Chris' POV
I watched as Zack said goodbye to the two of us before leaving happily. What is so interesting about the envelope that made him excited? I should have taken a look at it. Knowing Zack, he isn't one to get happy so easily. Either way, it's none of my business. I've had enough entertainment for the night, so I should leave and attend to my business. As I turned to leave, a hand grabbed me by the shoulder, and I turned to find Mr. Alfred watching me with squinted eyes. All manner of familiarity and kindness that he had when speaking with Zack now gone, replaced by suspicious eyes staring down at me. It was as if he finally found the thief stealing from his pot of joy. "What the..." "Why is it that whenever you are around, some sort of trouble happens around Zack? Last time you were around, your customer found it convenient to spill their food right by the table just as Zack was passing by." he interrupted me before I could finish my sentence. "What do you mean by that?" I shrugged off his grip, using my hand to rub my my shoulder before adjusting my suit. "I'm sure things like this happen all the time. Places like this just tend to attract crazy customers." "And you are one of those I guess?" Mr. Alfred spoke again. He just wasn't willing to let it go easily. "Then why don't you prove your claims instead of throwing baseless accusations at me?" I squared up to him. "You may be his cousin, but Zack is a good guy and this is one of the few places he finds peace away from all the scuffles. So if you plan to come here and make life here bad for him, I suggest you back off!" "Whatever old man," I snorted at him. "I have places to be than here anyway." With that, I turned and exited the restaurant, angry at Mr. Albert. Just who does he think he is to tell me off like that? At that moment, my chauffer, Gibson, drove the car to where I was standing before coming out and opening the car door for me. I entered the car and told him the address to drive me to. All throughout the drive, I seethed with anger at the fact that I couldn't find better words to tell the old man off. How dare he, a mere restaurant manager, try to put me down on an important day like this? I was busy with my thoughts that I didn't realize that we had arrived until Gibson opened the car door and I was greeted by a waft of the chilly night air. Composing myself by adjusting my tie, I put on a bright smile before stepping out of my car. Two of the hotel employees, a male and a female greeted me in their work uniform. "Mr. Burke is waiting for you inside Mr. Vaughn," the woman gestured with a pretty smile. If I wasn't here on business, I would have taken my time to appreciate what a beauty she is, but knowing Mr. Burke, he likely has the two examining my actions. "Lead the way please," I answered politely. I was greeted with a scent of lilies as soon as I stepped feet into the reception. The hotel exuded wealth, class and opulence. From the delicately carved ceilings, the beautiful chandeliers that were a work of art, the simple but classy furniture, latest technology and the marble tiled floor, it was as if one has stepped into a different world, and this was the signature of the Burke hotels, the best in the country, where only the richest are found. Not long after, we entered the elevator and smoothly glided up to the 15th floor where the man's office was. "Please wait inside, Mr. Burke will be with you shortly," the female employee stated, opening the office and letting me inside. But despite the wealth that the hotel screamed off, the office would appear to be in a simpler taste. It was the traditional office, with oak wood furniture consisting of shelves filled with books, a large desk with a globe on it, and chairs by its side. A careful glance would show nothing of a personal item in the office, meaning that this wasn't the man's original workplace but a meeting point. Then in front of were dark brown sofas surrounding the coffee table which was atop a carpet. "Please have a seat sir. Would like us to offer you anything in particular? Coffee? Wine? Alcohol? Or some snacks," the woman asked. "Water will do please," I said with a smile. "As you wish sir." The two walked out and I sighed in relief. I had been wary the moment I made those two. Now I can finally breathe peacefully. From what I've heard of Mr. Burke, if his employees weren't impressed with a client, he could easily cancel the meeting, so I had to be on alert. In less than a minute, the employees brought a tray with water and some snacks before leaving and twenty minutes later, Mr. Burke, a self proclaimed king of his own empire, the man who had stood the test of time and who had come from nothing and established himself in the world appeared and I stood up, greeting him respectfully. "Mr. Vaughn. You had been very adamant, in your trying to meet me," the Grey haired old man cut straight to the chase, walking to the one seater at the head and sitting on it before gesturing for me to also take a seat. "And because your grandmother and I go way back, I decided to give you the chance to hear you out." Mr. Burke was someone who appreciated his time more than anything, so I knew this was his way of starting the meeting without any further pleasantries. "... as you know, the Vaughn enterprises has been trying to expand... we have been trying to build a new resort.... the 25,000 acres of land has already been