Cayden Ellish ignored the woman’s question beside him as he fixed his gaze on the priest that would solemnize his matrimony with this unnamed actress as his pretend bride.
Five days ago, he did not imagine himself to be getting the services of a start-up actress to pose as his fake bride.
And why would he need to pay someone to marry him when he had a fiance whom he loves and intends to marry?
But then, his fiance ran away.
He could still remember the horror he felt when he found out that she was gone.
“What do you mean she is gone?”
Cayden Ellish’s left hand formed into a hard fist as he listened to his men whom he tasked to check the hotel room where his fiancee, Tori Hutton had been temporarily billeted.
“We checked her hotel room, Mr. Ellish. It was empty when we arrived sir. When we checked with the hotel administration, they confirmed what we found out. Ms. Hutton left last night.”
Cayden dropped the call and checked his messages for Tori’s. He found it and saw the time.
9:45 am.
At that time, he was busy in a meeting. He did not check his phone immediately, thinking it could wait.
He banged his fist on his desk and rubbed his face in frustration.
“It’s useless. Even if you checked your messages earlier, Tori has already been miles away. There is nothing you can do to stop her.”
Cayden frowned, looking at his best friend James holding his phone and reading his messages.
He snatched the phone from his friend’s hand and called someone. When his call was answered he did not mince words and started firing his instructions.
“I need you to do something for me. It should be under wraps. I do not want it to spill in the news, understand?” He ordered before hanging up.
“Why do you have to look for her? It was clear in her message that she does not want to get married. She ran away.” James pointed out.
“Tori was not like that. In all the years I have known her I never saw her cower from any challenge. If she really wanted out, she would have told me straight in the face. She would not run out of me like a thief in the night.” Cayden argued before he left his seat and went to stand behind the glass door on the other side of his room.
He opened the door and went to the view deck, and his vision was immediately filled with blue skies tinged with gray. The weather seemed to match his mood, bleak and dark.
When he seemed to collect himself, he went back to his office, got his phone and keys, and went out with James following behind him.
Outside his office, his security men stood on alert. One went ahead to get to the elevator while the other five walked behind him and James.
Several people bowed their heads in greeting when they passed by, but he paid them no heed. His mind was elsewhere.
The elevator doors opened and he and James stepped inside, followed by his men. The box was silent. It seemed like even the elevator knew that their boss was in a dire mood.
The tense atmosphere continued until they reached the lobby. He walked stiffly outside where a metallic green Lamborghini was waiting.
He went to the driver’s seat and pressed the accelerator speeding out of his company’s building with the word Ellish embossed on its facade in brass letters.
James shook his head while his eyes followed his best friend’s speeding car as it grew farther away from him. Then he went to his own car and went in the other direction.

“What do you mean you do not know where she is?” Marcus Ellish bellowed at his son, who stood stoically near his desk.
“You heard me, Tori is gone, and the wedding is off.”
To everyone, Cayden Ellish may have looked composed, but the ticking on the side of his jaw, just below his peach fuzz says otherwise.
He was trying so hard to control his emotions.
It was hard to admit to his parents, especially his father, that his fiancee had run out on him a few days before their wedding.
The pain of Tori’s rejection and the shame of canceling the wedding just when everything has been prepared is something he did not envision for himself.
And why would he have qualms about Tori?
They were in love. Or so he thought. A self-deprecating smile curled his lips.
Tori Hutton has been the love of his life - his first love and just a few months back, he thought she would be his last.
They were lab partners back in college. The first time they were assigned to a project together, they instantly hit it off. He felt a sort of camaraderie with her which was quite unusual because he was standoffish. He only got along with a few people which is why he had a limited circle of friends that included James.
Then there’s Tori. They became fast friends and before long, they started going out.
At first, they go on group dates, and study dates until it becomes more intimate with just the two of them - dinner dates, movie dates, or sometimes, they go to parties together.
After that semester, they became a couple.
But she is gone now.
