Elise returned to the two men who were deep in discussion. "I apologize for that. I was seeking help from a trusted aid."
"No problem, Officer. We were discussing what to do next." Daniel replied with a smile.
"This is going to be a long night," Kai mumbled, running a hand through his messy hair.
"It sure will be, considering the number of people who died here." Daniel agreed and closed the file in his hands.
"Sir," One of the policemen jogged towards them and interrupted their conversation. "I'm sorry for interrupting. But Officer Derek is looking for you. You are to handle the reporters."
"Shit!" Daniel cursed under his breath and gnashed his teeth in annoyance. "Aren't we in a mess already? Why do we have to handle the reporters when we are yet to crack the case?" He grumbled, and Elise pitied the man for his state.
It was one thing to handle the reporters when they had evidence with them and more or less knew who the culprit was. But it was a different thing altogether to face the reporters when they had no clue about the perpetrator and the dead people were more than three hundred. Their stupid questions and their ability to twist the truth to any extent to keep the public hooked to their channels were quite commendable and infuriating at the same time.
"If you'll excuse me, please. I need to deal with the reporters." Daniel gave them a weary smile and walked away with the other policeman.
"We should go with them," Elise commented, giving Kai a knowing look.
"Elise, how much will we be involved in this matter?" Kai questioned carefully and observed her expression.
"We will assist them for now while they lead the investigation. But my instincts say that the roles will be reversed soon." Elise answered and tapped her fingers on her elbow thoughtfully.
Kai's shoulders sagged in defeat while Elise patted him sympathetically. "Let's go."
Elise and Kai searched for Daniel and Derek, who were preparing to face the reporters.
"Officers, is something the matter?" Derek noticed the two first and tilted his head in confusion.
"We will accompany you when you meet the reporters," Elise stated calmly, and Derek raised his brow immediately. He observed her expression for a moment silently before he nodded at her lightly, understanding dawning upon him slowly. "Sure, Officers. But please be careful. The reporters can be unruly if they want to. They sometimes become inhuman."
"We understand, Officers. Also, we will not interrupt until it is absolutely necessary. You have all the reins." Elise looked at them calmly, too calm for their liking. It was as if she knew something they didn't, which perturbed the two men.
"Follow us." Derek frowned but masked his expressions, and the four people approached the reporters, who were going crazy, trying their best to push past the police barricades.
Some of them were utterly uncontrollable and rowdy, and the police officers had to hold them down to stop them from moving closer to the zone of destruction.
Elise was annoyed with the disruptive crowd. But she remained calm and stood behind Daniel and Derek while the reporters rushed to them to throw their questions at them.
"Police officers, will you tell us who the person behind the blast is?" One of the reporters asked, jumping to the main question directly instead of beating around the bush. The other reporters thrust their mikes forward, hoping to get a clear recording of their answers.
"We are yet to finish investigating the situation. Until we are absolutely certain, we will refrain from answering such questions. I'm sorry." Derek tried to brush off the question by giving a vague reply. But the reporters were having none of it.
"Do you believe someone among Mr. Craig's enemies to have taken action against him?" One of the daring reporters questioned immediately, and Elise narrowed her eyes as she scrutinized the man. She noted his name while waiting for the two policemen to handle the situation.
"Again, as I said, please refrain from pointing fingers without evidence. We will not be replying to any questions for which we do not have no substantial proof." Derek answered while Daniel threw a cold look at the reporter who had asked them the question.
"In that case, should we say that the police have been incapable of finding evidence till now when the crime the perpetrator has committed is inarguably brutal and barbarous?" The reporter continued and smirked faintly, irking Elise all the more. Even Kai, who usually remained composed, was displeased with his attempts to rile them up while they were trying to remain civilized with them.
"Sir, now you are taking it too far." Derek did not hide his fury, and his voice turned low in warning. "We are doing our duty, and once we find the culprit, we will not hesitate to put them behind bars."
However, instead of acknowledging and appreciating Derek's reply, the reporter laughed wryly, deriding all the people trying their best to investigate the case.