required and at the moment I need investors like your distinguished self..." "What kind of resort do you plan to build Mr. Vaughn?" the old man cut me off. Why won't he let me finish? I was getting to that anyway. "The first of its kind in the country. It's going to be one of the world wonders and also a tourist attraction which will increase revenue for the country and create a luxurious space for..." "I mean," the old man cut me off again, and I tried hard to suppress my ager at him. "What kind of world do you plan to create through that resort?" "Uh, I," I stuttered. I wasn't expecting this kind of question. I was told beforehand that this man preferred sincerity over everything, so I humbled myself, had sleepless night cramming all the ideas and proposals worked on by my employees, even coming by myself and leaving my secretary behind so he won't steal my spotlight, but this man just keeps getting on my nerves. "Well the kind of world I plan to build..." "I asked because you mentioned a luxurious place," Mr. Burke interrupted me for the third time that night. "That means it won't be available to most persons, right?" "Right," I nodded. "Then it would only be a space for the rich and wealthy. Hmm, then I will like to hear about the details of the building?" 20 minutes later, I came out of the building myself. This time, Mr. Burke didn't bother having someone escort me, so I maintained my composure, but as soon as I entered the car and Gibson shit the door, I let out an unnerving scream. I can't believe what I had to go through in the hands of someone who was nothing in the first part of his life. Gaining all this wealth must have gotten into his head. "Where to next, sir?" Gibson asked from the driver's seat. "Take me to the bar," I said taking off my tie and throwing it away at the seat. "Uh, sir," Gibson was a bit hesitant. "Madam said to take you home in time for the dinner Ma has prepared," he stated. Madam was how he and the rest of the workers referred to my mother and Ma my grandmother. "Forget the stupid dinner and just take me where I said," I replied sinking into the seats. Stupid family dinner. It's not like I could face that keen woman after having failed to secure the deal. "Yes sir," Gibson stated, driving me to the one bar I frequented. At the bar, I requested a vip parlor and ordered all the best drinks I could think of. Less than an hour later, I blacked out and some time later, I was woken up by Gibson's voice. "Sir, it's already 1om. Your mother's been worried calling asking for you to be home. She says it's urgent." Gibson told me. "They can't even let me, an adult enjoy my time outside. No wonder Zack left," I laughed at my own dry joke, attempting to stand up. Gibson quickly caught me before I fell. Putting my arm over his shoulder, Gibson helped me into the car. By the time we arrived at the villa, my head was already starting to clear up. I headed straight to my room and landed face first onto the bed, about to close my eyes and go to sleep when I heard the click of none other than my mother's heels. "What is so urgent that it can't wait until the morning?" I complained. "Huh," I heard my mother snort. "You have no idea do you? Well he is back now." "Who is back?" I turned to look at her, and mother's face was in a frown. "Who else do you think? Zack of course?" "What? What do you mean he is back?"Chris' POV"What do you mean he is back? He just got off work earlier?""Wait, do you still hang around him knowing he is your competition? Dammit," mother gritted her teeth."Well, someone needed to show him his place from time to time. Still I can't believe he found his way back. And how did grandma forgive him so easily? How could she let him back in after he left on his own terms?" I said sitting up on the bed and mother walked over to sit beside me."She didn't just forgive him. She brought him back herself. And I think she plans to put him back to work soon."I didn't notice anything different about Zack earlier. Did he make a fool of me, knowing he would be coming back here? No he can't possibly have known. That fool is easy to read. Then grandma must have done things on her own."How could she stab me in the back like that when I've been working my ass off these past years to please her? Look at me. I'm almost thirty and I don't even have a proper girlfriend.""She knows she'
Third person POVAlice appeared in front of Rose's place dressed up a white summer dress to go with pink loafers, a pink Terry wave bucket hat and a pink purse.Without wasting time to knock, Alice input the code and entered the place, going straight to Rose's bedroom, expecting to find Rose deep in sleep only to find her sitting on her bed with one knee propped up and watching the view of the city her ceiling to floor window provided."Rose, I've been calling you on the phone. Why weren't you picking? And why do you look like your puppy died?" Alice asked, concerned."Do you think I should get a puppy?" Rose said, not bothering to turn away from the window. "Or maybe a cat? What brings you so early in the morning anyway?""I completely forgot to tell you yesterday," Alice brought out the tickets from her purse and handed them to Rose who turned to look at her for the first time since she came into the room."You going to a party?" Rose said before looking at the tickets and her eyebr