She ditched him with nary an explanation.
“I am sorry, Cayden. I changed my mind. I can not marry you.’
That is the only message he got from her. She did not even have the courage to face him and tell him straight in the eye that she was jilting him.
Thinking about Tori, a pain seared his heart. It was so sudden that he found it difficult to breathe.
He looked at his father's stern face and forced himself to shove the pain aside. He did not need to acknowledge the onrush of feeling right now.
Not in front of his father. He can not show any sign of weakness in front of the OG Marcus Ellish.
It was a definite no.
Marcus Ellish raised him to become a fighter in the boardroom. And he was a fighter - always has been and always will be.
“What about the wedding this Sunday?” A woman’s voice butted in.
Cayden took his gaze from his father and transferred it to the middle-aged woman previously sitting quietly on the single couch. She was holding a cup of coffee and sipping from it before she carefully put down the cup and saucer on the adjoining wooden table.
Alicia Ellish, his mother, has always been the mediator between his father and him.
“We can not cancel the wedding and become a laughing stock in the industry.” Marcus Ellish declared, earning a frown from his son Cayden.
“It will not look good to our business partners and investors. I will lose face.” He added, his cheeks getting redder as he got angrier.
“Marcus!” Alicia exclaimed.
She rose from her seat and walked over to her husband to pacify him.
Cayden snorted.
He wanted to confront his father on where he figured in all these. If his feelings as his son mattered in the slightest. It appeared that his father only cared about the business.
“Are you done taking this out on me?” He spat out.
Cayden felt a little satisfaction seeing his father’s stupefied expression when he faced him. His jaw is dropping.
Without waiting for any reply, he marched out of the room. His footsteps were heavy on the wooden floor. He was determined to get out of his parents’ mansion fast.
He had to look for Tori.
She could not just walk out on him like this.
He needed her explanation. He needed to know why she was suddenly rejecting him.
He thought she loved him.
The Tori he knew was not like that.
“Cayden.”
He stopped in his tracks without looking back. He heard the soft staccato sounds of heels meeting the floor and waited.
“Cayden Ellish. I am talking to you, please turn around to face me.” She commanded in a voice that brooks no argument but still sounded soft and melodious to his ears.
Cayden’s shoulders tensed before he reluctantly turned his body around.
When they were face-to-face, Alicia Ellish sauntered to where he was standing, the sounds of her heels clicking.
She took Cayden’s right hand and enveloped them on her own.
A pain crossed over his face at the tender touch. He was reminded of that time long ago when she comforted him when he learned that she was not his real mother - that his real mother died while giving birth to him.
Something pricked his eyes.
Alicia let go of his hand to cup his cheeks as she would always do when he was a child and he comes to her for comfort.
“I am fine, mother.” He said evasively, looking away.
Alicia sighed, patting his cheek before taking her hand off him.
“I hope you won’t take this out on your father.”
At the mention of his father, something inside him rebelled.
His head whipped around to face his mother, anger lacing his voice.
“It is best that you say that to him. I think father needs to hear that more than me.” He muttered under his breath.
“Please.” Alicia Ellish looked her son in the eye, begging for understanding.
Cayden sighed. He knew that when it comes to his mother, his defenses usually crumbled in seconds.
His mother has always been a kind soul and he does not have the heart to hurt her.
“What shall I do?” He asked in a resigned voice.
“Will you trust me?”
Cayden paused for a while and then after a deep breath slightly nodded his head in assent.
Alicia smiled. It was not a full-blown smile. Just a lift in the corner of her eyes and slightly crinkled eyes.
“Don't worry. We will resolve this matter and your father will let you off the hook.” She promised.
She patted his hand one last time before turning back to where she came from.

“What are these?” Cayden was surprised to see his mother in his office very early that morning.
She shoved in his face a stack of papers and when he perused them, he saw pictures of women - lots of them.
“Mom, what are these?” he asked while in his mind, an idea had already taken hold.
