Marie's POV

A growing unsettlement dwelled within me. For some reason leaving my father alone in the room with that man seemed a bit off-putting.

But my father was the Head of the family. He had his rights for private discussion no matter his age. But more and more I felt the need to reach out and know exactly what they were talking about.

Call it curiosity, but I couldn't stop thinking about it.

“You may go and rest Heiress. We'll take care of everything and besides, you're just coming back from your travels” a voice beside me spoke.

I turned and looked at him a bit confused. Obviously, I didn't know him, but it was my understanding that guards weren't so… Conservative.

I smiled at him after taking his consideration into mind. Unwillingly I dragged myself from the front door of the room my father was having a meeting at.

My luggage had already been carried to my rooms and Dante my brother was nowhere to be found.

“Thank you” I smiled warmly at the guard that showed me my way to my rooms. He seemed a bit surprised at my warmth but returned the smile and left.

Alone in my room I was left with nothing but my thoughts. I had begun missing my friends at school. Jane, Lily, Jake.

Maybe I should call them….

But I didn't feel like it right now, at least not until my father was done or else I would never be able to rest.

Bored. I began counting the design patterns on the ceiling. I didn't want to think about how I was going to deal with being the Mafia Heiress.

It was a considerable responsibility that I wasn't sure I was ready for. Although I maintained a strong self to my father, I was scared beyond reason.

While my mind was riddled with my thoughts. My ears caught the sound of a gun.

I stood up immediately and looked towards the door. My heart began thumping fast. The shot didn't come from anywhere near me and that was the problem.

I heard a scurry of footsteps running in a particular direction. Immediately I bolted down the stairs with everything in me.

It didn't matter that I scraped my leg against a marble tile, or that I almost tumbled down on the steps as I ran, or that I landed with my heart incidentally breaking my nose.

It all didn't matter. Because right in front of me were my father's men. Banging at the door. Trying to force their way through.

My body moved before my mind could.

I struggled between the men, forcing my way through the rush of guards. Some tried holding me back, telling me something as useless as.

It's dangerous. Screw that. My father was inside there, and I don't know what the hell was going on.

As soon as I reached the door. At the same time the door was thrown open by the man who had been banging against it.

But I ran into the room before him.

Before me was a man. A man I had dismissed. His qualities seemed average at best. Everything about him could be forgotten if you didn't take time to notice him.

But I remembered him. It was the man who always stayed at the side of the Mafia Lord. However he was holding a gun. Leveled at me.

His eyes met with mine. A cold calculating gaze that sent a shiver down my spine.

Then he shot me. The pain rippled through my entire being. But he shot again in succession. And again.

I crumpled to the floor. The bullets lodged in my belly burned with seating heat. My voice wouldn't work.

I was in too much shock. Not just at the fact that I had been shot, but also in front of me. Laying on the floor was my father.

His knees had been shot.

I panicked. No, I was scared.

“Fa… father” I tried to speak, but blood gurgled out from my lips falling to the ground. Underneath me, I could feel my blood flowing out faster than I could imagine.

My vision blurred for a brief moment as my hands fell to the ground. By this point, my blood has looked around me. Turning the white silk dress I was wearing a deep crimson red.

“What have you done? You fool!” I heard the Mafia Lord shout at the man who shot me. I was confused.

Why was he shouting at his man? Wasn't this all part of their plan. But I could hear another voice calling out my name continuously.

“Marie. Marie, can you hear me? Please help my daughter, I'm begging you” cries filled my ears as heads reached out to me.

It was a familiar voice. Aah, it must have been my father's.

I couldn't think straight anymore. My thoughts fell as I slipped in and out of consciousness. My father's men guarded me as they dragged me away. I was too weak to move at this point, so I let myself be dragged with no resistance.

The pain in my belly has lessened a little. In the sense that it didn't burn, but it still hurts like nothing I had ever experienced.

I was losing myself.

I gritted my teeth and forced my eyes open. No, I wasn't going to die. I wasn't going to let my father die either.

Before I could finish my statement, a group of men ran into the house. These men I did not know, complete strangers. But I looked harder.

These were strangers with guns.

And they opened fire. Shooting and killing every single person within their sight. I was already on the ground bleeding and racked with pain, but my shock was even greater as my father's men fell dead on the found beside me.

They all dropped like flies. And I watched my drop like flies.

But they ignored me for some reason. But who wouldn't? I was drenched in a pool of my blood. Near death.

I tried looking back at my father, but everything began growing dim. As though the light escaped my eyes. I strained against myself, trying to reach.

To say something. To do something.

Darkness.
