Anita goes back home with her father and mother, who arrived at her school to witness her final graduation ceremony. Her mother is very happy, but her father keeps his usual non-smiling face as he drives them home.
He's proud that Anita didn't allow her beauty to deter her from becoming successful in life, but nonetheless, he's still confused as to why she's the prettiest of all his daughters.
Even though his wife didn't give him a son, he isn't bothered by that, as their custom permits a woman to inherit all her father's property even if she's married to another man. However, he still wonders if he's Anita's true biological father.
Sighing, he drives towards their home since the university is closer to their house in the city.
Arriving home, he drives into their simple compound and parks. Their home is a simple bungalow with four bedrooms, a living room, and a kitchen.
Mr. Joshua Baker is the owner of the house, having acquired it from the original landowners. He steps out of the car while Anita and her mother follow. Anita's sisters, Flora, Esther, Favour, Lisa, and Glory, are all inside, but none of them step out to welcome them home.
Mrs. Tonia walks into the living room first, while Anita follows suit, dragging her boxes. Her father remains in the car, answering a phone call.
"Mom!" Esther and Favour rush up to their mother first, while Lisa and Glory step out next.
They all have separate rooms they share. Anita and Flora share a room, Esther and Favour share another, and Lisa and Glory share the last room, which sometimes serves as the guest room.
"Welcome back home, Mom. How did the event go?" Favour, an 18-year-old girl asks.
"Fine. Why don't you ask your big sister about it? She won two awards: best overall graduating student and best in her department," Mrs. Tonia responds with a smile.
"Who cares, Mom?" Favour frowns and replies.
"Shut up, Favour. Silly girl! Anita is your big sister, and you should accord her some respect!" Mrs. Tonia warns, while Esther quickly adds, "We don't care, Mom!"
"Esther!" Mrs. Tonia warns Esther too, while Esther rolls her eyes from where she's standing by the middle door entrance, holding the curtain.
"It's okay, Mom," Anita says, walking up to her mother and tapping her shoulder softly. But Mrs. Tonia responds, "Your father caused all this." Mrs. Tonia almost bursts into sobs, but then Mr. Joshua walks into the living room and asks, "Caused what?"
Mrs. Tonia sniffs and quickly wipes off her tears as she replies, "Nothing. I was just discussing something not important."
Mrs. Tonia quickly walks away into the kitchen while Mr. Joshua's eyes narrow at Anita, who smiles faintly at him. Although she isn't an albino, her beauty is too charming. Staring at her dimples and chubby cheeks makes her look like an angel from heaven.
"Fine, take all these bags inside. Where are your sisters? Flora, Favour!" Mr. Joshua calls them out.
"Yes, Papa! Good evening, Dad. Welcome back home."
Flora walks past Anita, who is dragging her boxes, and gives their father a welcome hug.
"Assist your sister and take those luggage inside," Mr. Joshua instructs Flora after giving her a warm hug. Flora bites her lower lip angrily but finally assists Anita by carrying her second box to the room they both share.
Anita doesn't utter a word to Flora, but as Flora turns to leave, Anita finally says, "Thank you." Flora doesn't respond and walks back to the living room to meet her father, who is sitting on the long couch, taking off his shoes.
"How was your day today, Flora?" Mr. Joshua finally asks, and just then, the rest of his daughters step out.
"Father, do you remember your promise to take me to a private university?" Esther asks.
"Yes, I remember, but you still haven't passed your Jamb exams yet. This is the fourth time you're writing the same exam with your younger sister, Favour. Can't you both learn from your elder sister, Anita?" Mr. Joshua questions them.
"No, Father!" Esther and Favour both respond, surprising their father and making his jaw drop.
"What has come over you girls? If you fail to pass your Jamb exams this year again, then forget about going to the university and look for a trade or handwork to learn! I cannot continue to waste my hard-earned money sponsoring you both through a private university when you cannot even qualify for a government university. Now leave my sight! Can't you learn from your elder sister for once? Don't you see her good grades, despite her being more beautiful than you all?"
"Father!" Flora, Esther, Favour, and Lisa all exclaim sadly.
"Shut your mouths and don't 'father' me. I have been a good father to you all, yet you cannot be good daughters in return. Fail your exam this year again and see the other side of me!" Mr. Joshua warns them, standing up from the couch. Just then, his wife steps out of the kitchen and stares at him and her five daughters in the living room.