“Good morning, son. As you must know, we will get from that list your future Mrs. Ellish.” Alicia announced, unperturbed at her son’s stupefied expression.
“But mom! I love Tori. I do not want to get married to some girl just because I have to save our family’s face!”
The outrage in Cayden’s voice reverberated in the four walls of his room. Then he threw the stack of papers as if scalded by them.
“What are you even thinking?”
“Son, listen to me. Your father said that he would disown you if you cancel your wedding. I could not let him do that. This company is your heritage, your rightful place as your father’s firstborn son. Besides, this would not be permanent. You can divorce within a year.”
“Why do you care so much? If I am out of the way, your sons will benefit if that happens.” He shot back angrily, miffed at the idea that they wanted him to forget all about Tori in a snap.
A slap landed on his right cheek.
“You are my son. I may not have carried you in my womb, but I cared for you as a mother would.” Alicia snapped back.
The hurt in her eyes was Cayden’s undoing.
“I am sorry, mom.”
Alicia sighed. “It’s alright. I know what you are going through. Just leaf through the pages I gave you. Those ladies are willing to become your wife for a fee.” She added.
“What about the press?” Cayden interjected while his eyes and hands were busy scanning the pages he was holding.
“They were all paid to be silent.” His mother intoned before leaving him alone in his office.
When his mom left, Cayden let the documents sit on his table and called his best friend James, rushing him to come to his office immediately.
While he was the CEO of Ellish Film Productions, James is the COO.
Ater ten minutes, Cayden heard a knock on his office door before it was flung wide open and his friend came to his full view.
“What’s the rush?” James asked while he sauntered to his desk.
Cayden sat up straight and reached for the stack of papers on the corner of his desk to hand it to James. After a moment, a frown appeared on James’s face as he flipped through the pages that contained vital information about the most beautiful women on the planet.
“What are these?” James could not help but ask when he came to the last page.
“That my friend is where we are going to look for my substitute bride,” Cayden said matter-of-factly.
At exactly the same time five days ago, Wyoming Wilson was busy preparing poached eggs on toast for breakfast when she received a call from her manager informing her that she had been called to audition. At the time, projects became scarce. If she does not find another job soon, she does not know where she is going to get enough money to pay their rent and buy basic necessities. Their resources were depleted by her father’s accident. And what’s more, they left an outstanding debt at the hospital which she agreed to pay in six monthly installments. Two months had passed but she had not been able to produce the money to make a dent on their hospital debt. The promise of a new project suddenly gave her hope. With a smile on her face, she ended the call and continued preparing breakfast for her dad. She put the food she prepared on a tray and went out of their small kitchen. She walked barefooted, humming softly to herself while treading the recently waxed wooden floor before
After making sure that she inflicted serious damage on Jeremy, Wyoming left in a huff with nary a second look back to her boyfriend of almost one year. There is so much anger inside of her. There is so much anger inside of her. And pain. Wyoming brushed harshly the tears that fell from her eyes. Jeremy does not deserve her tears. She trusted him. Loved him. She had always thought that what they had was perfect. Jeremy, like her, is an actor. But unlike her, he was able to get major roles while she only managed to land bit parts. He was actually a big star. But nobody in the industry knew about them. Nobody had any idea that they were in a relationship. They had always acted appropriately in front of everyone. And no one suspected them of carrying on a relationship that almost ran up to a year. Why not? They have the same manager and it is not unlikely that she and Jeremy would be tossed into each other’s company from time to time because of their management’s act
