They arrived at the school's grounds early, where they only met a few kids.

They entered their classroom but saw only a few people. Charlotte was not there at that time.

They greeted their mates present, and walked to their seats.

"Do you think she will come today?" Brian whispered to Alex.

"Maybe so, maybe not," he replied bluntly, as they made their way to their seats.

The children present were alerted by the school bell that for the commencement of the assembly had. Most of the students sprinted to the gathering area.

Alex and Brian ran into Charlotte, while going down the stairs. She nearly collided with Alex as she was hurrying to their class in order to make it to the assembly ground on time.

She took a step back to avoid a collision. Alex and Brian cleared a space for her in the staircase, as it could not be possible to occupy more than three people walking freely.

She murmured, "Thank you" as she sprinted to their class, still panting heavily and avoiding Alex's eyes.

As the school's head boy, which he was, Alex and Brian made their way to the assembly ground , but this time, they moved swiftly so that Alex could organize the assembly.

"At least she spoke to us today." Brian remarked.

Yes, all the best for her." Alex grudgingly replied.

"Oh! You probably expected her to thank you, for what happened yesterday, right?." He asked him and patted him on the shoulder while laughing.

"Maybe."Alex replied sharply, walking more quickly than Brian, while Brian tried to step up his pace.

He wondered why he wished, she thanked him for saving her the previous day.

"Why would I expect a person who has not spoken to me in over a year, to express gratitude for saving her life? LOL. Whatever." He considered.

"Will you please wait for me? Brian questioned him, as he ran to meet him.

One of the prefects who was in charge of leading the assembly that day had already started, when they got to the assembly ground

Charlotte joined the assembly before they could finish its normal routine. She stood by the left of the prefect-in-charge, while Alex stood opposite.

The National Anthem and Pledge were said after the regular recitations on the assembly ground, and the principal moved from where he and the other teachers were standing to where the students were.

Charlotte's heart beat faster as he walked over to where they were standing. She wondered if he had already heard of what happened the previous day.

"Good morning, my world class excellent students." He shouted.

"Good morning, sir." The students replied.

The principal cleared his throat, before he continued speaking.

"Well, I do not have much to say today. All I have for you all is just a piece of advice. Whenever, you are walking on the road, or in  public places, try not to use an earpiece, a headphone, or an airpod, because you won't hear or notice if any unforseen incident happens."

He paused to make sure everyone was listening carefully to what he was saying.

Charlotte bowed her head in shame, because she knew that the principal was indirectly refering to her. She hoped that he would stop at that moment, so, most people won't know whom the speech was directed at.

"We could have lost one of us yesterday due to the person's reckless act, if she was not saved by her mates. Please, let every one of us comply to this advice for our safety. Honestly, I see no reason why a person would use such while walking on the road, just because they want to listen to music, which they could, at their home." He said, furiously.

He paused again, before he concluded his speech. Charlotte felt all eyes was on her, while the principal was speaking, although, she was still in that position.

"That will be all for today. I wish you success in your forthcoming examinations."

Charlotte was very happy, as she heard the principal ended the speech. It was what she had hoped for, because she knew that some students are unaware of who the principal was referring to.

Everyone walked towards their classes as he ended his speech.

The three prefects that conducted the assembly, walked to their class, after all the students had marched to their respective classes.

Alex was ahead of Charlotte and the other two prefects, but heard a footstep approaching him.

Someone tapped him on his back, as the footstep was just some feet away from him.

"Alex, thank you for yesterday." Charlotte thanked him while she bowed her head.

"Oh... Yeah... You're welcome." He finally replied, as he tried to find the right reply, because he did not expect her, to heartily thank him.

"I won't tell you to stop using an earpiece or whatever when walking on the road, because I also do that sometimes, but just be careful of your environment." He finally composed himself and adviced her.

"Yes sir, I will. Thank you very much, once again." She thanked him again, but smiled as he said it.

"You're wel-" A teacher called Charlotte from one of the classes, before Alex could finish talking.

"Wow! That was not bad." He thought and smiled.

That was the first time they had a detailed conversation. Ever since Alex became a student of the school, they do not usually greet each other, unless their eyes contact each other.

The enmity between them started when Alex became the favourite student of the school. Charlotte was the favorite, before Alex' admission to the school. She represented the school in all competitions, except sport competitions until Alex became a student of the school.

She became the school's second choice in academic competitions, ever since Alex performed excellently well than she did in the first examination he did in the school.

That is the reason why they do not talk to each other, because she was not ready to accept being a subordinate to him, hence, decided to stay away from him, until that moment.

Alex was awakened by constant knocks on his bedroom door."I'm awake already." he cried, annoyed that he was woken up, when he slept just some hours ago. He had the spooky dream, which he has been having since some months ago and was afraid of sleeping back when he woke up from the dream, because he feared that he would have the same dream again, if he slept. “Oh!” he yelled, slamming the bed in frustration."Are you good?" his mother asked him, from the room she shared with his father. "Yes, I am," he calmly replied. He checked the time on the wall clock in his room and took out his phone that was on the table, to verify if the time on the wall clock was correct, or if it was stuck. To his surprise, he found the time on both his wall clock and his phone accurate. "Why am I woken up at this hour? It's just past 6am. " He wondered. He reluctantly got up from his bed, straightened his sheets and went into the bathroom. He brushed his teeth and bathed in the bathroom."I think the p

