Suddenly, Alex found himself in a dark room. He felt trapped because he had no clue where he was, how he got there, or where to head towards to leave the darkness. Still wondering all these, he saw a dim of light from afar, but the dim got brighter later on making it seem like it emanated from his front initially.
He heard a voice echoes,"your people await you" several times, while still blinking his eyes from the glittering light which took him abacked because he didn't noticed that someone accompanied the light.
Then, he tried to take a look at the person to examine the person's appearances notwithstanding the light. He then concluded that the person was an old woman due to her conspicuous shaky voice, but after he managed to take an in-depth look at her, he noticed that she wore a dirty white cloth; her hair and fingers were so dirty that one would think she used her hand to till a soil, which attested his initial observation. However, he couldn't see her face because her dirty hair covered it.
"Who are you and how did I get here?" He asked the woman unconsciously.
"Your people await you". She replied to his surprise, because he wasn't expecting her to reply.
He looked back to see if the statement was made to another person.
After verifying they were only the one still present at the spot, he yelled, "which people, what the hell are you talking about?!"
He thought that his yelling would prompt her to give him a detailed reply, instead, she and the light faded away in seconds.
After noticing that he was the only one left in what he referred to as 'a dark room', he yelled" hello, can someone hear me?" with the hope of getting a response which he didn't.
He woke up sweating profusely and somehow glad it was all a dream. Although, he had been having the same dream recently, but it felt real this time. In the recent ones he had, he couldn't see neither the old woman's face nor did she say anything.
Realising the fan in the room was still working and he was only on underpant, he wondered why he was sweating at that rate because his bed was soaked with his sweat. He stood up from the bed, walked towards the wall to switch on the light and laid back on it . Still wondering why he had been having the same dream recently, he thought if it denoted a meaning because he wasn't the type that believed in dreams. Nature took over him while still on his thoughts.
The consistent banging on his door woke him up. He hesitantly picked his phone that was on a blue plastic table behind his bed. He switched it on to check the time.
"Oh fuck!" he screamed, on realising it was already some minutes past seven.
"Is today a weekend or is your school on holiday?" His mother asked him sarcastically.
He didn't bother to answer her because he was not in a good mood; if he was in a good mood, his reply would have been "oh! How did you know? I'm sorry for not letting you know",
Instead, he stood up, walked to the bathroom, quickly brushed his teeth and took his bath. He didn't use up to three minutes taking his bath and brushing his teeth which was very unusual of him. In a good mood, he would have spent at least fifteen minutes doing all these before coming out of the bathroom. He dried himself up within some seconds, stood in front of a long-squared mirror which was hung in a corner around the room. He would have spent a lot of time appreciating his well-built physique while staring at the mirror if he was in a good mood, because he wasn't, he quickly applied lotion on his body, wore his school uniform and his shoe, carried his backpack and left the room.
"Did you sleep late because you were busy chatting with someone?" His mother asked him from the kitchen immediately he stepped out from his room.
"No, I wasn't", he muttered.
"Good morning dad, good morning mum", he greeted his parents and walked towards the dining table simultaneously. However, only his dad replied, his mother asked him another question instead.
"So tell me, what's the girl's name?",she asked him, but his father cut in before he could reply.
"Will you stop asking the young man these silly questions and serve him his breakfast already?!"
"Please don't interfere with our discussion because you can't understand", his mum replied jokingly.
"Can't you see he's late for school for God's sake?!" His father retorted.
She then brought out some loaves of bread and a cup of tea in a ceramic tray from the kitchen and placed it in front of Alex who was impatiently waiting to be served.
"Moreover, what can't I understand?", his father asked his mum calmly because he was surprised by her statement.
"You don't need to bother yourself, just forget about it because you can't understand." She replied while laughing hysterically.
"What and why can't I understand exactly?!" he replied fumingly.
"Well, since you insisted on knowing why I said that, you can't know him more than I do. He came out from my womb so you can't and won't know him than I do."
His father hissed on hearing this and continued reading the morning news from his phone while his mother returned to the kitchen.
When Alex noticed everywhere was already quiet, he then announced suddenly,"I had the same dream overnight again." Not looking at them to see their reactions.
"And it's getting scarier everytime I dream about it." He continued, after none of them replied him some seconds after he uttered that statement.
He stood up abruptly from the chair he was sitting on in the dining room because he expected a reply from them which they didn't. Then, he carried his backpack which was beside the chair and mumbled, "I'm off to school, goodbye."
His mother shouted from the kitchen as if he was already outside, "won't you comb your hair?!"