"That's it. You've taken it too far now." Elise was done entertaining the audacious reporter. While Derek and Daniel were bound by the rules and they didn't dare say anything that could possibly put them in a fix, Elise was never the one the care about matters like these. She stepped forward, forcing Derek and Daniel to allow her to face the reporters.
Elise ran her eyes around, making sure to meet every reporter in the eye before fixing her gaze on the rude one. Her aura was so strong that it forced everyone to step back in alarm. Even the man who had forced the two police officers to a corner was compelled to avert his gaze and lose his smirk.
"Didn't you say that we are incapable? In that case, we'll hand over the work to you, and you'll have less than two hours to find the perpetrator. Two hours later, I'll stand in your place and ask you the questions you've asked us." Elise spat, and the man widened his eyes in disbelief. "Are you up for the challenge? Do you want to try reversing our roles?"
"How can you do this? Isn't it your duty to find the truth and catch the culprit?" The man argued, and the other reporters moved away from him when they realized how unreasonable he was being.
"Since you feel we are not doing our duty, you do our duty and try to find the truth. I promise you that no one here will object or complain. Who knows, you might be more capable and find the truth before us?" Elise's expression did not give away anything, baffling everyone but Kai. He was the only one smiling while stifling his laugh. It would be utterly impudent of him to laugh in such a critical and complicated situation. Also, Elise would kill him for it.
Elise ignored everyone's gazes on her and kept staring at the reporter who dared to mess with her. "What do you say? Are you up for the challenge, Sir?"
The reporter had no words to say and he lowered his head, utterly embarrassed by how things had turned out to be. Not only had he been humiliated by the police and the NCI, but he had also made a fool of himself in front of his peers. Unable to face the ignominy anymore, he departed from the place immediately.Daniel and Derek smiled at Elise gratefully while the lady faced the other reporters who had gone silent after her valiant attack."If any of you here is going to ask such stupid questions, I suggest you leave right away. Otherwise, you'll only disgrace yourself. I don't mind thrashing stupid people black and blue if that is what they're looking for." She warned and when she noticed that the threat had been registered by them, she stepped back again, allowing the two police officers to take over."Good job." Kia whispered the moment she was back to her place and Elise gave him a curt nod. Since the nuisance was gone, Daniel and Derek could handle the other reporters and Elise d
"We'd like to meet the owners of the club." Daniel and Derek flashed their IDs at the entrance of Black Opal as they waited for the bouncers to allow them inside.Elise and Kai stood behind them as they scrutinized the place. This time, they were more alert and careful as they waited behind the police officers. Although they were just assisting them in the investigation, it was still their duty to accompany them even if they'd be recognized by the people who worked in the club."May I know the reason?" One of the bouncers questioned and glanced behind him, signaling his companion to alert their Bosses."We're investigating a case and we have a few questions we wish to ask them," Derek replied as he looked inside the club from where he was. As expected of a club on a Friday night. The music was blasting off and the smell of smoke and booze filled the air. The crowd was unbearable and Elise felt sick just by looking at them."Follow me." The guard stated monotonously and Elise quirked
“Please take your seats.” Reuel pointed towards the two couches and everyone noticed that his eyes lingered more on Elise than anyone else. While the three men sat down, Elise stood still and watched the twins who were sitting like emperors on their throne-like chairs. She squinted her eyes when her eyes fell on Azael’s white sneakers. Unlike his twin who was dressed prim and proper in a suit, minus the jacket now, Azael instead was dressed casually. “Please take your seat as well, Elise.” Reuel gestured towards one of the chairs that was closer to them, forcing her to snap out of her thoughts. “No, thank you. I’m fine.” Elise smiled nonchalantly and moved her gaze away from the twins. Taking the sudden silence as their cue, the two police officers started their interrogation. “Mr. Azael, Mr. Reuel, Craig Tyrell was last seen in your club. Are we right?” Derek started. “It might be. After all, the club is open to the public.” Azael shrugged as though it was not uncommon for Crai
