a flock of girls stands around him, hanging on his every word.

"Make room for my little pauper, ladies." He holds his hand out to me, but I don't take it as I walk through his groupies, who now give me the stink eye.

"It took you long enough, pauper. Classes have been over for almost ten minutes now."

"I'm sorry, I had to talk with my teacher," I lie.

"No, I always come first now, pauper; I don't care who it is."

"But…"

"Are you seriously going to argue with me?"

"No, but…"

"All I'm hearing are buts, pauper. How about I teach you your first lesson in disobeying me."

Jarek is sick and twisted. My body trembles at the thought of what he's going to do. Depravity is his game, and that's why I've always tried avoiding him, no matter how good-looking and popular he is or that his family owns half this town.

"On your knees, pauper."

Glancing between my bully and the floor, I slowly drop to my knees. All eyes are on me, Wanting to see what Jarek will make me do. The most embarrassing part is that many of these girls are ones who I've had multiple conversations with in the past, and now, all they see me as is Jarek's pathetic little pauper.

"I want you to kiss my shoe and apologize for being late. Make me believe it, pauper." He continues to smirk as he stares down at me on my knees.

All I can do is get it over with as fast as I can, so I bend over and kiss his feet. One of the girls shoves me from behind, causing me to almost knock him over. Thank God I catch myself before that happens.

"Again, pauper, and no messing around this time." There's amusement in his voice, but I ignore it the best I can, and once more, I place a kiss on top of each foot.

"I'm so sorry for being late. I promise that it will never happen again."

"I think one more time is needed, pauper, and remember, make it believable." I glance up, and I swear I see a flash of fire pass through his eyes, but I know it's only my imagination because, to me, he is the devil incarnate.

I quickly do his bidding and then look back up at him, "I'm so sorry, Jarek. I promise I will never keep you waiting again."

He studies me and then nods, "Very well, get up." He waits until I'm standing before him and then orders, "Open your bag."

I obey him and open my book bag, only for him to throw a few of his things into it. "These assignments are due tomorrow; I expect them in my hands before the first bell tomorrow morning."

I cry inside because I have so much of my own homework to finish that now I'm going to be up well into the wee hours of the morning doing his, too. This will not be good; I should do his work first to avoid messing it up when I get too tired.

"You're looking a little peaked, pauper," Jarek muses, and the girls around us snicker.

"No, I'm good. Is there anything else you will need?"

I must startle him with my question because he stares at me without saying anything. It isn't until another voice pipes in that he comes to, "I'm sure that's all, pauper." The voice says, and when I look, it's a pretty blonde named Megan, and she's wearing an ugly smirk. I turn back to Jarek and wait for his reply.

"That will be all, but I need you to put your number in my phone in case I need you for anything else." He hands me his phone, and I pause for a second before sighing and typing my number into his phone. My phone rings immediately, and he grins. "I needed to make sure you didn't give me a fake number."

I close up my bag and go to leave, but he grabs me and asks, "Hey, don't you have something to say to me?"

I furrow my brows, not knowing what to say to him, "I'm sorry, Jarek, but I don't know what you want me to say."

Anger crosses his expression. "How about being a little grateful that I'm choosing you to be my assistant when I can have the pick of the litter." He spins me, so I face the group of girls as he says, "All of them would do my bidding in a heartbeat, so show your appreciation."

"T-Thank you, Jarek, for choosing me. I will be forever grateful for your kindness." I stammer, wanting to puke at every word that comes from my mouth.

"You are very welcome, pauper. Now, get your ass home; you have a lot of homework to complete." He dismisses me with a wave, and the girls shove me to the back.

I'm grateful they got me away from him as quickly as they did. As soon as I'm free from the crowd, I turn and run down the hall, only stopping when I come to the set of double doors leading outside. I turn and find Jarek's eyes concentrated on me as he gives me a knowing smirk.   "You're looking a little peaked, pauper," Jarek muses, and the girls around us snicker.

Anger crosses his expression. "How about being a little grateful that I'm choosing you to be my assistant when I can have the pick of the litter." He spins me, so I face the group of girls as he says, "All of them would do my bidding in a heartbeat, so show your appreciation."

JarekI follow Liliana home, taking in the house that her foster parents have. It's not bad, nothing close to being delipidated or anything, which is a shame. I was looking forward to giving her shit about it. I'm running out of reasons to talk to my little pauper.I watch a young boy come toward the house after Liliana has gone in, and I stop him, "Hey, little man, are you Liliana's foster brother?"Maybe in another world, we would be perfect for one another, but not this one. Liliana Sumner was born on the wrong side of the tracks, and unlike me, when she lost her parents, she was put into the foster system; I was sent to live with my uncle and his wife. Sometimes, I wonder if I would have been better off going into the system, but I'm a Falcon, and Falcons always rise above everything and everyone. My life has been anything but rainbows and roses. Being from such an influential family keeps me from anyone or anything less than what we are. My uncle's lectures have been ingrained in

