I watched the noisy girls as they fought over who knows what. Prince Vaugn seemed perplexed. But aside from Veronica’s rising temper, there didn’t seem to be any danger.

We had made it to the cabin and everyone had a place around the room. The front door was left open to include Sladesaple. When we were waiting for Veronica to fetch the healer, he told me that his name was Disacland Sladesaple but it was obvious I could not say all that.

Sladesaple suggested I only say part of it. But even that was hard. It was frustrating because I wanted to talk to my cub mate just as good as the monster prince.

Veronica sat down in a wooden chair. Gale laughed and sat on her lap, as Prince Vaugn laid the father monster on the bed. Veronica tried to push Gale away.

With the encouragement of the girls, I brought the map outside so that Saple could see where we were going. Veronica knew the importance of our ride knowing the way. Gale had said using the dragon was the only way they would make it back in time to save the father monster.Saple looked at it for a long moment. Then he snorted and tossed his head. The movement ended with a sneeze.“I remember the great war that claimed those lands because I fought in them. That was long ago.” Saple explained in a knowing voice that made him sound especially wise. “There is a nearby fort we should visit. It was once a thriving metropolis and is sure to have the answer to fighting the keeper.”Roger glanced at Veronica. She was standing in the middle of the cabin with both hands on her hips, making a displeased

I was little again, maybe five. Up until I saw the look in the monster king’s haunted eyes at Saple’s cell, all I could remember from back then was how scared I had always been. But now, I watched the child who was me. I ran around in circles beneath a blazing sun in a giant green field filled with little white flowers. I was laughing and playing happily. Looking up from the field, my younger self started jumping around as if I saw the best thing in the world. In the sky, a dragon descended. With a bubbly excitement, I ran up to the dragon after it was on the ground and assaulted the rider. A hearty laugh escaped the rider’s throat. He bent over and rubbed my young head with a joyful smile. “How’s my little man, Roderick?” The name shocked me, as I remembered the King calling me by that name that day. It wa

It was twice the height of a man with several flaps of scales around a giant slobbery mouth and rows of giant unrelenting, gnashing teeth. The leathery weather worn skin was wrapped tautly around it, as if it was too big for it’s own skin. It lurched angrily forward from a dark red world of fire. The mysterious portal revealed the other side like an open door. A world of brimstone and lava. There was no place like it in this world. The ground shook. The hulking mass of disgust slithered into the room. It’

Veronica walked into the forest and hit a tree with a bare fist. She wanted to cry. Despite being alone without anyone to impress, her tears would not come. Maybe she had already cried them all. She was so confused about her relationship with Prince Vaugn, while she appreciated the simplicity of her relationship with Roger. She had learned to love Roger completely. But there wasn’t the same attraction to him as there was with the prince and there were other emotions that she didn’t quite understand. It seemed like those emotions were what fueled the confusion. She remembered how Prince Vaugn had promised to listen to her and take her advice when it came to leading his country. It was a beautiful dream he had taken away. While she did not feel the same passion for it, the journey ahead with Ro

A strange mewling noise caught her attention. She swallowed back her tears as she turned towards the noise. The dragon was lamenting the loss of Roger. It was the most miserable and saddest thing she had ever seen or heard.Suddenly, Saple’s eyes glowed bright red. He roared, as he let go of a stream of fire into the air, and magic crackled like lightning around them. The storm clouds built quickly around Saple and Roger but this time they engulfed the entire area, leaving Veronica stumbling around in a purple fog.She wasn’t sure what she was seeing between the darkness and the limited sight of the grainy fog. But the dragon was nuzzling Roger. Saple seemed to be glowing and shrinking as he poured himself into whatever spell and emotions he was experiencing.Veronica stood frozen in