He decided to play dumb and ignore her because he was really angry but was just trying to keep his cool regardless. He wasn't in the mood to dress smart and one could easily notice that he wasn't in a good mood due to his unsmart dressing and unkempt appearance which was very unusual of him.
"Have a wonderful day, my son." His father s a
said, before he stepped out of the house.
"I wish", he mumbled because he was pessimistic about the day.
Leaving his house, he ran to his classmate and friend's house - Brian. His house and Brian's are just some few minutes away from each other, and they have been going to school together ever since Alex and his family relocated from the States. He halted from running to catch up his breath on getting to the front of Brian's house because he ran out of breath from running in haste. Luckily, he met Brian's mum - Mrs Smith, who was about to enter her freshly washed red Venza car which was parked on their driveway. She was surprised to see him that way. "Good morning ma." He greeted her, realising Mrs Smith's weird look. "Good morning, Alex. Hope everything is okay with you?" She replied. "Yes, I am." He answered, still knee bent trying to catch up his breath. "Is Brian still at home?" He asked her. "No, he left already. I thought something was odd between you two because you did not pick up his calls when he called you earlier to remind you that he was still waiting for you. I hope e
He walked reluctantly towards him as he wondered. All the students were scared of him because he was really skilled in beating students. Some teachers even call him to beat students whom they are supposed to sometimes."Good morning, sir." Alex murmured and bowed his head as he greeted him."What happened?" He asked abruptly."Sir?" Alex tried to feign ignorance like he did not know what he was asking about. "Why are you late to school?" He asked calmly." The thing is... I... I..." He stuttered as he scratched his hair trying to find the best way to reply him, but Mr Akeem cut in. " My friend, is it going to take you forever to answer my question?!" He asked, raising his voice. " I was not feeling okay, that was why I came late." Alex replied. "But you should have stayed at home. You know that one's health is very important." He said. " I came because I did not want to miss your test." Alex retorted. "That's very good of you. That would be all if you had missed it. Anyway, you
His heart was beating wildly, and he felt as though a devil had been let loose inside of him. At that point, the pace felt slow, and Alex was unable to control his urge. Before the bus could hit Charlotte, he sprinted out to where she was and forcefully shoved her, causing both of them to slide to the opposite side of the road.Alex felt relieved, shocked, and uneasy at the same time. They both felt uncomfortable because of how similar their situation was to two people of opposing genders bumping into one another. After a few awkward seconds of staring at one other, Alex got to his feet.People, including Brian, had crowded around them, before one of them could speak or before Charlotte could rise up. While Charlotte was being grilled by onlookers, Alex remained puzzledly standing. You nearly implicated someone due to your negligence.""Why use earphones while crossing a street?" People, particularly the market women, questioned her about such things."Do you realize that due of your
"You don't have to pretend to be unaware or dispute it. The video has been trending, across all social media platforms since yesterday. I suppose you are unaware, because you have not been online since the incident happened." His father said. He then realised that his father, and virtually everyone might have been aware of what had transpired."Did you also know about it, Mum?" He asked, turning to face his mother. His mother didn't look at him as she nodded in affirmation."How did you do that, by the way? Like, it's incredibly unexpected and enigmatic." His father said. "I don't know. I assume I was just meant to save her." He muttered , hoping that his father would end the conversation."Well, be careful next time. Your safety should be your priority before any other's." His mother warned.Okay ma," he replied. He could not bear it anymore and left the kitchen."Mum, I'm sorry to leave you with this cooking, I need to do something in my room." He told his mother, as he headed
They arrived at the school's grounds early, where they only met a few kids. They entered their classroom but saw only a few people. Charlotte was not there at that time. They greeted their mates present, and walked to their seats. "Do you think she will come today?" Brian whispered to Alex."Maybe so, maybe not," he replied bluntly, as they made their way to their seats. The children present were alerted by the school bell that for the commencement of the assembly had. Most of the students sprinted to the gathering area.Alex and Brian ran into Charlotte, while going down the stairs. She nearly collided with Alex as she was hurrying to their class in order to make it to the assembly ground on time. She took a step back to avoid a collision. Alex and Brian cleared a space for her in the staircase, as it could not be possible to occupy more than three people walking freely. She murmured, "Thank you" as she sprinted to their class, still panting heavily and avoiding Alex's eyes. As t
Alex finally outperformed Charlotte in Mathematics for the first time , including all subjects, making him the class' top student for while Charlotte finished in second place for the third time in Alex's three school terms. Charlotte had been the one getting the first position, before Alex's admission into the school. He and Charlotte had gotten along and became friends, after the incident happened. They occasionally talk on WhatsApp about random topics, to Alex's surprise, because he never imagined their relationship would develop to such a degree.A few days after Alex celebrated his eighteenth birthday, he was eating on the dining table with his parents."In two days, we will be leaving for a vacation." His father abruptly announced. Alex was not sure who the statement was intended for. He turned to look at his mother and father, but his father was facing down while his mother continued to devour her food respectively, so he decided to act dumb. "I hope you heard what I said ?"
