Chapter 8

Maya POV

It had been three years, and coming back here caused a lot of feelings to rush through me, but I didn't want that to bother me.

I took off my dark-shade glasses and walked through the security check.

"It's so good to be home," I muttered, walking with the luggage.

However, the stares I got and the mutters coming out of the people's mouths made me slightly uncomfortable.

"No she's a star, it's obvious..." Another answered.

But I Ignored their words and continued moving. I got outside the airport where the taxi I booked was waiting for me.

"What?!" I exclaimed, and he did the same. It seemed we were both shocked to see ourselves.

"What are you doing back here looking so..." He trailed off shocked.

"You look so good..."

He paused and then continued.

"You've changed a lot from the last time I saw you. I mean, you're all mature, and pretty."

His words were kind, and I gave him a small smile to show my appreciation.

That woman could light up a room just by walking into it. And now, she was mine again. Or maybe she never stopped being mine.I sighed, running a hand through my hair as the door shut behind her. I could still feel the heat of her palm in mine, and the words I had just spoken echoed in my mind: "Yeah, she is my wife to be."Did I mean it? Yes.Did I plan to say it right there and then? Absolutely not.It was a moment of impulse, but not regret. I had spent years messing things up, making wrong decisions, choosing fleeting things over what really mattered. And Maya... she had always been the one who mattered most.Lisa's eyes were still locked on the closed door like she wanted to burn a hole through it. I didn’t feel sorry for her—not anymore. Alex’s words kept echoing in my head: "She is my wife to be." I didn’t even know how to feel about it anymore. That moment, that bold declaration, it felt like a lie I told, and yet he made it real. Did that mean I said yes without meaning to? Did that mean we were getting back together? No. I couldn’t just let that happen. Not without answers. Not without understanding what went wrong before. I wasn’t going to fall into his arms just because he suddenly decided to return. I needed to know what happened that night. The night everything broke. The night I called him in my most desperate moment and Lisa answered.I stood up from the bed. The room was dark, the moonlight from the window spreading across the floor like a path. That was when I remembered that Grandma Loretta was throwing a launch party in the ballroom. It was filled with people of high status.I dragged my gaze around to see many unfamiliar faces pour into the hallways. “Oh my God, someone fell down the stairs.” I heard someone say. “She is losing consciousness.”“Somebody call 911.” My legs finally decided to function and I rushed down the stairs to a groaning Lisa. “Oh my, Lisa, are you okay?” I asked. Her groans of pain only grew louder. "Was she trying to kill her sister?" "I guess so. Her sister is pregnant for the king's family, but she is not." “How pathetic! "Soon enough, all the people there started pointing accusing fingers at me.“No, I swear, I didn't push her. She tripped. I didn't… believe me…please.” I pleaded in a petrified tone. No

My husband just said he doesn't want me anymore. “I can't take this anymore, grandma.” Alex continued in a high-pitched voice. “Don't make such a joke, Alexander King. You are not divorcing Maya” I heard Grandma Loretta say with finality in her voice. “You can't make me stay with her. You forced me to marry her by threatening my position in the company, and I did what you asked. You can't force me to stay with her.” Alex argued. “You can't divorce her. There is too much at stake here.” Grandma Loretta said. “Really? Are you worried about that? Aren't you bothered by what she just did? She killed Lisa's unborn child, Grandma. That's Caden's only child and our family's heir. I'm not going to stay married to a murderer.” “Don't call her that!” “Why? Because you know it's true. You've always supported her every single time. I was so broke."No other thoughts, Maya," I urged myself again. However, I reached the entrance of the mall quicker than expected. It took me some time to come to terms with, but in those times, I stood there, planning on how to carry out the operation, when I heard someone call out to me."Hello miss?" His voice was tender. Yet, I shook with fear not so visible to him.The man who had called me was so well dressed that I wondered what he wanted with someone like me."Me?" My palm rested on my chest as I questioned and he nodded. "Yes you," he responded, making me swallow.I thought it was one of the staff of the mall, or maybe the head of security, who found my standing there suspicious."How may I help you?" I finally took the bold step to ask, but his next words almost caused me to sink."A beauty li

Finally, after one last push, I felt a strange release, and my body collapsed onto the bed, relieved to hear the cry of my newborn.“You're going to be alright. You shout "take a look at your pretty baby,” the nurse explained, her eyes fixed on me with a small smile on her lips.“Finally, a family I can call my own,” I muttered as my eyes closed on their own. I heard Alex chuckle from the other end. “Of course, you called to ask for money,” he drawled " Can you not be a burden for Once? You should have gotten the memo by now. No more allowance for you because you don't deserve it."I swallowed past the lump in my throat. I was about to reply him when he said, “And don't you ever call me for something like this ever again. I have important things to do, a company to run.” He ended to call before I could say anything else.I stared at the phone confused, but not surprised.