"Excuse me!" Mr. Joshua walks past his daughters and into the room he shares with his wife, knowing it's entirely his fault. He has shown more love to the rest of his daughters than their eldest sister, Anita, making her feel like an outcast. Now, he's regretting it all.
He's also facing challenges at work, as some funds have gone missing under his records. If the error isn't corrected, he's on the verge of losing his job as a banker in a government-owned bank.
His brows furrow as his wife steps into their room to meet him a few minutes later.
"Aren't you being too harsh to our daughters today?" Mrs. Tonia questions him, but Mr. Joshua only glances at his wife without responding, loosening his necktie and taking off his long-sleeve shirt.
"I'm preparing dinner; it's already getting late," Mrs. Tonia informs him, but he still doesn't respond as he loosens his trouser belt.
"Honey, you aren't saying anything in response?" Mrs. Tonia finally asks him, and he replies, "What do you want me to say? Can't you see that I am busy?"
Mr. Joshua walks past his wife and steps into the bathroom to take his bath, while Mrs. Tonia sighs and shakes her head in sadness. She knows something is wrong with him, and he has been behaving unusually. He even acted happier when Anita was announced as the winner of the two prestigious awards. He jumped up happily and screamed "Yes!" Not minding the other parents and relatives around, he stood to witness the awarding of the best graduating student. When he saw Anita approaching, his smiles and happiness faded, as Anita didn't smile at them, thinking he hated her and wasn't proud of her achievement.
Mrs. Tonia smiles faintly, remembering how her husband had reacted to his daughter's wins. Although the school rewards weren't much, as they only awarded Anita some cash and medals, Mrs. Tonia believes her daughter's certificate will get her one of the highest-paying jobs in their country.
Sighing, Mrs. Tonia finally walks out of their room as her husband is already taking his bath. She can hear the sound of water splashing in the bathroom.
She walks into the kitchen, where the okra soup she was preparing has already heated a little. She serves it out on different plates. Just then, Glory walks into the kitchen to assist her and carry the plates to the dining room beside their living room.
Glory is a 14-year-old girl, and her children are spaced two years apart each. Glory is still in Junior Secondary School 3 (JSS3).
"Mom, I want to become a business administrator like my big sister," Glory says as she carries the tray of soup and looks up at her mother.
"There's no problem with that, Glory. You should study hard as well. You've got your big sister here to guide you," Mrs. Tonia smiles at her youngest daughter.
"Okay, Mom. Is Big sis going to marry soon? Chika told me that her big sister won't be returning home as she's already pregnant and expecting a child for her fiancé," Glory asks.
"No, Glory! Although I don't know about that yet, Anita will first get a job before she settles down. You know your big sister is hardworking and wants to become an independent woman instead of depending on a man for money," Mrs. Tonia replies to Glory.
"Oh, so Mom, do you depend on my father for money?" Glory inquires, surprising her mother.
"No, Glory! Now that's enough of the conversation. Carry the soup out now before it gets cold. Oh, Anita is already here to assist us," Mrs. Tonia smiles faintly, and Glory turns to face Anita, who is standing by the kitchen door.
Anita overhears their conversation, and she has a faint smile on her face too.
"Why are you standing there and staring at us? Come assist us in serving dinner. I'm sure your father will soon be out," Mrs. Tonia says, but Anita's smile quickly fades away as she hears her father's name. She doesn't like him either.