Even in her excitement, Wyoming felt that she had to put in her best performance to match the exorbitant rate they were paying her. She pep-talked herself into doing a great job to impress the Ellishes. She does not want them to think that they made a mistake in choosing her for this role. She was hyped. She had to slay this role and hoped to carve a name for herself in this industry. She has to prove to everyone that she can make it big this time with the right people backing her up - meaning Ellish Film Productions Limited. She started walking down the aisle and felt it odd that the production team chose another nameless, unpopular actor to play her groom. She also noticed a red flag in all these - the presence of Ellish Film Productions stalwarts Marcus and Alicia Ellish.“We are gathered here today to witness the joining of Cayden Ellish and Wyoming Wilson in holy matrimony.”That made her stop. The wedding celebrant used her real name. She also remembered her groom’s name as
Her body stiffened when she realized what she had gotten into. She slumped back on the plush seat looking like her whole world crumbled before her. Cayden saw her expression and took pity on her. “Don’t worry. The marriage is for show only and after a year, you are free to go.” He said to assuage her worry. But the anxious look on her face remained. “I don’t understand, why me?” Wyoming could not help it. She asked the question that was foremost on her mind. “Why not you?” Cayden countered. “I mean, I am nobody. I do not have an impressive record. I was not born with a silver spoon in my mouth.” Wyoming said what was on her mind without any bitterness since it was the truth. But Cayden seemed to find it offensive seeing the rigidity in the set of his jaw. She realized that he was a man not used to being questioned for his actions. But instead of cowering from the pointed look he gave her, she grabbed the opportunity of their temporary situation to explain hersel
Wyoming did not know how long it took for Cayden’s driver to get them to the hospital. Her eyes were closed as she struggled with her breathing. But she could hear voices - the loudest of them all came from her new husband, Cayden Ellish. He was barking orders at whoever while she was being wheeled inside. The medics soon put her on oxygen. She hurriedly breathed through the cannula. Then they injected something into her arm with Cayden's worried face looming before her. That scene was the last thing she remembered before she passed out. When she becomes conscious again, she finds herself lying in bed inside an ivory room, which feels very calming to the eyes. She bolted upright in confusion. The last thing she remembered was Cayden brought her to the hospital, and they were trying to administer relief for her sudden asthma attack. “I am glad you are okay. You gave me quite a scare back there.” Someone spoke. A man’s voice. Wyoming abruptly spun her head to her left and sa
Wyoming’s face turned pale at the thought of losing her virginity. Cayden watched in amusement as the color drained from her face. She looked adorable when she looked helpless and problematic while fiddling with her thumb and forefinger. He was thinking of playing with her a little bit -letting her stew for a while, but when her face lost its color, he had second thoughts. The sight of her pale face alarmed him a bit. It brought him memories of the scare he experienced inside the car when he realized she was experiencing difficulty breathing. The panic he felt at that time was no joke. Much as it appealed to him to tease her, he restrained himself. He stopped. He does not want an encore of their hospital episode. In his mind, he decided to let her off the hook. “I am afraid having s*x with you is not on my card. You can admire and lust after my body as most girls do, but you can not have it. You may be my wife, but technically, you are still my employee.” Cayden scoffed.
