A FAMILY OF FRIENDS
“That escalated quickly.” Macy cringed, looking at Lou’s shocked eyes.
“What just happened?” Lou asked, staring in the direction Elena disappeared.
“She’s got a point, Lou. If something happens between you, you might not say it out loud but somehow she’s going to be forced to pick sides and that’s not fair to her. He’s her brother and you’re her best friend, she shouldn’t have to bear the consequences of your actions.” Susie pointed out, munching on a carrot stick.
“I would never ask her to choose, I would never expect her to pick me over her brother.” Lou frowned, her shoulders sagging.
“Maybe you wouldn’t, but what about him?” Lou’s frown deepened, she couldn’t decide that for him even though she didn’t see him as the type. “I’ve been there Lou, you always say you won’t make her choose, but when the time comes, it's her relationships that are never going to be the same.” Susie smiled sadly.
“What do you mean, you’ve been there?” Macy asked, sitting down next to Lou Susie.
“Back in high school I had a best friend, Jenna and Peter dated throughout high school, but when Peter went off to college she started getting insecure. One day they had a fight so she went to a party, got drunk, and kissed another guy, I found out about it and told her that she had to come clean to him or I would, but before either of us could tell him, he found out from a friend of his that was still in town. They broke up, went their separate ways and that was also the end of my friendship with Jenna. It took years for Peter to forgive me, no matter how many times I told him that I was going to tell him, in his mind I betrayed him and he only got over it when he met his wife.” Susie’s expression spoke volumes about how much the situation affected her which left the ladies pensive.
“What… What if we didn’t break up?” Lou asked in a lower tone of voice, hesitantly glancing at the entryway.
“What do you mean?” Sierra enquired, joining the conversation for the first time.
“Evan asked me to marry him…” Lou’s words shocked her friends to silence.
“He what!” Macy whisper yelled, her eyes wide open in apprehension.
“He asked me two weeks ago. It wasn’t like a planned thing, it was impromptu after a wild night, but he asked and I haven’t answered him yet.” Sierra stared at her friend with interest, her usual confidence was nowhere to be seen, instead, she had vulnerability written across her features.
“Why haven’t you answered him?” Lou seemed to be expecting the question and leaned back with a huff.
“We’ve been seeing each other for a little over a year now and at first it was just kind of on and off fun when we felt bored, but somehow it unspokenly became exclusive and I haven’t had the guts to tell Elena. I may pretend like I don’t care, but honestly, I’m terrified of losing her, and at the same time, I can’t help but feel like if I put a title on this relationship, it will start the clock ticking.” Sierra understood what she meant by that.
“Lou, Evan’s notorious for a lot of things, and commitment isn’t one of them, but once he sets his mind on something, he goes after it and he never lets go. More importantly, he’s not Paul.” Sierra pointed out and a look of uncertainty settled on her face.
“How do you know he won’t change his mind?” Macy walked over to her and kneeled at her feet.
“Honey, if this man loves you as much as I suspect he does and you love him as much as is written on your face, then you owe it to yourselves to give your relationship a fighting chance and the first step to knowing whether he’s capable of changing his mind is coming clean to Elena.” Macy’s words were frank and probably not what Lou wanted to hear, but she’d been through enough in her previous relationship to suffer any more uncertainty at the hands of a man and all of her friends agreed.
“Do you love him?” Elena’s voice broke the silence, no one had noticed her standing in the entryway with a look of concern on her face.
“Elena, I can explain.” Lou’s eyes widened as she fumbled for words.
“You don’t have to, just tell me if you love him.” The emotion in Elena’s voice was hard to detect, but the look in her eye pushed Lou to answer.
“Yeah, I do love him. I don’t know how or when, but I really do.” Elena bit her lip and her hands fisted at her sides.
“So why haven’t you said yes yet?” Lou’s eyes knitted together.
“What do you mean?” Elena finally left her position at the entryway and approached her best friend.
“I mean the day after Evan asked you to marry him, he told me everything. At first, I was so angry at him, I thought it was all just a practical joke to get to me, but when I saw the look on his face…” Elena closed her eyes as if recalling the memory, “Lou I’ve never seen that look in my brother’s eyes before and it terrified me even more because I watched your relationship with Peter fall apart, I saw how it broke you and when he told me that you never gave him an answer, I figured that one way or another it would end badly.” Lou’s shoulders sagged before she stood up, stepping around Macy to stand in front of Elena.
“Elena I know I haven’t exactly been modest in terms of my relationship with your brother and while at first it was just to push your buttons, the last thing I ever wanted is for you to get caught between us, I guess that’s why I’ve always kept you at arm’s length from our relationship.” Elena shook her head.
“I don’t care about the teasing, I care about both of you and I want you to be happy even if it’s a little weird for me, I just couldn’t handle if you guys both got hurt.” Sierra smiled slightly, the scene was like one from a movie where the protagonist and antagonist put their differences behind them and realize they’ve been on the same side the whole time.