Mrs. Tonia smiles faintly at Anita as Anita makes way for Glory to pass with the tray of soup in her hands. Anita walks into the kitchen without uttering any words to her mother, but her face holds a great sorrow that her mom understands better."Anita," Mrs. Tonia slowly calls her name."What is it, mom?" Anita asks as she walks beside her mother."I want you to know that your father really loves you, like the rest of your siblings, and isn't against your success," Mrs. Tonia replies, holding Anita's hand in hers."Hmph," Anita sighs. "I know, mom, but I don't care about that. If Dad likes me, fine; if he doesn't, fine. I will always see him as my father, and that's all.""Anita," Mrs. Tonia begins."Mom, where's the fufu?!" Flora steps into the kitchen and interrupts them. She looks at Anita and walks to the kitchen cabinet to meet their mother."Mom, why are you holding her hands and talking to her? Are you begging her for something?" Flora asks again, crossing her arms over her che
Mrs. Tonia didn't say anything after Flora exited the room. She sighed and walked up to sit beside Anita on the bed, while Favour and Esther also exited the room."You shouldn't be so harsh with your sister. Fighting with her wasn't necessary," Mrs. Tonia said to Anita as she sat beside her on the bed."I know, mom, but they keep disrespecting me too much, and it's getting out of hand," Anita replied."It's okay. I understand, but don't change yourself because of them. Keep being my sweet and calm daughter," Mrs. Tonia advised Anita."Okay, mom," Anita sighed as she stared at her mother, while Glory walked up to sit on the bed too."I've got to go now and meet your father. Glory, go now, pack your bags, and come join Anita here," Mrs. Tonia said."Okay, mom," Glory replied. She stood up from the bed and walked out of the room to the one she shared with Lisa. Flora was already there, arranging her clothes into the wardrobe, but she didn't say a word to Glory, who stepped in and carried
Anita couldn't say anything after their mother left them to be with their father. She sighed and stared back at Flora, who seemed worried, as they walked back to sit on the couch."What do you think is the problem?" Esther asked Flora, but Flora shook her head and replied, "I don't know, but I am worried it's something serious."They sat back on the couch, waiting for their father or mother to step out and talk to them. Anita sighed and finally walked back to her room, not knowing what the problem was. She believed her mother would let them know, even if her father didn't want to, as she saw her father was already dressed to leave for work before receiving whatever news made him devastated. She prayed silently in her heart, "Let it not be that my father has lost his job."Anita shook her head and walked back into her room, feeling that her father's scream had something to do with his office work. She sat on her bed and picked up her phone to type her letter of application to the Benson
Liam walked into his office and took his seat in his executive chair, swirling it sideways and staring around his office. He smiled and rolled up his sleeves to start his new day at the office, leaning forward to his desk and switching on his computer to check the company's records. He waited for the computer to finish booting.Liam tick-tocked the time as he waited for the computer to boot up. Just then, his secretary knocked, and he responded, "Come in."Margret walked into his office, holding a file, and smiled faintly at him, staring downward a little before stopping in front of his desk."Yes... What's your name again?" Liam asked her as he looked up at her pretty face."Margret Jonathan," she said, still smiling at him."Okay, Miss Margret, what do you want, or what can I help you with?" Liam asked her."Sir, Mr. John Patrick brought this file this morning and said I should hand it over to you," Margret replied, staring at him."Okay, drop it here." Liam pointed to the space on h
"Hello, boss," Margret quickly picked up the office line and received the call."Come into my office right away," Liam responded. Margret gulped, quickly stood up from her seat, and dropped the phone. She saw Bambam smiling at her as she prepared to attend to a client sitting in front of her. Some clients stepped into Margret's office to see her, but she immediately directed them to other staff on the third floor, knowing the new boss didn't like to be kept waiting. Margret walked towards Liam's office door, knocked gently, and heard his cold response, "Come in."Margret gulped as she opened his office door and walked in."What took you so long to respond to my call?" Liam asked, continuing to type on his computer without looking away from the monitor."I'm sorry, boss, I arrived late from lunch," Margret replied. Liam paused his typing and looked up at her."Do you want to be fired?" he asked."No, boss," Margret responded nervously, fumbling with her fingers as her palms became sweat
Temisa is in her father's mansion, a standard duplex in a government-owned estate that her father bought as a new house."Father, have you submitted my CV and letter of application to the new boss?" Temisa asked as her father stepped into the living room. She sat on the long couch, filing and brushing her long nails.Mr. John stared at his daughter. Instead of standing up and welcoming him, she sat comfortably on the couch, filing her nails and asking him questions as if he were her errand boy."Temisa, you're quite unbelievable; not even a welcome greeting for your father?" Mr. John asked as he dropped his briefcase on the center table and loosened his necktie."I am sorry, father. Good evening, father. Welcome home," Temisa said, dropping her leg from the couch where it had been resting."Where's your mother?" Mr. John asked."She went to the market to refill the house with food.""And your elder brother?""Father, I'm not their keeper, and I don't know where Martin went either," Tem