Tears burn behind my lids. Why am I letting him treat me like this? I should go to the principal or the guidance counselor about Jarek's behavior toward me. Unfortunately, his family owns this town, so I doubt anybody will help.I end up doing homework well past midnight, and when I wake up just before my alarm goes off, I find myself still sitting at my desk. JarekI wanted her. When I had her in that closet, and it was just the two of us, I wanted to take her and make her mine. My pauper should be happy that I used restraint. Next time may not be so lucky for her. Taking her homework was a genius idea because Liliana was all mine for just those few minutes in the closet.I've tried inciting fear into the student body regarding my pauper. She didn't have many friends, if any, beforehand, but students still talked to her, and the guys still drooled when she walked by. Not anymore. It's a dick move, but ask me if I give a fuck.I may not be one of the popular jocks, but being a Falcon puts me at the top and the most popular guy at school. I actually get along with everybody; Liliana Sumner is just special. It's because she's special that I treat her the way I do. I'm driven crazy when she's around, and the fact that I can't have her the way I want has me acting like a madman. It's a new day and I'm just pulling up to my pauper's house when

LilianaI wake up to a beeping noise all around me and realize I'm in a hospital bed. My body feels like it's been used as a punching bag repeatedly, and something tickles my nose. I reach up and feel an oxygen tube is the culprit for the itching, so I leave it in place as I glance around the room. I don't know what I expected, but an empty room isn't it.I press the red button, and a speaker crackles above my head, "May I help you?""Y-Yes," my voice cracks, and I have to clear my throat before continuing, "May I please speak with a nurse?""Yes, someone will be there momentarily, dear."The room goes quiet once more, aside from the machines' beeping. A moment later, a kind-looking nurse comes in carrying a tray. "It's so nice to see you awake, Liliana. Are you in any pain?" she asks as she sets the tray down on my side table."Yeah, a little." I try sitting up, but the pain is too much, and I lay back. "Can you tell me how I ended up here?"The nurse pushes a button on the handrail,

Liliana4 Years LaterI'm sitting outside my makeshift house with two of my neighbors as we play a game of cards. We usually do it when none of us are out trying to earn money. The two of them panhandle all day, whereas I try to stay out of the public's eye.My lack of a birth certificate or proof that I was, in fact, born here makes it hard to get a real job. I get it, I probably could have gone to the courthouse, but the loops I would have needed to go through because Heath had taken my ID just didn't fit into my timeline. I hadn't expected to stay here until I started seeing flyers with my face on them being put up all around town. That's when I knew I needed to burrow deeper into the parts of town that decent people would never venture into.I wouldn't say Heath Richards was decent, but I know he wouldn't have looked in the dilapidated building I hid myself in for that first year of hiding. Thoughts of hitchhiking to the next town had crossed my mind, but then I'd have to be seen

LilianaI wake up and stretch. I've been sleeping in Heath's bed ever since that first night we were intimate. It's been about two weeks, and I still haven't let him take it all the way; I'm just not comfortable with it yet. It's still early, so I'm surprised that I find it empty when I look over to his side of the bed. Heath never rises so early; he's a late sleeper. Throwing back the covers, I hug myself against the slight chill in the air as I pad my way to the door.I'm dressed only in one of Heath's heavy metal rock band t-shirts, and my feet are bare. When I come down the hallway, I can only hear the muffled sound of Heath's voice. Smiling, I wonder who he could be talking to other than himself, but when I hear him say my name, I slow down until I'm just by the living room doorway."Yeah, I've been working with her. Lily's turning into a real porn star. Her cherry will bring in a shit ton of money when we're ready." There's a long pause, and then his next words clarify any confu

JarekIt's been a whole fucking week, and Liliana has somehow disappeared. How one simple girl can fall off the radar as she did is beyond me. Yeah, she pawned off the bracelet, but that asshole only gave her a measly five hundred dollars, where I had paid four grand for it. I'd thank him because without the money that she should have gotten for it but didn't, she won't get too far, yet I want to beat the fucker for swindling my pauper. However, even without the money, Liliana has still been able to evade me. She has to have someone helping her—I'd bet my life on it, but who the hell could that be? My pauper has no friends.Scrolling through my email, I come across one from Carl that I never opened. The subject line says, Inheritance. How the fuck did I miss this? I guess having my mind on my pauper all week, had me forgetting all about my other issue. He sees me as a woman who he wants to teach, but does this mean that he likes me that way, or is he only trying to be nice? "Do you want to teach me?" I ask my own question. His dimples poke out as he grins that boyish grin that I've always loved. "I would love to teach you this and so much more if you'd let me." He caresses my cheek, and I lean into his hand. "Let's forget the movie for now," he says as he takes my hand and pulls me up from the couch. I know exactly what he's thinking and I don't know if I'm ready for that just yet, and I tell him so. "Heath, I don't know about the rest. At least not yet." "It's okay, Lily. There is no rush for all that. Let's go to the bedroom and get comfortable, and I will teach you the basics while we wait for the food to arrive.""O-okay." I let him pull me into his room.I've been sleeping on his couch the
