Ma'am, please choose me instead of the one you chose earlier. I know this might sound like backbiting but I feel sorry for myself too. I shrugged my shoulders as I disengaged from her hug. None of them wants to play with me. They call me ugly because of the scar on my face. They are all mean to me and avoid me like I have an infectious disease and I'm always alone with no one to talk to. I said sitting on the floor while hugging my legs and allowing more tears to flow.
The woman was quiet for a moment as she looked at me with almost wet eyes.
Oh dear this must have been very hard for you. You can go sit down and I'll talk with the sister.
After an hour, I saw Mrs. Lewis heading in my direction again and this time she was not alone, she was with her husband and the sister who was in charge of the orphanage. I suddenly felt nervous and the heat burning me up made sweat run down my face. a million thoughts ran through my mind as I wondered if they were going to scold me or punish me for what I said.
"Is she the one you mentioned earlier? the sister asked focusing her gaze on the woman. "
" yes, " she answered with a smile plastered on her face.
Oh, was all the sister said before calling my name, making me stand immediately at the sound of her voice.
Layla Belmond dear, as you can see this will be your new parents from now on and they are here to take you home with them.
My eyes widened in surprise as I diverted my gaze from her to the couple and a smile formed from the corner of my mouth. I was in such a hurry to leave this place that I didn't even have time to say goodbye to my other siblings or rather I was too scared to face Lily knowing well of what I'd done.
What? Eddie and I exclaimed when the sister informed us about Layla's adoption. She didn't even say goodbye to any of us, was she that excited that she forgot about us?
It's been two weeks since Layla left us and she never came to visit us nor did she send us a letter. I was worried about Eddie and I. What if we ended up in different families? I shook my head in denial as I went further to look for him among the others. We ran out of the orphanage after stealing the location where Laylas was. All attempts to find her failed and we ended up in a taxi driver's house after falling asleep in his car.
It's been 10 years since we got adopted into different families, my foster father may not be rich but all I know is he loves both Eddie and me very much, the same as Grandma Jenny. Eddie dropped out of school to help Grandma with the restaurant while Dady Guy continued driving his taxi. I got home that evening with a brown envelope that contained my scholarship letter. It brought so much joy to us that we forgot about me starting a new life in a completely new area all alone.
It was my first day in the university and I did my utmost best not to be late for classes. I was in a haste to the class that I didn't realize when I bombed someone. He Just allowed me to stumble on him and fall with his books scattered on the floor. I went down immediately and picked up the scattered books and lifted my head only to meet an annoyed face staring at me. My heart started pounding in my chest as I thought of what I've gotten into. It's my first day in school and I'm already causing trouble. I'm really really sorry I quickly apologized while handing his books over to him. His face somehow looks familiar but that does not matter now. What matters is for me to hurry to class.
The class was quite empty with only a handful of students inside. I guess I was too early, I said as I picked a seat and took out the notes I made to review on the topic that was to be treated today. Soon afterward I was distracted by the noise that seemed to be coming from the entrance of the class. I quickly removed my earpods as I watched the students enter the class in pairs chatting and laughing. They all seemed to be coming from a very rich home as they were dressed in expensive brand clothing, bags, and shoes but what caught my attention most was the guy I bombed into earlier. I felt my heartbeat rising above normal again as we made eye contact. What is wrong with him, is he always in a bad mood I questioned myself as I diverted my gaze to the lecturer who was already standing in front of the class.
He cleared his throat before calling on our attention with the microphone.
Can you all be seated please he said in a polite tone. Thank you, hum today we are to start with the first topic of this I presume you must have gone through but before I proceed with today's lesson, I'll like to acknowledge the presence of our scholars. I was snapped out of my thoughts when I heard my name and stood up alongside others. I felt everyone gaze at me and the class was a bit chatty before the lecturer called for silence.
I was done with lectures for the day and I decided to walk home. I've always dreamt of having the perfect view of the sun setting and my evening walk earned me the privilege too. My hands were shoved in my sweatpants as I walked down the busy streets.
It was full of people hanging around with either family or lovers. The thought of my own family made the smile on my disappear. I slid her phone from her pocket and took a selfie to keep track of memories.
I was eating the ice cream I just bought from the vendor opposite the road when I heard a loud noise. I immediately went to where the noise was coming from only to find a guy laying in a pool of his blood. His bicycle was hit by a car accidentally but what annoyed me was that the owner of the car didn't bother to check if the person he hit was ok. Hey, are you okay?
Tried to help him up but he was too heavy, so I pulled out my cell phone and quickly called the ambulance which appeared after a couple of minutes. He was immediately rushed to the hospital and the nurses took him to the observation room where they were attending to his wounds.
I could only wait outside the room and wait for feedback from the nurses. The door flew open and I heard a feminine voice call me.
"Ma'am, she called for the second time as she tried taking off her gloves. "
" Nurse, how's he? I tried to inquire as I rubbed my hands in nervousness ."" A small smile curved on the nurse's lips before she began to talk. Ma'am, there's nothing to be worried about. Your boyfriend is fine. Luckily he didn't sustain any serious injury. Well, you can go inside and see him she said and left leaving me speechless. Hi, I greeted as I entered the ward where he was. Thank you he said almost whispering. Lily shook her head before taking a few steps to keep his belongings beside him.I was about to place the things on the floor when my eyes met with that of the man on the bed. I gulped in surprise as I discovered who it was, meanwhile, he was just there staring at her.I felt my face burn up, I became nervous all of a sudden and I quickly placed his items next to him. Well, it's good to know your injuries are not too serious. I said making a UU-turn and ran out of the ward before he could even alter a word. Once I was out of sight, I took in as much oxygen as I could
" Does it hurt? She asked in a provocative tone. What is wrong with you three? And what did I do to earn this slap? Lily asked, trying hard to hide the tears that were forming in her eyes." for stealing what does not belong to you one of them said""Lily was confused as she glanced at the three angry-looking girls in front of her. I don't understand the grin in between her teeth but could still be heard" " I'm talking about Mark and Harvey, asshole. Who do you think you are? " she said with a light chuckle before she continued to insult her about how poor and ugly she looked and doesn't have any standards" Lily could only wish for the earth to eat her up now as she was dying in embarrassment. Soon other students gathered and were watching them."Lily had only made friends with Mark and he was good to her but she wasn't aware he was out of bounds as for Harvey, they are only bench mates and only talk to each other when need be Lily thought about the situation as she sighs in frustrat
Laying on her small size bed with her medium-length hair spread all over the mattress, Lily felt tears pricking from the two corners of her eyes making her vision blurry as she continued in her trail of thoughts. It was hard and unacceptable for us to make peace with the fact that our parents were gone and we will never see them again, making us orphans at this tender age. Life took us unaware and unprepared, still, we have to give it a try to make it out alive. The pain I was feeling was so much that I couldn't bring myself to cry anymore, my tear glands seemed to have automatically dried off and breathing became almost impossible. Believe it or not, good people exist in this world. Mr. and Mrs. Josh are living example through their works but sometimes, there's just so much people can do for you despite how good their intentions towards you might be. Regardless of being just our neighbors, they've been nothing but kind towards us especially since we lost our parents. Mrs. Ja
