Veronica looked at the two boys. It was kind of sweet that they both wanted to protect her against each other. It was after they stepped forward and stood together quietly in unison, that she decided to get closer.

But when Prince Vaugn announced that it was a dragon, her heart skipped a beat. She stood there staring at the creature. It’s scales were so shiny and it’s wings were magnificent. If it had been closer with no divide between them, would she still be so fascinated or would she be frightened?

“No hatred.” Roger said, as he looked up at Prince Vaugn. “Help with keep…er.” Veronica looked at him. He wanted to free the dragon so that it would help protect them against the keeper. If anyone could do it, a dragon seemed plenty capable.

I didn’t like him touching her one bit. But when he finished by creating a way for her to protect herself, I decided it was ok. He had almost thanked me for saving my cub mate. It went a long way to making me feel better about him.The dragon had told me it was me who he should thank. It was true that I had chased the thing off. And it had been for her. But I wasn’t thinking about how it could benefit anyone else, at the time. The prince attached a couple pieces of leather over his hands and legs. I suppose it would help in protecting him. But I wonder how he uses it.Veronica was so interested in what the prince monster was saying that I felt left out. But I smiled when I thought about how she had squeezed my hand, when the Prince almost thanked me. It made me happy that she acknowledged I was res

Veronica went back to Prince Vaugn’s room. Her dad had stopped coming to tuck her in a long time ago, especially when she already said good night. So she would not be missed. But when they got back, Roger was no longer in the room that they had left him in. They were depending on Roger to show them the way. So, they had to wait for him.“Roger! Come out!” She whispered fiercely but there was no response. She turned to Prince Vaugn. “Did you scare him away?” She was half teasing. Although, she wouldn’t be surprised if Roger had decided not to help them after the prince’s attitude.Prince Vaugn just put his hands on his hips and called out to Roger. “Come on, kid. Let’s get this thing going.”

They took the secret passage down to the dark damp dungeon because they wanted to avoid anyone who might be moving throughout the castle at night. Everyone should be in bed already but there still might be lingering guards. Veronica didn’t want to risk it.It didn’t take long for Prince Vaugn to agree. It seemed that Roger was agreeable with that too. But Veronica suspected that Roger wanted to see Prince Vaugn struggle through the tight passages again. The walls were Roger’s home, Veronica thought. She appreciated him sharing it with her.Once they had gotten close to the door that should never be opened, she expected Roger to open the way. But he paused, looking through the cracks. “Look.” He whispered. She bent down to peek through. Her father stood at the door, scratching his

As the dragon flew up into the darkness, Veronica clasped Prince Vaugn’s hand. It was thrilling to be going up, up, up. Her heart beat fast. She thought maybe she should be concerned about letting the dragon out. But it felt like the right thing to do and she did not regret it. Prince Vaugn smiled at her, as he closed his fingers around hers. They shot out of the darkness within the crevice faster than an arrow. They flew into the sky at high speeds. It felt like they would careen into the millions of glittery stars that filled the sky.“How beautiful.” She whispered. Prince Vaugn nodded. As the dragon leveled out above the mountains, Veronica and Prince Vaugn both glanced back at Roger, who appeared to be sleeping in the dragon’s clutches. “Is he going to be ok?”

They entered the dining hall, quietly. The castle seemed to groan around them, almost as if it were coming alive. When they entered the dark dining room, they could see nothing. It was twice as dark as the rest of the castle with no light breaking through.Veronica and Prince Vaugn were slinking through the dark when something grabbed them from behind. Prince Vaugn swung his sword and Veronica struggled. He deflected his blade at the last second, when he realized it was their fathers who had them.Veronica breathed in heavily and wrapped her arms around her father. “Dad, are you alright?” She asked quietly. He put a finger over his lips and pointed at the corner of the room. It blended in perfectly with the shadows that filled the room. The keeper was larger than a horse at this point. It slept in the co

The healer told them her name was Gale. She was so pretty that Veronica thought she sparkled with her silky blonde hair and annoyingly light blue eyes. Her spunky attitude flustered Veronica.Gale did nothing to mask her ogling of the prince. To his credit, Prince Vaugn did not seem to notice the girl’s obvious attention. She had followed them from the village to the outskirts of town. But they didn’t stop. Her voice was hesitant as she asked, “where are we going?”Veronica rolled her eyes. “I told you my father needs your help and that we were attacked by a creature. He is really injured. Possibly poisoned.”Prince Vaugn stumbled slightly. Gale was by his side in an instant with a worried expression on her face. “Are

I watched the noisy girls as they fought over who knows what. Prince Vaugn seemed perplexed. But aside from Veronica’s rising temper, there didn’t seem to be any danger. We had made it to the cabin and everyone had a place around the room. The front door was left open to include Sladesaple. When we were waiting for Veronica to fetch the healer, he told me that his name was Disacland Sladesaple but it was obvious I could not say all that.Sladesaple suggested I only say part of it. But even that was hard. It was frustrating because I wanted to talk to my cub mate just as good as the monster prince.Veronica sat down in a wooden chair. Gale laughed and sat on her lap, as Prince Vaugn laid the father monster on the bed. Veronica tried to push Gale away.

