“He’s gone, Elizabeth,” her captain Charles Johnston tells her. Elizabeth blinks back her tears. Her face full of shock and disbelief. Her frozen stare interrupted by his words. “He left his badge,” Charles states as he lifts an empty envelope from his desk with a gold badge on top of it.
Elizabeth’s breath stops; her eyes trained on the badge. ‘It couldn’t be,’ she thought. ‘There’s no way.’ He wouldn’t leave her like this. No warning, no phone call, no letter, nothing. She was more than that to him. Or so she thought. He was always more to her. That was one reason why she was never able to have real relationships. She knew no one would ever compare to him.
Realization over where she was rushed over her. With her cheeks starting to flush, she takes one look at her captain and heads to the door. “I’m sorry, Liz,” she hears her captain say. She gives him a sad smile before making her way completely out of his office.
She takes a quick glance around the squad room. She lets out a quiet sigh. Everyone in the room were either busy working on cases or talking amongst themselves. She couldn’t bear to let anyone else see her this way, especially her fellow detectives. It was bad enough her captain had to see her practically break; she wouldn’t be able to handle anyone else giving her those same sympathetic eyes.
Elizabeth quickly makes her way into the nearest empty room. The tears spilling right as the door was shut. She let it all out. All the hurt, the disappointment, the emptiness; it consumed her. She barely registers the door behind her opening. With tears blurring her vision, she makes out a figure in the doorway. An overwhelming scent subdues her. She knows that smell. She’s loved that smell for the past 7 years. “Matthew!?” Elizabeth cries out in disbelief.
Elizabeth shoots up in bed, her breathing ragged. Sweat and tears mixing on her face. Awareness hits her. She was in her room. “Stupid dream,” she mutters out loud. He left 3 years ago, yet he still had this hold over her.
No matter how much she tried moving on, this nightmare plagued her. It was a constant reminder of a chapter of her life she didn’t want to remember. The dream always ended the same, with her looking up at him standing in the doorway. She yearned to know why he was there.
Her brain knew it was all a show, but it didn’t stop her from asking all sorts of questions. Why was he back there? Did he forget something? Was he going to explain everything? How did he know where I was? Her own questions overwhelmed her. It was pointless. It wasn’t even real, she reminded herself.
Her thoughts coming to halt when she hears her alarm going off. The glow of her clock filling the room. It was 6am. She needed to be at work by 8. She glances over her shoulder at the man in bed besides her.
His chest slowing rising with each breath. A sigh of relief escapes her lips. “He’s still asleep,” she thought to herself. A slight smile appears on her face. He was genuinely a nice guy. Always bringing her flowers, making dinner for her. “How did I get so lucky?” she thought before seeing him start to stir.
She quickly got out of bed and headed towards the bathroom. She hated waking him, especially with that dream. He was always supportive, but she could tell it was starting to bother him. They had started dating soon after Matthew left.
At first, he was just a distraction to the pain, but as time went on, she opened herself up more to him. They took everything slow, and he was a true gentleman to her. But as time went on, her heart still pulled to Matthew. He was gone, but she couldn’t let go of the hope that he would come back one day.
Every time she had a bad case, she would look towards the squad room doors praying he would walk through them. She wanted to hate him. To pretend he never existed. Part of her thought if she acted like he was never there, the pain would be less real, less engulfing. She wanted to be able to give her whole self to Evan. He deserved that in the least.
He deserved more than her. Someone who had their life together. Someone who wasn’t still in love with her old partner. Elizabeth sighs while looking back at Evan once more before closing the bathroom door. “Today will be a good day,” she tried reminding herself. It needed to be. She undresses and steps into the shower.
The scent of fresh coffee hits Elizabeth as she makes her way into the kitchen. Standing behind the counter stood Evan reading the morning paper. He takes a sip of coffee as he notices her standing in the doorway. “Morning babe,” he says handing her a cup of coffee, a sweet smile on his face. “Morning,” she says with a smile back, taking the cup from him.
She takes a long look at him. He was fully dressed in a grey suit with a black tie. His brown hair was neatly slicked back. His brown eyes glistening from the sun coming through the window. “Like what you see?” he chuckles. A smile making itself known on her face when their eyes meet. Elizabeth laughs. “Maybe just a little,” she says with a smirk.