Alice's POVAs soon as I walked away so as not to be a third wheel, I found myself aimlessly roaming around the deck of the ship. There were lots of people around, mostly in groups of twos and above enjoying themselves as they talked and drank while some cozied up to each other, making the environment look lively, yet I felt lonely.Just 10 minutes away from my friend and I feel lonely. I really need to do something about this. Else I will end up having the most boring vacation. The night breeze blew on my exposed skin, making me shiver from it's cold, so I decided to go back to the room and get a shawl at least. The stairs that would lead to the rooms were on the other side, and in that moment that I made that decision, I turned to that direction and suddenly bumped hard into someone. The heel of my shoe turned making me lose my footing and almost giving into gravity.Luckily, whoever the gentleman was caught me before I fell on her butt and made a complete embarrassment out of mysel
"Hey, why don't you let go of this lady right here," Zack cut straight to the chase. "It doesn't look like she wants to be in your company right now. Right?" Zack looked at Rose, waiting for her to say something, but she just looked at him weirdly."Huh," Jacob snorted. "And who are you?" he said voicing out his hostility, his face no longer expressing kindness. "I believe this is none of your business. So why don't you mind your business and just let us be? The lady and I are just having a date."Zack looked at Jacob who didn't seem ready to let go, then at Rose who now had a smirk on her face, her eyes sparkling with mischief. Just watching the show that was no longer about her and waiting to see how it will unfold.'You chose to interfere. Let's see how you go through with it'. Her eyes spoke."Come on man, let's not do this," Zack placed his hand on the man's shoulder before leaning right next to his ear and whispering. "I saw when and what you slipped into that drink. If I'm lyin
Third person point of viewThe following morning, Rose slowly started to wake up. Her eyes still closed, memories of the previous night flooded into her head, making her smile, and for the first time in her life, Rose found herself extending her hand, trying to reach the person that would be lying next to her, thinking of all the things she would like to do to them."Rose? Are you alright?" A voice called out her name. But it wasn't the voice she was expecting, making her frown. "Rose are you still sleeping? Wake up."Rose felt herself being shaken awake by delicate hands, and she quickly opened her eyes confused, and when she found Alice looking at her with worried eyes, she looked around the room once again.Still confused, Rose raised the sheets and peeked in only to find herself fully dress as she was the other night. The realization that part of the 'supposed memories' were her imagination and likely 'dream' made her feel disappointed in herself."I didn't know you could move lik
Third person POV.As the two had breakfast and on their way to the duty free shopping on jewelry, clothing and souvenirs, Rose kept looking around hoping she would catch a glimpse of him amongst the people that were passing by them."What do you think of this one?" Alice appeared in front of her, distracting her from her thoughts.Rose was seated on a bench at the back of the clothing store where the dressing rooms were located. She looked at Alice who was now wearing a t-shirt with 'I've discovered a new me' written on the it, paired with a black flowy skirt, a black tote bag slung on her shoulder."The skirt looks nice, but the shirt is a bit cringe," Rose commented on the outfit."I totally like it because of the writing. I'm going to get this," Alice decided, tracing the pattern on her new shirt. "What about you?" she looked at Rose. "You should get something for yourself. How about a new hat?" she suggested."Nah, I think I will prefer some jewelry. Probably a bracelet," Rose sto
12 years ago.Third person POVIt was a hot summer afternoon and Rose had just come out of the school counselor's office when she decided to get a drink from the school cafe. The past few days weren't easy for her as she was currently working on what courses she should add and what activities would add more to her portfolio.Rose entered the not so busy café wearing a floral summer dress with sunglasses and a summer hat before settling on a chair and that was when the waitress came in in a simple shirt and jeans.Rose had been noticing her for the past few weeks. It wasn't just the girl's beauty or her radiant smile that caught Rose's attention. It was her air of confidence with a layer of innocence and her ability to lit up a room and bring it out of boredom which was what Rose needed in her life at the moment.Alice was a popular girl in the college and not because she was rich or the smartest. No, she was the kind of person who made everyone feel comfortable around her. When Rose e
*A week later and Rose was finally done registering her new courses. It was a hard decision for Rose but it was necessary. But after Nana passed away only Rose was the direct heir to the Gabrielle Enterprises, and if she doesn't step up and take over, who will?Mr. Montreal apparently. And not just him, even the maids had their little plan to take over the house while Rose was mourning the lost of her grandparents. It's kind of funny how everyone appears so loyal until that very day when your weakness shows and the chameleons start to show their real color.Rose walked into the the business and finance department with her bag strapped over her left shoulder and her time table on her right hand unsure, of which floor or direction class BSC 7 would be.She watched the other students as they scurried to get to their respective classes as it was only a few minutes to 8am.And that was when Rose spotted her. Unlike the other students that rushed, Alice was seemingly taking something from h