“We will live together as husband and wife under the same roof for a year. When the year ends, we are going to file for a divorce. After our separation, you can do whatever you like, and I can do mine. We are free from any accountability from each other.”“While we were married, we had to keep appearances at all costs, especially in front of my grandfather. Pretend that you are crazy about me. Understand?”Wyoming nodded, trying to keep a straight face while listening to Cayden read the supplemental contract his lawyer drew for them. They were inside the study room in Cayden’s mansion. This is the first place he brought her to after they came from the hospital. This is also going to be her temporary home for a year. “We have separate quarters. My private quarters are off-limits to you.” He warned.Wyoming rolled her eyes when he was not looking. Why does he keep on insisting that she has any designs over him? Wyoming threw him an exasperated look and started doodling with h
Inside the car, Wyoming unconsciously rubbed the palms of her hands on her dress.Cayden did not respond to her message. She looked outside the window and saw they were getting near their destination, and she began to panic. Alicia Ellish, noting her nervousness and misinterpreting it, tried to appease her. All the while, she held Wyoming’s hands between hers and patted them gently.“Do not worry, dear. Noah, Cayden's grandfather is a good man.” She assured Wyoming countless times, not understanding the reason for her panicked state.Alicia was also surprised when Noah’s private nurse called to relay the old man's request - get Cayden’s wife to visit him soon. The request delighted her. She felt in her gut that Noah Ellish liked Wyoming for her son, and in her excitement, she did not waste any more time. She went hurriedly to Cayden's mansion to fetch his wife. Alicia would also like to take advantage of the time to bond with her. She never had a chance to be a mother to a d
Cayden backed off, afraid to anger Wyoming in her delicate condition. After Wyoming climbed into the car, Alicia turned around to talk to him. “It’s best if we take her, Cayden.” He nodded. He did not want to argue with the elders or raise Wyoming’s hackles in her sensitive condition. He was right, it seemed, when Alicia added, “Her hormones are acting up making her blood boil every time she sees you. If she’s indeed pregnant I am sure the baby would take after you.” Alicia teased leaving him in a daze. “Mom!” Wyoming called out from inside the van, prompting Alicia to bestow an apologetic smile his way before closing the car door behind her. “Pregnant.” He murmured to himself while he tried to wrap his mind around the possibility. It wouldn’t be impossible since he and Wyoming spend most of their night doing the deed. Cayden watched in a daze as the van moved forward before blending into the morning traffic. It was a long time before he decided to get back to the house a
Wyoming woke up feeling at ease. She had no idea what woke him up, it was just that her nose had become sensitive. She smelled something that she found not to her liking. She sniffed the air, her nostrils scrunched up in distaste. “What is that awful smell?” She asked hoarsely, opening one eye to check if there was something wrong with their room only to see a semi-undress Cayden hovering above her. His hair dripped wet from the shower. She smiled warmly at him. In a daze, she propped herself on the bed, her hands stretching out to put them around Cayden’s neck. With eyes sparkling in delight at her warm reception, Cayden leaned forward to peck her lips. She meets his downward motion with an upward motion, sniffing at the same time. That was when her nostrils started to twitch scrunching up in distaste for she smelled something not suitable to her taste. “You smell disgusting!” She cried, covering her mouth with her palm to avoid smelling that awful smell. However, the stench s
Giggling sounds and laughter filled Wyoming’s ears. Surrounded by her family, her heart felt full. She blushed when she remembered Cayden and her were supposedly hiding from their families. Now, looking back toward the living room, she saw everyone looking at them, smiles wreathing their faces.Overwhelmed with shyness, she buried her face in Cayden’s chest, as if he could hide what they were doing previously from their onlookers. Cayden threw his head back at her natural display of shyness. His laughter started as a low rumble in the pit of his stomach crossing his lungs and finally coming out of his mouth. The sight of him looking so carefree and happy caught her in a daze, affecting her in ways she did not understand but could only feel.“Mommy! Daddy!” Connor’s shout distracted her from her intent perusal of Cayden’s face. She turned her head to the direction of the sound and saw Connor running toward them, his little feet creating a soft thud as his shoe collided with th
