Mr. John smiled and replied, "My daughter studied business administration at the University of Nigeria."
"That's fine. You should submit her CV to us once she's home. I am sure we have more vacancies for newbies like her. I will be expecting to see her," Mr. Taiye replied.
"Father!" Liam quickly interrupted his father, his frown deepening.
"You cannot just court me with her yet," Liam said. His father smiled at him and replied, "I know, son. I am only trying to compensate Mr. John Patrick for his goodwill and commitment to working with us for over twenty years."
Mr. John smiled as he bowed slightly to leave. "I will be taking my leave now, Boss. Thank you and congratulations once again, Liam," he said as he excused himself.
Liam sighed as he heard Mr. John's last words. He walked with his father to the front of the meeting hall, and as they stood near the exit door, he spoke, "Father, I don't like what you just did. There are many other ways to compensate Mr. John Patrick, not at my own detriment."
"What do you mean by that, Liam? Mr. John has been a committed worker here. I know you won't understand because you're new with us, but it's okay. Besides, he said if his daughter agreed. So she might not even consider working with us, and there's no need for you to panic about what was just said," Mr. Taiye replied, turning to leave the meeting hall.
Liam remarked, "I hope she doesn’t, father. Women aren’t my interest for now."
"Liam," Mr. Taiye paused and stared back at his son. He shook his head, saying, "You don't say that to your mother. Someday you'll find a good wife, but for now, let's focus on business and forget about what was just said."
"Okay, father," Liam agreed, watching his father exit the meeting hall, leaving only him inside. His assistant, Brown, walked back into the meeting hall to meet him immediately after his father left.
"Boss, what should I do now?" Brown asked, standing in front of Liam.
"Prepare the car. I will be going home for today. Official duties start tomorrow," Liam said.
"Okay, Boss," Brown replied, exiting the meeting hall on the second floor. He went downstairs to inform Liam's personal driver, Israel, to prepare the car.
"Israel, get the car ready. The boss is about to leave now," Brown said.
"Okay," Israel replied, waiting for Liam to step out. He stood watching the Benson Group, a five-story building with many staff.
Liam stepped out of the elevator and walked toward his car in the driveway. Some workers stood outside discussing that it was a free day, with no work available to be carried out since Liam's father had given them the day off to witness him become the new CEO.
Liam hopped into his car, settling in the back seat, while Israel started the engine and drove home to the Benson villa.
Arriving at the mansion premises, Israel parked while Liam stepped out of the car and walked into the mansion. He entered the living room of the one-story duplex.
His mother wasn't in the living room but in the kitchen cooking. Despite having maids, Mrs. Juliet Jackson preferred cooking as she loved preparing their local African dishes.
A maid stepped out to welcome Liam as she heard the sound of the car arriving. She greeted him, "Welcome back, Master Liam."
"Thank you," Liam replied, staring away from her and making his way into the kitchen to find his mother. The aroma of the food she was preparing had filled the entire living room with its delicious scent.
Mrs. Juliet was preparing delicious Egusi soup garnished with beef and dried fish.
"Good afternoon, Mom," Liam greeted her as he entered the kitchen. The two maids assisting her immediately greeted him, "Welcome back, Master Liam."
"Thank you," Liam said, while his mother washed her hands in the kitchen sink and dried them with a short kitchen towel. She walked up to give him a warm hug.
"Welcome home, son. How was your day at the office?" She asked.
"It was fine, Mother. Hasn't my father arrived home?" Liam asked. His mother shook her head and replied, "No, son. He's probably with his friends. You know he's happy that you've finally returned home and taken up the position as the new CEO."
"I know that, Mom," Liam smiled and stepped out of the kitchen. His mother instructed the cook on what to do as her meal was almost ready.
"Just keep watch on it so it won't get burned. Once it is ready, serve it right out," Mrs. Juliet instructed a maid.
"Okay, ma'am," the maid responded. She was the cook, and headed all the maids in the mansion.
Meanwhile, Mrs. Juliet into the living room to meet her son, sitting on the long couch in the living room, and stretching his long legs. She wore a brown gown and removed her apron as she handed it over to a maid who stepped up to her.
"Here, take this to the laundry room and wash it," she said.
"Okay, ma'am." The maid collected the apron and left, while Mrs. Juliet walked up to sit across from Liam in the living room.
"Mom, why are you stressing about cooking when you have the cook at your service?" Liam asked, watching his mother sit across from him.