"Mom, I cannot work with them if that's what their new boss now wants from them," Temisa refuted as she stood up from the couch. She had been sitting with her mother when Felicia left with the car key to offload the car's boot."I can understand you, Temisa, but know that your father went through the stress to get your application submitted to their boss. It will be very insulting to your father if, after their new boss approves you, you fail to resume with them. Remember, your results aren't even the best, and yet they want you to work with them," Mrs. Bianca said."But mother..." Temisa was lost for words as she stared at her mother, a beautiful, full-figured black woman."Just think about it, Temisa, and be easy on yourself. You're lucky your father is doing all this to get you to the top among your peers. He told me personally that the CEO's father wants you to be engaged with his son, and the only way you can be engaged with his son is by getting closer to him and building a bond
In the kitchen, Felicia was busy dishing out the delicious Oha soup she had prepared. She was serving it on smaller soup plates when she heard the kitchen door click open. Felicia turned to see who it was, and seeing Martin, she quickly looked away, wondering what he wanted in the kitchen.Martin stared at her back and down to her slim, curvy waist. He liked her, and even though he had a girlfriend, he wasn't in love with her as much as he loved Felicia. He knew he was supposed to see Felicia as his sister, but they weren't related by blood, and he didn't even know how to approach Felicia and tell her about his true feelings. Whenever he wanted to discuss his feelings with her, he felt stuck, unable to get the words out.He had watched her grow and had always admired her, knowing his mother liked her too. So he stood by the kitchen door, scratching his head confusedly as he thought about Felicia. He wanted her badly, but she was still considered his sister, and he hated to admit they w
Liam doesn't say anything as he stands watching the two friends reunite and forgive each other. They finally stand up, and Temisa walks over to see the twin babies in their little baby bed in the living room."Wow, they look so much like Liam, but my baby resembles me more than Alfred," Temisa says, while Anita only smiles at her."It's all good, girlfriend. I wish you both a happy married life, and I will be your bridesmaid on your wedding day," Temisa proposes, and Anita shakes her head."Flora already filled that position. You will only join the train.""Okay, dear. I have to be on my way now. You know I just darted out from the house as soon as Alfred told me about your babies and that you're here with Liam. Take good care of yourself, girlfriend, as you look slim," Temisa says, while Anita nods to her."I will. Let me escort you," Anita feels all the previous heaviness in her heart disappear, and she walks out of the mansion with Temisa. They walk to the garage where Temisa's car
Mrs. Tonia quickly greets Mrs. Juliet, "Good evening, ma'am.""Yes, welcome. Let's go in first," Mrs. Juliet ushers them into her living room. Just then, Mr. Taiye walks in too and sees the visitors, noticing Liam carefully carrying a baby in his arms. He recognizes the familiar lady as his son's secretary and immediately knows the babies are the result of the encounter they had in Liam's office."Good evening, Father," Liam happily greets his father. Mr. Taiye nods to all their greetings, while Anita nervously stares downward, feeling uncomfortable, remembering Mr. Taiye had warned her to stay clear of his son and never show her face in his company again."Mother, here are your grandkids," Liam walks over to meet his mother, who is sitting on the living room couch. He carefully places the baby boy in her arms, and Mrs. Juliet is still in shock as Liam never told her his secretary was pregnant or that he was bringing his babies home.Mr. Taiye is the most confused as he remembers he w
"Are you married?" Liam finally asks, sounding hurt. Anita shakes her head and replies, "No.""Then how come the babies?" Liam asks as he finally saunters over to meet her. He has missed her so much, and he doesn't look himself because of her."Anita," Liam finally approaches her, and she turns to face him, and he sees she's crying."I'm sorry," Anita cries, and Liam crosses the thin line between them and hugs her warmly."It's okay. I've missed you. I do love you," Liam comforts her in a hug, hoping whoever got her pregnant or married her doesn't step in and catch him hugging his wife.Anita wants to pull away from Liam as she inhales his cologne, realizing she's crying into his chest, but Liam hugs her tighter and raises her chin to face him."Don't you miss me?" he asks, and Anita sniffs."I do," she replies."And you don't want to kiss me or welcome me?"Anita finally raises her head properly and looks up at Liam's face.He looks sick too, so unlike him, and his beard is overgrown