“You look nice today. I didn’t wake you, did I?” she asks. “Your alarm,” he says while raising his eyebrows. His expression showing a little annoyance. “No worries though,” he says when he sees her demeaner change slightly. “I needed to be up early anyways. I have that big case today, remember,” he added.
Elizabeth makes her way to the table to grab a muffin. “Oh, that’s right. The Jeffry case,” she says while taking a seat. She was relieved he didn’t mention her dream. Today was not the day to have that discussion. She was in for a long day as well.
They were wrapping up on a big case today. A man had murdered his wife, and all they needed was his confession. They had the proof, but the guy’s confession would nail him in court. Elizabeth was good at getting suspects to confess, but this guy was a real piece of work. Classic narcissist with terrible misogyny. He was going to be tough to crack, but she knew her presence alone would rile him up. Hopefully enough for a confession.
“Yeah. Should be pretty open and shut,” Evan responded. “Good,” Elizabeth says giving him a soft smile and nod before he made his way over to her. He places a hand on shoulder, leaning in to give her a kiss on the cheek. “I’m gonna head out. You okay getting to work? I can give you a ride really quick.” “Oh no, it’s okay. I was thinking of stopping to get something for lunch anyways. You go ahead.”
He gives her a smile before heading towards the front door grabbing his coat from the rack. “See you at dinner. Love you.” “You, too. Bye.” she replies as she takes the last bite of her muffin. She stands up and makes her way to the sink to wash her hands. Something felt off. She couldn’t shake this feeling of nervousness. It was just another day. What did she have to be nervous for? She shakes her head and makes her way to the front door. She grabs her keys and slips on her coat.
The morning flew by. It was tough, but Elizabeth got her confession. Only took her an hour. A new personal record she smirked to herself. She was making her way back to her desk when she realized her badge was missing. She knows she had it on before entering the interrogation room.
She made sure it was in full view of Mr. Daniels. Seeing a woman in a position of power was sure to get him angry; angry enough to confess, she hoped. Sighing, she made her way back. Once inside, she sees it under the table. ‘The clip must have broken,’ she thought. ‘How did I not hear that?’
As she reaches for her badge, the door to the interrogation room opens. Her eyes open wide. That smell. Her body is taken over by shock. ‘It couldn’t be.’ She slowly turns her head towards the door looking directly at the man in the doorway. His big blue eyes were staring straight at her. “Matthew!?”
Elizabeth’s POV“Matthew!?” A million thoughts were flying through my head. What was he even doing here? Did he know I was in here? Was he looking for me? My dream! He opened the door just like my dream. Am I still dreaming? Am I…?My thoughts were interrupted by his sudden words. “Elizabeth. Elizabeth. Lizzy!” he tries calling out. I shake my head trying to get a grip on reality. I look up at him with pure sadness. “You, okay?” I’m taken aback by his question. Anger I thought, had left years ago came flooding back. Of course, I’m not okay. He leaves without so much as a goodbye, and he assumes nothings changed.“No. I’m not okay,” I scoffed. I try to brush pass him when he grabs my arm forcing me to look at him. “Let go of my arm, Anderson,” I say harshly. The tone of my voice and use of his last name must have startled him, making him let go of my arm. I
Elizabeth’s POVLeaving the station, I practically ran to my car. I had thought about this day for years. What I would say. What I would do when I saw him. I can’t believe I froze. I must have looked like a fool. Embarrassment fills me. I really shouldn’t have left work, but there was no way I could be there when he came out of that office. I’d just give him another chance to embarrass me further, this time more public than the last.I take one last look at the station house before driving off. After pulling into a parking space, I make my way up to my apartment. Opening the door, I quickly walk in, closing and deadbolting it behind me. I drop my keys on the table and plop on the couch with a sigh. “And today was supposed to be a good day,” I thought to myself. The day went by surprising fast. I managed to waste a few hours catching up on a few shows. I glanced over at the clock on the table. It was 8:30. Evan
The next morning, I quickly and quietly jumped out of bed. It was another sleepless night. This time thanks to Evan. He was really starting to worry me. I know Matthew coming back into the picture wasn’t ideal for him, but his behavior didn’t sit well with me. Doesn’t he realize how hard this is for me, too. Sighing, I look around my closet to find my outfit for the day. I settle on a nice blue blouse with a black pair of dress pants. Leaving the closet, I stop when something catches my eyes. A beautiful red dress was tucked towards the back of the closet. The dress was skintight and strapless barely reaching my knees. “This will be perfect for tonight,” I smile to myself grabbing the dress and some shoes to match it. There’s no telling how tonight will go so I might as well as look good. Setting the dress and shoes on a chair, I head into the kitchen. Infront of the stove stood Evan stirring eggs around a pan. “Morning,” I say taking a seat at the table. “Mo