Wyoming got out of the bathroom, a large towel draped around her body, and another one wrapped like a turban around her head. She was about to pull the towel from her head to rub her hair with it when she stopped suddenly. She debated within herself whether to go back to the bathroom and wait for him to leave the room or feign nonchalance.Choosing the latter, she walked inside the room she shares with Connor and stopped a few paces before Cayden. Then she remembered if he was here. “Who is taking care of Connor?” The idea that Connor is playing by himself somewhere inside the house or maybe outside on the beach had her hurrying. She moved about the room, opening a closet to get a change of clothes. In her haste, the towel knot loosened, threatening to fall off her body. She clutched the front with her hand while her other hand held her change of clothes. The towel on her head fell off. Cayden saved it. He held the towel and gently pulled it off her head. “Thank you.” She mu
“Argh!” Wyoming’s fingers clenched, her teeth gritting in frustration while Connor and Cayden, the duo from h*ll did another trick that left her breathless, her body humming in unreleased tension. “Mommy, put some sunblock on my back and daddy’s,” Connor demanded, handing her a bottle of sunblock lotion and turning around, so his back was facing her.She opened the cap, applied some to her palms, and lathered her son’s small back with the lotion.“There, all done. You can now go swim in the water with your dad.” She told him while she placed the bottle of sunblock aside, careful that her eyes led her astray. She had been trying so hard to ignore the rippling muscles on Cayden’s exposed back which he also displayed alongside her son’s. Cayden previously followed Connor’s lead and presented her back to her as well. She smoothed sunblock on Connor but not on Cayden. However, her eyes betrayed her every time. She could not help but look at Cayden’s back, filled with ridges and cur
Contrary to what she initially thought, Cayden did not bring them back to New York, back to their old house surrounded by their family. When their plane landed and she got out, she was surprised to find out they were nowhere near JFK International Airport. In truth, she missed her father and would have wanted to bond with her mother. She braved the longing to be with her parents to protect herself and her son from Cayden. She had mistakenly thought that putting distance between them was enough for her and her son to get away from Cayden’s peripheral. Only to be corrected when he came barging in on her despite the distance. “Where is this place?” She asked, looking at the expanse of trees and dirt around them, totally opposite of the City that never sleeps. She was still miffed with him for trying to blackmail her into submission, but she could not totally ignore him. The man is huge and his presence was not one to be ignored. All through their flight, she was fully aware of t
Chest heaving from anger at the audacity of this man to lie to her through his teeth, Wyoming all but cried, “Liar!” The bitterness of five years ago came to her in full force, flaming the rage inside her. Gaining her memory has intensified the pain like it just happened a while back. She clenched her fist, struggling from her confinement. It was futile, though. With Cayden’s buffed body, he had her trapped very neatly. She did not know how he was able to become this muscled man and still evoke the same feelings from her. His body and her body might change. He became bigger and muscular, and she became softer and fuller due to childbirth, but when their skin connected, it was as if fire sizzled between them.Wyoming could feel the hardness of the wall digging into her back, yet she did not even flinch. The anger gnawing inside her was more powerful than the physical pain. “You can not win me over with all your lies. My son belongs to me. He is mine and you can not take h
“Where are we going, Collins?” “It’s a secret.” Wyoming fidgeted in her seat but did not press Collins for more information. She was surprised when he asked her tonight. They do not usually go out because their finances are tight. And the few times they did, it was always with Connor. “Relax. We’re not going far,” he told her, seeing her getting all worked up. “I’m just not used to leaving Connor at night with a sitter. You know how he wanted me to lull him to sleep. I’m worried that he’ll raise h*ll when we don’t come back at his bedtime hour. “Don’t worry about Connor. He knows Lizzie and he won’t make a fuss.” He assured her. Lizzie lives next door - a single mother of a four-year-old daughter, Samantha. “To ease your mind, why don’t you call them?” Collins suggested.Thinking it was a great idea, she took her phone from her purse and called Lizzie. “Wyoming? Did you forget something?” Lizzie’s soft voice permeated her ears causing her to feel a little self-con
“I am fine, mom.” Wyoming insisted and rolled her eyes for the second time during that phone call. Her mother has been deluging her with phone calls these days and it has become quite annoying. “Will call you back, mom. I have to fetch Connor from the kindergarten. The school notified me they will be released early today.” Wyoming paused, listening to what her mom said on the other line before responding to cut the overseas call. “Yes, mom, of course. Will call you some other time, bye.” She expelled air after she hung up. “Your mom’s pretty difficult today,” Collins commented after she dropped her phone. Wyoming did not like how it sounded coming off from him. He did not even know her. The only interaction they had was when she was at the hospital back in New York and there has been nothing significant about their conversations, mostly getting to know each other, etc. In an offhand manner, she shrugged her shoulders to make light of it. Her mom, she knew, could be a bit