Alex was awakened by constant knocks on his bedroom door."I'm awake already." he cried, annoyed that he was woken up, when he slept just some hours ago. He had the spooky dream, which he has been having since some months ago and was afraid of sleeping back when he woke up from the dream, because he feared that he would have the same dream again, if he slept. “Oh!” he yelled, slamming the bed in frustration."Are you good?" his mother asked him, from the room she shared with his father. "Yes, I am," he calmly replied. He checked the time on the wall clock in his room and took out his phone that was on the table, to verify if the time on the wall clock was correct, or if it was stuck. To his surprise, he found the time on both his wall clock and his phone accurate. "Why am I woken up at this hour? It's just past 6am. " He wondered. He reluctantly got up from his bed, straightened his sheets and went into the bathroom. He brushed his teeth and bathed in the bathroom."I think the p
Alex saw himself running in a pitch-black environment, similar to his previous dreams. He was pacing aimlessly and perspiring a lot, due to the terrifying sight he saw.He stopped running, after he thought that his pursuer had dissipated and stopped chasing him. "That was extremely close." He said, heavily panting. He was still trying to catch up his breath, when he heard a swift footstep coming from where he was racing from. His heart beat faster than it was before, so, he turned to face the direction in which the pursuit was coming from and started to move backwards. He stopped moving after he stopped hearing the footsteps, and pondered why it stopped. He thought it had ceased pursuing him, and sighed in relief. He noticed someone was behind him due to the shadow behind his, and slowly turned back to see what it was. He winced as soon as he recognized the appearance he had been running from. He attempted to move back, but tripped, as it got closer to him.He has never witnessed
"Surprisingly, I enjoyed my short stay in this village, even though it was just a few days." Brian said, as he and Alex were packing their clothes into their travel bags."Really?!" Alex smiled."Yes, man. It's surprising for you to hear me say that, right?" Brain chuckled."Yeah." Alex said."What about you?" Brain asked."About what?" He was clueless."Did you enjoy your stay here or not, dummy?" He clarified."Oh – that. Like I said two days ago, when the old man told me that I would be king in the future, I did. I enjoyed my stay here. At first, it felt like I was living in hell, but I gradually enjoyed it. I didn't even feel reluctant to leave America when we wanted to relocate to this country, the way I'm feeling now." He explained."What?" Alex was prompted to ask because Brian chuckled after he uttered the statement."Look at you talking about enjoying your little adventure here when you were ranting and crying about leaving this place because you couldn't endure to live here.
Alex sat in front of the house with Brian as he waited for the old man's arrival."What do you think the chiefs wanted to discuss with the Baba Agba?" He asked Brian, who was busy on his phone."Why are you getting yourself worried about it? There's nothing to worry about. I know their discussion is over a trivial issue." He assured me."Check this babe out. She's beautiful, right?" He placed his phone in front of Alex to see."Guy, I'm not in the mood for that." Alex didn't look at the phone's screen."I don't know why you are anxious. Just chillax."Alex immediately rose from the seat as he saw the old man from afar."Welcome, Baba Agba. How was the meeting? What did the chief discuss with you?" He lowered his head."It was okay. We just had a little discussion. Are your parents and Vivian inside?" He inquired as they walked towards the house."Yes.""Okay, stay outside with your friend for now. I need to have a discussion with you, but you will be called upon when your attention is
"Is this celebration really important this way for everyone to be gathered there?" He wondered. He was surprised to see a lot of people gathered and rejoicing at the spot, leaving their work just for a mere celebration. Some that saw Alex and the old man as they approached, fidgeted, and they called others attention to look at Alex as he approached. They were shocked, especially by Alex' outfit. They looked at them glaringly while muttering some words, their jaws dropping.Their gaze was fixed on them as they struggled to walk to the center of the spot, the center of attraction where the king, his chiefs, and other royal members were seated. The drummers, who had been beating the drums for almost an hour, abruptly stopped on seeing them, making everything quiet like a graveyard for a few seconds. The king stood up from his royal seat, fuming as he saw them. His face was reddened, and his brows furrowed."Baba Fakunle! What are you doing here? What is the meaning of this?" He pointed
On the next day, the day of the clash between the king and Alex, the old man woke Alex up before the sun rose while the night was still chilly before roosters crowed."I thought we were done with fortifications. Why are we headed to the shrine?" Alex yawned, still rubbing his eyes, as they walked to the shrine."Fortification is not complete until you get to the battle ground." The old man replied as Alex walked behind him. They had the ritual procedure, but it was more intense than before. The old man prayed on Alex's behalf and appeased the gods to make him triumph in the battle."I didn't know when you left; I was worried when I woke up and couldn't find you until your sister told me you and the old man were in the shrine." Brian said as Alex walked into the room. "How would you know when you are a heavy sleeper?" Alex scoffed."That's funny, coming from a person who snores." He retorted."You call me a snorer? You must be joking." Alex chuckled."Who should be called a snorer bet
