EPILOGUE

Sierra closed her eyes, enjoying the feel of the wind in her hair while her sun hat both protected her from the colossal heat of the Californian sun and threatened to fly off. Roman and Sierra were enjoying the view of the coast as they drove along the shoreline on their way to his family’s beach house in Malibu. Elijah’s convertible proved to be the best choice of vehicle for the summertime weather, with the music blasting through the speakers and Sierra and Roman singing along at the top of their voices.

“Ahh… This is the life.” Roman sighed when the song trickled to an end.

“I think we could use one of these.” She ran her hand over the dashboard lovingly, “But like a Bentley convertible.” Roman eyed her with amus

AN OFFER OF A LIFETIMESierra walked through the corridors of the research center with a knot in her stomach. It was just after midday on a Friday in the midst of summer; she was preparing to go home early after a successful week when a member of her junior staff informed her that the Chief of Staff requested her presence in his office. You’d think she was nervous about what he had to say, but instead, the nerves that knotted in her stomach weren’t at all work-related. Many over the years called her a workaholic which was why leaving early was a big deal for her, but the dinner with her boyfriend that evening was a big deal.Brent and Sierra were introduced by a mutual friend shortly after she finished college and they’d been going strong for five years.&nbs

HEARTBREAK AND BETRAYALThe yellow maxi dress complimented her olive skin tone perfectly and the little extra height that came with the white heels she wore made her appear thinner than she was. The clock beside her bed read five-thirty, giving her enough to scrutinize her appearance in the mirror before she had to leave for the restaurant. She fingered the perfect ringlets of her black hair, wishing it were shorter, but Brent loved her long hair, so she never cut it much. Her left hand froze in her hair, in the mirror all she could see was the french ombre she had done the day before, but when she closed her eyes she could picture a simple princess cut ring around her finger. The thought made a pleasurable shiver run down her spine, God knows she’d been waiting for thi

PAIN She always considered him to be the more romantic one between them, she always felt lucky to have a man who would go out of his way to make her happy and feel loved. She sifted through her brain, hoping to find some indication of the direction his thoughts were headed in but found none. Apart from the strange behavior in the past few weeks, he never gave her reason to believe he was doubting their relationship and that reality hurt more than anything. Seated in her car with silent tears flowing down her face, she watched the door of the restaurant, waiting with hope that he would emerge and rush over to her to tell her what a big mistake he’d made, but no one ever appeared. She felt numb as she made the twenty-minute drive home, concentrating only on following the

MAKING A DECISION News of their breakup spread amongst their mutual friends quicker than Sierra would have liked, when the first call came all she wanted to do was crawl in a hole and hide away, everyone had heard what happened, though it was Brent’s skewed version of how they came to a mutual agreement, she figured it best to let them believe she hadn’t been dumped, it soothed her heart a little. Sierra wasn’t by any means a loner, she made friends quite easily and had a few close friends, those being the only ones she felt comfortable telling the truth to so when Macy finally heard the news and decided to round up the girls for a weekend of cliche ice cream and movies, Sierra gave in, she needed to get out of her head and having the four crazy women over would do just that.

A FAMILY OF FRIENDS “That escalated quickly.” Macy cringed, looking at Lou’s shocked eyes. “What just happened?” Lou asked, staring in the direction Elena disappeared. “She’s got a point, Lou. If something happens between you, you might not say it out loud but somehow she’s going to be forced to pick sides and that’s not fair to her. He’s her brother and you’re her best friend, she shouldn’t have to bear the consequences of your actions.” Susie pointed out, munching on a carrot stick. “I would never ask her to choose, I would never expect her to pick me over her brother.” Lou frowned, her shoulders sagging. “Maybe you wouldn’t, but what

BOSS LADYThe evening with her friends turned out to be just what Sierra needed, with Lou and Elena’s little drama becoming the main topic of discussion, she was glad she wasn’t the topic of discussion, because while Brent had broken her heart, she wasn’t sure if she’d be able to sit through a typical “bash-the-ex” session which they usually had when one of them went through a breakup in college. In her eyes Brent wasn’t a bad person, she still loved him as much as she had before he broke her heart and because of that, she was still learning to think of him as the villain in the story. Her friends had all left early, needing to get back to their lives, which left Sierra with only one thing to do to put off calling her parents and that

ADDING SALT TO THE WOUNDEvery evening when Sierra returned home from work her apartment smelled of a new dish her mom conjured up, the past three weeks she spent with her mother around and her father visiting on weekends made her feel a lot less lonely, in many ways it helped keep her mind off Brent who she had yet to hear from. She wasn’t sure why she held her breath, perhaps she was hoping he would come to his senses and realize that he was wrong, but that hadn’t happened and she felt herself becoming more depressed every night that she went to bed without a call from him.She knew she could swallow her pride and call him, but she didn’t want to force herself on him, the last thing she could handle was hearing that she wasn’t good enough for him aga

Macy’s son was just learning to talk and kids are notorious for picking up swear words the fastest.“I’m sorry, I’m just so furious, I could kill him!” Aunt Mitsy fumed, throwing her tiny fists down on the picnic table.“Aunt Mits, it’s really okay. THE TRUTH A soft thud woke Sierra up from her sleep, she felt a lot stronger than earlier so she decided to check if Roman was okay, pushing open her door, she stopped short when she saw his muscled back facing the door from his position at the window, he had his phone against his ear and a hand in his hair, she wondered if it was a work emergency since he seemed frustrated, but before she could take another step, his harsh voice stopped her. “No. Stop this shit, I’m warning you, Caralynn, if you ever call me again I will make sure you live to regret it. I made myself clear last night, I love Sierra and you have made things difficult enough for me, I won’t tolerate anymore. I’m not the same naive person I used to be. Let’s just say I didn’t handle the situation well.” He cringed at his own words and his mother sighed. “I knew that girl was bad news the day I met her,” Karisa grumbled. “Mom!” Roman groaned.

IN SICKNESS AND HEALTH The phone buzzed beneath her, making her groan out loud. She called in sick to work early that morning, so it wouldn’t be them looking for her. She didn’t bother peeling her eyes open when she answered the call. “Hello?” She grumbled, suddenly feeling bile rise in her throat. “Sierra, are you okay?” Roman’s concerned voice was clear through the phone, but before she could answer or cut the call, her mouth felt wet. Abandoning the call, she raced to the guest bathroom and threw herself in front of the toilet before the contents of her stomach spewed back out. She felt her head pound and her stomach burned

Sierra turned to see a drop-dead gorgeous woman standing behind her staring at Roman with a loving look in her eyes and Sierra’s body turned cold. “Roman!” The woman smiled broadly and approached Roman just as Sierra realized he stood up. Long slender arms wrapped themselves around Roman’s neck at the same time his arms tightened around her waist and hi

She looked worse for wear after the experience, but Roman was beaming from ear to ear.“You’re the best Aunty Rashida.” He dropped a kiss on her cheek and handed a dollar bill to her husband with a salute in his direction before he took off towards Sierra.