“I want to be with Evan more than anything, I’m just not sure I’m ready for another marriage and now that I know it’s what he wants, I feel even more insecure about it.” Lou bit her lip, the frown deepening.
“Tell him that, I can assure you it won’t make him run for the hills,” Elena smirked, lightening the tension that had gathered in the air.
BOSS LADYThe evening with her friends turned out to be just what Sierra needed, with Lou and Elena’s little drama becoming the main topic of discussion, she was glad she wasn’t the topic of discussion, because while Brent had broken her heart, she wasn’t sure if she’d be able to sit through a typical “bash-the-ex” session which they usually had when one of them went through a breakup in college. In her eyes Brent wasn’t a bad person, she still loved him as much as she had before he broke her heart and because of that, she was still learning to think of him as the villain in the story. Her friends had all left early, needing to get back to their lives, which left Sierra with only one thing to do to put off calling her parents and that
ADDING SALT TO THE WOUNDEvery evening when Sierra returned home from work her apartment smelled of a new dish her mom conjured up, the past three weeks she spent with her mother around and her father visiting on weekends made her feel a lot less lonely, in many ways it helped keep her mind off Brent who she had yet to hear from. She wasn’t sure why she held her breath, perhaps she was hoping he would come to his senses and realize that he was wrong, but that hadn’t happened and she felt herself becoming more depressed every night that she went to bed without a call from him.She knew she could swallow her pride and call him, but she didn’t want to force herself on him, the last thing she could handle was hearing that she wasn’t good enough for him aga
AUNT ECCENTRIC“That son of a-” My mom threw her hand over Aunt Mitsy’s mouth just in time to muffle the curse word that was escaping.“Mitsy, there are kids here!” Little Ethan watched them with deep interest from his father’s lap, soaking in all the information he could. Macy’s son was just learning to talk and kids are notorious for picking up swear words the fastest.“I’m sorry, I’m just so furious, I could kill him!” Aunt Mitsy fumed, throwing her tiny fists down on the picnic table.“Aunt Mits, it’s really okay. I- nothing can change what happened, to be honest, even if I could turn back the clock, I don’t think I want to.
GREENER PASTURESThe night before her departure, Sierra could hardly sleep, she wasn’t sure whether it was out of excitement or nervousness, but her heart was pounding in her chest and hadn’t stopped since. She was currently standing in the airport, having already checked in online, she didn’t need to wait in the queue since all her luggage had been shipped a week before. Her carry-on laid at her feet with her handbag perched on top she started at the departure gate seeing people hugging their loved ones goodbye, wishing them a safe trip, her parents had minutes ago ventured to buy her snacks for the plane even though she protested that she could purchase anything she wanted on the plane itself, she suspected they disappeared so she wouldn’t see them get emotional.
THE DEALSingapore was quickly growing on Sierra, she enjoyed the contemporary modern culture that the city had to offer, in her brief tour with Ken she’d seen much of what it had to offer and made a mental list of things to do while she was in the city.In the three days she’d been there, she never felt out of place, people were welcoming beyond measure and spoke quite good English. She had yet to cook in the beautiful kitchen she was provided, but in the meanwhile was enjoying the different cuisines, thus far, she enjoyed the Malaysian food the most.Paging through the folder in hand, Sierra’s eyes fell on the directions to the ice-cream parlor that Ken swore was the best ice cream in the world. In a split second she decided she wanted to try it out that n
THE ADVENTURE BEGINS“You’re late.” Sierra glanced at her watch just as a huge yawn escaped her, causing her eyes to go blurry.“By two minutes, I’d say that’s a miracle, given the fact that I’m still asleep.” Sierra pointed out, making Roman smile, even straight out of bed she was at the top of her game.“Your wittiness never ceases to amuse me. Now, would you prefer a scenic run or would you like to just hit the gym?” Sierra glanced outside, seeing that the sun hadn’t risen yet.“What would you suggest?” Roman contemplated for a moment before pointing to t
BREAKING COMFORT ZONESKen sat in a booth at the back of the restaurant while Sierra and Roman were at a table in the middle of the restaurant. There was soft music playing through the speakers as diners ordered their food and drinks, Roman mentioned earlier that the actual Karaoke only started at nine after most patrons had enough liquid courage to face the night, but Sierra wasn’t one for heavy drinking, she’d experienced the hype of having liquid courage in college and didn’t care much for it.“So, what song are you singing?” Roman smirked, his eyes daring her to say she wasn’t going to sing.“I’m going to sing…” She rubbed her non-existent beard thinking of the
DOCTOR, DOCTORThe Tuesday after their late-night was a tough one for Sierra, she was exhausted from their late-night endeavors, yet Roman still insisted that an early morning workout was mandatory. His justification that she created a routine of working out was more important in the early days than ever and to add salt to the wound he pointed out that she wasn’t nearly old enough to be tired after a late night.“How old are you?” Sierra asked as she dabbed sweat off her forehead, she was done for the morning, but Roman still had a set to complete. He glanced at her taking a seat on a bench across from him as he did his la
EPILOGUE Sierra closed her eyes, enjoying the feel of the wind in her hair while her sun hat both protected her from the colossal heat of the Californian sun and threatened to fly off. Roman and Sierra were enjoying the view of the coast as they drove along the shoreline on their way to his family’s beach house in Malibu. Elijah’s convertible proved to be the best choice of vehicle for the summertime weather, with the music blasting through the speakers and Sierra and Roman singing along at the top of their voices. “Ahh… This is the life.” Roman sighed when the song trickled to an end. “I think we could use one of these.” She ran her hand over the dashboard lovingly, “But like a Bentley convertible.” Roman eyed her with amus
THE TRUTH A soft thud woke Sierra up from her sleep, she felt a lot stronger than earlier so she decided to check if Roman was okay, pushing open her door, she stopped short when she saw his muscled back facing the door from his position at the window, he had his phone against his ear and a hand in his hair, she wondered if it was a work emergency since he seemed frustrated, but before she could take another step, his harsh voice stopped her. “No. Stop this shit, I’m warning you, Caralynn, if you ever call me again I will make sure you live to regret it. I made myself clear last night, I love Sierra and you have made things difficult enough for me, I won’t tolerate anymore. I’m not the same naive person I used to be. This conversation is over!” He whisper yelled, his voice hard with finality.