"I know that, my son, but you know cooking is a part of exercise, and I enjoy it too. I cannot leave all the work to the maids and cook alone. I might end up becoming lazy and sick. Likewise, I have already retired this year from the nursing home before you returned," she explained.
"It's okay, Mother. As long as you're not stressed about it, I'm okay with that," he said.
"Not at all, Liam. Tell me, how did the event go?" she asked.
"It was fine, Mom. Just a simple meeting with the new staff, but I didn't like how some of the female staff dressed," Liam said, his face twisted in irritation.
"What do you mean by that? Weren't they wearing clothes, or how did you expect them to dress?" Mrs. Juliet inquired, confused by her son's claims.
"Decently, Mother! That's how female staff are supposed to dress for the office. Decent, not trying to seduce anyone at work," Liam said and his mother gasped.
"Oh, Liam! They're young female staff and probably searching for a husband. You don't expect them to dress like a married woman to work and covering everywhere. Besides, they might want you to admire one of them," she said.
"No, Mother! That's not something I will allow. Tomorrow I will give out a new dress code order to Brown. Any of the new female staff and old staff who cannot follow it are expected to quit," Liam said, his face twisted in irritation.
"Liam! You won't do just that. You have just resumed as the CEO, and you shouldn't be harsh to your colleagues at the office just because you're their new boss," Mrs. Juliet said, frowning.
"I'm sorry, Mom. But that's how I would like them to start dressing from tomorrow onwards. I will have them inspected at the gate before they're allowed into the company. "I have already prepared the dress code. Brown will give out the information to them tomorrow," Liam explained, standing up from the couch to return to his room above.
Mrs. Juliet looked dumbfounded and finally called him, "Liam." He stopped and apologized, "I'm sorry, Mom, but if Dad interferes in this, then I will have to resign from the company. One must keep his or her focus, and avoid distraction. Likewise, I won't like to be tempted by my female staff."
"Alright, Liam. If that's how you want it. I just hope it won't affect the company's growth," Mrs. Juliet said.
"No, Mother," Liam smiled, seeing that she had agreed. "I will go upstairs and freshen up and come back to join you for dinner. The aroma of the soup is inviting; let me freshen up first."
"Okay, my son, I will be expecting you," Mrs. Juliet said, watching Liam took stairs and went to his room. She sighed and looked at the dinning room.
The house was a duplex. Although her husband owned it, Mrs. Juliet preferred living there in the Benson's Villa, as it kept many past memories alive.
She stood up from the couch and walked up to the dining table to serve dinner with the help of her maids.
Her husband arrived home with a friend named Mr. Tunji Martin.
Mrs. Juliet walked ahead and welcomed them as they entered the living room and met her going to the dinner table.
"Welcome, honey," she said, hugging her husband. Although he was 68 years old, she didn't fail to call him "honey."
"Wow, the aroma of the soup is inviting me," Mr. Taiye praised his wife, and kissed her cheek affectionately.
"Thank you," she smiled.
"Where's Liam? Isn't he back yet?" Mr. Taiye asked, still hugging her.
"He's back; he went up to freshen up," Mrs. Juliet replied.
"Okay. Meet my friend, Tunji Martin. We have a business discussion, but that can wait until after dinner. As Tunji will be joining us," Mr. Taiye informed her.
"Okay, honey. Welcome, sir." Mrs. Juliet smiled at Mr. Tunji, and he greeted her, "Well done, ma."