"That was extremely close." He said, heavily panting. He was still trying to catch up his breath, when he heard a swift footstep coming from where he was racing from. His heart beat faster than it was before, so, he turned to face the direction in which the pursuit was coming from and started to move backwards. He stopped moving after he stopped hearing the footsteps, and pondered why it stopped. He thought it had ceased pursuing him, and sighed in relief. He noticed someone was behind him due to the shadow behind his, and slowly turned back to see what it was. He winced as soon as he recognized the appearance he had been running from. He attempted to move back, but tripped, as it got closer to him.He has never witnessed

His father persisted in fending off the steering until it bashed a tree.Their head twitched forward, as the car slammed into the tree . Their skull would have collided with anything inside the car, if the seat belts had not stopped them. Smoke erupted from the car's hood, as it struck the tree. "Is everyone all right?" The ride to the rest of the journey, was so silent. Alex was just busy observing the fascinating places they passed. The buildings and places he admired as they traveled changed as they continued their journey. He took pictures of the buildings and places he admired with his phone."Why is there still a mud house in this century?" He wondered, as they drove past a house built with mud with a thatched roof.He saw similar buildings like that, and some worse ones compared to them as they drove-by.He wondered, if his story would be like that of one of his schoolmates who went to spend a Christmas holiday in his village.According to the boy, it was the first time he visited his family members, along with his immediate family, in their village. He said that they planned to spend over a week for the Christmas and New Year holidays in their village, but only spent three days due to the barbaric ways of living in the village. He said that the only source of water in the village, was a strea

"How am I going to live and cope in this house? Is it even qualified to be referred to as a house? I mean, how the heck am I going to live under a thatched roof, for God's sake?!" These thoughts ran through his head, as he alighted from the car to join others. "But I heard, he owns a new house now. He built a new building some years ago." His father asked the driver. "Yes, that's true. The building is at the rear of this hut. You'll just pass through the narrow path beside the building." The driver pointed at a small, narrow road beside the hut. "He only does his things in this building." He added. "Which things does he do? And who is he?" Alex asked out of curiosity, but his father intervened before the driver said anything. "That's okay. Have you ever been told that you talk too much, young man? ." Alex' father remarked. "Come on, get these bags out of the booth." He commanded Alex. The old man led him and his parents to the house so they could have their bath and get ready. "I know you have a lot of questions to ask, a lot of mysteries to grasp, but first have your bath and come to join us at the dinning to eat a sumptuous, delectable meal." The old man said, as he ushered Alex into the room. Alex only nodded. "Although this room might seem abandanoned and vacant for long, you don't need to feel discomfort staying in this room, because it was properly cleaned when I got notified that you'll be coming from the city." The old man said. After he left, Alex took some minutes to observe the room. The room had undoubtedly been empty for some time based on the fragrant odor. Being used to sleeping on the regular bed in his room, the bed was a medium-square size without a bed base, which he knew would hurt his back when he lied on it. Just like the sitting room, the room was also painted in white. "Who the fuck uses carpet in this day and age?" He said, as he fe

Alex smiled."Yes, man. It's surprising for you to hear me say that, right?" Brain chuckled."Yeah." Alex said."What about you?" Brain asked."About what?" He was clueless."Did you enjoy your stay here or not, dummy?" He clarified."Oh – that. Like I said two days ago, when the old man told me that I would be king in the future, I did. I enjoyed my stay here. At first, it felt like I was living in hell, but I gradually enjoyed it. I didn't even feel reluctant to leave America when we wanted to relocate to this country, the way I'm feeling now." He explained."What?" Alex was prompted to ask because Brian chuckled after he uttered the statement."Look at you talking about enjoying your little adventure here when you were ranting and crying about leaving this place because you couldn't endure to live here.

He assured me."Check this babe out. She's beautiful, right?" He placed his phone in front of Alex to see."Guy, I'm not in the mood for that." Alex didn't look at the phone's screen."I don't know why you are anxious. Just chillax."Alex immediately rose from the seat as he saw the old man from afar."Welcome, Baba Agba. How was the meeting? What did the chief discuss with you?" He lowered his head."It was okay. We just had a little discussion. Are your parents and Vivian inside?" They were shocked, especially by Alex' outfit. They looked at them glaringly while muttering some words, their jaws dropping.Their gaze was fixed on them as they struggled to walk to the center of the spot, the center of attraction where the king, his chiefs, and other royal members were seated. The drummers, who had been beating the drums for almost an hour, abruptly stopped on seeing them, making everything quiet like a graveyard for a few seconds. The king stood up from his royal seat, fuming as he saw them. The old man replied as Alex walked behind him. They had the ritual procedure, but it was more intense than before. The old man prayed on Alex's behalf and appeased the gods to make him triumph in the battle."I didn't know when you left; I was worried when I woke up and couldn't find you until your sister told me you and the old man were in the shrine." Brian said as Alex walked into the room. "How would you know when you are a heavy sleeper?" Alex scoffed."That's funny, coming from a person who snores." He retorted."You call me a snorer? The bathroom does not have a standing shower but only a tap that runs water into buckets. He strained to lean down and use the bowl from the water-filled bucket to pour water on his body. He avoided scrubbing his back and his wrist, which had cuts from the fortification, with the sponge he had brought along from the city, because of what the old man applied to them after the fortification. "This will fasten the healing process." The old man had said, after he applied a substance that seemed like a mixture of a leaf and other things to the cuts, before they went to bed. He didn't spend up to three minutes in the bathroom, which was unusual of him because he was in pain. "2:45!" He exclaimed as he checked the time on his phone after he had dried himself up.