FIXING THINGS “Mom she won’t talk to me, I don’t know what to do.” Roman sighed, pacing the length of Sierra’s kitchen. “What did you do?” His mother asked, he could picture her with her hands on her hips, staring at him knowingly. “We bumped into Cara yesterday. Let’s just say I didn’t handle the situation well.” He cringed at his own words and his mother sighed. “I knew that girl was bad news the day I met her,” Karisa grumbled. “Mom!” Roman groaned.
IN SICKNESS AND HEALTH The phone buzzed beneath her, making her groan out loud. She called in sick to work early that morning, so it wouldn’t be them looking for her. She didn’t bother peeling her eyes open when she answered the call. “Hello?” She grumbled, suddenly feeling bile rise in her throat. “Sierra, are you okay?” Roman’s concerned voice was clear through the phone, but before she could answer or cut the call, her mouth felt wet. Abandoning the call, she raced to the guest bathroom and threw herself in front of the toilet before the contents of her stomach spewed back out. She felt her head pound and her stomach burned
HURT AND JEALOUSY Sierra and Roman were seated at their favorite spot at Ghirardelli Chocolate Company drinking milkshakes when Roman suddenly froze. “Cara?” Roman breathed, wide-eyed. Sierra turned to see a drop-dead gorgeous woman standing behind her staring at Roman with a loving look in her eyes and Sierra’s body turned cold. “Roman!” The woman smiled broadly and approached Roman just as Sierra realized he stood up. Long slender arms wrapped themselves around Roman’s neck at the same time his arms tightened around her waist and hi
THE SURPRISE PARTYSierra and Alexa removed the cake from the box, careful not to touch it and damage the cream.“This looks so delicious,” Alexa commented, Sierra ordered it from a well-known bakery in downtown San Francisco and she too was quite pleased with the outcome.“She’s going to love it.” The blush pink and peach roses were soft in contrast to the shards of white chocolate that stuck out between them, the vanilla sponge was filled with raspberries and white chocolate ganache and covered in a pink ombre ganache. It was exactly as Alexa described, feminine with an edge.
A MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE“Okay, I’m here. Are you ready?” Roman grabbed his bag in his hand and opened it, ready to reveal what he picked in the gift shop.“Yup, we’ll each reveal one item at a time.” Sierra reached into the bag to pull out the first item.Their eyes landed on the items in their hands and both of them smirked, Roman held up a 7-inch vinyl record with Ain’t No Sunshine by Bill Withers written on the cover and Sierra held up a polaroid camera.“You know what this means, don’t you?&rdq
THE ICE CREAM EXPERIENCESierra keeled over with laughter. A little Indian woman was teaching Roman how to make candy floss, but she scolded him endlessly because he kept eating it. They saw the little cart when they got off the cable car and Roman dragged her over with fascination.“Okay, no more, no more, we finished now.” She lifted the stick and handed it to him, switching off the machine in the process. She looked worse for wear after the experience, but Roman was beaming from ear to ear.“You’re the best Aunty Rashida.” He dropped a kiss on her cheek and handed a dollar bill to her husband with a salute in his direction before he took off towards Sierra. Grabbing her hand he yanked her to
I LOVE YOUThe weeks passed by in a blur and before they knew it, Roman started his job as head of the ED at Union Medical Centre. The brand new building hosts a variety of specialised clinics such as an Oncology clinic, a Diabetes wing, a pre, and post-hospital care facility, and state-of-the-art maternity care. It has become the best round-the-clock medical facility in San Francisco.“How was your first week at work?” Roman was still dressed in navy blue scrubs and trainers.“It’s been great, getting to know the team and learning to work with everyone. No major cases yet, but the challenge is great.” Roman grinned, popping a fry into his mouth. They were seated on a bench of a popular fi