Anita goes back home with her father and mother, who arrived at her school to witness her final graduation ceremony. Her mother is very happy, but her father keeps his usual non-smiling face as he drives them home. He's proud that Anita didn't allow her beauty to deter her from becoming successful in life, but nonetheless, he's still confused as to why she's the prettiest of all his daughters.Even though his wife didn't give him a son, he isn't bothered by that, as their custom permits a woman to inherit all her father's property even if she's married to another man. However, he still wonders if he's Anita's true biological father.Sighing, he drives towards their home since the university is closer to their house in the city.Arriving home, he drives into their simple compound and parks. Their home is a simple bungalow with four bedrooms, a living room, and a kitchen.Mr. Joshua Baker is the owner of the house, having acquired it from the original landowners. He steps out of the car
Mrs. Tonia smiles faintly at Anita as Anita makes way for Glory to pass with the tray of soup in her hands. Anita walks into the kitchen without uttering any words to her mother, but her face holds a great sorrow that her mom understands better."Anita," Mrs. Tonia slowly calls her name."What is it, mom?" Anita asks as she walks beside her mother."I want you to know that your father really loves you, like the rest of your siblings, and isn't against your success," Mrs. Tonia replies, holding Anita's hand in hers."Hmph," Anita sighs. "I know, mom, but I don't care about that. If Dad likes me, fine; if he doesn't, fine. I will always see him as my father, and that's all.""Anita," Mrs. Tonia begins."Mom, where's the fufu?!" Flora steps into the kitchen and interrupts them. She looks at Anita and walks to the kitchen cabinet to meet their mother."Mom, why are you holding her hands and talking to her? Are you begging her for something?" Flora asks again, crossing her arms over her che
Mrs. Tonia didn't say anything after Flora exited the room. She sighed and walked up to sit beside Anita on the bed, while Favour and Esther also exited the room."You shouldn't be so harsh with your sister. Fighting with her wasn't necessary," Mrs. Tonia said to Anita as she sat beside her on the bed."I know, mom, but they keep disrespecting me too much, and it's getting out of hand," Anita replied."It's okay. I understand, but don't change yourself because of them. Keep being my sweet and calm daughter," Mrs. Tonia advised Anita."Okay, mom," Anita sighed as she stared at her mother, while Glory walked up to sit on the bed too."I've got to go now and meet your father. Glory, go now, pack your bags, and come join Anita here," Mrs. Tonia said."Okay, mom," Glory replied. She stood up from the bed and walked out of the room to the one she shared with Lisa. Flora was already there, arranging her clothes into the wardrobe, but she didn't say a word to Glory, who stepped in and carried
Anita couldn't say anything after their mother left them to be with their father. She sighed and stared back at Flora, who seemed worried, as they walked back to sit on the couch."What do you think is the problem?" Esther asked Flora, but Flora shook her head and replied, "I don't know, but I am worried it's something serious."They sat back on the couch, waiting for their father or mother to step out and talk to them. Anita sighed and finally walked back to her room, not knowing what the problem was. She believed her mother would let them know, even if her father didn't want to, as she saw her father was already dressed to leave for work before receiving whatever news made him devastated. She prayed silently in her heart, "Let it not be that my father has lost his job."Anita shook her head and walked back into her room, feeling that her father's scream had something to do with his office work. She sat on her bed and picked up her phone to type her letter of application to the Benson
Liam walked into his office and took his seat in his executive chair, swirling it sideways and staring around his office. He smiled and rolled up his sleeves to start his new day at the office, leaning forward to his desk and switching on his computer to check the company's records. He waited for the computer to finish booting.Liam tick-tocked the time as he waited for the computer to boot up. Just then, his secretary knocked, and he responded, "Come in."Margret walked into his office, holding a file, and smiled faintly at him, staring downward a little before stopping in front of his desk."Yes... What's your name again?" Liam asked her as he looked up at her pretty face."Margret Jonathan," she said, still smiling at him."Okay, Miss Margret, what do you want, or what can I help you with?" Liam asked her."Sir, Mr. John Patrick brought this file this morning and said I should hand it over to you," Margret replied, staring at him."Okay, drop it here." Liam pointed to the space on h
"Hello, boss," Margret quickly picked up the office line and received the call."Come into my office right away," Liam responded. Margret gulped, quickly stood up from her seat, and dropped the phone. She saw Bambam smiling at her as she prepared to attend to a client sitting in front of her. Some clients stepped into Margret's office to see her, but she immediately directed them to other staff on the third floor, knowing the new boss didn't like to be kept waiting. Margret walked towards Liam's office door, knocked gently, and heard his cold response, "Come in."Margret gulped as she opened his office door and walked in."What took you so long to respond to my call?" Liam asked, continuing to type on his computer without looking away from the monitor."I'm sorry, boss, I arrived late from lunch," Margret replied. Liam paused his typing and looked up at her."Do you want to be fired?" he asked."No, boss," Margret responded nervously, fumbling with her fingers as her palms became sweat