Other than Azael and Reuel, the three men jumped to their feet instantly. They were utterly spooked to find blood and immediately, their gaze turned to the twins.Oddly, the brothers were calm as they sat in their chairs. Their face was unfathomable and Elise couldn’t make out what was running in their minds. However, it didn’t matter to her. They may deny as much as they want. But eventually, their crimes would come to light one day. After all, karma was a bitch.“May I know whose blood this is?” Elise wasn’t as perturbed as her teammates. Instead, she continued to watch the twins as if she was not dealing with the two most dangerous men in the world but someone who she’d soon put behind bars.“That, Officer, is my blood.” Azael broke the tension in the air and Elise finally lost her composure.“Your blood?”“Yes. You see I was careless and injured my foot before you guys came.”“You got injured today?” Elise tone clearly depicted that she didn’t believe a word he said.“Yes.” Azael
"We understand. You may leave now." Reuel remained unfazed by Caleb's words and gestured with his wrist to leave.Although Caleb was surprised by the two men's reactions, he didn't dwell more upon it. They would handle the matter themselves. He did his duty of informing them. Bowing slightly, he left the office and the door closed after him.Reuel darted a glance at Azael who was already staring at him and his brother got the message immediately. "What do you think, Elise? Do you suspect the Sephyr twins?" Kai glanced at his friend who was staring outside the window as they drove back home. The silence was oddly unsettling, especially after the dreadful incident and the nightmarish meeting with the twins."I do. I definitely do. The Sephyr twins must be behind Craig's death.""Death?" Kai stepped on the brakes, forcing the car to come to a sudden stop and Elise jolted due to the sudden impact."Do you have a death wish, Kai? Spare me. I don't want to die yet." She glared at him as she looked behind to see if they had hindered anyone else on the road. Fortunately for them, the road was deserted and they were alone. Otherwise, horns would have brought out their functionality in the dead of the night, scaring all the sleeping creatures away."My bad, I apologize." Kai started driving again and this time, he was careful and alert. "Do you think Craig is dead?""I don't think, I'm damn sure about it," Elise stated with conviction.
Elise's eyes narrowed as she saw the two names at the bottom. Alarm bells went off in her mind and she pinched her thighs to clarify if she was dreaming.'This is not good. How did they find out?' Elise wondered. More than being frightened, she was vexed and she couldn't put a reason behind it. She didn't know why she was exasperated. But she was. The twins were getting on their nerves and she didn't like it.Elise wanted to inform Kai about the email. But she thought against it. The twins were clearly targeting her. Otherwise, she wouldn't have received the email out of nowhere.'But why?' Elise pursed her lips as she read the two names again and again.Elise pushed her against her cheek thoughtfully as she composed a reply.'Although I should be scared that you two know the reason why I was at your club earlier this evening, I'm more miffed because you're crossing your limits here. Please stay within your limits. Otherwise, it'll do you no good.'Elise.Elise sent the email before s
Elise pulled down her black dress as she glared at her colleague and friend, Kai, shooting daggers at him through the mirror. She was extremely uncomfortable in the dress and as every second passed, she had all the notion of aborting the mission and choosing another path, one that did not have her to dress up skimpily, even if the dress was anything but that.Kai just winked at her as he pushed his copper brown hair, ruffling it until he was satisfied. "You look hot, Elise. Calm down." He tried, only to stop when Elise picked up the gun in front of the mirror and pointed it at his head."You better stop speaking before I put a bullet through your head."Kai just raised his hands in mock surrender and took a step away from her, his smile still intact on his face."You are annoying. Remind me again why we became friends and why I even accepted to dress up so...so..." Elise fumbled to find an apt word to describe her attire."Gorgeously? Sexily?" Kai added."I meant horrendously." Elise

Elise sucked in a deep breath before she accepted the call. "Yes, Chief?""Elise, why haven't you updated me on the status of the investigation yet?" She heard a harsh voice from the other end and felt her blood boil in fury. 'It had barely been a few minutes since I arrived and this man was dying to get reports from me. How annoying!' She cursed under her breath and looked at her shoe, kicking away the broken piece of brick as though it was her Chief's head she was kicking."Chief, we are yet to investigate the matter completely. We have only begun." She tried but was interrupted by the shithead of a man. "Elise, I do not want any excuses. Do your job well."