Anita doesn't say anything as she watches her mother dress up in a green gown while she breastfeeds her little daughter, who sucks a lot, wanting to drain the remaining energy she has left."I have to go out now and buy everything we will need to eat tonight. There's no food in the kitchen, and I don't want to disturb Mama and her in-law.""Okay, Mom."Anita watches her mother walk out of the room. She carefully places her little girl down and walks to her phone to see all the text messages Liam sent to her. Her heartbeat increases as she unlocks her phone screen. She sees a lot of texts from him and love emojis and she smiles, staggering backward to sit on her bed to read his texts."What happened to you? Your mom said you got discharged from the hospital. Are you alright now? Not to worry, I will be coming down to your village to see you. But why did you shut us all out? I have really missed you. Honestly, I cannot stop thinking about the love we made, and I'm glad your mom finally
Mrs. Tonia pulls away from the mother-to-daughter hug and stares at Anita's face."It's okay, stop crying. Why did you run away, and who did you sleep with?" Mrs. Tonia questions as she walks to look at her grandkids. She stares at the two cute babies who are also awake and staring at her. She gasps in surprise as she isn't mistaken—the babies look so much like Liam, the CEO of Benson Group. She stares back at Anita, who’s also looking at her, and then back at the twin babies in their baby bed."Anita, who got you pregnant?" Mrs. Tonia asks again while Alice finally walks over to hold her hand."We can discuss this at home. Let it rest while we leave the hospital first."Mrs. Tonia sighs and looks from Alice to Anita and back to her grandbabies. They're so cute and fair, and now she knows why the CEO has kept on asking her about Anita. So he's the one that got her daughter pregnant and slept with Anita the very day he delayed her at work and made her return home late.Mrs. Tonia tries
Anita wakes up that evening with a light headache. She sits up in her bed and eats the dinner Alice brought for her from home."How are you feeling now? You need to breastfeed your babies and not starve them," Alice says. Anita finally looks at them as her eyes clear, and seeing one of them crying, Alice speaks to her."She's a girl, while the calm one here is a boy." Alice hands over the baby girl to Anita, who stares at her beautiful daughter's face. Her baby girl looks so much like Liam; even though she's very fair like her, her baby's short curly hair and round cute face resemble Liam so much. Anita's heart skips a beat as she keeps staring at her baby instead of breastfeeding her."Why are you still staring at her? Give her your breast milk" Alice finally yells at Anita, snapping her out of her daze. Anita opens up her shirt and breastfeeds her baby. The little girl in her arms stops crying after a while as she sucks on her breast. As if the second baby is aware, he resumes cryin
"I know," Liam replies and smiles back."But I still miss Anita and want to see her account," he says."Tell me the truth, boss. Do you just miss Anita, or are you in love with her and have a crush on her?" Temisa asks, and she sees Liam smile, which already answers her question."Just send me Anita's profile name. Let me search for her first.""Okay, I will," Temisa replies as she sits up properly."What about Alfred?" Liam finally asks her as he sees her sit up."He's not yet home. You know he runs the hotels and club too, cheating on me," Temisa pouts."He's not. He complains about you starving him," Liam tells her, and Temisa gasps."He said that? I know Alfred is so shameless," Temisa replies, and just then Alfred returns and walks into their room, as they both use one room together. Even though the room was his before she moved into his family house. His mother had insisted they must share a room together as a couple, and he clearly heard her call him a shameless man."Who are y
The line goes still for a while."Which sister are you talking about?" Barrister Jude asks."Oh, I just remembered I have her number, as her husband's case is with me. Mrs. Tonia, of course. Don't you know your sister again?" Mr. Collins questions."Oh, you mean her daughter is in the village? Which one?""I don't know her name yet, but she's white and very fair. She just gave birth to twins, making your sister a grandmother now.""Oh! You mean Anita?" Barrister Jude asks."Is that her name? Well, I don't know. I'm just seeing her for the first time now. Let me contact your sister then. I forgot I recently got her number due to her husband's case."Mr. Collins quickly ends the call, not giving Barrister Jude any more chances to question him. He cannot believe the silly man didn't want to help his in-law because of some past silly stories. He had to pity Mrs. Tonia and helped her case as he used to admire her when she hadn't married Mr. Joshua."Hello," Mr. Collins stands outside the h
Liam stares downward, not wanting to meet Mrs. Tonia's angry gaze, as he suspects she knows about the night he made love to Anita, but probably doesn't know who exactly slept with her.Was that why Anita left? What's really going on? he wonders."Actually, ma'am, I heard from her friend that she's going through a lot, and I don't know if I can help, but perhaps that will make her return.""Help with what? Just leave!" Mrs. Tonia shuts her door on Liam, not giving him a chance to speak.Did Anita's boss force himself on her? Mrs. Tonia wonders as she walks back to her parlor.Staring at the man, she sees him as a calm person with good moral upbringing, but is he the one that slept with her daughter and also bit and sucked on Anita's neck?If only Anita had told her the truth before she left, she wouldn't be rude to him, but she cannot help it. She behaves rudely because she misses her daughter so much.Liam leaves the building and walks back to his car.He knows her mother suspects him