Temisa is in her father's mansion, a standard duplex in a government-owned estate that her father bought as a new house."Father, have you submitted my CV and letter of application to the new boss?" Temisa asked as her father stepped into the living room. She sat on the long couch, filing and brushing her long nails.Mr. John stared at his daughter. Instead of standing up and welcoming him, she sat comfortably on the couch, filing her nails and asking him questions as if he were her errand boy."Temisa, you're quite unbelievable; not even a welcome greeting for your father?" Mr. John asked as he dropped his briefcase on the center table and loosened his necktie."I am sorry, father. Good evening, father. Welcome home," Temisa said, dropping her leg from the couch where it had been resting."Where's your mother?" Mr. John asked."She went to the market to refill the house with food.""And your elder brother?""Father, I'm not their keeper, and I don't know where Martin went either," Tem
"Mom, I cannot work with them if that's what their new boss now wants from them," Temisa refuted as she stood up from the couch. She had been sitting with her mother when Felicia left with the car key to offload the car's boot."I can understand you, Temisa, but know that your father went through the stress to get your application submitted to their boss. It will be very insulting to your father if, after their new boss approves you, you fail to resume with them. Remember, your results aren't even the best, and yet they want you to work with them," Mrs. Bianca said."But mother..." Temisa was lost for words as she stared at her mother, a beautiful, full-figured black woman."Just think about it, Temisa, and be easy on yourself. You're lucky your father is doing all this to get you to the top among your peers. He told me personally that the CEO's father wants you to be engaged with his son, and the only way you can be engaged with his son is by getting closer to him and building a bond
Liam doesn't say anything as he stands watching the two friends reunite and forgive each other. They finally stand up, and Temisa walks over to see the twin babies in their little baby bed in the living room."Wow, they look so much like Liam, but my baby resembles me more than Alfred," Temisa says, while Anita only smiles at her."It's all good, girlfriend. I wish you both a happy married life, and I will be your bridesmaid on your wedding day," Temisa proposes, and Anita shakes her head."Flora already filled that position. You will only join the train.""Okay, dear. I have to be on my way now. You know I just darted out from the house as soon as Alfred told me about your babies and that you're here with Liam. Take good care of yourself, girlfriend, as you look slim," Temisa says, while Anita nods to her."I will. Let me escort you," Anita feels all the previous heaviness in her heart disappear, and she walks out of the mansion with Temisa. They walk to the garage where Temisa's car
Mrs. Tonia quickly greets Mrs. Juliet, "Good evening, ma'am.""Yes, welcome. Let's go in first," Mrs. Juliet ushers them into her living room. Just then, Mr. Taiye walks in too and sees the visitors, noticing Liam carefully carrying a baby in his arms. He recognizes the familiar lady as his son's secretary and immediately knows the babies are the result of the encounter they had in Liam's office."Good evening, Father," Liam happily greets his father. Mr. Taiye nods to all their greetings, while Anita nervously stares downward, feeling uncomfortable, remembering Mr. Taiye had warned her to stay clear of his son and never show her face in his company again."Mother, here are your grandkids," Liam walks over to meet his mother, who is sitting on the living room couch. He carefully places the baby boy in her arms, and Mrs. Juliet is still in shock as Liam never told her his secretary was pregnant or that he was bringing his babies home.Mr. Taiye is the most confused as he remembers he w
"Are you married?" Liam finally asks, sounding hurt. Anita shakes her head and replies, "No.""Then how come the babies?" Liam asks as he finally saunters over to meet her. He has missed her so much, and he doesn't look himself because of her."Anita," Liam finally approaches her, and she turns to face him, and he sees she's crying."I'm sorry," Anita cries, and Liam crosses the thin line between them and hugs her warmly."It's okay. I've missed you. I do love you," Liam comforts her in a hug, hoping whoever got her pregnant or married her doesn't step in and catch him hugging his wife.Anita wants to pull away from Liam as she inhales his cologne, realizing she's crying into his chest, but Liam hugs her tighter and raises her chin to face him."Don't you miss me?" he asks, and Anita sniffs."I do," she replies."And you don't want to kiss me or welcome me?"Anita finally raises her head properly and looks up at Liam's face.He looks sick too, so unlike him, and his beard is overgrown