At the office, Kimberly stared into space, her eyes bloodshot and barely blinking."Excuse me. Hey. Miss Wells? Are you alright? Boss," Noah called out to her, but even her favorite title was not enough to bring her out of her thoughts, until Noah banged on her desk and she almost jumped out of her seat, startled.Kimberly blinked before looking at Noah who was looking at her, concern clearly written on his face."Are you okay boss?" Noah asked once again."Oh yeah. I'm fine. Totally. Why do you ask?" Kimberly asked, staring at him."It's just that, I have been calling out to you for some time now. You look like you haven't slept a wink for the past week," Noah commented, and true to his word, Kimberly did look a bit disheveled. She no longer looked as neat as she used to be when she first became a manager."Oh, I've just been really busy is all," Kim shrugged it off. "I'm the boss here, and we've already sent our proposal to the best company out there. I'm just hoping they respond to
The sound of clicking heels resounded through the large office as she entered, and the smell of her perfume greeted the workers. Some of them turned their heads towards her, greeting her with polite smiles.Kimberly answered back with the same energy, feeling on top of the world.Dressed in a black leather skirt and red blouse that matched her red lipstick, Kimberly swayed her head to the right, her curly brown hair moving with the same motion.Satisfied with herself, Kim went to her seat as the head of the office and sat down and soon after, some of her team members started submitting their files.Kimberly collected the files and assured them that she would look over them. After that, she called some of the members who had already submitted their files and showed them what needed to be corrected and when to resubmit the files.Having finished doing that in two hours' time, Kim went through her desk, looking for a particular file but which was nowhere to be found."It has been two wee
With John now gone, Zack finally settled down in his new, spacious and well-furnished office, with the windows overlooking the busy city. Not only were the computers and furniture latest, but the office even had a fridge containing all sorts of drinks, a coffee machine and then a snacks cabinet.Zack had just sat in his comfy chair when a knock came on the door, and he gave permission for the person to enter. The door opened and a young man walked in, seemingly in his early twenties, and he had a goofy smile on as he awkwardly walked towards Zack."And who might you be?" Zack asked the unfamiliar face."I am Nicolas Coleson and I will be your secretary slash assistant from today on," the guy introduced rather excitedly."You look too happy for someone who got assigned to work for someone like me," Zack noted."Well, even though you are a hit or miss, a college dropout like myself could never imagine I would get to the top so soon from being a mere clerk," Nick said, and Zack's mouth d
As the meeting went on, Zack listened attentively to what everyone had to say, mentally making notes. Everyone, including Chris, had a thing or two to say, and after an hour and a half, the meeting was finally concluded."Now before we go," Mrs. Vaughn brought everyone's attention to the sore topic once again. "As some of you here know, Zack once worked here, and he had such great potential, and that is why I didn't hesitate to bring him back. But the consequence of his past decision is that he only gets to start all over again. His presence here is merely formalities to introduce him back here. Some of you here have worked with him, and some of you have heard of him, I am sure. So what do you think about this old woman's decision?" Mrs. Vaughn said authoratively, although her last question made it sound like she was asking for their suggestion. The room was quiet for a second, with everyone processing her words and unsure how to attempt to answer her tricky question."How could we po
"Hello, Zack. Long time no see."Mr. Walker, a man in his early sixties, looking immaculate in his striped suit, his grey-tinged hair stylishly pushed back, walked in, then looked around at the tiny storage that was supposed to be Zack's office."As if finding you wasn't hard enough, I come to this," Mr. Walker said, looking at Zack."What do I say? Welcome to my humble office," Zack said plainly."Humble would be a compliment," Mr. Walker grimaced. "Even though you are starting from scratch, I must say that this place is kind of far-fetched. Does someone have a grudge against you or something?""Please state your business here. As you can see, I have a lot going on for me right now.""Ouch!" Mr. Walker faked offense. "Given our history, you must not be happy to see me here. But as someone who has been your mentor for years and only wishes the best for you, I must say that this is an embarrassment. But I guess you can't be lucky twice.""I doubt. You must be happy to see me like this.