Alex struggled to get any sleep since he was anxious about his parents' arrival, particularly the surprise the both of them told him.He was up all night thinking about what the surprise might be, but he could not think of anything."If only I could just see the future, especially the outcome of the clash tomorrow between the king and I, at least I would be rest assured. The anxiety is killing me." His body was positioned such that his head and eyes were oriented upward toward the coffered ceiling, which had rectangular panels surrounded by wooden beams, while he lay flat on his bed and rested his head on his hands. The sudden thought diminished his anticipation and made him less excited about his parents' coming. His door busted open suddenly, which made him flinch and startled, and as a result, he stood up instantly due to the reflective response. "Who will it be if not the old man? I wonder why he ignores such elementary manners as knocking." He wondered, because adults he had bee
The past few days of preparation for the war between the king and Alex have been stressful and tiring for him. The old man has also been demanding, adding to the stress. It seemed like the world was against him, and he could not shoulder the task bestowed upon him anymore. As a result, he felt like giving up and just going back to living and enjoying his normal life before the whole destiny thing happened."Alex?" Despite Vivian's whispering, he could hear her clearly. "Yeah?" He quickly cleaned the little tears off his face so she wouldn't notice. He chose to tear down and sob in the darkness because it was the only place he found comfortable to let his pains out."Alex, why are you sitting here, all alone in the darkness?" She moved closer to him.He kept silent instead."I called your phone repeatedly to ask about your whereabouts, until I realised that you left it in your room. What the hell?! Why are you seated on the bare floor?" She was surprised to see him sitting on the floo
"Are they supposed to let us go like that after our display?" Alex asked, as they made their way home."No," he replied with a smile and continued, "just like one of the chiefs said, the king is the second in command and authority after the gods, and no one dares to confront him no matter what he does..." "But I did, because he is not deserving of the title of king." He was expecting Alex to question him about why he had disrespected and confronted him, but since he didn't, he had to explain it. They walked in silence to the house afterwards, occasionally breaking it when the old man responded to people's greetings. Vivian was seated on the bench where they were seated before the guards came earlier, waiting for their arrival. As soon as she saw them approaching, she stood up and moved in their direction."Don't tell me you've been sitting here all this while." The old man said, before Vivian could say anything. "I was really scared, thinking something terrible would happen at th
"Why does the king want to see him all of a sudden? What does the guard mean by him disrespecting the king?" Alex wondered as he followed the old man to the palace. He didn't want to ask him the reason for the king's call because the old man was fuming.Alex found it difficult to keep up with him despite the fact that he was old enough to be his grandfather, which made him question how he was still in shape at his age. Many people greeted him as he passed by, which made him wonder why people still respected him despite his exile, because he believed that exile attracted disrespect from others. His heart beat rapidly in eagerness as he saw a house ahead of them. He concluded that it was the palace to which they were headed because a crown was inscribed on its gate."Whom do you seek?" The guard questioned."If not the king, then who should I be here to see? Is it you? The guards exchanged startled looks with one another."Are you simply going to remain still and refuse to carry out you
Alex woke up in the afternoon after the fortification in pain from the cuts. He groaned as he got up reluctantly and walked to the bathroom to shower while rubbing his migraine-ridden head. The bathroom does not have a standing shower but only a tap that runs water into buckets. He strained to lean down and use the bowl from the water-filled bucket to pour water on his body. He avoided scrubbing his back and his wrist, which had cuts from the fortification, with the sponge he had brought along from the city, because of what the old man applied to them after the fortification. "This will fasten the healing process." The old man had said, after he applied a substance that seemed like a mixture of a leaf and other things to the cuts, before they went to bed. He didn't spend up to three minutes in the bathroom, which was unusual of him because he was in pain. "2:45!" He exclaimed as he checked the time on his phone after he had dried himself up. "Maybe the painkiller I used before I