“Why did you leave?” Matthew drops his gaze from mine, his hand resting over his mouth and chin. Sighing, he drops his hand and looks back at me. “The week before I left. You uh remember the Hannigan case? And how I got shot.” I nod.“I came home from the hospital to find Anne’s bags packed. The shooting scared her, and uh, she said if I wanted to be involved in our child’s life, I would have to be more responsible with my life.” My eyes widen when he says child. “She was pregnant?” I ask in disbelief.“I couldn’t leave her, Elizabeth. I’ve always wanted to be a dad. She told me to leave the force or to at least transfer to an office setting.” His hand running through his hair. I could see the sorrow in his eyes. “I knew if I had called you, I wouldn’t have been able to leave.”Overwhelming guilt consumes me. “Matthew, I…” sensing my emotions,
Arousal fills the air, seeming to pause the world. The birds chirping, the clicking on the clock, passing cars all silent. His eyes were still locked onto mine silently asking permission to continue. I reach up capturing his lips with mine.He presses his lips back more firmly, slowly moving inside me. “Elizabeth,” he moans. The way he says my name, full of need and desire. He needed me. I could see it in his eyes, feel it in his touch. I can’t remember a time that he truly needed me.I wrap my legs around his waist, wanting him as close to me as possible. He quickens his pace causing me to moan. His hand entangling my hair. He pulls my head back, attacking my neck. I could feel myself getting close. Years of tension and pining climax of the shocking reality that this was truly happening.I can feel my pleasure building in my core. My nails digging into his ass as it intensifies. He quickly grabs one of my legs throwing it over his shoulder. I
Elizabeth’s POVSlamming the door, I walk a few steps before sinking to the floor. What the hell did I just do? I wanted to cry, to scream, to run away. The moment I’ve dreamed about for the past 10 years just transpired yet it couldn’t have happened at a worser time.As much as I wanted this to happen, I didn’t think it would be like this. Not when there were other people in play. Other people who would be hurt. People that I hurt. I immediately think of Evan. He was being an ass at the moment, but that didn’t warrant this, this betrayal.I love Evan, I truly do. He was there for me when Matthew wasn’t. He cared for me when Matthew didn’t. He loved me when Matthew didn’t. ‘But he isn’t Matthew,’ my heart told me. The tears that had threaten to fall, now running fast down my face.‘He said he won’t leave again,’ my heart argues. ‘What if he lied? He
“Elizabeth, I…” My heart was pounding. Sweat was beginning to form on my face. “I’ve always loved you. From the first moment I met you.” I let out a breath I didn’t know I was holding. I open my eyes searching his face for doubt, relieved to not see an ounce of it. “I’ve wanted to tell you that for years, but every time I tried…” he shakes his head in despair. He looked defeated, broken. I could feel his regret. “There’s nothing to stop me now. I love you, Elizabeth. I love everything about you. I love when you laugh, when you smile, when you’re kicking the crap out of a perp.” The last words making me chuckle. “I love you.” Tears were begging to fall. My giant smile displaying all my emotions. From my face, he could tell I felt the same. I throw my arms around his neck and pull him into me. My lips forcefully take his, melting together perfectly. My body shivers when he passionately kisses me back. I pull back after a minute, wanting to stare into hi
Elizabeth’s POV The day went by seemly fast. Every chance we could, Matthew and I would sneak off to be alone for a few seconds. I could never get enough of his lips. Just the thought of him filled me with arousal. But every moment I spend with Matthew, I’m saturated with disgust in myself. I was still technically with Evan, and the thought of being an adulterous whore doesn’t sit very well with me. I had planned to talk to him this morning, but he seemingly disappeared. It wasn’t like him to just up and disappear. To not even send me a text or anything. Every morning, he would send me a message hoping I have a great day, but not today. Something was definitely up. The thought of him knowing about Matthew and I rang through my head the entire day. It would explain the behavior, but I didn’t want him to know until I could explain everything. If he knows already, there’s no telling what’s running through his mind right now. Rubb