Zack's POVI stood in front of the huge building, different emotions going through me.I remembered the time I came here as an intern, full of dreams and hopes and how diligently I worked, while making up my mind about the accomplishments I would strive for once I became a full-time employee. Then, of the time I came here fresh off after graduation in a suit and tie with well polished leather shoes and a briefcase. But now I stand in front of this building once again, and I am not sure what I want anymore. How has this place been after all these years? Is it right to come here at all?Chris turned to look at me with a smirk that expressed his calmness at the whole situation, making me realize that I was now the stranger here."Goodluck at the meeting Bro," Chris said with a salute before turning and sauntering into the building as if it was his home, most of the workers greeting him with a familiar smile as he passed by them, and he answered each one of them while acknowledging them.
Third-person POVZack woke up to the loud shrill of his alarm tone.Picking his phone up, he turned off the alarm before sitting up and wiping his face with his hands.Today, Monday has finally come. When Zack will be reintroduced by his grandmother to the company where he will be working in once again.Zack remembered Chris' words when he told him he was planning to resume work. Since then, they hadn't talked much, and in front of the family, the two would pretend as if everything was normal between them.Getting up from his bed, Zack went straight to the bathroom to do his morning routine, after which he brushed his teeth and took a shower.Coming out, Zack walked to his closet and came out wearing a black suit. He was about to start wearing his tie when a knock came on his door.Zack thought without a doubt that it would be his mother, but when he opened the door, he found his sister, Sawyer, instead."Sawyer, hey," Zack said awkwardly."Hi," the girl replied shyly. She was in her
"Hahaha," I found myself laughing instead saying a direct answer. It's not like I had a good answer for her anyway, at least not the answer she would like to hear. "Erin, why are you getting so emotional on such a good day?" I said squeezing her hands and Erin looked at me with a smile and so much hope in her eyes that I wanted to look away. "Come on, let's do our best today. And after work, we can go out like you wanted. My treat."Erin's smile faltered a bit but she nodded anyways. "Okay. I get to choose where we go to.""Sure. Let's get back to work," I said opening the door and we both got out together."You know what?" I said, turning to look at Erin. "I think I need to go to the bathroom real quick. Why don't you go ahead and I will catch up in a few minutes?" I said to Erin."Sure," She answered in a low tone.Without waiting another moment, I rushed in a different direction, going straight to the ladies' room. When I entered. I put the file by the sink and stared at myself thr
Kimberly's POV I gulped the rest of my coffee down, setting the cup by the side before staring at my screen in a blank manner, not sure where to start my work from. "Hey Kim," Erin called out my name and I looked up to find her standing over me with a concerned expression. "What's up with you? Everyone is happy after holiday but you look kind of cranky right now," Erin commented and I sighed. "My sister Em moved in with me, but since she is in her finals, she is being more of a leech. Taking some of my stuff and then coming back home late at night. It seems like she's in a new relationship and not concentrating on her finals which is kind of stressing me out as the older sister," I vented. "Ooh. Must have been hard. Your space is already small as it is. How's your father doing by the way?" Erin sympathized. "Well, he's seen better days," I shrugged it off as if it was nothing although it bugs me every now and then. "But what happened to your sister's boyfriend? I thought she liv
