DASHIELLI checked her office for the tenth time, worried. It had been 2 hours since she left for her lunch break, more than the time allocated by the company for workers. not like I was worried about that. Leaning on the wall, I closed my eyes, clutching the flower vase to my chest as I wondered if she had gone to pick her kids up. If that was it, would she bring them to the office? That would be superb! Spending time with that lovely kid River was the best thing I ever experienced. I didn't know I loved kids until I met him. “What are you doing here?”Startled by the question, I almost threw the bouquet on the floor but caught myself at the right moment. Forcing a nervous smile on my lips, I turned towards her, reaching out to smoothen my hair. “Hi, didn't see you there.” I was as cool as ever. Well, as casual as I could be leaning on the wall next to her door, with the flowers and an awkward smile on my face. “Yeah, right.” She rolled her eyes, pursing her lips as she stared
“Hello.” I placed the phone on my right ear, and tapped impatiently on my table, waiting for her to talk, so we would get it out of the way. “I saw her today,” she said, going straight to the point, not like I was expecting much from her. My mum only worries about me whenever I am sick or when she needs something. Those were the only times she played the mother card.“Who?” I stopped tapping and sat up. “Lilith?” I sighed, puffing out an exasperated breath as I pinched the bridge of my nose. “Listen, mum. I will not do whatever you want. I won't take Lilith back. I have already decided on it, and there's no going back on my words. We are incompatible. I don't love her." “Not her.” Her tone was calm. So calm, it made me wonder who it was that made her sound like it. “Then who?” “Nova.” I froze at the name. Gulping, I sat up, my gaze going over to my shut door. “Nova? Where did you meet her?” I tried to keep my tone calm, to avoid lashing out at her. I needed to know what happened
NOVADashiell was surprisingly silent as he watched the slide show. I predicted he would argue with me over the colour, as he did at first. I was prepared for it and had my responses to give, but he didn't do as I expected him to. It was a surprising turn of events, one that left me gaping at him as I wondered if he was a changed man or had something else up his sleeves. That must be it. He must be planning something.I thought little about him meeting my son because it seemed he was still in the dark about them. He wouldn't have remained calm if he knew they were his. He would have confronted me about it or fought legally. He wouldn't have let me off the hook that easily. I glanced around at the people seated, at Benita, who was added to replace the manager who took a leave yesterday because his wife was in the hospital. She sent a small smile my way, which I reciprocated with a wink before focusing on the show.Dashiell cleared his throat after the slides the design team presented
“Why do I feel the boss is treating you differently?” Benita asked, trailing after me. She refused to return to her office after the meeting, so she could gossip a little. Not only that, but I promised to take her home with me so she could see my babies, hence another reason for sticking to my side like a stubborn glue. “What are you trying to say?” I stopped in my tracks and turned to face her, frowning as I folded my arms. “Why do you think he's treating me differently? Because he agreed to use my ideas? That's nothing, Nita. You should have seen how he opposed the idea when I first proposed it. He's only supporting me because he has discovered how right I was.” I kept my tone neutral, hiding the slight tremor in it. The last thing I wanted was for others to know about my relationship with Brion.“Nita? I love the nickname!” She clapped in glee, grinning. “I love it better than Benny.” “Oh, I'm glad you do.” I turned to continue my stride to my office, praying she wouldn't return
All the blood drained from my face at her remark. My heart hammered against my chest as my stomach tightened to the point of pain. Gaping at her, I opened my mouth to talk, but no words escaped from it. I could only watch her without uttering a sound. The rustling sounds from the leaves outside as the wind blew on them were louder than ever, almost as if I was standing by the tree. “Mr Dashiell? You think the same, don't you???” River sounded eager. “I felt the same when I met him. He looks like he could pass as Willow's dad. I told her, but she didn't agree!”“Shut up! He's not my daddy. He's a bad man. A dangerous man like Mum said he is. If there's anyone who should be my dad, it's Uncle Brion!” Willow argued, placing her hands on her waist as she glared at her brother. “Miss Benita thinks the same, Willow. You are only saying this because you haven't met him. I'm telling you, he looks like you!” River insisted, looking like he wanted to drag her ears until she agreed with him.
DASHIELLI couldn't keep the smiles off my face. Reasoning back to how well I communicated with Nova during the meeting made me proud of myself. Standing up for the idea when others thought it wasn't the best made me feel so happy. I wanted to scream it out to the world, but I couldn't. No one, aside from me would know how much this meant to me.Sighing, I tapped my index finger on my desk, reflecting on the smile on her face. It was the first time she had genuinely smiled at me since she returned. The smile wasn't as forced as the ones I was used to. She was genuinely happy, making me feel accomplished for causing such an expression on her face. I have never been this happy before, not even when my father signed off the company to me after I completed my studies. Having her smile was an accomplishment. It showed I was getting close to my plans, to get her to change her attitude towards me. It doesn't seem like it would be a simple thing to pull off, but I'm determined to do whatever
I frowned at her response, not buying it at all. She didn't seem like she was crying over something not relevant, but I didn't pursue the matter. She would have told me about it if she wanted me to know. We weren't friends after all. I couldn't force her to do that. Shs owed me no explanation. “It's okay.” I patted her on the back. “Just let it out. Whatever's eating within you. Trust me, you will feel great when you do.”She looked up at my remarks, her eyes widening as she stared at me, stunned. She wasn't the only one, though. I had never been a good comforter. Lilith always made fun of me because of that. But at the moment, I felt like an enlightened monk. Seeing her look so sad made me want to comfort her. “Come on. You can weep how much you want. I won't judge.” And she did, bawling out her eyes until a few of the pedestrians walking down the overpass cast glances at us, thinking I caused her problem. We were lucky none of them stopped to ask why, or even called the cops o
NOVAA bouquet was waiting on my desk for me when I arrived. When I saw it, I assumed Dashiell was the one who placed it since he was the only one who could do something like this, but I discovered he wasn't the one after reading the card the flower came with. Benita sent it. I took the flower off my table and walked over to my dustbin to dispose of it, but couldn't bring myself to get rid of them. Groaning in frustration, I returned to my desk with it and placed it back the way I saw it before I sat on my chair, so I could stare at the flower. If she thought sending a bouquet with a card would make me forgive her easily, then she had more than enough surprises coming her way. Things like this don't cut it for me. I was still lost in thoughts when I got a knock on my door, and Benita stepped in, with her gaze on the floor. She closed the distance between us and walked over to my side, still with her gaze averted. Frowning, I watched her, waiting for her to say something. “I'm