With the encouragement of the girls, I brought the map outside so that Saple could see where we were going. Veronica knew the importance of our ride knowing the way. Gale had said using the dragon was the only way they would make it back in time to save the father monster.Saple looked at it for a long moment. Then he snorted and tossed his head. The movement ended with a sneeze.“I remember the great war that claimed those lands because I fought in them. That was long ago.” Saple explained in a knowing voice that made him sound especially wise. “There is a nearby fort we should visit. It was once a thriving metropolis and is sure to have the answer to fighting the keeper.”Roger glanced at Veronica. She was standing in the middle of the cabin with both hands on her hips, making a displeased

It was twice the height of a man with several flaps of scales around a giant slobbery mouth and rows of giant unrelenting, gnashing teeth. The leathery weather worn skin was wrapped tautly around it, as if it was too big for it’s own skin. It lurched angrily forward from a dark red world of fire. The mysterious portal revealed the other side like an open door. A world of brimstone and lava. There was no place like it in this world. The ground shook. The hulking mass of disgust slithered into the room. It’

Veronica walked into the forest and hit a tree with a bare fist. She wanted to cry. Despite being alone without anyone to impress, her tears would not come. Maybe she had already cried them all. She was so confused about her relationship with Prince Vaugn, while she appreciated the simplicity of her relationship with Roger. She had learned to love Roger completely. But there wasn’t the same attraction to him as there was with the prince and there were other emotions that she didn’t quite understand. It seemed like those emotions were what fueled the confusion. She remembered how Prince Vaugn had promised to listen to her and take her advice when it came to leading his country. It was a beautiful dream he had taken away. While she did not feel the same passion for it, the journey ahead with Ro

A strange mewling noise caught her attention. She swallowed back her tears as she turned towards the noise. The dragon was lamenting the loss of Roger. It was the most miserable and saddest thing she had ever seen or heard.Suddenly, Saple’s eyes glowed bright red. He roared, as he let go of a stream of fire into the air, and magic crackled like lightning around them. The storm clouds built quickly around Saple and Roger but this time they engulfed the entire area, leaving Veronica stumbling around in a purple fog.She wasn’t sure what she was seeing between the darkness and the limited sight of the grainy fog. But the dragon was nuzzling Roger. Saple seemed to be glowing and shrinking as he poured himself into whatever spell and emotions he was experiencing.Veronica stood frozen in

We attacked with dragon fire again and again until I completely lost track of time. Saple and I had two sets of senses to rely on. We each had our own thoughts to process and evaluate the fight and we were able to understand each other without having to take the time to express it.It made us quicker.“Your years hiding in the shadows and avoiding humans has kept you sharp and alert, little one.” Saple complimented me. We had pulled back to regroup again and were considering how much work there was to do.As the keeper shrunk, it got faster. Together we were still twice as fast as the creature. But at this rate, we were going to need to fight all night and I could already feel the fatigue weighing on Saple.“You would b

We flew to the castle. But the closer we got, the darker it was. Trees were quickly losing leaves but it was the wrong season for that. The air was cold.“The keeper is drawing life out of everything within its reach. It has an unending hunger. The devastation will reach the next village by night fall if we don’t stop it now.” Saple rumbled.I didn’t need a reminder of how scary this was and knowledge like that didn’t seem helpful. But it came from my own dragon! I admired the wisdom that was now available to me and am grateful for the wonderful company.“Does the keeper have power over the skies?” I asked. As we approached the castle, the sky grew overcast with dark grey clouds. They were unusual. While the clouds were heavy and

Once back at the cabin, I carried my cubmate inside first. I placed her on the bed next to the father monster. Gale was at her side, looking worried, in a matter of seconds. The prince I laid on the bear rug. It was the worst type of item in this cabin but it looked like the softest place. Gale hurried over to check on him.“I think your lady friend is going to be alright, Dragon Rider. She just had an awful fright.” I didn’t bother asking her how she knew but I trusted her medicine. She kneeled next to the prince. When she began examining him for the cause of his condition, she pulled back clothing to reveal the keeper’s bite. Gale looked up at me with those pretty bright blue eyes.“I hope you found the flower because w

When I woke up, I was confused for a few minutes about where I was and what was happening. Everything looked weird. All the colors around me were so much brighter and the darkness had much more depth.I didn’t understand. But there was an important mission that we came here for that needed my attention right now. I looked over where the snake had come out.The blue flower was laying on it’s side on the ground but I cannot remember how it got separated from its stem. I picked it up gently. Calling out to my cub mate, I offered it excited to see the joy I brought to her face. But then she reacted in the strangest of ways! I caught her as she fell and helped her gently to the ground. I didn’t know why she fell asleep. It had been a long day but that explanation did not feel right to me.

Then, there was nothing. I floated in a black sea that rocked me soothingly, as I let it carry me away. But suddenly it was bright.Groaning, I opened my eyes to see that I was standing downstairs in the castle I called home. I walked through that familiar dark door. Recognizing my younger self immediately, I felt a wave of sadness mix with a disorienting sense of future gloom. My father stood in the middle of the room. Opening his arms, the rider walked in a circle indicating all the creatures that lined the walls. He stopped in front of the younger me.The younger me looked up at him with big scared eyes as I shook my head vehemently. “I don’t want to.” I was telling him with urgency and I remembered how I felt at that moment. The feeling of fam

It didn’t take long before I saw I was alone and that I could no longer see Saple. My worry choked me. I walked in a circle, trying to find my cub mate or the monster prince but I didn’t see them anywhere. Finally, I collapsed into a sitting position.I kicked the scattered skull that was closest to my foot and gasped as a bright color caught my attention. I crawled over to it. The purple flower that we were looking for grew out of a hole in the ground. It’s thick colorful green stem disappeared deep into the earth. I reached for it. Pulling my hand back suddenly, I gasped from the pain and saw the bloo