Anita doesn't say anything as she watches her mother dress up in a green gown while she breastfeeds her little daughter, who sucks a lot, wanting to drain the remaining energy she has left."I have to go out now and buy everything we will need to eat tonight. There's no food in the kitchen, and I don't want to disturb Mama and her in-law.""Okay, Mom."Anita watches her mother walk out of the room. She carefully places her little girl down and walks to her phone to see all the text messages Liam sent to her. Her heartbeat increases as she unlocks her phone screen. She sees a lot of texts from him and love emojis and she smiles, staggering backward to sit on her bed to read his texts."What happened to you? Your mom said you got discharged from the hospital. Are you alright now? Not to worry, I will be coming down to your village to see you. But why did you shut us all out? I have really missed you. Honestly, I cannot stop thinking about the love we made, and I'm glad your mom finally
Mrs. Tonia pulls away from the mother-to-daughter hug and stares at Anita's face."It's okay, stop crying. Why did you run away, and who did you sleep with?" Mrs. Tonia questions as she walks to look at her grandkids. She stares at the two cute babies who are also awake and staring at her. She gasps in surprise as she isn't mistaken—the babies look so much like Liam, the CEO of Benson Group. She stares back at Anita, who’s also looking at her, and then back at the twin babies in their baby bed."Anita, who got you pregnant?" Mrs. Tonia asks again while Alice finally walks over to hold her hand."We can discuss this at home. Let it rest while we leave the hospital first."Mrs. Tonia sighs and looks from Alice to Anita and back to her grandbabies. They're so cute and fair, and now she knows why the CEO has kept on asking her about Anita. So he's the one that got her daughter pregnant and slept with Anita the very day he delayed her at work and made her return home late.Mrs. Tonia tries
Anita wakes up that evening with a light headache. She sits up in her bed and eats the dinner Alice brought for her from home."How are you feeling now? You need to breastfeed your babies and not starve them," Alice says. Anita finally looks at them as her eyes clear, and seeing one of them crying, Alice speaks to her."She's a girl, while the calm one here is a boy." Alice hands over the baby girl to Anita, who stares at her beautiful daughter's face. Her baby girl looks so much like Liam; even though she's very fair like her, her baby's short curly hair and round cute face resemble Liam so much. Anita's heart skips a beat as she keeps staring at her baby instead of breastfeeding her."Why are you still staring at her? Give her your breast milk" Alice finally yells at Anita, snapping her out of her daze. Anita opens up her shirt and breastfeeds her baby. The little girl in her arms stops crying after a while as she sucks on her breast. As if the second baby is aware, he resumes cryin
"I know," Liam replies and smiles back."But I still miss Anita and want to see her account," he says."Tell me the truth, boss. Do you just miss Anita, or are you in love with her and have a crush on her?" Temisa asks, and she sees Liam smile, which already answers her question."Just send me Anita's profile name. Let me search for her first.""Okay, I will," Temisa replies as she sits up properly."What about Alfred?" Liam finally asks her as he sees her sit up."He's not yet home. You know he runs the hotels and club too, cheating on me," Temisa pouts."He's not. He complains about you starving him," Liam tells her, and Temisa gasps."He said that? I know Alfred is so shameless," Temisa replies, and just then Alfred returns and walks into their room, as they both use one room together. Even though the room was his before she moved into his family house. His mother had insisted they must share a room together as a couple, and he clearly heard her call him a shameless man."Who are y
The line goes still for a while."Which sister are you talking about?" Barrister Jude asks."Oh, I just remembered I have her number, as her husband's case is with me. Mrs. Tonia, of course. Don't you know your sister again?" Mr. Collins questions."Oh, you mean her daughter is in the village? Which one?""I don't know her name yet, but she's white and very fair. She just gave birth to twins, making your sister a grandmother now.""Oh! You mean Anita?" Barrister Jude asks."Is that her name? Well, I don't know. I'm just seeing her for the first time now. Let me contact your sister then. I forgot I recently got her number due to her husband's case."Mr. Collins quickly ends the call, not giving Barrister Jude any more chances to question him. He cannot believe the silly man didn't want to help his in-law because of some past silly stories. He had to pity Mrs. Tonia and helped her case as he used to admire her when she hadn't married Mr. Joshua."Hello," Mr. Collins stands outside the h
Liam stares downward, not wanting to meet Mrs. Tonia's angry gaze, as he suspects she knows about the night he made love to Anita, but probably doesn't know who exactly slept with her.Was that why Anita left? What's really going on? he wonders."Actually, ma'am, I heard from her friend that she's going through a lot, and I don't know if I can help, but perhaps that will make her return.""Help with what? Just leave!" Mrs. Tonia shuts her door on Liam, not giving him a chance to speak.Did Anita's boss force himself on her? Mrs. Tonia wonders as she walks back to her parlor.Staring at the man, she sees him as a calm person with good moral upbringing, but is he the one that slept with her daughter and also bit and sucked on Anita's neck?If only Anita had told her the truth before she left, she wouldn't be rude to him, but she cannot help it. She behaves rudely because she misses her daughter so much.Liam leaves the building and walks back to his car.He knows her mother suspects him
