I want a divorce

Chapter one

MAYA

I stood frozen at the spot as my sister tripped and fell down the stairs.

Lisa's screams of horror reached through the hallway.

I heard hurried footsteps approaching.

That was when I remembered that Grandma Loretta was throwing a launch party in the ballroom.

It was filled with people of high status.

I dragged my gaze around to see many unfamiliar faces pour into the hallways.

“Oh my God, someone fell down the stairs.” I heard someone say.

“She is losing consciousness.”

“Somebody call 911.”

My legs finally decided to function and I rushed down the stairs to a groaning Lisa.

“Oh my, Lisa, are you okay?” I asked.

Her groans of pain only grew louder.

"Was she trying to kill her sister?"

"I guess so.  Her sister is pregnant for the king's family, but she is not."

“How pathetic! "

Soon enough, all the people there started pointing accusing fingers at me.“No, I swear, I didn't push her. She tripped. I didn't… believe me…please.” I pleaded in a petrified tone.

No one seems to be bothered about Lisa's pain anymore.

“Everyone was glaring at me.

“What's happening here?” A deep masculine voice resonated, silencing all the accusing voices.

I smiled as I heard my husband's voice, feeling a sense of relief.

But Alex rushed to Lisa when he saw her groaning on the floor

“Lisa!” He rushed to her.

“She fell down the stairs. Someone called the ambulance already.”

“It hurts. It hurts so bad.” Lisa groaned.

“It's okay. You'll be fine. I'll take you to the hospital now.” He said in a soft tone he rarely uses for me.

I stepped forward to help my sister.

“Take a step back, Maya.” Alex's harsh voice stopped me . I turned to look at him and I saw his eyes were red with fury.

“I didn't do it, Alex. You believe me, right?” I asked,

a part of me praying that he does.

Our relationship status has shifted these past few days.

It wasn't like when we first got married two months ago.

We understand each other better now. I'm sure he believes I would do something like that.

“Your recent action proves otherwise. It wouldn't be the first time you bullied her,it won't be a surprise if you intend on killing her now that she is pregnant.” He yelled, his tone was cold and angry.

“We need to get her to the hospital before her condition worsens,” I said.

“Don't!” Alex said harshly just as I was about to touch Lisa.

“I just want to help her. She is my sister.”

“And hurt her again?” My lips parted as he said those words.

“You did try to hurt her once even though she is your sister. It's better if you stay away, Maya. I've got this.” he said, with finality in his tone.

I blinked back the tears that gathered at the corner of my eyes. I heard Grandma Loretta's voice.

“What happened?!” She asked, her tone laced with worry.

“I'm going to lose my baby.” Lisa began sobbing inconsolably.

Fear reflected in Alex's eyes as he hugged her tightly to his chest.

Alex immediately carried Lisa in his arms and headed to the door.

He didn't even spare me a glance.

The crowd slowly started to disappear after they left.

Grandma Loretta and I stood at the front of the stairs.

I blinked, trying to keep my tears at bay.

Grandma Loretta had always been the only person who liked me in the King household. She would certainly not mind that I cried in front of her.

Maybe her doting was because she was a friend of my Grandma's.

She moved closer to me and placed a hand on my shoulder.

“You've always been a good kid, Maya. But sometimes, you let your jealousy get the best of you.” She said,

“No, Grandma. I swear I didn't do it.” My voice cracked as I spoke.

She merely shook her head and walked away. A stray tear fell from my eyes.

.

.

I don’t even know how I got home.

I lay on the bed, my gaze fixated on the ceiling.

I thought about how to explain to my husband that I didn't hurt Lisa.

I don't even know if he would believe me. My heart bleeds as I remember the certainty in his eyes when he accused me of hurting my pregnant sister.

I could never be that heartless. He knew that.

The way he held her so intimately in my presence made my heart stung.

I was his legal wife, but Alex doesn't seem to regard me as such.

He still views our marriage as a mere business alliance.

The only reason he agreed to consummate our marriage was because Grandma Loretta wanted a grandchild.

He makes sure to make love to me every day so we can make that happen.

He couldn't disobey her. Or he might lose his position as the heir to the King corporation, the largest business empire in the States, single-handedly owned by Grandma Loretta. Alex needed her support.

So he married me to please her.

I hoped our relationship would eventually work into something beautiful.

Our sex this morning was gentle, unlike the rough ones we usually engage in. I took it as a good sign.

Until everything got ruined at the party.

But I'm ready to clear the air. I'll talk to him as soon as he gets back.

I walked to the window and. Soon enough, I saw Alex's car entering the mansion. I need to go and meet him.

I ran out of the room and down the stairs. I was just about to take a turn and enter the living room when I heard my husband say something I'd never thought I'd hear from him.

“I want a divorce.”

You are not divorcing Maya” I heard Grandma Loretta say with finality in her voice. “You can't make me stay with her. You forced me to marry her by threatening my position in the company, and I did what you asked. You can't force me to stay with her.” Alex argued. “You can't divorce her. There is too much at stake here.” Grandma Loretta said. “Really? Are you worried about that? Aren't you bothered by what she just did? She killed Lisa's unborn child, Grandma. That's Caden's only child and our family's heir. I'm not going to stay married to a murderer.” “Don't call her that!” “Why? Because you know it's true. You've always supported her every single time.
